Title: Random Chat
Post by: alyssa on December 10, 2015, 06:06:56 am
in the category of 'whaaaat we don't have that thread already?'

I'll kick it off with a brief story abt a christmas party i attended.  It's a party thrown by the local climbing/mountaineering store.  They do a Yankee swap thing- everyone brings a item, then in a random order folks pick a wrapped item or they can 'steal' an item already opened.
Due to an oversite on my part i had an extra Marvel collectors corp villains box.  I wrapped that, wondering if i'd uncover any closet geeks..... & i did!  I may invite him over to play board games with me & lew <grin>

any good christmas party stories?

Ok another topic, yes I am determined lol

I am wicked Bored at work and all I can think of is my next vacation which kicks me into hyper planer mode. How far overboard have you gone in the planing of a con/vacation?
Have folks ever looked at you like you're crazy for the advanced planing?

All the time when I plan for the two July conventions I attend.  People don't really know how intense it is to go a large convention.  Ha ha.

"Seriously, you start working on stuff this early?!"   (I get this all the time when I explain Comic-Con and Anime Expo.)

I'm rethinking me sdcc plane tix, rethinking my car rental in LA for WC, haven't booked a place for the time between c2e2 and  WC.
And I still have to book my dad and sons trip to Europe.

Everything is waiting on something....and it's driving me crazy.  I need a movie to watch or my WD compendium to distract me

Company had a bad quarter so they are keeping this year's holiday party low key. Last year we had the party at the new 49ers stadium, which was very cool. Good food and generous bartenders in a swanky part of the stadium that I will never see normally. At one point I met a guy in sales who was involved with the rollout of a product I worked on, and who looked remarkably like Dennis Hopper. He was upset with some of the management and got more and more heated as we talked, but the more upset he got the more he looked and sounded like Dennis Hopper. So I just kept ordering us drinks and egging him on, getting happier and happier because it's just like I'm getting yelled at by Dennis Hopper! So awesome. Then his wife came and took him away.

For overplanning, I tend to get obsessive with any trip I go on, especially road trips. I'll look up every place we go through, read up on restaurants, historical sites, stuff like that. I wasn't always this way, but a while back my wife and I had a getaway to SF. I had just started reading The Maltese Falcon and realized that the opening scene takes place in a tunnel that was right next to the hotel we were staying at. Now I can't get enough of that kind of thing.

It has been so busy at work lately that I haven't been able to uber-plan. We drove to Oklahoma for Thanksgiving (Oh I-35, how I despise you!), and I felt so off because I didn't even do a packing list (DH was shocked). At least where visiting family is involved-it's usually more about their schedule, so I did okay. DH did more planning than I did (he does the turkey day cooking).
As far as SDCC, I haven't bought my plane tix yet, because it seemed expensive. I am going to stalk the prices and buy after Christmas. It's driving me crazy though.
For Dragon Con in September, I will also try to wait on plane tickets (hotels are, as always, locked down super early!) Last year, we almost went last minute because the Hilton opened up, and I tried for plane tickets and got a really really cheap rate to Atlanta. Since we splurged a little on the hotel, we want to save some money on the flight.

ETA-I think planning for the next con is one way to fight off post Con depression. That may have something to do with my need to plan early! :)

I exchanged Christmas gifts with some friends last night. We went to an English style pub - I had the bangers and mash. I got gift cards - Tim Hortons, Best Buy, Boston Pizza.  I gave books. (I have started only giving books as presents. For my nieces and nephews I will either give a graphic novel or a book and put a note in it that they can read it when they are teenagers/young adults. Sometimes I'll include something with the book - tee shirt, hat, gift card, etc.)

I already used the Best Buy gift card last night on the Taken King for Xbox One. It was $49.99 plus taxes - so around $57. When I got home though, one of my PSN friends told me that since I have Destiny for PS4 I can download all the expansions from the Playstation store for $39.99 no taxes. So I am going to return it today. 17 bucks is 17 bucks.

I think I am going to have dim sum for lunch today :)

Nice stuff, especially that Founders, and it even has the controversial baby label! I know we have differing opinions on the importance of breakfast, maybe this will sway you?

that was going to be the first one to open .... at lunch tho ;)  I went for the oatmeal stout instead.  i have to admit the days when i dont' have to be 'on', a bit of beer at lunch is a nice thing
have you tried the others?
there was a couple of folks talking abt a grapefruit ipa --- it sounded interesting

i am officially done with the "have to do's" till saturday

Post by: mark on December 24, 2015, 12:40:05 pm
I haven't tried the Breckenridge Vanilla Porter or the Shake one, but have had the others. Is the grapefruit one the Ballast Point Grapefruit Sculpin? If so it's quite good, I don't normally like the fruity brews but I like it as much as their regular Sculpin.
Title: Re: Random Chat
Post by: alyssa on December 24, 2015, 04:18:20 pm
yes, that was it, the Ballast point sculpin.......  i'm not an ale fan so have steered clear of brews i could see through but that sounds interesting enough to try assuming i can find someone to finish the 6 pack off if i can't get past the ale part. ;)

I got a growler of a local stout from Hobbs in Ossipee NH- very heavy & strong- there's a reason i like porters.... http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/35857/185831/

BBT is much better in the early seasons. The later seasons have been coasting. Start BBT with season 1.

As for GoT, I'm glad you got ahold of it after all of the issues with your son keeping it from you! Just wait, you'll catch up in no time!

They are best when marathoned because that makes it easier to remember all the characters.

Not sure on the charts-- I haven't read them.

I was lukewarm on the show until I marathoned them, then I loved it.  I wasn't able to remember everyone.

Maps are good--LOTR taught me that.  That helped me paying attention to the credits.

There are family trees in some of the books. I know there are in the World of Ice and Fire book.

This chart is pretty nice, but it might contain some spoilers for you.

i finally got around to trying this- little strong for me as i'm a real light weight but it's tasty.  the Hobbs stout is stronger & more intense-

a couple of Founders may end up being supper as Lew is Cooking.  He's got to do a few recipes for his Culinary class and seems to be running rather late.  As in supper will be 2 hr's late <sigh>

Love that chart!  ;)

Other helpful tips for becoming a GOT expert:

If you are just starting out and are watching the show on a blu-ray or DVD, use the special feature functions that come along with each episode. They have ones that will show you a list and a brief bio for all the characters in each scene, as well as other features that go into the history of Westeros (helpful for understanding what the characters are referring to at times AND narrated by the cast!). I highly recommend them  :D

Also, since you are not worried about spoilers, there is this website: http://awoiaf.westeros.org (http://awoiaf.westeros.org). It is run by the people who co-authored A WORLD OF ICE AND FIRE, and who also help GRRM with his book continuity. You can find character descriptions, charts, etc. Though this site mainly draws from the book material, it is really helpful for the show, too!

There is also a show-specific wiki: http://gameofthrones.wikia.com/wiki/Game_of_Thrones_Wiki (http://gameofthrones.wikia.com/wiki/Game_of_Thrones_Wiki). It is not as robust as AWOIAF, but it is definitely just as helpful!

to be honest it's one of the things i most admire abt my folks who are in their 80's-  they're always willing to try new stuff & as a result don't seem old of mind.

Happy Twilight Zone Day  8)

From -> http://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/fun/twilight-zone-day

May 11 is Twilight Zone Day, an unofficial holiday that honors and celebrates the Twilight Zone, an iconic and thrilling television show.

Twilight Zone was created by Rod Serling, who was also the show's host and narrator. The show is a collection of unrelated stories where nothing is as it seems and the end is usually always bizarre and unexpected. The stories on the show combined the features of science fiction, psychological thrillers, drama, horror and fantasy and were based in the twilight zone. The twilight zone according to the narrator at the beginning of each episode of the show is a "...fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge..." The show made its debut in the United States in October 1959, to immediate critical acclaim, though it took a few years for it to gain popular success. Today, the Twilight Zone is considered to be one of the best and one of the most watched TV shows of all times. No one knows who created this holiday or why they chose May 11 to honor this creepy, but fun holiday.

http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/business/la-fi-disney-passes-20160922-snap-story.html

I think they make a good point that the re-introduction of the pass is likely due to the closure of a good chunk of the park for Star Wars Land. I suspect that once that area is complete, the Southern CA annual passes will once again be pulled.

Much? I don't know. More than sporadic certainly, maybe occasionally? Dangit there I go again.

We listened to The Cardturner on CD, was great like all of Sachar's books. We especially liked the foghorn sounds they used to bracket the technical descriptions of bridge so that people who wanted to could tune out. Now that I think about it, I can't remember any other books about bridge.

Picked up 2 books from a discount pile yesterday that looked like they would be scary reads. "The Secret Life of Puppets", with a really creepy cover and a "Complete History of the San Francisco Horror", published around the last time the Cubs won the World Series. When I got home and actually looked at them, found that the first was literary criticism and the other was about the 1906 earthquake  :-[

From http://www.aceparking.com/2016/12/ace-parking-partners-with-inrix-global-leader-in-connected-car-services/

Ace Parking’s real-time data including parking location name, number of spaces, address, rates and in some cases parking availability, is automatically uploaded to INRIX who will feed that through to customers who have connected cars or mobile apps powered by INRIX technology.

INRIX works with cities, automakers, and the parking industry to create end-to-end parking solutions for drivers. As the leading provider of connected car services and transportation analytics, their technology provides drivers with valuable information including directions, parking, traffic and weather through the car’s navigation systems. INRIX provides parking information to leading automakers like Audi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Lexus, as well as municipalities including Dallas and Los Angeles.

Are you excited about the musical cross over between Flash and Supergirl?
Did you see that the villain would be The Music Meister? So cool! If they could cast NPH, that would be heaven, but either way, I am really looking forward to it. If you have not seen the Music Meister episode of Batman: the Brave and the Bold-look it up (Mayhem of the Music Meister). It's one of my favorite 1/2 hours of television ever.

That's awesome! But is a Ghostbusters trap that had lights and stuff technically "working" ??? A philosophical question I suppose.

We've had a lot of rain recently, so now we have all of these little streams in our neighborhood as the water drains from the hills down to the ocean. I mention this since our recently adopted dog absolutely refuses to cross them, a known vampire trait. Then we were cooking last night and a piece of garlic dropped on the floor. As he tends to do with anything that falls on the kitchen floor, Waldo rushes to eat it, but then spits it out with this huge growl. So there's that.

Superbowl is Sunday! Which means prop bets! (I don't make actual bets but we have people over, make a sheet of "bets" for them to fill out before the game, winner gets a silly prize.)

My perennial favorite is over/under on the length of the national anthem. Set at 2:15 this year. My next favorite this year is whether or not someone says "Houston we have a problem" at some point during the broadcast.

I am not an expert, but I think that the rain is too much at once.  I believe we need more sustained slower rains, but I could be wrong.

There's a lot of information here http://www.californiadrought.org/drought/current-conditions/ (http://www.californiadrought.org/drought/current-conditions/)

This is their update from 2/13

Another series of storms has brought heavy rain and strong winds to much of California, causing widespread flooding, especially in Northern California, and threatening the structural integrity of the Oroville Dam, the nation’s tallest. Counties and cities near Lake Oroville have issued emergency evacuation orders for 188,000 residents due to eroded primary and emergency spillways which could lead to the uncontrolled releases of water.

Drought conditions have continued to improve, with about 11% of the state experiencing severe to extreme drought, compared to 20% last week. The area no longer experiencing short-term drought effects has increased from 40% to 41.5% over the past week. La Niña conditions have subsided and normal sea surface temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere are expected to continue through spring 2017. Despite these improvements, drought impacts on overdrafted groundwater basins, forests, and aquatic species in California are long term and will take multiple above-average precipitation years to be resolved.

Snowpack is good. Reservoirs are catching up but a lot of them are still well under their average levels.

Reservoirs are mixed, but improving. This has some numbers and you can click on individual reservoirs

http://cdec.water.ca.gov/cgi-progs/reservoirs/RES (http://cdec.water.ca.gov/cgi-progs/reservoirs/RES)

this gives a graph for a few reservoirs but you can change the date. If you compare now to 2 months ago for example you'll see a big change for most, but there are a few that are still pretty far behind.

http://cdec.water.ca.gov/cdecapp/resapp/getResGraphsMain.action (http://cdec.water.ca.gov/cdecapp/resapp/getResGraphsMain.action)

Not certain how many people and what percent of agriculture depends on wells. Also curious in what the thinking is for desired reservoir levels since climate change leads to more extremes, lots of things are reported in relation to averages which might be misleading.

What I've heard is that the one day downpours help, but a lot it runs off into the ocean.  I believe that all/most drains in SD lead quickly to the ocean.  Surfers get illnesses from the ocean after the rain.

When I first moved here, it rained a lot more days in the winter.  Right now, we get getting a couple of downpour days a year.

Foiled again, sigh:

http://sandiego.eater.com/2017/2/27/14675516/roscoes-house-of-chicken-waffles-puts-san-diego-expansion-on-hold

Quote
Our collective dream of fried chicken and waffles has been temporarily shattered as we have received breaking news that Roscoe’s House of Chicken & Waffles is not moving forward with its San Diego expansion at this time. Last summer, Eater shared word that Roscoe’s had purchased a location in Barrio Logan at 1678 National Avenue. The unique site, at the corner of National and Sigsbee, spans a 17,489-square-foot lot that had plenty of room for the soul food brand’s needs, which included ample parking and a 4,000-square-foot restaurant space.

Though Roscoe’s House of Chicken & Waffles had already begun construction in Barrio Logan, a source says the company recently came to the decision to put the property back on the market in order to focus on its activities in Los Angeles, which include moving their Mid-City outpost to a brand new building which is scheduled to launch later this year. Our source assures us that Roscoe’s ownership is still committed to opening a restaurant in San Diego and will likely restart their location search in the next six months.

Also, nice upgrade to the front page graphics -- separate social media layouts:

Get better soon, Stan!

http://www.newsarama.com/33524-stan-lee-health-concerns-force-cancellation-of-con-appearance.html

Quote
Stan Lee has dropped out of this weekend's Big Apple Comic Con citing "health issues," according to the New York City convention.

"Stan keeps to an amazing schedule and it seems to have taken its toll. We are terribly sorry for any inconvenience but the show must go on."

Autographed memorabilia relating to Lee will still be sold at a Stan Lee Collectibles booth during the convention. The is convention is not offering refunds on admission tickets, but will offer refunds/exchanges for any advance Stan Lee autographs, photo ops, or swag bag pre-orders made.

In 2016, similiar health issues led Lee to cancel what was billed as his "final" apparance at Comic-Con International: San Diego. He had since resumed appearances, billing some of them as his "final" time at those conventions, including 2016's New York Comic Con.

During the MONOPOLY Token Madness vote, January 10 - 31, fans across more than 100 countries selected the eight tokens they hoped to see in the next generation of the game from a list of 64 contenders. This monumental MONOPOLY campaign drew more than 4.3 million votes, empowering fans to make their mark on this iconic game. The new, fan-picked lineup of MONOPOLY Tokens includes:

- Scottie Dog Token: The best friend of Mr. MONOPOLY since the 1950s, the Scottie Dog token proved its popularity by receiving the most votes - making it the overall first place winner.
- T-Rex Token: The mighty T-Rex token stomped its way into the new game, garnering the second most overall votes and making history as the first dinosaur token of Mr. MONOPOLY.
- Top Hat Token: Coming in third place in overall votes, the Top Hat token - a staple in the game since 1935 - will keep Mr. MONOPOLY looking dapper well into the future.
- Car Token: This 1930s roadster will continue fueling adrenaline rushes for Mr. MONOPOLY in the next generation of the game; coming in fourth place in overall votes.
- Rubber Ducky Token: Coming in fifth in overall votes, the new Rubber Ducky token is truly all its "quacked" up to be.
- Cat Token: Fans voted the Cat token into the game in 2013, and she clawed her way back in as one of the eight winning tokens, coming in sixth place in overall votes.
- Penguin Token: Waddling into the game in seventh place in overall votes, the Penguin token is the new style muse for Mr. MONOPOLY.
- Battleship Token: The beloved Battleship token represents the first round-the-world trip for Mr. MONOPOLY; securing the eighth spot in overall votes, this token's legacy will cruise into the next generation of the game.

"The MONOPOLY Token Madness Vote was our biggest fan-powered program to date and the global MONOPOLY community has spoken!" said Jonathan Berkowitz, senior vice president of marketing for Hasbro Gaming. "The next generation of tokens clearly represents the interests of our fans around the world and we're proud to have our iconic game impacted by the people that feel most passionate about playing it."

Some of the success of the tokens making their way into, or keeping their spot in the MONOPOLY game can be attributed to many brands and organizations campaigning for select tokens. Car sharing service, Zipcar campaigned to keep the Car Token in the game by tweeting playful and often hilarious memes to their fans asking them to #SaveTheCar. The New England Aquarium rallied fans of their adorable Penguin population to #VotePenguin, and hosted MR. MONOPOLY to meet the penguins on the day the vote kicked off, which was broadcasted via Facebook live to the MONOPOLY brand's nearly 11 million Facebook fans.

While the Scottie dog, top hat, car, cat, and battleship tokens can breathe a sigh of relief, the iconic thimble, boot, and wheelbarrow tokens didn't make the cut. Instead, they're planning to take some time off and will not be part of the next generation of the MONOPOLY game.

- "Sew" long, Thimble: The lucky Thimble token is down on its luck. With just over 81,000 votes, this token will be left out of the next generation of the game after more than 80 years.
- The Boot gets booted: Mr. MONOPOLY needs a new pair of kicks, because the once popular boot token - modeled after the working shoe of the 1930s - received just over 83,000 votes, and was ultimately booted from the game.
- Bye, bye Wheelbarrow: The wheelbarrow token, a staple in the game since the 1950s, will wheel no more. With just over 60,000 votes, this historic token was voted out of the next generation of the game.

Can you imagine if they made a Monopoly: San Diego Comic-Con edition?  'Go' turns into 'Hall H', all the tokens turn into items from pop culture, throw in a cosplayer or two, 'Free Parking' into, well, parking...

Hmmm...I kinda like this thought....

In the UK they did individual cities Monopoly and each square was something to do with that city.
I have my Nottingham Monopoly unopened.

They used to do that in the states for fundraisers. I feel sorry for families that get the GoTG Monopoly, there's a baby Groot token that's going to be the source of some drama.

What would jail be in SDCC monopoly? The Starbucks line?

Speaking of parking, imagine CityLift handling that Con task:

https://twitter.com/AceParking/status/839617957328117760

CityLift reduces the square footage needed per car up to 80% by eliminating ramps, slabs and aisles altogether.

Apologises in advance for this little rant.

I saw Funko advertise a 3 piece Ramona Flowers dorbz set. I went straight to the site and looked to order it as it's limited to 2500.
Turns out Funko only ship to the US. I'm sorry... only to the US???!!! WTF!!!! Do they not realise it's 2017 and worldwide shipping is now a given?! No don't worry Funko. You keep your one country attitude and don't worry about all the other fans around the world. No no I insist. You stick to your antiquated sales methods. Keep those blinkers on.

Rant over. Sorry peeps.

I don't know why they are like that. Seems very narrow minded. I don't know if their shop exclusives show up anywhere else like Pop Cultcha or Forbidden Planet. That's how a lot of the international folks I know get the Funko exclusives from other US stores. I would be willing to order one for you and ship it to you or bring it to SDCC. I bought a set for myself. They are so cool. It's one of my favorite movies of all time.

It's just completely ridiculous. I want to give them money but they won't accept it because of them not moving forward.

Forbidden Planet do get some bits. It's mainly just the standard Funko's rather than the special editions.

It is very kind of you to offer. It still annoys me that I have to rely on the kindness of a fellow nerd to buy a nerd product.

And yes you are correct, it is one of the best films ever. Made ahead of its time. Give it five years and people will finally understand why it's such a great film 😀

GameStop customers, check in:

Quote
If you’ve shopped at GameStop.com between mid-September and early February, it’s possible your credit card information has been compromised according to a report by the web security blog, KrebsOnSecurity. After reaching out to the video game retailer about the breach, GameStop confirmed to KrebsOnSecurity that it had been notified by a third party that possible payment card data used for purchases on the company’s internet storefront were being sold on another website.

“That day a leading security firm was engaged to investigate these claims. Gamestop has and will continue to work non-stop to address this report and take appropriate measures to eradicate any issue that may be identified,” the company said in its statement to Krebs. Krebs is also reporting that CVV2s, the three-digit security codes on the backs of credit cards, are among the information that was stolen in addition to credit card numbers, expiration dates, and addresses. CVV2 information isn’t supposed to be stored by online stores, but hackers can use malicious software to copy the data before it’s encrypted and processed.

“We regret any concern this situation may cause for our customers,” GameStop said in its statement to Krebs. “GameStop would like to remind its customers that it is always advisable to monitor payment card account statements for unauthorized charges.” GameStop has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Long overdue:

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/27/theater/james-earl-jones-to-receive-lifetime-achievement-tony-award.html?_r=0

Quote
James Earl Jones is to be honored at this year’s Tony Awards with a special prize for lifetime achievement in theater.

The awards administration committee announced Thursday that Mr. Jones, a renowned stage, film and television actor with an unforgettably deep voice, would be given the recognition at the awards ceremony June 11.

Mr. Jones, 86, is a theater regular who has appeared in 20 Broadway plays, starting with “Sunrise at Campobello” in 1958. He most recently appeared in a revival of “The Gin Game” in 2015. He has won two Tonys, in 1969 for “The Great White Hope” (when Clive Barnes, a New York Times critic, wrote, “If anyone deserves to become that occasional thing, a star overnight, then Mr. Jones deserves no less”) and in 1987 for “Fences.” About that performance, Frank Rich, a critic for The Times, wrote, “A black man, a free man, a descendant of slaves, a menial laborer, a father, a husband, a lover — Mr. Jones’s Troy embraces all the contradictions of being black and male and American in his time.”

He has performed in multiple television shows, like “The Guiding Light” and “Roots,” and many films, like “Dr. Strangelove” and “The Lion King.” But he is best known as the voice of Darth Vader in the “Star Wars” films.

The Tony Awards previously announced two other honorary prizes: Baayork Lee, an actress, choreographer and director who founded the National Asian Artists Project and is best known as a member of the original cast of “A Chorus Line,” will receive the Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award, which recognizes volunteerism, while two longtime general managers, Nina Lannan and Alan Wasser, will receive Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theater.

The Tony Awards, presented by the Broadway League and the American Theater Wing, honor plays and musicals that are staged on Broadway each season. This year’s award nominees will be announced next Tuesday, May 2.

We're right there with you. I would love to see a graphic of a concert showing how people got their tickets and where all of the money went.

If you need a small laugh, right now I am at home really sick but dialed in to a long, long meeting at work. I keep having to blow my nose but I forgot to mute my phone, after the fourth time or so the person running the meeting finally yelled, "can people please mute their phones! Or at least whoever is having construction going on nearby!"

Was in a meeting this morning, and this one guy never mutes his phone, and it sounds like he is snorting cocaine, or something. Once the mute your phones plea goes out, we get sweet relief!

Although, I have been guilty of not muting. I said something under my breath once, and my cube mate got my attention, saying "You're not on mute" Thank goodness I was not cursing... LOL!

Rest and get better soon, George!

https://www.comic-con.org/guest/george-p%C3%A9rez

http://www.newsarama.com/34319-george-perez-gives-update-following-heart-attack-con-cancellation.html

Quote
Updated May 12, 2017: George Pérez has issued a new update on his health and recovery from a recent heart attack. According to the veteran creator, his prognosis is positive, but will require the cancellation of his remaining planned convention appearances for 2017. Here is Pérez's statement in full:

Hello again.

First of all I want to once again thank all the wonderful people who have sent me good wishes, positive thoughts and prayers regarding my recent heart attack. Although I feel much better now after the two operations, I have been warned by my cardiologist about the pitfalls of being too complacent or overconfident.

I have been reminded that my heart has been injured and weakened and that it will take time and patience to fully heal. My doctors (and my understandably frightened wife) were especially and specifically adamant about my need to avoid flying and participating in the marathon sketching and signing sessions I have done for so many years. It’s just more than my body can take, at least for the next several months. I am being set up for some cardio-rehab sessions and have hooked up with a new endocrinologist to help manage my diabetes. I'm also still undergoing treatments for my eyes as well, so it is going to be a pretty extensive overhaul for me, with the hopes of coming out a much improved version of my current self.

This harsh slap of reality is very stinging, but it is unavoidable. I'm a man of limitations right now and those limitations mean that I will now have to disappoint a lot of fans and cause major inconvenience to a lot of convention organizers who relied on me to help bolster attendance at their functions.

I hate this, I really do. I feel so much better than when I had the attack, but I'm not as healed as I felt I was. My engine is damaged and needs time to be repaired.

So, as should come as no surprise to anyone reading this now, I am forced, under doctor’s orders to cancel all convention appearances for at least the rest of the year. I've already contacted all the organizers, who were extremely kind and understanding, and they will be making announcements of their own once this update is made public.

I have also had to cancel other more personal travels, like a vacation with my wife in New York (including seeing Glenn Close in SUNSET BOULEVARD) and a wedding of a young couple closer than family to me. To put it mildly, this sucks. But, it’s what needs to be done right now if I'm ever to return to the convention circuit again (albeit at a slower pace).

One exception is an appearance at a charity event supporting the LOVE IS LOVE project to be held during MegaCon on Friday, May 26th between 6:30 & 7:30 (creators only) and 7:30 to 10 PM for paid attendees (limit of 150 tickets). I will only be signing & chatting only ( no sketches, sorry ), but it’s for a good cause and I hope I get to see a good number of fans there.

I have had a good life, and still do, and this is just a bump in the road. With proper maintenance the ruts in the road will be smoothed out. But until then, there is work I must do, and with the support and love of my wife, family, friends and fans, I will see you all again real soon!

Original story: George Pérez has given an update to fans following a heart attack that led him to cancel his appearance at this past weekend's East Coast Comic Con in Secaucus, New Jersey.

I am so genuinely flattered, humbled, and grateful for all the emails, texts, phone calls and messages that I’ve received regarding my latest medical situation. To clarify the facts to everyone: Yes, I did have a heart attack. I was on a plane leaving from Los Angeles, CA, heading to Secaucus, NJ for a comic convention when I started to feel some discomfort in my chest. It was mild and sporadic at first, but became more intense after I checked into my hotel in New Jersey.

I called the front desk and they called for an ambulance. I also phoned my longtime friend and art agent Spencer Beck, who contacted my wife Carol, who was visiting friends in England. He figured correctly that news of my affliction and possible speculations could fill the social networks, and didn’t want Carol to find out that way. At first it was speculated that I may have had blood clots that may have reached my heart or lungs, but a second EKG determined that I had indeed suffered a heart attack with some rather severe blockage in some of the vessels.

As of this writing, I have already undergone one operation to place a stent to clear the blockage on the right side of my heart and am scheduled to have the left side taken care of today. So far, recovery has been going well and life should be relatively normal after that, although I may have to pull back on the non-stop sketching-marathons that people have come to expect from me at conventions. There may even be a few cancelations, depending on medical advice.

I apologize in advance to those I may disappoint. With this new medical wrinkle added to my past issues regarding my eyesight, there are likely a good number of you feeling a bit sorry for me. Please, don’t be. I’ve had a great run and have been blessed not only with a great career, but also, thanks to all of you nice people buying video games, t-shirts, action figures, collected editions, and watching all those movies and TV shows, my royalty income allows me financial security for life. There are so many of my peers who do not have that luxury. Unfair, but true. So, if these bits of misfortune do need to happen to someone, let it be me. Granted, my output may be curtailed, but I will still be drawing, and loving it as much as ever. Thank you all for caring.

See you in the funny papers.

George Pérez

Is there a promotion system based on activity or something, been curious how/why that title is different on people!

I think it's based on number of posts. So at 50 you should be in the Exhibit Hall! So close ;-)

Quote
Stan Lee will be participating in a unique event August 22 in Los Angeles titled Extraordinary: Stan Lee. Compared to the classic NBC show This Is Your Life, Extraordinary: Stan Lee will have "The Man" joined by unspecified celebrity guests to give thanks to the comic book icon and highlight different periods in his life. The event is being organized by In-Theater Live, Agents of Mayhem, and Stan Lee Collectibles.

“Back when I started writing, I never could have dreamed that someday these little characters I thought up would connect with so many people in so many places, let alone on the silver screen... I’m just floored,” said Lee. “I’m so lucky to have such great friends and supportive fans who continue to inspire me and have kept me going.”

Extraordinary: Stan Lee is scheduled to take place August 22 at Los Angeles' Saban Theatre. In addition to the audience in attendee, fans across the United States will be able to watch the event liva via streaming to select theaters to be announced in July.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1705849268/nerd-fest-the-comic-convention-game

My friend, Dan Goodsell....creator of Mr. Toast, has a kickstarter with our pal Todd Webb doing the art~ It's a card and dice game that takes you through the con and you have to collect stuff to win the game. You also get free artwork! Whoo hooo!!

There are only a few days left. It's perfect for waiting in lines or just reliving the con!

Dan is the guy that made the Mr. Toast game that won the Hasbro contest. Yeah! Hasbro made his card game!! Now he teamed up with Todd Webb (He's the guy that does the dollar quick sketch of yourself or whatever) and has a cult following. These two guys are so amazingly nice and they need help to spread the word. So would you please share on your social media? Many hugs and kisses!!

Thanks for looking!

What I've learned in the past 15 days?    Don't ever take the computers at your work or school whichever the case may be, for granted especially insofar as they're a valuable tool in staying on top of the latest SDCC related news!

Fifteen days ago, the computer network at my work got hacked.   Must have a been a really good job because they're still nowhere close to bringing them back online.   Naturally there's no wifi at all and of course I work in a building (esp. being in the basement floor) where there's a weak signal for phones and tablets.

I usually enjoy this time of year and the daily tidbits of con news from the forums and SDCC unofficial blog but haven't really been able to keep up for the past 2 weeks.

Don't take those computers for granted!!!

Not only did they not figure it out by the end of the July 4th weekend, our computer systems are only partially functional now, 5 weeks later.   Still no internet access.

On top of that, my D23 + SDCC vacation request which I submitted last August and resubmitted last March just in case they forgot, they completely fumbled and forgot about.   Need that vacation more than ever now!!!

I'm growing concerned amidst swirling rumors that in the comics, Thor/Jane Foster may not survive her stage 4 cancer...to that end, I'm going to start the "If Jane dies, we riot" movement!

That sounds like something I would do.  :)

Fandom bashing/mocking is something that might come from muggles but non muggles as well?   Back at SDCC, I overheard someone remark rather condescendingly "people are still into My Little Pony?????".

I chose to walk away and not listen to the rest of the conversation but what I wanted to tell them was that "Why yes, and it's so successful for Hasbro that they have a movie coming in a few months with guest stars you might have heard of...Emily Blunt, Kristen Chenowith, Zoe Saldana, Liev Schreiber, Michael Pena...The tv show is going very strong too...it's the most relentlessly optimistic show on the air and inspires us to build a better world and also has had superb guest stars whom you may have heard of...Felicia Day, Patton Oswalt, William Shatner".

Of course, not everyone attending SDCC is going to be interested in everything featured there, that's just impossible, but I'm very taken aback that some would disparage fandoms that they're not a part of.

This always bothered me when Twilight was there.  A lot of people bashing it and bashing people for being into it.  For some reason people think it is cool to hate on people for liking popular things.

I say like what you want!  The haters are gone hate.

I would agree. Just because it's not what you're into doesn't mean it's bad. I think all of us have been on the wrong end of disparaging comments. We should be more considerate as fans.

And FWIW, while I wasn't impressed by the Twilight movies, I did enjoy the books (particularly the first one) as romance novels, which is how they were intended. And my kids both went through a MLP phase (and have a fondness for it now, although my son is embarrassed to mention it any longer).

Full disclosure: I read all 4 Twilight books and I think they are horrible.

However, I'd never even heard of Twilight the first time I encountered fans of the series. It was in line for Hall H whatever year Twilight was there first, and I was basically surrounded by Twilight fans. I found them mostly awful even then. They were all super excited, which was great, but they were also all talking about how they were the greatest most dedicated passionate fans of anything ever and nothing else had never come close. (Which I found... uniformed and annoying, to say the least.)

Then, during their panel (which I had to sit through for whatever I was waiting for), they screamed and sighed over every. single. answer. It was the most irritating panel I'd ever sat through.

I don't fault anyone for being a passionate fan of anything, but I do believe the ways in which many if not most Twilight fans expressed their fandom were obnoxious.

Twihards are a different breed.  There are still people out there thinking Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are secretly married and parents together.  Some "fans" take things too far.

My opinion is that people like to bash on other people's interests.  No idea why they do it, but they do.

One of my favorite things is seeing someone have a nerdgasm over finding a [whatever it may be] that they have been looking for whether or not I like what they found.

But I'm weird.

Awww, your son shouldn't be embarrassed at all!   In addition to all the positives I mentioned about the show, they have a lot of fun references - the season premiere had a Weeping Angel as well as a Predator handshake scene.   Also, a few seasons ago, there was an episode entitled "Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep" which many of us will recognize as a nod to "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" which many of us know is the basis for some movie called Blade Runner.

From my experience in the Disney fandom, it seems a lot of people are extremely possessive and protective of the things they like and if they feel it could be taken away or deemphasized or no longer relevant, they may tend to lash out towards whatever the new kid on the block is.   Currently there's a faction of Disney fans that are vehemently opposed to anything of Marvel and Star Wars  ???

Predator handshake was from Season 7 episode 1, "Celestial Advice" where Starlight greets Ember although not quite with the language that Arnold greets Carl Weathers with in Predator

Weeping angel is from Season 7 episode 10, "A Royal Problem".    This one I only know thanks to super super observant people in the fandom.   Princess Celestia is in the dream realm looking at everyone's dreams/nightmares.   Dr. Whooves (fandom name because Hasbro can't legally name him that) seems mortified of this statue which is highly reminiscent of a weeping angel and looks like he needs to avoid its stare.

It's called punk points.  Who has listen to the band longer or knew about them before anyone else.   It happens to everything once it gets popular.  I use to roll my eyes at people who did this in the punk scene.   I think it says more about our society then it does specifically about a fandom.

Although I must admit I was blaming it on the boys in the punk scene and now I can't since you tell me the girls in the twilight scene were doing the same thing.

Green Day actually couldn't return to the punk scene after they hit it big.   I still love them though!

'Walking Dead' Producers Claim Massive AMC Profits Scam in New Lawsuit

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr-esq/walking-dead-producers-claim-massive-amc-profits-scam-new-lawsuit-1029197

Quote

AMC has enjoyed record ratings for The Walking Dead, but will it survive a legal apocalypse? On Monday, in what could become the biggest ever profits case in television history, and one that deserves widespread attention as merger-hungry media companies grow ever more vertically consolidated, Walking Dead co-creator Robert Kirkman and notable series producers Gale Anne Hurd, Glen Mazzara and David Alpert have filed suit against AMC with the allegation they've been massively cheated.

The new case follows the one from Frank Darabont, the show's other co-creator, who was fired as executive producer in the middle of the second season and is demanding $280 million in an accounting lawsuit that has reached the summary judgment phase. Now, the other key creatives on the series are targeting significant damages of their own. With the participation of Kirkman, whose comic books served as source material for Walking Dead, and Hurd and Alpert, who continue to work on the series, AMC finds itself in court against those whose ongoing involvement is crucial to Walking Dead's and perhaps AMC's future.

"This case arises from a major entertainment conglomerate’s failure to honor its contractual obligations to the creative people — the 'talent,' in industry jargon — behind the wildly successful, and hugely profitable, long-running television series The Walking Dead," opens the complaint filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court. "The defendant AMC Entities exploited their vertically integrated corporate structure to combine both the production and the exhibition of TWD, which allowed AMC to keep the lion’s share of the series’ enormous profits for itself and not share it with the Plaintiffs, as required by their contracts."

Here's the full complaint. The claims are breach of contract, tortious interference and unfair or fraudulent business acts under California business code.

Like Darabont's lawsuit, the plaintiffs are questioning the amount "paid" by AMC Network to AMC's studio arm for the right to air the show. Because the companies are affiliated with each other, what's seen on Walking Dead profit participation statements are imputed license fees, meaning a stand-in figure that doesn't really mean that money has exchanged hands. During the first four seasons of Walking Dead, AMC was imputing a fee of $1.45 million per episode. That's now up to $2.4 million, but is still less than the non-imputed license fees of Better Call Saul (a Breaking Bad spinoff) and Mad Men, which are produced by non-affiliated Sony and Lionsgate, respectively, and don't command NFL primetime-type ratings as Walking Dead does.

"There can be no question that, if AMC Studios and AMC Network were not part of the same conglomerate, the story would be very different," states the complaint, later adding, "Those substantial license fees for Mad Men and Breaking Bad continued in seasons five and beyond, even though their ratings were a fraction of TWD’s. And while the AMC Network only obtained a limited number of playdates for those series as part of the comparatively-higher license fees it paid for them (both on television and its affiliated websites), the AMC Entities unilaterally took for themselves the right to run an unlimited number of runs of TWD in perpetuity on all AMC platforms."

In their own lawsuit, Darabont and his CAA agents are leaning on financial experts to make the case that the series should be imputing up to $30 million per episode, which over seven seasons would represent a staggering amount of money that AMC isn't booking in revenue.

Kirkman, Hurd, Mazzara and Alpert haven't yet gotten to the point of suggesting what the precise imputed license fee should be, but that's only a matter of time. In the meantime, they are running through other alleged ways they've been denied a fair share of profits. Among them are deductions taken by AMC for payments to other Walking Dead profit participants. They also object to how AMC turned down an offer from another party for international rights to the series "so that [AMC] could do a related-party deal for much less than the related party offered, again keeping the profits at conglomerate level and not passing them through to AMC Studios and the participants."

The lawsuit, being handled by Ron Nessim and other lawyers at Bird Marella, speaks of the decades-long rise of vertical integration in entertainment and media. The subject has always been controversial and continues to be so as a giant like AT&T proposes to buy a conglomerate like Time Warner. Over the years, creatives in Hollywood have been leery of the power concentration and have reacted to corporations both producing and distributing content with litigation. Past lawsuits over films from the Police Academy series to This Is Spinal Tap have accused studios of manipulating the amount of money going in and the expenses going out so as to essentially make profits disappear through practices like packaging, distribution fees, and marketing overhead.

"Hollywood accounting" is hardly a secret anymore, however, so when studios and talent deal with each other these days, the negotiators representing talent are mindful of how things can go wrong. But that doesn't mean there's no room for ambiguity and continued legal fighting.

Kirkman, whose deal entitles him to 5 percent of profits from Walking Dead, came to what his attorneys say was a "related-party provision" that guaranteed that AMC's transactions with affiliated companies would be on monetary terms comparable to transactions with non-affiliated companies. Alpert, who got 2.5 percent of profits, Hurd, who got 7.5 percent, and Mazzara, who took over Darabont's role as the showrunner for a couple of seasons and got 1.5 percent, each cite provisions in their own deals including most-favored-nations clauses that allegedly amounted to protection from AMC self-dealing.

In other words, the Walking Dead executive producers say they thought they had it all figured out only to be blindsided.

AMC, of course, hasn't yet filed any response to the latest lawsuit, but in the Darabont case, AMC has been arguing that license fees for Mad Men, Breaking Bad and other shows are irrelevant as the imputed license fee itself became the answer to calculating contingent compensation in the context of studio licensing to its network affiliate. Represented by Marc Kasowitz and others at his firm, AMC has contended that fee reflects a fair negotiation and suggested that those upset are now trying to achieve through post-agreement litigation what they couldn't through pre-deal negotiation. AMC has also touted millions of dollars recently sent to profit participants.

In response to the newest lawsuit, an AMC spokesperson says, "These kinds of lawsuits are fairly common in entertainment and they all have one thing in common — they follow success. Virtually every studio that has had a successful show has been the target of litigation like this, and The Walking Dead has been the No. 1 show on television for five years in a row, so this is no surprise. We have enormous respect and appreciation for these plaintiffs, and we will continue to work with them as partners, even as we vigorously defend against this baseless and predictably opportunistic lawsuit."

Next week, a New York judge will hold an oral hearing about the summary judgment motions in the Darabont case. What already was going to be a consequential showdown has now become even more so by multiples thanks to this newest case. Although the Kirkman lawsuit doesn't specify a target for compensatory and punitive damages, based on what Darabont's lawyers have computed, damages could approach a billion dollars. But even putting aside the huge monetary stakes, the fight over how AMC has treated accounting on the most successful cable television show ever will be felt in the industry for quite some time. It will surely influence new dealmaking moving forward.

Ugh just had a conversation with one of those people that the new movies and comics aren't what they were when he first read them so none of it should have ever been made.  That all they are doing is making them to make money.  That argument puzzles me because that is what they were doing the first round and since when does something have to end because it's not the original version?

Aren't we still re-telling Shakespeare?

To me the idea of retelling the same story the same way sounds boring.   I like new interpretations, the progress forward, and the new additions.

To me the reason re-makes fail is because they try to copy.   The new planet of the Apes series is amazing because they to the heart and soul and re-told the story.

Yeah, sometimes people can get a little purist.

One of the things that I like about comic books is that they can change a character by different writers or artists working on a character.  One of the paraphrased quotes in the Cap 1 DVD is "He's been throwing that shield around for 80 years and people are still coming up with new things he can do with it."

And while the comics will always be first in my eyes over other media, some of the interpretations on screen are fantastic and have make me like aspects of the comics more.

For example, Ledger's Joker which was a fantastic take, but the more surprising for me was Cap.  I had never been a big fan of his in the comics (nor did I hate him, he was just bland to me), but because of the movies I have a better appreciation for the character.

I do have to admit that the X-movies renditions of the Dark Phoenix Saga and the Wolverine limited series did hurt me on the level of my soul, but i just pretend they don't exist and problem solved.  :)

When I hate a movie, I just remind myself how many people it employed and that at some point that was someone's dream. Someone worked hard writing it, people worked hard shooting it. A lot of people worked really hard on things and then the viewing public just poops on them without thinking of any of that. So, I always remind myself of that when I start to feel hateful about stuff.

The part about GA is a different way of looking at it I guess, I think adaptations that do something fun with a unexpected or underutilized character are great fun. Like Ant-Man. (Also, I think your co-worker might be reading the wrong Green Arrow comics.)

On the other hand I know I can be pretty critical of things, doggedly so in some cases. I'm like Madeline, "They say it's good to let your grudges go, but I don't know, I'm quite fond of my grudge. I tend it like a little pet."

But I totally agree it needs to be balanced, we had a long plane trip recently and the airline actually had a pretty good selection of movies so I binged. Lego Batman and Shin Godzilla were exactly what I hoped for, and The Killing Joke just left me confused so let's leave those for another time. But I really didn't care much for Kong: Skull Island, Ghost in the Shell, and (I know I'll get flak for this so I'll write it small,) John Wick 2. BUT all of those movies looked amazing. Great fx, filmography, you name it ... I would love to see the storyboards. but I just didn't care for the stories I guess.

Back to random, and to little pets. It's a little cooler today but it's been so hot lately that our dog has claimed the guest bathroom, with its nice cool tiles, as his new domain.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I48AOi-WtXc&t=1s

For some reason I thought it'd be Hoechlin since he's, like, the baseball guy.  Even though you were talking about it all day, I did a double take when I realized it was Dylan instead.

Dylan's a huge baseball fan. When he was doing promotion for Scorch Trials, he went on the MLB Network and got to call the highlights for the Mets. There was a big push a few years ago to get him to throw out the first pitch - the Mets even tweeted him about it. I'm happy for him that he got to do it because it was one of his life goals.

Funny enough, Hoechlin actually threw out the first pitch at a Dodgers' game in, I think, 2012. Dylan was catching for him.

Hoechlin also did the celebrity all-star game last year.

I...know a lot about this.

I just had the most hellish commute. My commute is normally ~1 hour and I take one train. Tonight it took me 3 hours, and I had to take five trains and a bus.

That was really cool and so true. I struggle with this kind of stuff every day, a man walking up trying to take over what I am doing, ect. Or looking around for another man to help them when I am right there. We have an IATSE local here and I have always figured if I ever did get laid off, I might take a resume there and try to get in as I have a few friends in this local.

Just watched the video and this is eye opening in the sense that San Francisco is such a big city. You would think that they'd be more open about it. I've never worked on the West Coast in theatre, so this video is very informative. I began working in 2005 in New York City. I worked in film, as an office production assistant, and I tried working as a set production assistant, I've worked as a sound operator, lighting operator, electrician in theatre and yes, Women are outnumbered, although it is changing. I had the fortunate opportunity to work at The Public as an electrician. There were always about 3-4 of us (and about 5-6 other guys) on any shift I worked on. One of the amazing things was the assistant lighting tech for The Public as a whole, was a woman (and of course the head was a man.)

I still remember the one time we had to carry mult down the stairs in a rolling bin. I came to help lift it and we all joked at how heavy the stupid thing was and how stupid that the theatre didn't have proper loading area. We carried all the lights, cables, hardware through the front door of some Off-/Off-Broadway theatre in Manhattan. None of the males at the time said to me that I shouldn't help carry it because I was weaker. All in all, I had a really great time working with the guys, but then again, the guys I worked with were younger and closer to my age at the time (25-35?). The only time I had issues, was with a theatre on the Upper East Side, and that was with the people who owned the theatre, not my employer.

But have I ever been passed over for a position? Absolutely, though more often than not, it's because I'm an outsider. I only learned about lighting and sound during college. I tried to participate as much as I could in theatre when I was in high school, but I was attending high school in Beijing, China. We didn't get a real theatre until after I had graduated. I had a really difficult time understanding that as a "free-lancer", I really had to chase after that gig. I have confidence issues and that really made it hard for me to be competitive. Plus, I only worked non-union. Sorry for the long response and a little bit of a rant.

Does anyone else have AT&T as a cell phone service provider?

I just switched to one of the AT&T unlimited plans and it looks like I'll be able to save quite a bit of money and get unlimited data and get HBO for free as long as I stay on the unlimited plan.

Their coverage sucks around here but i've very rural. I would consider moving to AT&T if i would get coverage 95% of the time.
