Title: SDCC 2018 Child Badges Transitioning to Junior Badges
Post by: ninjagoblin on July 25, 2017, 02:54:48 PM
I'm sorry if this question was asked in here before, if it has i have not found it.

I'm planning (read that as "praying to all the Nerd/Sci-Fi/Fiction Gods") to bring my niece and two nephews to SDCC in 2018. However there is a small hiccup. I know children 12 and under are free with a paid adult admission. My oldest Nephew will be 14 long before tickets go on sale so I am not worried about him. But my niece and other nephew (twins) will turn 13 in June of 2018. Not a big deal except CCI wont let us create Member IDs for them until after they turn 13 which means we would be creating IDs for them after ticket sales had closed. Does anyone have any idea how I can get them tickets in this situation? Do we just walk up and tell them they are still 12 even though they will have been 13 for less than a month? That feels dishonest to me.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

They'll still be eligible for a child badge. Dates are from last year but it should still apply next year.

"If you are age 12 or under before October 1, 2016, you do not need to buy a badge for Comic-Con 2017."

https://www.comic-con.org/cci/2017/child-badge-policy

They'll turn 13 well after badge sales so they can still get a child badge free.

I remember having the exact same question some years ago :)  The exact date may change a bit from year to year but there always is one and it will be mentioned explicitly on the CCI website. There is a small possibility that you will encounter staff that is unaware of the transition date (it happened to us once) so I would print it out or have the webpage ready to pull up on your phone.

I'm going to designate this as the "SDCC 2018 Child Badges Transitioning to Junior Badges" thread and will rename this as such.  I'm sure that other con-going parents and families will have similar questions.

------

Forum Housekeeping:
Renamed from "Unusual Children's Badge question" to "SDCC 2018 Child Badges Transitioning to Junior Badges."
Locked the "SDCC 2017 - Children Becoming Juniors" thread in the meantime.

I will unsticky the 2017 thread and sticky the 2018 thread at a later date (probably sometime within a month, just in case anyone needs to reference the old thread after Comic-Con 2017).

I had to prove policy to SDCC at badge pickup.  Child badge for my 10 year old was flawless, but my 13 year old (turned 13 in April 2017 so 12 as of the cutoff date) caused us to go to another line for badge solutions.  Once there, both the volunteer and the paid CCI person were trying to charge me for my 13 year old's badge.  I had to pull up the webpage on my smartphone and prove to them that she is free.  They wound up coding her as 12 and gave her a badge with RFID (which did not work the next day either, but that is another story).

Be prepared to prove policy to CCI at badge pickup.  Hopefully they are better trained and prepared next time.

I never had to show anything until the year my kids were 13 (but still qualified for the child badge). I had a similar experience, where both years I had to quote the policy, show it to them, and then show my kids' birth certificates to prove that they were 12 on the cutoff date.

We never had to show any ID for my son when he was a child badge or into becoming a junior badge. I do believe one person (back when you picked up at Town & Country) did ask for a school ID or something and I told them he was homeschooled (which he was/is) and they didn't question it further. We did have a slight issue with getting his first junior badge (some issue where it wouldn't allow him to register during pre-reg as one of my 3 people), but CCI was great and worked with me. Overall, the whole child into junior thing was easy for us.

this was just posted, https://www.comic-con.org/cci/2017/child-badge-policy

Child Badge Policy

Children (age 12 and under) are free with a paying adult! Children do not need to register for a Comic-Con Member ID to receive a complimentary badge. You may register two children per paid adult attendee. Adults will be required to provide emergency contact information for any child registrant. Please visit the Attendee Registration Area when you arrive onsite for more information.

To accommodate the transition from child to junior (age 13-17), we have set a static date to determine who is considered a child for Comic-Con 2018. If you are age 12 or under on September 30, 2017, you do not need to buy a badge for Comic-Con 2018. You may attend as a child, with a paying adult. If you are age 13 or older before September 30, 2017, you must create a Comic-Con Member ID and purchase a badge for Comic-Con 2018.

Comic-Con 2018 Child-to-Junior Badge Validation

Did you attend Comic-Con 2017 as a child but are now a junior attendee? Children who attended Comic-Con 2017 with a paid adult attendee that are age 13 or older on September 30, 2017, are eligible to participate in Comic-Con 2018 Returning Registration!

To qualify for Returning Registration, you must create a Comic-Con Member ID account. Make sure to select "Junior" as your membership type! Once you have created a new account and confirmed your email address, log in to your Member ID account, select the “Registration Info” tab, and enter the 9-character number from the back of your Comic-Con 2017 child badge. The 9-character badge number is located on the back of the child badge, under the emergency contact phone number. All child badge numbers start with a “903”, “901”, or “777” prefix.

If you already have a Comic-Con Member ID account, log into your exitsing account and follow the steps above.

If the child-to-junior validation link is not visible in the “Registration Info” tab, your birthdate is not in the correct range for child-to-junior validation, or you accidentally registered as an adult membership type during new account creation. If the validation link is not visible, please use the "contact us" feature before September 20, 2017 to correct your membership type or birthday.

You must validate your Comic-Con 2017 child badge number by September 20, 2017 to be eligible to participate in Comic-Con 2018 Returning Registration.

I received the following email from CCI. Which is interesting in itself, because it was THIS YEAR that my youngest child first attended on a paid badge (i.e. he transitioned to a junior last year).

Quote
If your child attended Comic-Con 2017 with a paid adult attendee, they may be eligible to participate in our Returning Registration badge sale for Comic-Con 2018!
Children who will be age 13 or older on September 30, 2017, are eligible to participate in Comic-Con 2018 Returning Registration as a junior.

A child’s eligibility will first need to be validated using their child badge from Comic-Con 2017. For instructions on how to register for eligibility, click here (http://www.comic-con.org/cci/2018/child-badge-policy). The child-to-junior validation process must be completed by September 20, 2017. Remember, you will need the physical Comic-Con 2017 child badge to complete the validation process.

Comic-Con 2018 Returning Registration will be open to all Comic-Con 2017 paid attendees. First-time attendees, professionals, guest of professionals, trade professionals, exhibitors (and exhibitor-purchased attendee badges), volunteers, staff, complimentary passes, and press are not eligible to participate in Returning Registration.

I suspect the second September date should be October 20th or later?

If you turn 13 in September 2017, the Junior Member ID can't be created until October 1st, 2017.

In the past, the Junior validation process lasted about six weeks.

It's always been this way. They pick a static date and if your child is 12 or younger on that date, they are eligible for the free child badge at the next SDCC. If your child is 13 or older on that date, but attended on a free child badge this year, they are then eligible for returning registration as a junior.

However, to be eligible, you must make them a member ID account. You cannot make a member ID account for your child until the first day of the first month AFTER their birthday month. So yes, if your child turns 13 on September 29, then they are 13 on September 30, which would mean that they need a junior badge for SDCC 2018. But they would be eligible for returning registration if they had attended SDCC 2017 on a free child badge. You would have to make them a member ID account on or after October 1 (the first day of the first month following their birthday month) and then verify them for returning registration eligibility, using the code on the physical child badge they used at SDCC 2017.

You're right that there is a small window, for children turning 13 during the month of September, who cannot set up a member ID account to make themselves eligible for returning registration before September 20 (since they can't make the member ID account until October 1). If anyone here has a child in this position, you should contact CCI immediately to explain the issue.

I have a question - According to SDCC the Sept Child Badge cut-off references Returning Registration - Does this mean that there would be a different Child Badget cut-off date later for Open Registration - If so, how would they know when you showed up to get a child badge when you get to SDCC - Does the RIFD badge indicated that you registered during Returning or Open reg? Also, what about Pros with Children - will there be a separate child badge cut-off date for them too?

I am running into nothing but issues with this process.  My son turns 13 on September 30th.  Since there was no way to create his member ID until Oct 1st I contacted the Comic Con folks but have not received any information back.  I am a little worried since their auto reply email says that they are at the San Diego Convention center and will get back to me when SDCC 2017 ends, so that is a little out of date.

I have another I am trying to register for 2018 but his birthday already passed so creating the Member ID was easy, now the issue is that the code on the back of his badge is only 5 digits.  It gives me an error that it requires 6.  I send a second email to them.  Has anyone else run into this issue?  Anyone gotten around it somehow?  Thanks

No. The child badge cutoff date is the same for all badges. If your child is 12 on September 30, then they can attend SDCC 2018 as a child on a free badge. If your child is 13 on September 30, they must attend on a paid junior badge.

The ability to participate in returning registration is a courtesy for parents who now have to buy an extra badge when they didn't in past years. You can imagine how it would be if the parents got badges in returning registration and then their child had to wait until open registration and didn't get one. But this has nothing to do with children who did NOT attend SDCC 2017. If the child did not attend in 2017, then the September 30 deadline still applies; they will just have to wait until open registration, like an adult who did not attend in 2017.

Wait … what does this mean again?

Children who turn 13 or older on September 30, 2017 and attended Comic-Con 2017 with a paid adult must purchase a junior badge if they wish to attend Comic-Con 2018. But fear not! They are eligible for Returning Registration!

Ahhh, I see! My child turns 13 on August 30, 2017, so she will need a junior badge. Where do I start?

First things first! A Member ID is required for every badge purchase. When creating, make sure to select "Junior" as the membership type! Click here to sign up for a Member ID today! [2]

All finished! She has created a Member ID. What’s the next step?

Once you have created a Comic-Con Member ID and confirmed the email address, log in to the Member ID account [2], select the “Registration Info” tab, and enter the child badge number. The badge number is located on the back of the Comic-Con 2017 child badge, under the emergency contact phone number. All child badge numbers start with a “901”, “900”, or “777” prefix. You will need to select the correct prefix from the dropdown list and enter the remaining characters in the field that follows. You will not need to input the dash. The deadline to validate a child badge is October 6, 2017!

But she already has a Member ID account!

Great! Log in to the existing Member ID account [2] and follow the steps above.

I’ve followed all the steps and the child-to-junior validation link isn’t visible! Help!

The birthdate may not be in the correct range for child-to-junior validation, or you accidentally registered as an adult membership type during new account creation. If the validation link is not visible, please use the "contact us" feature before October 6, 2017 to correct your membership type or birthdate. Remember, only children who attended Comic-Con 2017 are eligible to participate in the child-to-junior badge validation process.

What happens next?

If your validation process rivalled the flight speed of Superman and Silver Surfer combined, the next step is to simply … wait. Returning Registration dates will be announced soon!

Now, go forth and validate that child badge before October 6, 2017! Class dismissed!

I got a reminder email today.

Hello

This is a friendly reminder that the deadline for child-to-junior badge validation is quickly approaching!

-    If your child is age 12 or under on September 30, 2017, you do not need to buy a badge for Comic-Con 2018 and they may still attend as a child, with a paying adult.

-    If they are age 13 or older on September 30, 2017, you must create a Comic-Con Member ID and purchase a junior badge to attend Comic-Con 2018.

Click here, or check out our latest Toucan blog here for instructions on how to complete the child-to-junior validation process before October 6, 2017. You will need the physical Comic-Con 2017 child badge to complete the validation process.

We encourage you to bookmark Toucan — the official blog of Comic-Con and WonderCon — and follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for important registration announcements!

Thank you,

I have a child transitioning to junior this year (my nephew) and a child who is 13 but turned after the cut off in April (my son).

But my son hit puberty HARD and is almost 6 feet tall with size 12 in mens shoes.  He is also broad-shouldered and could pass for 16 or older.  He won't pass for 12.

We had to get him a child badge because we literally could not get him a member ID before the sale because he was too young.   I contacted CCI to ask if I could just buy him a junior badge to stop people from assuming he stole some kid's badge at the doors, but they just keep quoting policy and telling me he's under the limit and therefore gets a child badge.  I am sick with worry about it.

This was our son too -- definitely didn't look 12. Our son is/was also very tall/big for his age - even now he's 17, even taller, and he has a beard, everyone thinks he older than our 20-year-old. LOL

I think this is mostly about approaching it all with great confidence. You know your son still qualifies for a child badge, you've done nothing wrong. The only "issue" we had was during his last year of a child badge. When getting his badge, I was asked for an ID for him, I said he doesn't have one, she asked if I had a school ID and I said he's homeschooled (he was) and she didn't question it further. Our son would have loved to have had a junior badge his last year or two with the child badge, but that's not how it works (he just didn't want a badge that says "child" on it).

For me, I almost dare someone to say something ;) because I know we've followed all the rules. But if you need extra peace of mind, bring an ID if he has one (maybe get one before you go?), and if he doesn't, take a scan or photo of his birth certificate and keep it on your phone. I think that if someone questioned you and you had that ready to go, they would leave it be.

We had the same issue with our son (literally, right down to the detail about him hating having a children's badge. He would keep turning it around to you couldn't see the big CHILD on it :) ) Whether or not you get any pushback, and if you do how much you get, really depends on the person you are dealing with. One year we had a lot of pushback, the next year none at all since the person we were registering with also had a tall kid. Per the last comment, I would bring any identification you have, school id, passport, etc. They may also ask your son some questions about his birthday, address, things like that.

I wouldn't worry about it too much.  I don't think security care that much to be that scrutinizing of badges.

I wouldn't worry about it too much....as someone else already mentioned, just bring his school ID if you are concerned. Our friends had a 6ft tall 13 year old a few years back and were worried but no one really questioned them.

I had similar issues with both of my kids when they turned 13. My son was just tall, but my daughter was quite developed. I definitely got strange looks when taking them for the child badge, but I just whipped out their birth certificates and quoted policy at them (about the cutoff date and then pointing out the birthday on the certificate) and I got the badges. Just be prepared to show proof of age and have the website policy available to show on your phone.

Does the junior badge look different than the adult badge this year?? Does it say junior on the badge?

It just has the letter J at the bottom right of the badge, right below where the badge's days are listed.
