Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash all team up for DC Comic’s version of The Avengers. However, this is a darker film that the light-hearted Marvel get togethers. This film deals with the realisation of death is forever and also that aliens, aka immigrants, are still be persecuted in this day and age. So there are dark themes at play here. While the immigrants storyline doesn’t fully form, the death of Superman is very interesting and we see Bruce Wayne more than Batman. This is a man who is wrestling with his own demons when the rest of the Justcie League need him to lead them against a villain called Steppenwolf (not the band). The getting together of the League is entertaining and, at times, fast paced action. The CG visuals are laid on very thickly, however that is the universe that DC films has created so once you accept that it doesn’t look real in any way shape or form then actually the film is a thoroughly entertaining watch that blasts it way through large set piece to another large set piece. DC Films have learnt their lesson that audiences don’t want to see whole cities be destroyed anymore. So have toned it down greatly here. Well... sort of because Steppenwolf is trying to destroy the entire planet. But this is where the film doesn’t work, when the big villain is too wishy-washy. The character doesn’t look or feel all-powerful and, ultimately, a devious God. He comes across more as a mid-level threat boss that you would see in a computer game. Considering DC Comics have all the best villains, this one is rather poor.
Yet that doesn’t stop the film being a good superhero comic book movie because really it’s all about the good guys. The Flash and Cyborg, while secondary characters, still get interesting storylines and are included in the League throughout. Aquaman does more in the film than I think most are anticipating. I was surprised at how well that character comes across. However, the standouts once again are Batman and Wonder Woman. Affleck’s Batman is more world weary than we’ve seen before and we see a different side to him here - one that has almost given up. Which is an interesting storyline to follow and one that actually offers something more than simply a rich man dressing as a Bat. Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman stole the Batman Vs Superman film, her solo outing was excellent and here she just continues that trend of being a fierce female who is ready and willing to be upfront and take on all of the mightiest foes. So basically more of the same from Wonder Woman, and why not as she kicks ass spectacularly.
The film was directed by Zack Snyder. However, he left before the project was completed so in stepped Joss Whedon to a few re-shoots to apparently “lighten the tone” of the film. Personally, I think the comedy aspect of the film doesn’t work and for once Whedon has got it wrong. It’s the darkness of the DC and the overall story that is most entertaining. So while DC Films still have a few more issues to sort out in terms of tone, Justice League is a good step up in terms of overall story and character development. It is a lean two hours of rip-roaring superhero action.
