Also does anyone have a favorite hotel away from downtown close to a shuttle stop?  It looks like the Doubletree or the Marriott take the least amount of time to get downtown?

Cost is not really a factor as long as it's under $400/nt.  I would love for her to be able to just walk next door to the con but at the same time, we are planners and I just don't see us waiting until May to know if we have a hotel or not.  So I may have answered my own question.
What dates are you looking to stay?  I noticed that the Wyndham Bayside is currently under $350 per night from Wed thru Mon with free cancellation.  I believe this hotel is on a shuttle stop.
You may want to look into that if the price isn't too steep.

plus the hotel farther out (early bird hotels) are cheaper then downtown...
i think there is one hotel that's also on the trolley route- your daughter can take the shuttle downtown & you the trolley to anywhere on the route-

This looks like it might be the DoubleTree in Mission Valley on Hazard Drive.  Can anyone confirm?

It may or may not work through the 3rd party sites, but worth a try if they don't charge you up front.

Yeah TardisMom I did think about what we would do and was trying to decide what location would be better.  But I figured I would wait and research if she gets a badge (right now the only thing I know we will do is go to the zoo!).  So "Hotel Circle" is the Mission Valley hotels then?

How reliable would Uber or Lyft be to get downtown?   My boss mentioned getting a VRBO on the beach and getting downtown that way but I am imagining surge pricing and horrendous traffic and the drivers cancelling altogether.

Also does anyone have a favorite hotel away from downtown close to a shuttle stop?  It looks like the Doubletree or the Marriott take the least amount of time to get downtown?

Yes, Mission Valley = Hotel Circle.  It is along both sides of the I-8, east of I-5.

We were staying at Pacific Beach the first year we attended SDCC.  We took the city bus to the trolley and rode the trolley in to the convention center.  If your daughter ends up getting Thursday/Sunday you might want to consider something like that, if she would enjoy some beach time.  Also we have a friend who stays in La Jolla and Ubers in.

Both the DoubleTree on Hazard and Marriott Mission Valley are close to trolley stops. They are also two of the better hotels in the area. Nice facilities near shopping areas with dining and shopping options. The Marriott has a nice pool and sauna. There is a group of regular con goers who stay there every year.
