Many think of the artist and the writer as the masterminds behind all great comics. Little do they know how much credit should go to the colorists, inkers, and letterers who put in hours of work only to receive minimal recognition. Jessica Tseang (founder, The Comic Book Girl, Little Geek Girls) leads a discussion with Dave Lanphear (letterer, DC Comics's Future Quest Showcase, Matt Wagner's Mage), Le Beau Underwood (inker, Marvel's Deadpool, Spider-Man, DC Comics's Suicide Squad), and veteran DC and Marvel colorists on how the comic book industry can change, the importance of their work, a brief look into their daily lives, and how to break into their career. There will also be a Q&A for budding colorists, inkers, and letterers.

Warner Archive Collection celebrates its 25th anniversary of Batman: The Animated Series with a look back at the landmark animated theatrical release, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, which is making its Blu-ray debut this year. Bruce Wayne and Batman are forced to confront issues on several fronts as Bruce deals with the return of his lost love-Andrea Beaumont-while Batman is accused of being the mysterious vigilante knocking off prominent Gotham mob figures. While the city demands Batman be brought to justice, the Joker arrives on the scene to further complicate matters, determined to annihilate his old archenemy, this new vigilante, or both. Superhero animation guru and executive producer Bruce Timm, Eric Radomski, legendary Batman voice Kevin Conroy, co-screenwriter Alan Burnett, and Warner Archive Podcast hosts D. W. Ferranti and Matthew Patterson will offer a glimpse at the remastered footage and discuss the creation of this beloved thriller. R. Sikoryak (Masterpiece Comics) is a master of the satirical graphic novel adaptation. Heidi Macdonald (The Beat, Publishers Weekly) leads a conversation with Sikoryak about his two most recent projects: Terms & Conditions, which is a 99-page, word-for-word adaptation of the iTunes terms and conditions agreement, and The Unquotable Trump, which sets Donald Trump quotes from the 2016 presidential election in classic comic book covers, employing hero and villain tropes to devastating effect.

American Gods: Collaboration to the Nth Degree

Scott Hampton will take the audience step by step through the process of making a comics page for the Dark Horse American Gods comic, beginning with the text from the novel by Neil Gaiman, then to script and layout from P. Craig Russell, next to lettering by Rick Parker, then to finished line art, and finally painting and digital coloring by Scott. Scott's work on Silverheels from Pacific Comics in 1983 is regarded as the first continuing painted comic of US origin. His work includes illustrations for Batman, The Sandman, Black Widow, Hellraiser, and Star Trek, as well as Magic: The Gathering cards.

Cataloging and collection development practices for comic books, especially when it comes to age ranges and placement, can make librarians want to tear their hair out. In this session, the discussion will focus on understanding the content that justifies the labels of middle grade, young adult, or adult. It will also address the question of "Does 'T' really mean for teen?" The panelists will provide their insights on how to manage a series that starts in young adult and ends R-rated. Additionally, because comics are targets for censorship, they will also review how librarians can handle challenges to material and banned books and continue to fulfill the American Library Association's statement on access to library resources and services to minors.
