Starting the conversation.

[member=4892]miclpea[/member] has written a mini review and episode recap of Episode 1 for the FoCC blog.

Here is the link: http://friendsofcc.com/2017/05/03/recap-american-gods-the-bone-orchard/

Please be sure to check it out.

Personally I attended the SDCC panel and the NerdHQ panel last year.

American Gods promises to be the new Game of Thrones. The first episode is truly awesome.

This show is PHENOMENAL. I'm so excited for the rest of the season.

Posting before I see episode 2, since it will probably make me realize I was totally wrong about some things.

First off, great premiere, I feel spoiled to have so much good TV right now. Loved the opening with the wonderfully elegant Ibis narrating and scribing the first "Coming to America" story. Kind of hoping that each episode starts with a different one. Casting is perfect, McShane of course but also especially Shadow.

But, (and look how tiny I made that But.) But I do have a few nits to pick. I use that term deliberately, these are small and harmless things but I need to deal with them since they're starting to itch a little.

So in the scene with the Vikings on the beach, that one part where the arm gets chopped off, still holding a sword, and flies gracefully through the air to impale someone else? My first thought was to wonder if the kid who wrote Axe Cop is grown up now and consulting on the show. Yes the show is on Starz and you can do whatever you want but that has already been demonstrated quite sufficiently by Ash vs Evil Dead. (If it turns out that this is taken from a saga I will cheerfully eat my words.)

On the other hand, I didn't know what to expect with the introduction to Bilquis but it was smart, as an adaptation, to put that in right away and deal with one of the most infamous parts of the book.

A bigger concern I have is with Shadow. In the book he's a bit of a blank, as so many protagonists are, but now we are seeing him as a character and don't have access to as much of his internal dialog. So when he agrees to work with Wednesday it struck me as off, as we hadn't seen anything about his character that made it seem like a decision he would make. It's different in the book, partly because of the internal dialog thing, but more so I think because he is our proxy in this world, and we know that's were the story is going and that's where we want to go. With Shadow as his own more fully-fledged character it seemed impulsive.

So only giving it a 99.9% for now, and very much looking forward to episode 2.

Just watched the first episode and I am hooked.  Great acting.  Superb dialog.  I will probably be watching it again plus episode 2 tonight.  Has anyone read the comic published by Dark Horse?  Does it compliment the show or is it its own thing?

It's its own thing. Both follow the book pretty closely, the comic maybe more so. I like the way the comic is done quite a lot but I've decided to hold off reading the comic until the tv season is over, mainly since the look of the characters is so different I find it distracting.

Episode 3 was incredibly strong. The opening scene with Anubis was amazing. (Not to mention the cat :) )

This has become my favorite current series by far. And has so far been one of the best adaptations I've seen. Almost all of the divergences from the book make the story stronger in my opinion, like dedicating more time to Laura Moon and giving her a bigger role. I particularly like what they've done with the "Coming to America" segments, not only using them to start episodes which works well on TV but also they way they are using them to introduce a character or a concept that will be important later on.

It is unquestionably the best new show of the year so far. I'm completely hooked on it.

Last Sunday's episode, A Murder of Gods, was good as usual and a mirror to what is practically going on in some places in America.  Favorite character, by far, is Mad Sweeney!  His interactions with "Dead Wife" are very entertaining.  I am sure there will be a panel at CC and I will be there!

On the odd chance that anyone is enjoying the show and has not already read the book. I would actually try to hold off on the book until after season 2, they have hinted at the story line and it's one of those things where it would be great not to know the twists. I shall say no more ;)

I read the book over 10 years ago and I am finding I barely remember the story.  Which is fantastic, I get to learn it all over again!

Thinking it might take 2-3 maybe up too 5 seasons to tell the story.

I'm glad they're taking their time and filling in the story. Episode 6 was almost all new material that wasn't in the book, though I know Gaiman has talked about the town with a Vulcan statue before.

They've left out and changed stuff but they also add more so I think its been a good trade off so far.  He's also talked about writing another one set ~10 years after this one ends.

I don't get why it's rated so highly. It's pretty good but very slow moving. It's episode 6 and hardly anything has happened.

That's an interesting point. It doesn't feel that slow to me but I am also very biased from familiarity with the book. I was actually quite surprised at the ending of episode 6, since it was much more direct action than I would expect from Wednesday. The acting and production quality are great, and my sense is that they are taking time to build the world and flesh out the characters, many of whom are getting much more attention in the series than they did in the book.  I guess we'll see how the season ends up..
