Title: Silicon Valley Comic Con - San Jose CA April 21-23, 2017
Post by: hikanteki on June 06, 2016, 03:05:10 PM
From the Volunteers group -- the organization in charge of volunteering will not be returning to SVCC 2017 because it is the week after Celebration in Florida. If this is correct, then the dates will be April 21-23...same weekend as C2E2 just like 2016.

EDIT (July 13): Dates confirmed! http://svcomiccon.com

So you got this info from a volunteering group!

Thanks for the scoop!

Although... this is inconsistent with what we heard from the programming director back at the con, when he said it would be 'in March'.

Sure thing! Yeah, all we got before this was “March” which it also said in the program. Since they didn’t have exact dates yet, it just sounded like they were shooting for March but didn’t have anything confirmed yet.

I find it curious that they don't have a date set yet.  They had the March 2016 date set and announced after BigWow in 2015.
I wonder if they're shopping the venue.  I hope not. I'd like to see them stay in San Jose, at lease for a few more years.

More evidence for April. I missed the loudspeaker announcement, but from: http://www.bleedingcool.com/2016/03/24/thoughts-on-the-first-silicon-valley-comic-con/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+BleedingCool+%28Bleeding+Cool+Comic+News+%26+Rumors%29

I look forward to the return of Silicon Valley Comic Con next year in either March or April. (The program guide said March. An announcement over the loudspeaker said April.)

Dates are confirmed!

They’re also adding the South Hall, City National Civic, and California Theatre as venues. YES!!!  ;D (With more in the works!)

Just got my email with date and ticket info.
I have three people to pay for so I can't swing the VIP ticket prices so I'm waiting for general admission tickets in 30 days.

VIP passes are $250 for Gold and $550 for Platinum. As of now, it looks like there are 663 Gold and 229 Platinum passes left.

https://register.growtix.com/e/silicon_valley_comic_con_2017

I too am going to wait for the regular passes. This year I volunteered which was fun, but very tiring as it took an entire day. There were a lot of cool looking panels I wish I could have attended though -- I think I’ll just buy admission next year as this con is worth it.

Wonder if there is a typo there since the Tech Museum doesn't have a South Hall, but the Convention Center does, the separate quonset like thing just behind the Center. I would love it if they would partner up with the Tech Museum, especially since it has the IMAX and is right across the street. There's also that large area underneath that they use for special exhibits.

I am wondering if the 2 theaters will be used for panels as these are stage theaters usually used for performances.

Got our VIP tickets. They saved our butts this year, letting us into any panel we wanted. Totally worth it. Buy them before they sell out.

Hotel bookings at discounted rates are now available on the svcc website. For some reason, you can't book the Hilton, but the Marriott is available for less than half the price of booking directly through their site.

I've been checking it for the last two weeks.  Started out with only the Westin, then added the Marriott and then a few days later added the Hyatt.
Hopefully they will add the Hilton in the comings weeks.

If anyone is interested, right now there are still 486 regular VIPs and 204 platinum VIPs available. Regular admission is not yet available.

I keep checking to see if the Hilton opens up rooms for discounted booking on the SVCC site, but nothing so far. However you can now book rooms directly with Hilton. Interestingly they only have king rooms available, or 2 doubles on the executive lounge floor. The regular 2 doubles rooms are not available. I'm wondering if these have been set aside for SVCC?

Hopefully SVCC will add the Hilton discounted rooms soon.

I find the hotel situation odd this year. The Hilton is still not an available hotel at con rates and the Marriott only has rooms for a max of two people per room.
Last year, both hotels had rooms for up to four per room right from the time tickets were available.

I know! I have a 2 person room booked at the Marriott (on the chance that we can make it a 4 person room) and an out of block room at the Hilton for 4. But what I really want is a Hilton room for 4 in block.

Sigh...

I'll be attending this year for the first time.  Can anyone tell me what the cosplay scene was like last year?  I'm an amateur photographer so I'm mostly attending for the awesome cosplayers.

Thanks!

There were definitely cosplayers last year, but it was hit and miss. I didn't see nearly the number of cosplayers I would expect, but there were certainly enough of them that those who wanted to see cosplay were not disappointed. I think given how well this con did last year, there will be more cosplayers this year.

I know they're trying not to do much in the way of movie stuff, but would be cool to get something related to the upcoming Chew film.

Thanks for posting. This a great deal if you know you want to get regular weekend pass, as it's a couple bucks cheaper than a regular badge price AND includes a T-shirt. The offer is valid until Dec. 15.

So next year we should wait for Holiday bundles and t-shirts instead of buying tickets when they go on sale?
Would have liked the option to get a shirt.

I guess it's like Walker Stalker... they usually have sales and discounts, but it's subject to availability. If you're worried the show might sell out, you just buy.

And yeah, I paid full price on a Walker Stalker VIP badge that's now half price. Sigh... but the SVCC VIP badges aren't on sale, so I guess I'm okay there.  :P

Walker Stalker is the same company that puts on the Heroes and Villains FanFest, which released significantly discounted passes on Goldstar/Groupon/etc and coupon codes and even daily comp (+$8 fees) tickets on Goldstar way after tickets went on sale. Due to a complicated chain of events and a lot of luck, we ended up with a net reasonable deal despite initially paying full price for tickets, but I still can not recommend paying full price for anything of theirs.

At least SVCC was not quite that bad (they did have some Goldstar deals but they were a couple bucks off at most). We haven't bought passes yet because from looking at the inventory there is currently no shortage of regular admission (but VIP is down to 336 gold and 126 platinum). It is a shame that they did not make this offer available when tickets go on sale, though. If you already bought regular passes, I wonder if they would let you change it to the offer (or at least give you a T-shirt, which is picked up on site anyway) if you contacted them?

I just checked the hotel system and the Hilton (the one connected to the convention center) is now available! It is $179 per night, while my previous booked-direct AAA-rate reservation was $269.

The Fairmont (the hotel across the street, which has Il Fornaio in it, where we had our meetup last year) is also now in the hotel system, for $239 per night.

The connected Marriott still won't give you a reservation for more than 2 people.

Me too! I had been checking daily, but ever since Thanksgiving I've been insanely busy, and haven't been checking as often. It's been a couple of days, but I checked this afternoon, and voila! Early Christmas present!

This just in (sent to their mailing list):

We’re taking the party outside! SVCC will feature an OUTDOOR FESTIVAL! Open to the public**, SVCC will close off Plaza De Cesar Chavez Park and Market Street. The outdoor space gives us a lot more space to provide the additional amenities and content our fans requested.

What’s in the park??
Food Trucks
Beer Garden & Winery
SVCC Science Fair:
Saturday: “Save the Planet” (earth and health sciences) in honor of Earth Day
Sunday: “Technology of the Future” (robotics, space travel & coding)
Outdoor Stage for speakers, performances, product demos, brand activations, science experiments and more
Movie Screenings Fri & Sat nights
Educational and Interactive Displays from Children’s Discovery Museum, NASA and more.
Canine Cosplay Contest Presented by DogVacay
Water Stations Provided by Essentia Water
Car Cosplay Displays
And More!
** SVCC ticket holders will receive special access to the outdoor festival content: dedicated lines, discounted prices and more.

Reminder: Silicon Valley Comic Con will take place in San Jose the weekend of April 21-23.

-----------------------

Last year SVCC pretty much took over downtown San Jose without even trying. I could see SVCC becoming a convention that gets the entire downtown involved, a la SDCC. So far the other conventions I have been to have not been able to completely pull it off. (Some other conventions have events here and there scattered throughout downtown, but not to the point where walking around downtown is as much part of the experience as being inside the convention center.)

The latest AAA magazine has an article on downtown SJ and had a little blurb about SVCC.

Great to see it expanding into the plaza. Of course I want more, can we get the tech museum (and their IMAX) involved? It's right there  :(

Looking forward to the Canine Cosplay Contest, if I was with it I would have my poodle dressed as Boushh leading me around dressed as Chewbacca.

The San Jose MOMA (my go to secret lunch spot) has some interesting exhibits during the con.

This past weekend at ECCC, some of us started talking about a meetup for Silicon Valley Comic Con. I have tentatively booked a reservation for 12 people at 6:30 pm at Il Fornaio (the same restaurant where we had it last year, across the street from the convention center) on the night of Saturday, April 22. Last year Friday was a 'preview night' so I didn't want to book on that day. Unfortunately, there were no reservations available between 6:30 pm and 8:00 pm. I went with the earlier time on the assumption that there might be a Saturday evening event this year.

Anyhow, if you're tentatively interested in attending the meetup, please post in this thread!

So they have announced a 'Space Ball' for Saturday night, but the prices are pretty high. $150 gets you a basic ticket, and you can double that if you want to go to the VIP Party.

Just over a month to go! Who else is getting excited  ;D

As SVCC mentioned earlier, they are adding the City National Civic, California Theater, and South Hall this year. This is excellent as they need more space and it will help give it more of a campus feel (at least the Civic and Theater will.) The City National Civic is directly across the street from the Convention Center and the California Theater is about 1-2 blocks away in the SOFA District, which is a pretty hip area and could get onboard with SVCC.

I am very interested in seeing what they do with the additional space. Last year, the main panel room had a capacity of 3900 and all the others were a few hundred or less. They really need a couple of mid-sized rooms. The area where VIP was last year is often used for panels at other conventions and would be a good space for a couple of mid-sized rooms. But then they'd have to move the VIPs and they wouldn't be able to have a separate entrance anymore. Still, that would free up space for another few rooms and/or more contiguous exhibition space. They could also put some of the smaller panel rooms downstairs together, but then they'd lose those rooms. The size and location of them were great for relaxing in the evening. There are also a couple of rooms behind the smaller panel rooms which IIRC weren't used last year. These would offer much needed space but they are hidden and there is not enough space to wait in line, and if I were a panelist I don't know how I'd feel about being stuck in an area where nobody looks. These rooms would work well for movie or anime viewings though.

The City National Civic has a capacity of about 2800 and the California Theater about 1100. If they kept the setup from last year and used both of these venues for panels, we'd have two larger rooms and one mid-sized room. Or, if they want to use the City National Civic for the main panels then they could split up last year's main room into a couple of mid-sized rooms, or use it for additional artist/dealer space. But, I think it would make sense to keep the main room where it currently is, in addition to using the two main venues for panels. It seemed to be a good size for last year's crowd and the location worked well, being right across from the exhibit hall and also being down the hallway where people can queue.

The South Hall is the big blue tent behind the Convention Center. It's an eyesore and was only supposed to be temporary. It feels more county fair/flea market than convention center. I've heard they want to tear it down and build a new CC expansion/hotel which would be the best idea ever, but there's a lot of red tape involved. So we're stuck with it for now. That being said, it does offer a lot of space. It would be a good area for registration, but not much else. But if registration is anything like last year, it would only be full part of Saturday and it would sit mostly empty the rest of the time. Still, maybe that's the best use of that space.

Tuesday, March 21 is the shipping deadline for badges! So if you're on the fence and waffling, now is the time to buy!

Also, if anyone is on the fence about a meetup on Saturday night, now is the time to commit!

As you already know, me (and my bro) will be there for the meetup.

But yeah, I too am excited for this year's SVCC. Can't wait to see the panels list. Does anyone remember when they posted that last year?

So Grant Gustin is going to be there! Him and Tom Felton are going to have a panel together on Sunday. Photo-op and autograph also on Sunday. If you get one of the VIP packages, which isn't cheap, you get a guaranteed seat for the panel.

I will not lie, while it is cool Gustin will be there, his asking price is a joke. I know he is taking advantage of his Flash popularity, but good grief. You can get a Mark Hamill auto at this $199 asking price; maybe even cheaper. Sure, the VIP has other things included, but it looks like this is the only way to get his signature.

Btw, this isn't his first con appearance. He has been to SDCC and other cons as well. Sure, he never had his own booth but he has been around. I find it silly they didn't double check that.

I do have a signed Flash poster from WonderCon 2015 that doesn't have him. I will think about it, but I will not do the $449.00 VIP pass!

If you just want to make sure you see Grant Gustin at the panel, the regular VIP is the better option at $250 (versus $450 for Grant). Last year for the BTTF panel, the regular VIPs and the 'single panel VIPs' all got together in the same line and had the same access. And the $250 VIP gets you in first to EVERY panel, not just one of them.

Just saying....

Exactly! And the $450 Grant VIP doesn't even include access to the con itself. Btw, it has been confirmed, if anyone wants his autograph, you must buy the $199 VIP that has it, or the crazy $450.

I'm considering the Star Trek TNG photo op. I saw that Levar Burton has cancelled. I also noticed that Michael Dorn's guest listing is gone and that his name is gone from the photo op. Now added to the photo is Denise Crosby and Robert O'Reilly (Gowron) from the show. Has anyone heard whether Michael Dorn cancelled? Grant Gustin and Michael Felton are great additions BTW. Thanks!

I found that odd too, since the first thing I thought of was seeing him in the SDCC Flash-Arrow-Gotham-Constantine mega panel in 2014. In their newsletter they just sent out, they clarified it to say that it was his first time doing autographs/photo ops. They also just edited the Facebook post also.

I also found this back and forth from Fan Expo Canada: http://www.blastr.com/2016-2-18/grant-gustin-responds-accusations-he-wont-do-cons
Which is kind of a dumb article, but it does contain a tweet from Gustin from 2016 saying "I'm sorry to everyone that goes to the cons that I haven't attended any." Yet this was after his appearance at SDCC in 2014 and 2015. I guess it was just implied that he hasn't attended any where he has had his own booth.

I hadn't heard this before either. It does sound like the TNG reunion is being undermined a bit, but honestly, this kind of thing happens when guests are booked so far out. If having the full cast there for the photo op matters to you, then it may not be for you. Sorry...

I would send them an email. They still have an individual photo op with Michael Dorn being sold on the site, so it's confusing.

Saw that Drew Struzan signings are $50 as well.

I told my wife that Grant Gustin will be there on Sunday now she's all about it, lol.  She's a a Gleek and a Flash Fanatic.

Does anyone know if i purchased a pic the $150 version for Gustin, would that be for just that 1 person, or can 1 more person get in on that?

Good question! At other cons I've been to (ReedPOP) they say up to 4 people can be in the photo for the same price, but you only get one copy of the pic.

Ooh, found this on their FAQ page.

Quote
How many people are allowed to pose in the Photo Op?
You can have up to three other people (for a total of four) in the Photo Op with you unless specifically stated. Infants 1 year and younger do not count towards this total. If you are taking a group photo, you can wait in the VIP line if at least one member of the group has a VIP pass. If you want more than four people in your picture, you must purchase a second Photo Op.

Bah, I missed this when I bought my pass. (Will still come in handy if I add Sunday.) But good for the SJPL, best public library in the Bay Area in my humble opinion. I wish someone would have let me play in a room filled with a bunch of cardboard boxes when I was little. The Cosplay Repair area is a great idea too.

They just opened up ticket purchases for the 'premier panel' of the TNG reunion, moderated by William Shatner. This is similar to the BTTF panel last year. Tickets are $10, or $40 if you want VIP seating. Supposedly people who have VIP badges to the con will have 'special benefits', which I'm guessing means that you can get into the VIP seating while paying the GA price.

VIP Platium pass gets you inside the TNG panel with reserved seating. VIP Gold does not do that; you can line up 1 hour sooner, but you have to buy a ticket if you want the extra stuff, according to today's email about the panel.

Somewhat annoyed at the circumstances of this. They advertised the TNG reunion as the main event of SVCC, but they're holding this as a separately ticketed event at the same time as SVCC that you do NOT need a wristband for -- but you still need to buy a ticket even if you have a wristband (except for Platinum VIPs.) This undermines paying for admission to SVCC, if that makes any sense.

OTOH the Back to the Future scenario last year didn't bother me nearly as much, since it was limited to wristband holders to begin with.

What it looked like to me with the gold VIPs (which is what we have) was that you could use the VIP line to get in, bt you wouldn't be allowed into the VIP seating inside unless you got a Captain's CHair ticket.

Thinking the same but it has this in the email for Gold: "Your VIP pass package does NOT include access to this panel." So I don't know what they are pointing to. I too have Gold VIP and this email is not great regarding this.

Edit: I think Hikanteki has it right. I agree with that. Again, today's email wasn't so great answering this clearly. Oh well, what can we do about it?

This was just moved to Saturday morning at 10:30 AM due to guest conflicts. Kind of a strange time slot for the feature event, but I actually prefer the new time since this leaves Friday open to just walk around and check things out.

Also, it looks like there's only one "Captain's Chair" ticket left for this event! (There are still plenty of regular $10 tickets.)

It appears the photos/autographs are being moved from the main hall to last year's main panel room. The rooms on the Marriott side of the convention center are going to be more panel rooms, 212 A-D and 211 A-D, instead of being blocked off for the VIP entrance like last year. VIP instead is being moved to the lower level. Panel room 230 A-C is on the other side of the convention center, where volunteer HQ was last year. It also looks like there will be a Panel room in the main hall (210). Last year all the panel rooms (except the main one) were on the lower level behind registration. This year, there's only room 21 A-B.

Registration is indeed being moved to the South Hall (blue tent) with the Gaming Zone taking the place of last year's registration area, and the Citi National Civic is going to be used for panels (presumably the main ones.)

Overall, it looks like there are the same number of panel rooms as last year, but the non-main panel rooms will be much bigger. The main one will be about the same size. Also, with the photos/autographs moved across the way, the main hall will be bigger and better.

There are also two additional panel rooms I missed in the last post, 111 and 114 (on either side of Press.) Both of these are very small.

Some panels of interest that have been announced on twitter:

Star Trek Continues (Web series)
The Idiot's Lantern (Comedy show)
Extinct (BYUtv original series)

I called the Hilton yesterday to get the hotel confirmation number for my reservation placed through SVCC and they had no record of it.
SVCC had said after April 5th to contact the hotel direct for any issues. I emailed SVCC but they indicated that they would respond in 3-4 days so I'm waiting to hear if they just haven't sent the info to the hotels yet or if I have a problem.
Has anyone else gotten confirmation from the hotels of their reservation?

This convention seems to have a number of ties to Salt Lake Comic Con/Utah. I've noticed:

EDIT: Oh, here's why. Steve Wozniak has apparently worked in Utah since 2009, first at Fusion-io, then Primary Data. He met Trip Hunter at Fusion-io, who is now officially the CEO of SVCC and based in Utah. And Utah has lots of money.

http://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/print-edition/2016/03/11/silicon-valley-comic-cons-trip-hunter-how-to-bring.html (Free registration required to view full article)

EDIT 2: This line jumped out at me:

"We couldn't find a weekend at the San Jose Convention Center, so the only way we could kind of get in there was to purchase a comic book show called Big Wow ComicFest. We purchased Big Wow in June, and then that was kind of the nucleus that we have built this event around."

I've been saying all this time regarding WonderCon leaving SF and yet publicly telling us how much they wanted to stay there -- that if they really wanted to stay that badly, they would have made it happen. And this is a perfect example: SVCC wanted to be in San Jose that badly, so despite not finding dates at first...they bought out Big Wow in order to make it happen.

I was wondering if anyone else is having problems receiving their wristbands?  I ordered two VIP wristbands and only rec'd one.  I've followed up with both Growtix and SVCC a few times and after the first response of "We'll get in the mail," I haven't heard anything from them nor have I gotten my other wristband.  Does anyone know if this is a problem that they're having with a lot of multi-ticket purchases?

Thanks!

I ordered 2 VIP wristbands at once and got 2 (in the same baggie). I suspect the system thinks yours were delivered because you got your delivery. I'd keep pressing them about it. Worst comes to worst, bring your receipt and the one wristband to ticket pickup when the con starts.

Just announced on Facebook:

Just in case there weren't already enough reasons to come to #SVCC, here are 6 more!! We're elated to announce a bundle of new celebrities coming to the con next week 👇
🖖 Star Trek actresses Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) & Chase Masterson (Leeta)
💫 Sam Jones of Flash Gordon and Stargate SG-1 fame
👽 Gigi Edgley known for kickn' butt as Chiana from Farscape and X from Hashtag
😱 Real life zombie killer Jeryl Prescott aka Jacqui from The Walking Dead and Cherry from Ray Donovan
All of whom will be offering autographs!
And no con is complete without some Kung Fu! That's why we've brought in martial artists Ernie Reyes Jr. from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II and The Last Dragon who will be doing a 'movie Kung Fu performance and lesson' for y'all in the park! Cowabunga!!

You're thinking of the right one! They have information on that here: http://svcomiccon.com/press/2017/silicon-valley-comic-con-2017-adds-public-outdoor-festival/

Also some of the outdoor festival events are listed on the panel schedule (with the venue Plaza de Cesar Chavez), such as March for Science Rally, Komedio Standup Comedy Showcase, and Simpsons Trivia!

These are on Goldstar now, but single day tickets are the same price, and actually higher with service fees. LOL: https://www.goldstar.com/events/san-jose-ca/silicon-valley-comic-con-tickets

The multi-day pass has a small discount at $80 (regularly $99), but you're still better off buying from the regular site with the San Jose Public Library discount code (SJPL20) since service fees are lower.

Also, there will be a Drink & Draw SVCC Pre-Party at Illusive Comics in Santa Clara on Thursday night! More details at: https://www.facebook.com/events/1881118155476601/

That's funny about Goldstar!

Just saw that Carrie Fisher's dog Gary will be there :)

"Carrie Fisher's beloved French Bulldog won the hearts and minds of everyone who witnessed their mutual devotion. An emotional support dog, the black-and-white pup with a floppy tongue accompanied her nearly everywhere, including many premieres, talk shows, red carpets and even the White House Correspondents Dinner. Gary will do photo ops, with the proceeds going to Gary’s care. "

Well, if it goes to his care, I would consider it, mostly for that reason. He is a therapy dog too.

Yep! This is probably the only photo op I'll pay for :)

Looks like a good set of panels, I do wish they had more details for some of them. I'm assuming that some of the comics related ones will feature some of the artists listed as guests but it would be nice to have descriptions for all the panels.

I'm excited about the panels! IMHO this is a far better lineup than they had at WonderCon. Between the 'big name' panels and the science panels, I have a lot to do! There are even overlapping panels causing me to make hard choices. And I'm eager to see what they do with the expanded exhibit floor and the outdoor space.

If anyone is a Godzilla fan, "Lenzations" is a great choice for a commission, does great pencil drawings. Be ready though, if you ask for Godzilla he may ask what movie or what year. (I don;t know him personally but have purchased from him in the past.)

General article about tech conventions moving from SF to SJ, mentions SVCC. The facebook dev conference in going on there now, Apple's developer conference later this year, plus WorldCon next summer. Not too bad for SJ.

Most of the photo ops and some more panels have been added to the schedule. They have also moved some of the times around, so please double check that you don't miss anything. In particular, the Sesame Street panel on Sunday moved from 2:30 to 11:30. But now it overlaps with the Linguistics of Arrival, which is disappointing.

Friday I'm interested in the Dramaworld panel, although they finally put the description up and the only panelists listed are 2 marketing people. That's kind of disappointing as I was hoping there would be either actors or people actually involved in production. But maybe some others will show up. I attended Trailer Park last year and it was extremely boring. It's the same group that's putting it on this year, so that one is a skip.

There are a few movie screenings...Armageddon, Better off Dead, and Contact. No hints as to whether anyone involved in the movies will show up, although John Cusack is in Better off Dead.

Saturday there used to be an Extinct panel at 4, but it's not listed anymore. Most of the people in it are still going to appear at 5 in The Future of Humanity in Entertainment. Also, according to the BYUtv site they are screening the premiere Friday night at 8 in the park although it's not yet listed on the schedule.

On Sunday, I recognize Oddball Comics from Big Wow. Looks like a Tony and Kari Mythbusters panel was added or maybe it also changed times.

8i will screen “Buzz Aldrin: Cycling Pathways to Mars” for SVCC attendees throughout the weekend at Booth #1337 in Exhibit Hall 2. Cycling Pathways is the first legacy VR project featuring the celebrated astronaut’s hologram as he takes viewers on a journey through space and reveals his plan to send humans to Mars. It’s a groundbreaking educational room-scale VR experience with stunning visual effects and the first room-scale VR experience featuring a real human!
SVCC attendees can also “meet” a photorealistic 3D hologram of Buzz Aldrin a.k.a. #HoloBuzz and take a photo or video with the celebrated astronaut. The #HoloBuzz showcase introduces people to 8i’s Holo, a consumer mobile app that lets users mix hologram characters into the real world using a smartphone as well as create fun videos and photos to share with friends. Holo launches later this year.

Heads up, growtix might not be secured. Why I'm thinking this? Last Sunday, I decided to buy the Flash pass. Next day later, I had a weird charge show up and another trying to go through. I fixed it but get this, my brother bought a autograph ticket last night and today, his card had several Netflix charges on it.

So don't use Growtix; I think their system is not secured. If you bought from this site recently, check your card.

Hope so too, also since I was able to get the Gary Fisher photo op this morning.

Also got this email, which is weird since I do not have a VIP pass

If their system is bad, it has to be recent. I, too, used them before, just find it funny what happened to his card, pretty much the same thing was happening--how quickly it started and what time the charges got started. I got a new card, just my bro is minus one on this trip. He has another just stinks this happened.

Just keep checking your cc today then. if it happens to you, then we know it is their system.

Thanks for organizing the dinner! Was great to you all. Mario also unwittingly provided the idea for the next fantasy football writeup.

I have two apologies to make. 1. I never sang, (this might not be that bad of a thing.) 2. I had 10 astronaut ice cream sandwiches in my backpack the whole time and forgot completely about it until I got back to my car.  :(

Astronaut ice cream keeps forever. You will just have to bring them to San Diego!

No comment on the singing (or lack thereof). ;)

This was my second time going to SVCC. This year I brought my wife and 4yr old daughter. They had a blast. It was great to see so many artists booths there vs the usual high volume of vendors selling chachkies, not that I don't like chachkies it was just really nice to see something different on top of the science and tech booths/panels. I'm still in owe at how much bigger it has gotten since year one. Am I the only one who felt like SV is well on its way to catching up to WC in size and attendance?

I agree.  I think SVCC is on it's way to being a major league comic con/event.  With such a big leap forward in just it's second year I'm really looking forward to next year!

Since it is growing, I'm curious to see if at some point they move convention centers, like moving to SF and having it in Moscone instead. Bigger space and they can still do outdoor activities in Yerba Buena.

1. SVCC was already the same size attendance-wise as WonderCon last year if the published estimates are accurate (60,000)

2. To me it actually didn't feel like attendance at SVCC was bigger this year than last year -- it was just more spread out, and better organized

Agree with [member=354]hikanteki[/member] , plus with San Jose doing a big push to get more conventions plus the presence of Woz and all of the focus on making it "Silicon Valley" I would be extremely surprised if it went to SF. (I'd still attend of course.)

I didn't do any panels, but I did hear that many were full. The exhibit hall was not that crowded.

I'd still attend if they moved to SF too, but SVCC should not consider moving it up there UNLESS/until SF first actively goes after and gets back the one they let slip.

I don't think it will move to SF. Besides, SF had WonderCon and let it go. They aren't interested in comic cons that are for locals who don't stay in hotels. And Woz wants Silicon Valley. IMHO the founders of this con want it to stay in San Jose, just like CCI wants SDCC to stay in San Diego.

I was saying to my family on Saturday that this is now my second favorite con (after SDCC). And it comes without all of the SDCC hassles! No major lines, no overnights, no issues with buying badges or booking hotels... love it! And the VIP is awesome! We will be going next year again for sure!

Are there issues? Yes. But they are small in the grand scheme of things, and the program director was well aware of some of them (and informed of others at Talkback). Those issues will be fixed next year. Given how they fixed last year's problems, I have faith in his promises.

Good analysis from the Mercury Times. I agree with pretty much everything:

And here's another review:

http://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/In-2nd-year-Silicon-Valley-Comic-Con-is-science-11092904.php

Quote
Silicon Valley Comic Con CEO Trip Hunter said Sunday that while the numbers were incomplete for this weekend, he thought they would be as strong as or stronger than 2016, when more than 60,000 attended.

Hunter reiterated that no matter how popular the convention gets, it won’t ever move to San Francisco or Los Angeles, like the last big Bay Area convention, WonderCon, did a few years ago.

“We’re not moving. That’s Woz’s directive,” Hunter said of the Silicon Valley resident, who has taught fifth-grade computer classes in local schools. “He just doesn’t have interest in doing this somewhere else.”

So I must say, this year was really good. Sure, I had VIP; however, this con was done really well. The panel lineup was great and having certain ones over at the City National Civic was perfect. Now there are some minor things that need attention, but those issues are so small. They should be able to fix those--just look at Year 2. They did a lot to make the con even better so fast. Therefore, can't wait to see what next year brings! Oh yes, I'm going back and likewise for my brother. We had so much fun and it was relaxing, too. Btw, I really liked both NASA booths--the store and their other one. For example, I was able to talk to a NASA pilot about SOFIA. It was cool!

Also, it should stay where it's at. Unless space becomes an issue in the future, its current location is fine. Not so crazy about SF; SJ is better in my book.

Finally, call me crazy if you want, but SVCC '17 > WonderCon '17. I still think WC had the better show floor, but SVCC had better things overall, that made it awesome. Again, so many panels to pick from I couldn't believe it. I also had fun meeting certain guests as well. Having the VIP badge helps, too, hehe!

I agree with Mario, this was a much better con for me than WonderCon this year. The variety and quality of panels are number one for me at any con, and SVCC had that in spades. Tech and science panels, celeb and entertainment panels, and so many that I had to make hard choices as to where I wanted to be. I certainly didn't have that at WonderCon this year!

The exhibit floor wasn't as big as WonderCon, but I thought it was just as good, if not better. In place of Dark Horse, there was NASA and SETI. WB actually gave away proper swah to nearly every attendee. The Buzz Aldrin VR experience and (hearsay... I never got the chance to do it) the Acura experience were a lot of fun. In the park, the Playstation and Facebook VR demos were well received, with long lines. There were no 'experience' booths at WC this year other than Comic Con HQ, and certainly no offsites like SVCC had at the park.

There were a few small issues, but everyone at the Talkback panel was very complimentary (even as they made their complaints) and said that the con was significantly improved from last year. The few complaints people had were relatively small, and things that the program director promised to fix for 218. IMHO, this con is a contender. Next year will really be the turning point for this con, and it may easily become a 'destination event' by the end of the decade.

Some quick notes. More good than bad, and I was happy at the improvements over last year. Might even go VIP next year?

Good stuff

Unique things. Sesame Street cast, Buzz Aldrin, Adam West & Burt Ward, Drew Struzan.

I like the integration with the city of San Jose. Information booths, "city concierges," participation of the public library and San Jose State.

More artists, more comic vendors, collectibles, etc. compared to last year. Lots of movie props.

Moving the security/badge checkpoints outside. You were (mostly) free to move around inside, and there weren't the bottlenecks of last year.

Better use of convention center space. Floor layout was good and even had some places to relax.

More sponsorships this year but they were not too intrusive.

So much NASA, and really friendly people at their booths.

Still not overly crowded. Short lines (in exhibit hall) and was easy to talk to people.

Lots of large "Cosplay is not Consent" notices. There were clear details on what behavior won't be tolerated and also clear details on what was allowed and not allowed with costumes. (I had never even heard of a "dance belt.") There was even a Negan clause stating that no wooden or aluminum Bats were permitted.

The Earth day timing was nice, although I got snagged up in traffic from the parade.

People haven't discovered my super secret lunch spot.
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Large gaming area with (local?) bands. Quirky :) I completely geeked out the the Q*bert game still has the thing that thumps inside the case when you fall off the pyramid.

Things they could improve on

I would have done more days and scheduled in more panels if I had known details in advance. Some details, like guests and panel presenters were not filled in until the last minute. For example there was what looked like a really strong panel with Bronze age creators like Ron Wilson, but the description of who would be at the panel was not filled in until the day of the panel.

Add a schedule to the paper program.

Give badge incentives at the beginning of the sale, I know some people who bought early and were upset that they missed a discount or a free shirt later on.

Some things were tucked away in corners, make them easier to find with signs and a better map in the program.

Give artists better floor location. I would have liked to see them more in the center of the floor, rather than along the wall.

Have a consistent "weapons" policy. I saw some people turned away from the plaza for having fake weapons as part of their costume. Security is important of course and this may be unavoidable but people were frustrated that a costume that was fine in the convention center was not permitted in the plaza.

Would like to see some CBLDF and Heroes Initiative presence.

Last year I volunteered one day (which let me attend the other days for free), but after seeing how great SVCC was, I decided it was worth full price and paid for a weekend pass this year.

It did not disappoint. Just when we were already looking forward to what we thought was the complete guest lineup, they announced additional guests closer and closer to the show...and again...and again. Production value was high. The SVCC banner across the convention center made everyone know that this was the event they came for. Once again, the exhibit hall was carpeted. The panel rooms were professional looking, with blue lighting and a setup with the SVCC logo on a black background.

The new layout was all kinds of awesome, and fixed the most glaring issues from last year. The smaller rooms had more space than last year, and the use of the City National Civic was genius. I really hope they use the Civic every year. People lined up for the main room outside rather than take up space inside the convention center. In addition to the seats set up in front of the stage, there's permanent side and balcony seating with comfy tiered seats (similar to the arena in Anaheim). It was also a good decision to move Registration to the South Hall, which is in general a big and useless building but perfect for picking up your registration band and not much else. They also allowed pickup on Thursday and earlier hours on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. As they mailed our badges we didn't have to go, but I did not hear of the registration problems of last year.

Moving the tag in station to the front doors and side doors rather than upstairs was another good decision. This allowed them to use the long hallway space on the first floor (which is a waste of space almost all of the time for other conventions) for convention activities, such as the Kids STEAM Lab. There were also artists set up on the first floor.

Panels are my favorite part of any show and this convention had among the best. There was no shortage of featured guest panels as well as interesting smaller panels. In the main hall, I attended Star Trek, Breaking Barriers with Pam Grier and Erica Baker (Nichelle Nichols was added at the last minute, then cancelled at the even more last minute due to transportation issues), Buzz Aldrin, Grant Gustin/Tom Felton, and Sesame Street. All fantastic. None of them were completely full, although I estimate that Star Trek, Buzz, and Grant were about 80-90% full. I was actually surprised (and disappointed) that Sesame Street didn't get a bigger turnout...here were five of the original cast members looking at about a 20-30% full auditorium. :-\ My favorite smaller panel was "Marvel versus DC: Who is the most powerful superhero?," where they featured two scientists who were consultants for actual movies and TV shows (i.e. Ant-Man) and a writer from The Flash. I also saw "The Future of Humanity in Entertainment," screenings of "Star Trek Continues" where they showed episode 8 with many of the cast members, "Dramaworld" with a discussion from the marketing team and "Better off Dead" with a discussion from nobody. The real strength of the panels at SVCC to bring renowned people from different shows/careers/fandoms to get their perspectives on a common topic.

There were no long lines, and we were able to get into every panel we wanted to when arriving right on time (or even a few minutes late.) I did not have VIP but had no trouble getting into anything. They also clarified their policy to not clear rooms before panels unless they are Premier Panels (i.e. ones where they charge extra.) This year it was was a moot point, as the only Premier Panel (Star Trek) was the very first one on Saturday.

The free festival in Cesar Chavez Park was also great and very convenient. Having the Food Trucks was as good of an idea as using the City National Civic. They also had a stage with live performances and SVCC Merch and Vendor booths set up.

The Video Game area (where registration was last year) was a lot of fun and kept on going Saturday after everything else shut down. It was a much better use of space than registration in my opinion. There were also a couple video game-rock performances by bands such as Super Soul Bros.

The Exhibition Hall had a lot of interesting booths. Right in front we were greeted with the Acura VR experience. I ended up being one of the last people to get in line Sunday before they cut it off. The wait wasn't too bad, only about an hour but it was a lot of fun! NASA had a big display and SETI was there. The Warner Bros/Allied Integrated Marketing returned and gave out swag that was easy to get (I ended up with a poster and an Everything Everything bandana). Other swag I got included a cell phone stand from Joby, and a frisbee from Kika Keyboard. I also ended up buying a Uamou from an indie toy vendor which are rather difficult to find. The biggest vendor was probably Bluefin/Bandai, and Fugitive Toys and Animetasia were also there with good selections of hard to find Funko Pops. There were more comic vendors than last year though still not too many. However, I felt the layout was a little sparse. Many of the companies that booked big spaces near the entrance didn't use the entire space, so at times the hall felt a little deserted. This was most noticeable on Friday when attendance was the lowest. (On Saturday it was much better.) There were only about 15 rows of exhibitors, and most of the rows were not even that deep. The exhibit hall used more space than last year, but it didn't feel like there was more going on. They could have easily put 1.5x as many rows. There were also a couple of random scattered venues outside the exhibit hall (i.e. Fez hats) and it did not seem like there was any rhyme or reason as to why they were placed outside.

This leads me to my next observation: with all the extra space, the convention didn't feel as bustling as last year. From my estimation, attendance was similar as last year but more spread out. There is also no way to tell who attended the free festival but not the convention, although I guess that doesn't really matter. In any case, better too much space than too little like last year. As this is backed by Woz, they certainly have the resources to do whatever they want, and they've also shown that they have the aspiration to be what this area needs. They should not move from San Jose; this city has fully embraced them and has shown a willingness to work with them. They broke the convention center last year, but they found ways to get more space to make things better for attendees as well as include people who don't want to/can't afford to pay full price for a badge. Their current space is fine for next year, but when they need more space again, they will find it. For instance, they can use some of the ballrooms in the Hilton, Marriott, and Fairmont (some of the rooms in the Fairmont are especially sizeable.) They were originally going to use the California Theater, but ended up not needing it. They can revisit the idea again when they need it. Other possibilities for space are the SJ Rep, partnering with some of the businesses on South First to hold events such as Cafe Stritch and the Zero1 Garage, and taking over the Camera 12 building if they haven't done anything by then.

The only issues I can think of are minor. The biggest one was waiting until the last minute to finalize the schedule. The first draft of the schedule was up about 1.5 weeks beforehand (which is in line with other conventions) but most did not have descriptions at that time. The descriptions, as well as additional panels, started to trickle in over the next week. A number of panels were moved from the original time, even some of the big name ones (i.e. Sesame Street, Robert Englund). It's pretty clear the schedule was still a work in progress up until right before the show. This is why they listed descriptions but almost none of times in the program, and instead said "refer to the app." Last minute changes happen at every convention, but it would have been very helpful to have a schedule with times in the official program with a paper insert showing the changes...or if they really can't print the schedule in the programming book, they could at least on print it on a paper insert included in the program book. It's annoying having to look at your phone every time you want to find a panel, not to mention by the end of the day the battery could be low/dead, and WiFi/4G/LTE is not going to be reliable with that many people.

Also, if they offer incentives/lower pricing at all then it needs to be for the early supporters, not the people who come in late in the game. For example, the T-shirt bundle could be offered from the time tickets go on sale all the way through Christmas, rather than just shortly before Christmas. Even though the Goldstar discounts were minor, this event should not appear on Goldstar (or similar sites), period.

Charging extra for the Star Trek panel in itself didn't bother me, but then opening it up to non-convention attendees and charging the exact same price that they were charging attendees did. If they can't get 3000 people who have already paid $100 admission to pay another $10, then they need to not charge extra, rather than open it up to non-attendees.

While I really liked the science focus, it seemed like it came at the expense of some of the types of panels I most appreciated last year, in particular "Tim & Blur Studio's Tips on Winning the Deadpool" and "From Fandom to Figures with Loot Crate". I had no trouble finding interesting panels all weekend, but it seemed like 90% of the non-celebrity panels were required to squeeze in (if not fully be about) science...but this is still a comic con, and there's room for mindless geek-related corporate pop culture entertainment and consumerism alongside panels dissecting the scientific elements of your favorite TV shows and movies. I'd like the Loot Crate panel to come back and be an annual thing actually.

Last year, SVCC hit the ground running. Following the lead of conventions such as Denver and Salt Lake, it showed that comic cons no longer need to start small and take years to "get there". Right off the bat it proved that it was the Bay Area comic convention that everyone who missed WonderCon has been waiting five years for (something that Wizard World, Big Wow, San Francisco Comic Con, Heroes/Villains, and the various anime or single fandom conventions could not pull off) and it showed that some things really are worth the wait. It has been fully embraced by San Jose City Hall, the citizens and organizations of San Jose, and geeks all over the Bay Area, and looks to have a successful future here in San Jose.

And Silicon Valley Comic Con has one additional benefit to me that WonderCon never did -- I can walk back home from the convention. :)

You made some great points, Hikanteki!

Just so people know, if they want to make suggestions for next year, they can email info@svcomiccon to make them. They will read those suggestions and note them. (This was announced at Talkback).

Hikanteki, you and i clearly had different experiences with room clearing. While I didn't see room clearing in the smaller panels (e.g. NASA panels) in the bigger rooms, notably 230, there was definitely room clearing and only the VIP were allowed to remain. So it seems the policy was inconsistent.

Nice write-up and pictures  :)  At the panels, did they have big screens of the panelists behind them? I only see the Silicon Valley logo screen behind them.

They did in the BIG theater (City National Civic) but not the other rooms. They were apparently supposed to have them in 230 (the second biggest room) but never did. I saw the screens being used for slides in 210 (the 'science panels' room).

Guys I'm so so sorry I missed it and missed catching up with my fellow Bay Area FoCC members. I totally wanted to be there but honestly life has been overwhelming and I actually forgot! Mario and TJ you guys were supposed to remind me!! Would've loved to see you guys but sound like you had a ton of fun. Next year I promise!!
It's all good--we understand. As TJ said, I thought the same thing as well. Next time and hey, we have Comic-Con coming up, so we can catch up during that time.

SAN JOSE — April 27, 2017 — Silicon Valley Comic Con (SVCC), Steve Wozniak’s wildly successful pop culture and technology expo, took over downtown San Jose the weekend of April 21-23, welcoming more than 65,000 guests over the course of the three-day show. This year’s theme of “The Future of Humanity: Where Will We Be in 2075?” featured a Space Village, NASA space exploration panels, robotics, virtual reality, a Kids S.T.E.A.M. Lab, celebrity appearances, leading comic book artists and authors, cosplay contests, a science fair, Geek Fashion Show, Rover.com dog cosplay contest, transportation provided by Acura’s NSX supercar and more. SVCC 2.0 also saw massive physical expansions and layout changes, adding a free public outdoor festival, programming at City National Civic and hosting registration inside South Hall. Silicon Valley Comic Con will return to San Jose the weekend of April 6-8, 2018.

My photo album for SVCC is up.  I was there all three days so there are still yet more photos to process.  It was a great con.  It was a great kid-friendly con with a lot of stuff to do.  Definitely going back next year!
