Please post news regarding the upcoming Wondercon 2014 here. Thanks!
-
West Coast Avengers, good call Chris.
-
We need dates! We need a location!
Well heck, I guess we just need everything...
-
It probably won't be April of 2015.

It probably won't be April of 2015.
If it stays in Anaheim, GREAT! If not, then Emerald City might be my new Spring Con.
-
I know it's not CCI, but the D23 program has alot of good info, public transportation and business hours, if we are lucky enough to get WC again in 2014.

I'm biased toward Anaheim for Wondercon myself. If it moves back to San Francisco, I might consider flying over there. I hear the food up there is spendid.
-
I hope it stays in Anaheim but if it doesn't I'm ok with that. It's just more money I can save for stuff I want to buy at Comic Con. :)
-
Hopefully since CCI branded it Wondercon Anaheim, it will stay here.
-
Looked at the calendars for both Moscone and Anaheim. If I'm reading it right, Moscone is busy just about every weekend in March/April while Anaheim has a lot of free dates. Take that for whatever it's worth...

SF and Anaheim >:D

Or turn Ape into a northern California version of West Coast Avengers.

Or turn Ape into a northern California version of West Coast Avengers.
This has been suggested before, but APE and WonderCon are not the same at all. APE is *Alternative* Press Expo. Small, independent publishers of comics and graphic novels. No big names, no Hollywood, not even Marvel/DC/Dark Horse/IDW. Turning APE into WonderCon means that APE goes away altogether. The people who attend APE want the antithesis of what SDCC has become, whereas the people who attend WonderCON want another SDCC.
-
Yes they are different, but we all could see CCI changing it.
-
Why rebrand it? Wondercon is already popular.
-
It went from WonderCon to WonderCon Anaheim this year.

Not really. Most of the SF bookings listed are on weekdays. As of today, Moscone's calendar for Fri-Sun in March and April 2014 looks like:
3/7-3/9: Free
3/14-3/16: Free
3/21-3/23: Free
3/28-3/30: North booked 3/28 and 3/29 for MacWorld (WonderCon typically only uses South, but I doubt they'd have it the same weekend as MacWorld)
4/4-4/6: North booked 4/4-4/5 for Rock & Roll Marathon, North & South 4/5-4/6 for Surgeon Conference
4/11-4/13: Free
4/18-4/20: Free
4/25-4/27: West booked on 4/25 for Materials Research, North booked on 4/26-4/27 for Plastic Surgery conference. South not booked yet.
The last couple of years, WonderCon only used the South Hall. Both SF and Anaheim are big enough to usually have multiple conventions going on at the same time.

I agree that they're not the same, but I think they could find a way to incorporate the independent publishers into a bigger convention like WonderCon. A convention with an attendance of about 50,000 won't work with only APE material, but it could still have a strong focus on APE material like 30-40%.
APE states that 2013 will be their last year at the Concourse Exhibition Hall since it is scheduled to be demolished, but that APE is definitely returning to SF in 2014. That, and with the talk about WonderCon returning to SF with fall dates, makes me believe that they could be planning to merge the two and that this has been in the works for some time.
-
It probably won't be April of 2015.
If Easter is the motif, WC 2014 will be weekend ending April 20th. For WC 2015, weekend of April 5th, a good week before CVII.
-
Hope they wont keep it on Easter Weekend. Not alot of people were happy about it falling on Easter Sunday this year.

I have heard talks about it returning to SF, even talks about them possible splitting the event into two slightt smaller WonderCon's, one in the spring in Anaheim and one in the fall in SF. At the end of the day though, it's all talk and speculation on the part of fans and such. CCI isn't giving anything away at this point.
However, the only slightly official information we have got about WonderCon seems to point to it returning to Anaheim in 2014. I posted this a while back in the WonderCon 2013 thread, so I'm just copying and pasting it:
" I found an interesting article from the San Diego UT newspaper. The article was posted July 17th 2013, a few weeks ago, and is about SDCC and the rent price decrease that the convention got for the next few years, but the writer also mentions Wondercon. In it he interviewed Jay Burruess, new head of the Orange County Vistor and Convention Bureau and claims that Wondercon is returning to Anaheim again next year. While I wouldn't take that as an offical announcement, I think it's interesting and could be a little telling. But anything can happen and Ill wait for an offical statement from CCI.
You can take a look at the article here: http://utsandiego.com/news/2013/jul/18/tp-comic-cons-big-break/ (http://utsandiego.com/news/2013/jul/18/tp-comic-cons-big-break/) "
While I know there are a lot of fans up in SF that are desperate for WonderCon to return there, it seems that for either better or worse, it could stay in Anaheim. It makes sense for CCI when you think about it. There has seemed to he an increase in Hollywood presence at WonderCon over its many years, and being in Anaheim gives filmmakers and TV producers easier access to the convention and more incentive to be involved.

No, it's not just fans that have said that. While it's true nothing official has been set Glanzer said it himself that CCI was looking at splitting it into two cons: http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/comics/article/53799-wondercon-returns-to-anaheim-in-2013-but-could-go-back-to-the-bay-area-too.html (I also heard from a couple people that the WonderCon program book said something to that effect too, although I haven't been able to get a copy of it so I can't say for sure.)
Although by this point I take what Glanzer says with a grain of salt until I see it.

Yes, this is one of the reasons why I suspect they moved...there's more to it than the construction. I doubt they would have promoted it as "WonderCon Anaheim" if they really thought the move was just temporary.

Well, that article was mostly talking about possibilities for the 2013 Con and were all things that ended up not happening, though it could have some baring on the 2014 Con. With the Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau claiming that WonderCon is returning to Anaheim in 2014, it makes one wonder what exactly CCI has up their sleeve. The WonderCon website still says "location to be announced" on the vendor application page.
I personally think it makes sense at this point, with the Con having been away from SF for so long and making a name for itself in Anaheim the way it has been, that if they decide to start up a new Con, that it would be better to leave WonderCon in Anaheim and start a new Con, or even split it into two Cons, in SF under a new title.
-
My money is on them revamping APE to make it more like WonderCon. That way the north and south each will have a con with the main event being SDCC. This time the South will win!
-
Yeah, with APE moving locations for next year, I could see them expanding it to be a larger Convention in vain of WonderCon. I would have only two things to say about that though:
1. Don't lose the APE aspect of it! I think they should still set aside at least 35%, if not more depending on the new locations size compared the room they had at Concourse, of Exhibit Hall exclusively for independent and self publishers. Doing this could actually help those independent publishers. APE bring in about 5-6 thousand attendees every year. By expanding the Con around them, they expand the "audience" of people who attend and boost overall attendance close to WonderCon numbers in the tens of thousands. They would have the opportunity to present their work to guests who would have skipped APE all together.
2. Don't brand it WonderCon and rebrand WonderCon in Anaheim. I have two reasons for this. Firstly, if they do go the route of expanding APE, the convention would be a new animal all together, a hybrid of sorts, and branding it WonderCon I think would do a disservice to the APE roots. It would almost be a whole new con. Give it a new name it can grow by on its own merits, not on the tails on WonderCon. Secondly, WonderCon itself has already made a name for itself in Anaheim and has been picking up Hollywood support. Up and rebranding it could cause apprehension on the part of Hollywood studios who would be willing to back WonderCon because of the recognition the name carries, but possibly would be more hesitant of giving support to the Con, especially when they don't know how the rebranding will effect attendance numbers and how people view the Con. Of course that apprehension could be lessened because of CCI being behind it, but it's still a gamble.
-
It's a VERY safe bet that Wondercon is staying in Anaheim and that they are gearing up for Wondercon SF, but a scaled down version as soon as next year.
And regarding SDCC, it's staying in SD. When you hear these stories about Vegas or other locations, don't get caught up in the feeding frenzy. It's just not going to happen for sooooo many reasons.
-
I agree about the A.P.E/WC possibility, Yzrfan.
Do you get an uneasy feeling that WC Anaheim, in light of the ongoing pattern of possible 2015 Disney D23 and SWCelebrations, seem inviting as an easy sell for Disney's growing convention pattern? Reed Pop does multiple cons, which right now include Celebrations, but only WC seems on par with a more mature D23-Hollywood. Plus, didn't CCI hedge out/capitalize on Wizard World's groundwork in Anaheim?
I think CCI really does want to go back to the North, but not to have three Cons.

I agree with all of the above.

These same arguments could be used in favor of calling the Anaheim con something other than WonderCon, IMO. WonderCon was in SF for 10 years and Oakland for 15 before that, so it could be argued that calling the con in Anaheim "WonderCon" does a disservice to its Bay Area roots, and that the con in Anaheim should have grown by its own merits rather than take the name of something that was already around for 25 years. (For the record, I don't really have a problem with either of them being called WonderCon, but it makes no sense to say that a CCI convention in SF is going to be riding on the tails of WonderCon.)
WonderCon had made a name for itself and had Hollywood support when it was in SF, primarily because of CCI being behind it. In 2011 the attendance by CCI's own estimates was at 49,000+. As long as it's somewhere where the studios are willing to travel, I doubt attendance would be hurt.
-
During the Talkback Panel, one of the attendees thanked CCI for bringing WonderCon back to SF for 2014. John (the CCI rep) did not comment or confirm one way or the other. The attendee made his comment, some folks applauded and then he walked back to his seat so I don't know if he was stating something fact that wasn't announced yet or if he was asking a question in the form of a statement?
-
Anaheim won't be getting burned out on Cons. D23 and Star Wars Celebrations are every couple years. Who knows this might be D23's last time in CA. We are getting Star Wars Celebration in 2015, so D23 will probably be in Florida that year. WCA will be staying.

There is a difference though. While yes, WonderCon did move to Anaheim, it is essentially the same Con, just different location. I was talking though about the possibility of APE expanding and becoming a larger Con. APE isn't WonderCon. It's a different type of Con all together. I just don't think it's right to expand APE into a larger Con and then name it WonderCon to draw in on the name recognition. The WonderCon convention holds in its name certain expectations from its guests, many of whom don't attend APE. I would worry that by making APE larger, and branding it WonderCon, that we would see the APE aspect of the Con slowly be cannablized and taken over by the larger vendors and Exhibits that guests expect from WonderCon, basically ending APE as we know it. That's why if the decide to go that route I'd perfer to see them rebrand it as something new and different. By doing that, they get to set the tone of how they want to Con to start off as and build expectations, not try to live up to expectations already existing to another brand name thus possibly forcing out the APE aspect.
Now I have no problem with them moving WonderCon back to SF (though I do admit I like it being close to me when it's in Anaheim) and I'd even be on board for them splitting it into two WonderCon's, one in Anaheim and one in SF, as long as APE was left alone and not absorbed into WonderCon SF.

What is attendance like? Did some searching and last I can find is somewhere around +50K
-
What is attendance like? Did some searching and last I can find is somewhere around +50K
Yes that is the ballpark.
2009: 34,000
2010: 39,000
2011: 49,500
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WonderCon
I just found a statement by Glanzer saying that 2012 had just shy of 40,000 people: http://herocomplex.latimes.com/movies/wondercon-2013-your-guide-to-the-anaheim-comic-convention/#/0
I haven't found anything official for 2013 yet, but this site says 46,000: http://blogs.publishersweekly.com/blogs/PWxyz/2013/06/19/what-are-the-biggest-comic-cons-in-north-america/comment-page-1/#comments
If 2012 was 40,000, then 46,000 would seem correct for 2013. The author implies that they got most of these numbers directly from the horse's mouth, or from an officially published memo. She hasn't answered where exactly she got WonderCon's yet from.

How much is history worth? Tradition? How much do we or CCI value it vs $$. That's really what it comes down to and at the core of this WonderCon Anaheim/San Francisco issue.
Let's establish and make this clear, "Wondercon" IS a San Francisco/Bay Area/NorCal show. Someone already noted the almost quarter century that it has been here. It was born here. It was raised here. There would be no WonderCon Anaheim if not for WonderCon San Francisco! NorCal turned it into something big enough that it could move to Anaheim, use the name and still be successful. So everyone "owes" and needs to be respectful of WonderCon SF. We would not even be having this conversation if not for WonderCon SF!
Next, the show was plenty successful in San Francisco. Check the numbers! Furthermore, qualitatively the attendees, exhibitors and others could vouch and verify the growth and success. We got more and larger Entertainment coming through, bigger vendors, extensive and quality programming, etc.
So what's the problem? Why are we having this debate? Why wouldn't it just be in SF with all that "success?" Anyone care to guess?? There's only one answer. It's always the same ...
$$$$$ Cha - Ching!! Do not be naive and believe it has something to do with renovations and ideal dates. If CCI wanted WonderCon to be in NorCal it could have been. There were enough alternate venues during renovations and enough available dates last year. So I'd bet any amount of money that Moscone Center charges way more than Anaheim Convention Center and Moscone is smaller and probably not as nice as Anaheim CC. San Francisco in general is more expensive for everything from food to hotels to parking ... and there's less of it (hotels/parking).
So let's see ... Bigger Facilility, Nicer Facility, Cost Less, minimal attendance drop, much more ability to grow ... facility and content wise because we are closer and convenient to things like Hollywood and big vendors. Now tell me, from a pure business standpoint, what would you choose? It's a no brainer isn't it? There is not one person on this board or anywhere in their right mind, if they were running this business would not go with Anaheim. So the "only" card SF has is sentiment ... history, tradition ... because pretty much everything else favors Anaheim. Heck, even the weather in March is more favorable typically in SoCal. So I ask, does CCI value history and tradition or like most big entities and business value $$$. Oh and don't fool yourself about this non-profit "philosophy" that's naive.
I'm one that is a traditionalist, appreciates and values history, so I hope WonderCon returns to the Bay Area. The same way, I want Comic Con to stay in San Diego and not Las Vegas or LA, etc. It's where they should be, but I'm not optimistic. There's no reason to be is there? And no, do not throw the Bay Area a bone and do some expanded APE or create a diluted WonderCon SF that is going to look like some small time convention. At that point, I'd rather just do WonderCon Anaheim, have it be of the highest quality and I'll fly or drive down!

For all the people who joined after, or just before SDCC 2013, we went round and round last year on this topic earlier. People want for it to stay and people want for it to leave. It's the nature of the beast. No one will ever be happy. People can call themselves experts because they might have been to a con once or twice or because they have a blog. Lets leave things to rest like they were. And NO people don't need to start talking about SDCC moving either. We have been there done that. Lets just leave it at this, lets see what CCI has planned. Whatever they decide on, someone will always be ass hurt.
-
Agreed. Let's see what happens. That's all we can do. Let's just be sure to appreciate and be respectful of WonderCon San Francisco and it's rich history and tradition. So please kill any APE can be the little scrap we get in NorCal or it be "expanded" ... whatever that means ... and then somehow be happy. I've made the trek the last 2 years to Anaheim and I'll do it again. So a quality show is my priority ... wherever it is.

Then what's the point of having a discussion board? I think a lot of new and/or relevant points have been brought up in this topic.

A small show can't be a quality show? Personally, I have found some of my favorite Cons have been smaller ones. And your telling me that you wouldn't welcome a Con in SF unless its the full WonderCon? That seems a little... Extreme. Writing off a Con that technically doesn't even exist yet, and therefore you know nothing about it.

Your right, not all of us were around when you had your last discussion. Some of the info we have been discussing likewise wasn't around when you last had the discussion. You're right that no solution is going to please everyone, but this is a discussion board were you... You know, discuss things. And one of the biggest things about WonderCon, with different conflicting reports that have sprung up, is where it'll be next year or if it'll even be "one" event. Whether or not you had the discussion before doesn't make the discussion any less relevant now.
And I don't remember anyone claiming to be experts. We are all on the forum because we love Cons. Sure, many of us have been to a few, some more then others. And yes, we might use our experience and knowledge of those Cons to try and help us speculate what might happen in the future, but that doesn't mean we are claiming to be experts. We are just using one more tool, personal experience, to help us in forming opinions.
Then what's the point of having a discussion board? I think a lot of new and/or relevant points have been brought up in this topic.
I agree. That's what forums like these are for, to discuss, speculate, and find some kind of way to obsess over the things we love while we wait for them to come around again! :P
-
:o Other than settling on the GPS coordinates of the next WC2014, did anyone have a seasonal preferance fo WC2014 aka should it be the spring before SDCC, as the ultimate preview night? or after SDCC, when we are just shy of the family Holidays in October?
Mine is Spring, but not Easter.
-
Then what's the point of having a discussion board? I think a lot of new and/or relevant points have been brought up in this topic.
Agreed.
As long as there are no personal attacks, I think this is an interesting discussion to go around and around on. I wouldn't be surprised if in 2-3 years we'll be having a similar discussion if San Diego still hasn't expanded the convention center and CCI drags their feet on any type of contract extension.
It'd just be nice if CCI would officially announce something so that the speculation can stop and the planning can begin. They've GOT to know where they'll be holding the show but are waiting on the announcement for some reason. I can't imagine they haven't planned that far out yet.
-
I agree that CCI has more information than they're letting on. If I were to speculate, it would be that they have Spring Anaheim dates again, but are still jockeying for San Francisco dates. Just a guess though.
As for dates, I too prefer the Spring. And I liked Easter weekend, not because it was Easter, but because it was easy to take the kids out of school (since they were on Spring Break). For this year, it would work best for us if it were April 4-6.
-
I personally don't mind if its on Easter weekend. I don't come from an overly religious family (Church on Christmas only kinda family) and all my family lives onthe east coast, so for me Easter is kinda just another day. Although I guess it would make it a little harder to take time off work. Having to compete with co-workers who have kids on Spring break and people traveling to see family for Easter.
On second thought, why not a couple weeks before Easter?

I've been to WonderCon four times and each time it was in SF. When it first moved to Anaheim, I knew it would stay. Believe me it will stay. You have to be blind to not see how Hollywood has changed Comic Con and the same thing is happening to Wondercon. 2011 was my last year at WC and as long as it's in Anaheim, I will not go. The main reason I cannot go is SDCC which is a big expense and a hell of a drive on the 5. I could sit and moan about it but I'll just go to Big Wow Fest. :) It's an actual comic book convention!

Yeah pretty much. I probably would have moaned for a bit and stopped shortly after if they had just definitively announced they were moving to Anaheim, rather than getting the continued messages from WonderCon saying "we want to return to SF" and then seeing a bunch of open dates at Moscone center, and even reading comments from Glanzer that they were offered dates in SF in both 2012 and 2013 (especially when some of the Glanzer and CCI statements I've read contradict each other.) I just think it's tacky for an organization as prominent as CCI to keep on letting on so many people like this.
Regarding Big Wow, I've never been, partly because it's the week before Fanime and usually been tiny, but I've heard the last one was quite successful, so I'll probably will check it out next year especially after this year's Fanime registration line snafu.

I think their thinking is that they are avoiding public backlash from Nor - Cal - ers. I also would prefer a straight response and while I don't excuse the runaround, there's more going on bts than we know. If you're into comics, than you'll like Big Wow Fest! :)

I agree that it seems like CCI is not telling e whole story and I wish they would just be honest as to their intentions to keep it in Anaheim or actually return to SF.

I'm sure the question will come up in tomorrow's Google + Hangout with Glanzer , well maybe not since it is a SDCC follow up

On second thought, why not a couple weeks before Easter?
I think Easter just came early this past year so they had it then. I think it'd normally be a week or two ahead of it. I like Spring because I'm local and I don't have any big expenses then. There's two conventions I go to in Nov and you have all that Christmas/holiday shopping to get done.
One thing to consider though is that March/April is spring break time and the cost of plane tickets and hotels goes up esp in SoCal. But, there's not that many things going on. Go earlier to Feb and you hit Valentine's day plans. Go later and you hit Mother's day and school graduation plans.

You don't even need to +1 in order to attend, anyone can watch via YouTube. It just gives the organizers a better idea of how many are tuning in.

The hangout was a lot of fun to watch, but when asked about WonderCon, it was the basic answer we have heard over and over again. I was hoping he would slip and let even something small out about 2014, but it looks like we will have to wait until an offical announcement.

I'm on the exhibitor interest list and even those of us planning to exhibit in 2014 are waiting to find out where and when so we can apply for exhibit hall space. If I hear anything I'll let everyone know. :)

What do you think???? Wonder-Con Anaheim April 18-20,2014?? I noticed that SDCCI has the Anaheim Convention Center booked for Apr16-21st. Wha do ya think??? ;)

That's the weekend before C2E2. Marvel, DC and other companies will have issues attending both cons, so close together.

They do? That's relatively recent! But thanks for the tip! Off to book a hotel room, just in case....

Okay I just went to check for myself and didn't see it on the Anaheim Convention Center website. This is what I saw...
(https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi129.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp206%2Ftransmutejun%2FAnaheimCalendar.jpg&hash=dff58711701717941361c65ad2a6548636434551) (http://s129.photobucket.com/user/transmutejun/media/AnaheimCalendar.jpg.html)
You can see that those dates are blank, but certainly they're not 'booked'. Is there some other site where you found this?

try http://meetings.anaheimoc.org/convention-calendar/y/2014

Thanks for the 411! :)
-
That's very interesting! I didn't know about this site so thank you for pointing it out.
However the attendance estimate is strange. Only 17,000 people? This is less than half of last year's attendance...

Yep, I did the same thing. This is especially important for us, because we like to stay at the Paradise Pier Hotel, to make it easy to do both Disney and the Con. Disney tends to sell out during Spring Break, so I figured I should get in my reservations while I could!
ETA And I just realized, that's Easter weekend again! My guess is that CCI is being so wishy washy about this Con that Easter was the only date left when they tried to book.

That's interesting. I'm disappointed that the organizers are going back on their promise to have Wondercon in San Francisco. I was hoping at least for an alternate show in the SF Bay Area.
-
There is APE, but it's very different from WonderCon.
It's possible that CCI is still trying to get Moscone dates, which might be why they haven't announced the Anaheaim dates yet. You never know...

You are more of an optimist than me. I think WC is permanently gone from SF. :'(
-
You are more of an optimist than me. I think WC is permanently gone from SF. :'(
The pessimist from me fears this, but the optimist in me wonders why CCI would officially 'express a desire to move back to San Francisco' if they weren't actually trying to do so. If they just wanted to stay in Anaheim, they would simply avoid mentioning San Francisco at all, and/or make a statement that there are no current plans to move back to San Francisco. Wouldn't they?
Regardless, I suspect the Con will be in Anaheim again in 2014, and if it is gone for 3 years, it's pretty much a final death knell for coming back to San Francisco.

Two words (that I've been saying from the beginning): Damage control.
Except that it's kind of ridiculous for them to continue saying that now that they're not fooling anyone anymore.

Exactly my point. It's been so long that there's no point to 'damage control'. The damage has already been done.
Now presuming this is true, why haven't they announced the WonderCon 2014 dates yet? They already have dates booked in Anaheim, according to that convention bureau site.

If Wondercon is gone from SF I'm beyond flabbergasted as to why another event organizer like Wizardworld hasn't stepped in to make a show to replace Wondercon for SF Bay Area. There's a huge market here ready to hand over our hard earned dollars for a chance to buy and sell comics and to cosplay but there ain't...

There are (much smaller, but there) cons in San Jose, Sacramento and Stockton that you can attend if you want cosplay and comics. However it is difficult to compete with the 'Hollywood draw' that WonderCon has going for it.
-
I emailed Moscone nicely asking if they are having WonderCon in 2014. They replied saying "I'm sure Comic Con (Wonder Con show planners) will be able to answer all of your questions and concerns" and linked me to CCI's contact form. Not promising.

Yeah but i don't wanna go all the way to Sacramento where there is a small room of dealers, a couple of celebrities that were actual celebrities a few decades ago and a hobo pretending to be some Firefly guy..... :-\

Haha after i posted above i saw this: http://comicsbeat.com/wizard-adds-seven-cities-including-tulsa-sacramento-and-san-antonio/

That's the same weekend as ECCC and I'm already planning to be there... bad timing. :(

Sacramento is actually March 7-9. (March 28-30 was for Louisville)
Here's the official page. Not a lot listed so far.

If it really is March 7-9 then I might go! Thanks!

Maybe April 18, 19, & 20 (Easter Weekend) in Anaheim???? If I still gambled, I'd go all in on the river. Easter's on 4/20 this year, guess it's a good day to have the munchies.
-
The link above shows that CCI has booked the convention center for Easter weekend again.

There was an article posted about APE here:
http://comicsbeat.com/alternative-press-expo-2013-not-san-diego-or-new-york-but-something-else/ (http://comicsbeat.com/alternative-press-expo-2013-not-san-diego-or-new-york-but-something-else/)
Interestingly, this tidbit was included:
With WonderCon likely staying in Anaheim for at least another year according to Cabaza, APE is just about it for comics conventions in San Francisco right now.
'Cabeza' is 'Damien Cabaza, Manager for Sponsorship Marketing and Public Relations for Comic Con International'. I haven't heard of this guy, but this is the first 'semi-official' word we've had that WonderCon will be in Anaheim again this year.
-
At this point, I think everyone can (and is) assuming it will be in Anaheim again.
One amusing thing I noticed is that WeLoveFine is running a design contest (http://www.welovefine.com/contest/63-bee-puppycat-design-contest#.Umb7-fmsg41) right now, with the grand prize being a trip to WonderCon, and the prize details are surprisingly explicit for something that hasn't been officially confirmed.
One (1) a paid trip to WonderCon 2014! Grand Prize winner will receive a paid trip (2 nights and 3 days) to Anaheim, CA for WonderCon. Trip will include 1 4-day WonderCon membership badge, 1 round trip airfare (limited to US domestic flights only) and lodging near the convention center.
Edit: Oops, didn't see the other thread.
-
If you go to Anaheim convention center's website, the only opened weekend is Easter (April 18, 19, 20).

Random data: Wondercon registration opened on Dec 2nd last year.
-
It will be here soon. I wouldn't be surprised if SDCC goes on sale November 2 (Saturday), just to mess with Comikaze fans, and West Coast Avengers go on sale November 30 (Saturday) or December 7 (Saturday).
-
I keep thinking they should announce it any day now. But then, we're coming up on SDCC pre-reg, and that's probably occupying all of their attention right now. Registration might have opened December 2, but that was when we had August pre-reg last year.
-
Am I misremembering? I thought they used two different ticketing services last year, one for wc and epic for Sdcc.
-

They do. But CCI is still involved in the process. I can't see them spending time setting up WonderCon tickets while working through SDCC pre-reg.
-
And don't forget they might do the lottery for SDCC so it might everyone for a loop.

If they do that, it prevents all international people from buying tickets. I find it very unlikely.

They did do it for resale. They could give it a try for preregistration.

They could do a separate pre-reg for international attendees , but how many international attendees go to SDCC each year?
-
They did do it for resale. They could give it a try for preregistration.
Yes, and the international attendees were not allowed to participate in the resale. I don't think CCI would want the backlash that would ensue if they told international attendees that they could not pre-reg.
As to how many there are, I don't know, but certainly there are a lot of international people on this board, and who post on Facebook, etc. who want to go.
-
I'm still waiting for vendor info to become available. :/
-
I'm still waiting for vendor info to become available. :/
I have a feeling we wont' hear anything until the SDCC pre-registration is done (including CCI dealing with the millions of complaints that are likely to ensue).
-
I'm talking about my application to get a booth or artists alley table, it's kind of late in the game for the info to not be out. I put in the exhibitor interest form but so far this year, not a peep. I have Wondercon on my schedule tentatively, but until I can get my application in and approved, I can't really count on it 100%. On the other hand I was able to put in my applcation and write the check for space on site at SDCC for 2014 Comic Con..
-
we don't even know when & where wondercon is. i hope that'll be the first bit of info we'll get.
-

Of course we don't know for sure, but I think the Easter weekend date in Anaheim that was found is a likely candidate. But watch, I'm totally wrong and they'll have put it in San Francisco! (I wish...)
-
People should take the relatively short notice for vendors into account when they complain about lack of swag and lack of big displays at Wondercon, that all takes preparation and the certainty that vendors can get the space they want. :-\

You're very right! But that's CCI's fault, for taking so long to announce a date/confirm these things.
-

Since that is the case does CCI really have any other option at this point besides Anaheim? That seems like it would be the safest route to ensure a decent turnout from both venders and attendees.
-
I think CCI decided on their choice long ago. They booked the dates, after all. But as to why they haven't announced anything, I have no idea. I'm guessing because they were hoping to have a more definitive statement regarding San Francisco when they did (a second WonderCon up there, last minute angling for spring dates???) or maybe they were just overwhelmed with other work? I wish they'd just commit and announce already, instead of keeping us here speculating.
-
True but I suppose they may figure they have enough 'locals' in SoCal that attend rather than people that fly out for Comic Con in San Diego? So advertising isn't as big a requirement? Hopefully they announce info by next month although maybe they are concentrating on registration for Comic Con.
-
deciding on dates and having dates that everyone can plan on are two very different things. Maybe there's something happening that we don't know about.
-

That's what I think too, Alyssa. As I said earlier, maybe they're trying to set up the 'dual WonderCons' that were mentioned last year. Or something else could be going on. It's the only reason I can think of as to why they just haven't announced it already.
Regardless, it's extremely frustrating!
-
I was on the WonderCon page this morning and look what I saw! I don't know when it went up, as I hadn't noticed it before. Go to the page and look down toward the bottom of the left column. (Sorry, I can't do a screenshot as I'm at work without that software right now.)
http://www.comic-con.org/wca (http://www.comic-con.org/wca)
It says WonderCon Anaheim 2014 sponsors. I don't think this is a typo, as before they had logos underneath to show the sponsors, and those are now gone. I suspect this is part of the 'website update' they were mentioning.
So it looks like it's a go for Anaheim in 2014. (Sigh... I knew it was, but part of me was still desperately hoping for a return to SF.)

Yes. The Convention Center hasn't been showing it, but the Anaheim Convention Bureau (or some such) has. You'll see it a couple of pages back in this thread.

Whoo hoo! About time!!!!

I'm glad that they finally announced something. I just hope none of the major companies use the holiday as an excuse not to show up.
-
Still had some hope that WC would return to San Francisco (where it belongs) in 2014 but either the CCI folks just didn't try or maybe Moscone Ctr wanted to be douche bags again or a combination of both but the City by the Bay remains the only Metropolitan area that is oblivious to the con craze and without a Convention of any kind.
-
Actually, there is Big Wow Comic Fest in San Jose. Not that big, but definitely a *comic* con.
http://www.bigwowcomicfest.com/ (http://www.bigwowcomicfest.com/)
Still, I agree, WonderCon should be back in San Francisco. Unfortunately, it's not, and given that this is the third year in a row in Anaheim, I don't think it ever will be, unless they do this '2 WonderCons a year' thing, which at this point seems like pie in the sky.
I don't think the major companies will stay away because of Easter. They were there last year (well, except for Marvel, but that was a big brou-ha-ha). I think the bigger issue is if they've been given enough time to prepare something really cool.

I am definitely going to BWCF! I've heard so many good things about it. The next time I hit WC is when it is back in SF which I don't think will ever happen.
What happened with Marvel and WC?
-
What happened with Marvel and WC?
Not sure, but they didn't show. They never really gave a good explanation. This led to all kinds of speculation that it was because of D23 and that they wouldn't be at SDCC either. They ended up being at SDCC, but never explained why they weren't at WonderCon.
On the Bay Area front, have you been to the Stockton Comic Con? I've heard it's pretty good.
-
I'm annoyed that it's in Anaheim again. It needs to be in the Bay Area. WonderCon IS a Bay Area show. It doesn't have the "success" it does if not for what the Bay Area built. At least have the decency to call it a different name.
-

They did! It's now 'WonderCon Anaheim'. *rolls eyes*
I'd rather it be in the Bay Area as well, but after 3 years I think it's fair to say that it's no longer a Bay Area show. It's had great success in Anaheim, so I don't think the show 'needs' to be in the Bay Area either.
Basically, it sucks that it's not where I'd like it to be, but at this point I think it's fair to say that it's not coming back to the Bay Area. I certainly have no further expectations on that front.
-
Sorry that people are upset, but it seems like the move has only made WC bigger and better. I had never been to WC when it was up north so I can't compare the too. All I can do is compare what I've read about it being up north and what I've experienced the past two years. I'm happy to see it staying in Anaheim, not only because it's 15 minutes away, but it seems to be getting better each year. Guess we will have to wait and see if it gets better in 2014.
Stay golden Ponyboy.
-
'Better' is subjective, but bigger is incorrect. In 2011 (in San Francisco) there were 49,500 attendees. Information for the Anaheim WonderCons in 2012 and 2013 show '40,000+ attendees'. This would suggest that WonderCon is either the same size or slightly smaller in Anaheim than it was in San Francisco.
-
Did CCI put out an exact number? Who knows what the numbers are. Who knows CCI could just put out those numbers to manipulate the system. Do you work for CCI?? Are you giving us insider information?? Next time I'll ask your opinion before making a post.
Stay golden Ponyboy.
-
LOL, no, I don't work for CCI. The 2011 number is from Wikipedia, and the '40,000+' number was from a few articles about WonderCon 2012 and 2013 that were posted online.
Just wanted to clarify the facts (based on the limited data out there) that WonderCon isn't necessarily 'bigger' in Anaheim, and may, in fact, be smaller. Having attended WonderCon every year since 2009, my experience is that the 2013 Anaheim show was roughly the same size as WonderCon in 2009/2010/2011 (with 2012 being slightly smaller). Those last observations are al my subjective opinion, of course. ;)

Remember this group? https://www.facebook.com/groups/492313000782531/
It hasn't been updated in a long time, but it used to have cut and paste letters from Moscone workers saying they want WC back. These letters seem to have been deleted.
On one discussion on the WC Facebook page, I pointed out that Moscone had offered dates in 2011 (where I posted the link to the article where Glanzer says so) and had dates available in 2012. The discussion was deleted and I was banned from the page.
This year I emailed Moscone earlier about whether they think WC will return, but they're awfully mum only saying "I'm sure CCI will be able to answer all your questions."
WC is clearly not serious about returning to SF, and if Moscone actually did want it back in 2011 or 2012 I doubt they care anymore. I don't see it ever coming back.
-

I have been thinking the same thing, just based on 'hunches', but I am shocked to hear that CCI has been banning you and deleting posts for saying as much.
I just don't understand why they can't be honest and say, "We've moved the show to Anaheim, we're not going back to SF because *insert reason here*." I'd respect them far more, even if the reason is just 'We want to keep the show closer to our offices in SD.' or 'We want to be closer to Hollywood to encourage more of that kind of presence." But hiding the reasons and deleting posts makes it seem so underhanded.
-
re numbers, cci and what is the definition of 'bigger'
Historically CCI doesn't do numbers. Frankly as far as i can tell, they go out of their way to not release numbers. The only reason we know a number for SDCC is because that is what the venue holds according to the Convention center. CCI never gave out that number.
I go into detail abt CCI reticence with regards to numbers to suggest that, all conversations regarding 'bigger' or "smaller' are just vapor. We don't know the number nor will we ever know the numbers, it's CCI.
-

this is the one thing i would change if i could.
I had a conversation with an someone associated with CCI a few months ago about why something was done the way it was. I couldn't understand the rational & it caused a bit of a ruckus during the con. When the reason finally came out, CCI's reason's made total sense. I don't know why that reason couldn't be told to the attendees, it would have saved a lot of grief and hurt feelings.
IMO, CCI has been so vehemently criticized in the past for decisions they've made, they are gun shy & won't say anything about anything for fear of getting folks worked up. Unfortunately, the lack of information tends to get folks more worked up.
i had a therapist once pose the question, 'how do you deal with a significant other who's sure you're hiding something/one?" I responded by saying 'become more secretive', The therapist said "no you tell him everything until he begins to feel comfortable."
-
Well, I understand that too. CCI doesn't have to give reasons or explain. They're a non-profit company. Comic fans can be rabid (even in a good way) so giving too much information that should be kept private isn't in their best interests.
Maybe Wondercon will go back to SF next year or maybe Anaheim gives them better incentives to stay there. It isn't really our business in the scheme of things.
-
I would be mindful using number provided by Wikipedia as the correct numbers. Anyone can add info to a page, remember what happened to Daniel Tosh's Wikipedia page.
Stay golden Ponyboy.

I really think this comes down to the incentives that Anaheim and the convention center are willing to give versus what San Francisco is offering. In the past few years Anaheim has been aggressively trying to land larger conventions with concessions on the rental rates of the convention center and infrastructure support(buses, parking, etc.) as well as partnerships with other local businesses(discounted Disney passes and movie tickets). If San Francisco is unwilling to match that sort of thing it just means that CCI can afford to put more money into other things if the show is in Anaheim, not that they have forsaken San Francisco.

What is missing from this debate is that Comic-Con has come out on several occasions stating that the Moscone Center is not able to give them viable dates. How do you define "viable"?
There are so many factors that go into planning an event and picking dates, it's not just "Oh this weekend looks good, let's do it!"
1. Do the dates offered work around their existing shows? Are they in conflict with APE or SDCC and if they are not, are they dates far enough away from both of those events that they can still successfully do WonderCon? I'm sure they have a master calendar and know exactly how long it takes to plan these events, and if Moscone offers dates that overlap with their SDCC planning time, they will obviously be unviable due to lack of staff/time.
2. Do the dates work around other conventions? If you've noticed, SDCC does not tend to put their shows in direct conflict with other large shows. It may happen from time to time, but in general they stay clear of the large events so that they can bring in the exhibitors. Many exhibitors can't be in two places at one time, so if you book WonderCon to close to another big comic show you may lose some of your core exhibitors. In addition to other comics shows, they've got D23, C2E2, and PAX to plan around. For example, if DC and all the other major publishers are going to being NYCC in October and Moscone offers WonderCon October dates …. are they really viable dates?
3. Viable dates must include the appropriate amount of move-in/move-out time. I did an event once in San Jose where the only dates they could give us left us no time for move-in. We kept telling them that we needed an extra day to get the vendors in, but it was not available. For any dates that Moscone offers SDCC, it has to be bookended by move-in and move-out days, otherwise those are not viable dates.
My point is here …. SDCC has told us, transparently, that Moscone has not given them any viable dates that work for WonderCon. Just because we don't see all of what's going on behind the scenes does't mean that there aren't some limiting factors to the dates that have been offered. It's easy to sit here and guess what the reasons are, but in reality, SDCC has told us all we really need to know. The dates offered by Moscone don't work for the show. I sincerely doubt there is some sinister motive to them taking WonderCon away from the Bay Area. Why would they? It was a successful show.
-
IMO, CCI has been so vehemently criticized in the past for decisions they've made, they are gun shy & won't say anything about anything for fear of getting folks worked up.
Except for when badges would go on sale. ;)
For me, the move to Anaheim just doesn't work. I already head south to SDCC and I would never give that up. Diehard fo' life! lol ... however, I do see a logic behind WC moving down there in regards to Hollywood (Warner is the company parent of DC and Disney is the parent company of Marvel). It's simply easier for them to have it in SoCal. As I said, that doesn't work for me so I'll go elsewhere.
-
I'm sure it's also easier for them to organize an Anaheim show from San Diego, which is where their headquarters are located. It's a relatively easy drive, so easy to transport their employees to/from the show.

As for #1 and #3, I can't really say as I could not find information on the exact dates offered. As for #2 -- There are cons of significant size virtually every week of the year now. And WonderCon in Anaheim has directly conflicted with some of these so I cannot buy it being much of an issue for them. For instance, WonderCon in Anaheim was at the same time as SakuraCon, one of the major anime conventions, in Seattle for both 2013 and 2014. And they bumped C2E2 from its original dates in 2012.
For the 2012 show they didn't say they weren't offered "viable dates" -- they simply said they weren't offered "dates," and that was directly contradicted by a quote from Glanzer in an article. 2013 was where "viable" came in, but their public rationale was questionable...being the same week as a "large city-wide event" in SF (which is essentially every week in SF) and in my opinion the only reason we even got that is because we had found out what we did from Moscone.
The bottom line is, if they really wanted it to be in the Bay Area like they'd been saying, then they would have. They would have made the dates they were offered viable. If move-in was tight, they could have changed their hours. If there wasn't enough space for a 50000+ show during construction, they could have downsized for one year. If you want to do something you make it work. If they didn't want to make it work, if they got a better deal at Anaheim, if Anaheim is easier for their staff to get to, if Anaheim gave them more time to plan, then fine, but then don't keep on giving your fans the impression that you've done everything in your power to stay in SF or keep on telling them that you are hoping each year to return. That's why this has dragged on all this time (rather than just blowing over after the 2012 show like it would have if they had just been upfront, after the initial shock of them moving to Anaheim wore off) and that's what this is really about now.

Exactly. Rather than just say SF is done, bye-bye, and allow the fans to move on they've strung us along. I feel like I am back in junior high and just starting to date ... I NEED CLOSURE! ;)

I understand what an important event this is for you and how strong your feelings are, but you really are making a ton of assumptions with little information from people who actually put on events or exhibit at them.
Let's "break down" your thoughts piece by piece....
1. If move-in was tight, they could have changed their hours. Move-in is based on days, not hours. You can't simply change your show hours to make up for a day or two loss of set-up time. What many people don't realize (because they've never ben an exhibitor) is that some of the bigger booths get into the center days in advance to set up rigging and electrical. These booths cannot be assembled in hours. I know that for Comic-Von, some booths start moving in on Sunday! If Moscone was unable to provide adequate move-in dates you're going to see the loss of the big exhibitors (DC, Marvel. Dark Horse, all the gaming companies, etc...) because they can't get enough set-up time. With the loss of the big exhibitors comes the loss of revenue making it impossible to cover operating costs.
2. If there wasn't enough space for a 50000+ show during construction, they could have downsized for one year. Downsizing their attendance does't mean that the Moscone Center suddenly charges them less money to rent the facilities. If the rental prices remain the same and the operating costs remain the same (security, staff, housing, transportation, contractors, etc...) BUT the attendance decreases, what does that mean of the business? They are losing money. Making the show smaller does not necessarily make it less expensive to run, they are still paying the same facility fees but bringing in less income due to decreased attendance.
3. WonderCon in Anaheim was at the same time as SakuraCon. WonderCon can be in conflict with a small show like SakuraCon because they don't share major exhibitors. Many exhibitors move their product by vehicle from show to show. WonderCon can't put their show within 2 - 3 weeks of any other large convention that has comics publishers because the exhibitors simply could not move their product that quickly across the coast or it would be an undue burden on them. If you listen to exhibitors in this very forum, you will hear that they often have to make decisions about which shows they are going to attend each season because it is not financially feasible to attend all of them. So WonderCon has to stay away from the fall (NYCC) for sure, as well as the summer (SDCC). PAX and C2E2 are also shows they have to avoid, as well as industry events like SXSW and Sundance that take away the Hollywood component.
I'm not trying to be a debbie downer here, but you are looking at this entire thing from an emotional perspective rather than a business perspective. You are frustrated with SDCC's lack of transparency regarding why they did not take the dates offered to them, but there could be a million and one reasons behind the scenes that you have not thought of, or even larger issues like the San Francisco Convention & Visitor's Bureau not coming out in open support of WonderCon like they do in San Diego. Why is that? Does it have to do with the fact that WonderCon is a local show and it was not booking enough multi-night hotel rooms to receive priority placement at Moscone? That has been discussed and brought up routinely.
I totally feel your pain and sympathize with you, but you are making the leap from "they can't do it" to "they don't want to do it" without any actual facts or supporting evidence other than your emotional frustration that they haven't given you the answer you would like them to. Its highly possible they can't give you the answer you want to hear because it's simply not the truth.
UPDATE: I just read the two articles about WonderCon and Mr. Glanzer echoes clearly what I was saying about exhibitor move-in times being essential to an event. "We still want to get back to the Bay Area,” he told PW. “The problem is finding dates that are available with the time we need for move in and move out. But we haven’t given up on SF.” You can't change the show "hours" to make up for losing a day of move-in or move-out time. These are large scale exhibitions they are moving into the center and they need time to set-up. If WonderCon was just a small little fan table event, this wouldn't be the case, but if you want WonderCon to be, well, "WonderCon" they are going to need the time to get the exhibitors in and set-up. A couple extra "hours" isnt going to solve a major problem like that.

Wow, Mr. Glanzer definitely said it better than my big mouth ever could have.... ;D
"Although WonderCon is open to the public for only three days, it requires more time to set-up and break down. “It’s takes us a few days to move in and at least one to move out,” said Glanzer. By comparison, San Diego takes over the San Diego Convention Center for over a week, with at least two days after the show to completely move out the large exhibits.
An even bigger problem is competing dates, or “con wars.” While there are hundreds of comic cons held every year in the US alone, major organizers try not to plan a big show the same week as another major event; majors in the Spring when WonderCon is traditionally held, include C2E2 in Chicago and Seattle’s’ Emerald City Comic Con, both typically held in March and April, respectively. Glanzer indicated that up to now CCI has been very careful about not planning a show on another show’s dates but in order to move back to the Bay Area they might have to rethink that."

Dark Horse, all the gaming companies, etc...) because they can't get enough set-up time. With the loss of the big exhibitors comes the loss of revenue making it impossible to cover operating costs.
I'd give you this one, but I said earlier I can't comment on whether this was the reason as I don't have the exact dates they were offered. However, they haven't always had the big exhibitors (IIRC Marvel and some others appeared in 2011, but were absent before) and they have done fine. And they didn't get Marvel in Anaheim last year.
This one I can address. For the 2012 show they have publicly said they were offered Moscone West, which is the smaller wing. This is what I was referring to when I said downsize. Since it's the smaller wing, why wouldn't they charge less money to rent, staff, and house?
PAX and C2E2 are also shows they have to avoid, as well as industry events like SXSW and Sundance that take away the Hollywood component.
This one I'm still not convinced. SakuraCon isn't that small -- ~20,000 people. There were also people on this forum disappointed that an exhibitor wasn't at WonderCon, because they were at SakuraCon. There are so many conventions now that if you don't have it within 2-3 weeks of another large convention then there will be almost no dates. Even Wondercon in Anaheim 2014 will conflict with Salt Lake Fan Experience. Also, most of the big comic publishers will have enough resources that they can send people to two places at once. Take Dark Horse, for instance (which is actually going to be at both SakuraCon and WonderCon):
http://www.darkhorse.com/Conventions
I'm not trying to be a debbie downer here, but you are looking at this entire thing from an emotional perspective rather than a business perspective. I'm not going to deny that I'm frustrated, and I'm not going to deny that there could be a million and one reasons that I haven't thought of. But like I said earlier that isn't what this is about anymore. The point is that they've been telling us every year that they want to return to SF, and they found reasons not to take the dates. If you want to do something, then you make it work, you don't find a million and one reasons why it won't work. You work through obstacles. You take a hit here or there. If they're not willing to do this then that's their prerogative but then they don't deserve the empathy of their SF base that they've been pandering to keep year after year.

i know, i'm excited :) i loved staying right next door at the Marriott. SUPER convenient

We stay at the Paradise Pier, which is down the block. It's about a 5 minute walk, but since it's a Disney hotel it also gets us early into Disneyland. We spend the early mornings at Disney, then walk on over to the convention center around lunchtime, so this works best for us. I made my reservation ages ago, when the Easter weekend dates were first rumored!
-
Comic Girl....you hit the nail on the head. The attendees weren't staying in hotels, eating out, shopping in stores. Mostly because most people live near by.

You know, I live about an hour away from SF, so I didn't use a hotel when WonderCon was there. But I usually tried to go out to lunch. There were very few places near Moscone, and they were usually all packed!
-
And the plot thickens. Maybe that's the real reason for the move. Not because of not having the dates or the amount of time allowed for load in, but where will make the most money for everyone. I think the candy peddler is onto something.

I am from the Bay Area and want everyone to know that SF is an overpriced cesspool. The town is like Arkham Asylum, the kooks and bums are calling the shots. Keep WonderCon down in Anaheim.

Run and hide before you get lynched. I can hear the villagers forming an angry mob, And you forgot it's a pain to get from one place to another too many bridges.

Sorry Folks. Having lived and loved SoCal for the first 30 years of my life and still being a huge Laker, Dodger, Angel, Kings, Ducks, USC fan ... even I have to tell you that the beauty, character and culture of San Francisco tops Anaheim ... but it's usually warmer and sunnier in Orange County!
And that bridge, you know that famous one, the one that was in X-Men 3 that Magneto used, is pretty nice. :)

WonderCon Anaheim 2014 Masquerade Info Now Online http://www.comic-con.org/wca/masquerade (http://www.comic-con.org/wca/masquerade) badge sales can't be far off
-
My guess would be that the WonderCon tickets will go on sale shortly after SDCC pre-reg. That way CCI can 'fill in time' between pre-reg and general reg, and make it seem like they have lots of announcements/things going on. After all, the recent Toucan Blog post said that there was upcoming registration info for SDCC *and* WonderCon.
-
Confirmation of Wondercon vendor space hasn't even gone out yet. So far all I have is an email that my application has been recieved and I'll find out some time in February if I have a booth or not. I'm fully confirmed and the check is cashed for Comic Con, however. But Wondercon is running pretty late.
-
Thanks for the info, Theresa. My guess is that the delay in SDCC pre-reg is what's causing the issue. It's sad, because with everything being so late, WonderCon often has the feel of being a 'slapped-together' con, at least, online. Once you get there you realize how much time and effort they put into it, but everything often seems 'last minute/we can't get our act together' beforehand. More so since they have moved to Anaheim! Although to be fair, it has been during this Anaheim period that they have been dealing with the SDCC madness.
-
I completely forgot I don't have WonderCon tickets yet. I reserved a hotel room when the dates were announced and have been thinking I'm finished :)
It seems like putting WC tickets on sale would be a great test of whatever system CCI is working on for SDCC.
-
I'm not sure it would be much of a test. WonderCon tickets don't sell out nearly as fast as SDCC tickets, so it's not like everyone floods the system at once trying to buy.
Besides, they use a different ticket vendor for WonderCon.
-
I suppose I should ammendment that to say 'great test, compared to having SDCC pre-reg as the first live test'.
-
I completely forgot I don't have WonderCon tickets yet.
I'm right there with you about forgetting. This is going to suck a bit if their tickets go up around the same time. It's one thing spending $200 to attend SDCC. Another to spend $240 or more for SDCC & WonderCon. Especially if you have to buy more than one. Yikes. We only have a few months until the convention too.
-
The waiting is driving me crazy. I remember being able to get the WC tix in December and have it all set ahead of the date. The CCI pre-reg is pushing everything back it seems.
-
Not much new information, but a good summary of the news so far from SDCC Blog.

WonderCon Anaheim Cancellation/Refund Policy
WonderCon Anaheim Badge Registration Terms & Conditions
By registering for a paid or complimentary WonderCon Anaheim badge you agree not to sell, trade, transfer or share your comp code, barcode confirmation, or badge. In the event that WonderCon Anaheim/San Diego Comic Convention/Comic-Con International (SDCC) determines that you have violated this policy, SDCC has the right to cancel your badge(s) and keep any money paid by you. All badges are the property of SDCC and must be relinquished to SDCC upon request.
I understand that I must register an individual name for each badge and that each name must match a photo ID to receive a badge onsite. If SDCC determines that you have purchased more than one badge in your name for any day, SDCC has the right to cancel your duplicate badge(s) and keep a $5.00 service fee per cancelled badge.
TRANSFER/RESALE POLICY: RESELLING, SHARING OR TRANSFERRING A WONDERCON ANAHEIM BADGE OR COMPLIMENTARY PASS IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED.

On a serious note , I did sell a bunch of Stephen King books (over the weekend) that I used to collect, for good amount of cash >:D. It also looks like this bookseller is interested in buying a bunch of other books by authors that I used to collect. I have a pretty big Horror collection, but the Horror market really tanked way back when. I've really have not been in a collecting mode for quite some time and decided I should make a serious attempt to start selling my collection, while there is still a market for books.
Chris, I do appreciate your advice about saving , I have a tendency to impulse buy things. At SDCC I'm usually looking for things for friends nowadays

IMHO, there will always be a market for books. While e-books will likely become highly dominant at some point, there will always be people who like the physical feel of the paper, particularly with special books.
I am curious though... what kind of 'collector's books' is this guy buying? Ones that are autographed, or limited release, or have something else special about them?

Limited editions, First Editions, Signed First Editions, British editions, Advanced Reading Copies (ARC ) or Uncorrected Proofs
I used to collect these types of books. When I went to his home to sell the books , I saw a very impressive part of his collection he had in the living room. First editions of Steinbeck, Faulkner, Vonnegut, you name it he probably had it.

Possibly, but it wouldn't be by much. I'd guess a $5 increase.

Thanks for responding. I'd be happy if it's not too much. I'm already paying for Sdcc and hotel and that's already going to be a lot. I still have to get a hotel for wonder con so cheap wonder con tickets would be great. :)

I'm waiting,,, patiently, WonderCon was my very first Con. U always remember your first O:-)

According to the Anaheim Convention Center Website - Wonder-Con reserved three of the exhibit halls and the Arena for 2014 (Halls A,B,C) which means, depending how they use the space (badge pick-up, on-site reg, lines) - that we could see up to a 30% larger exhibit floor than last year - (they only used A,B and the Arena in 2013) - so it looks like they may be anticipating a bigger crowd (which also means more available tickets - I hope).

Good to know! Hopefully this also means even bigger panels!

That is good news. I'm also happy that the convention center still has even more space for Wondercon to continue to grow.

Reminds me of the Ninth Gate. lol. I bought an autographed first edition hardcover of Fight Club, wonder how much this guy I think there will would pay. I love books and like you I had a huge Stephen King collection but I had to sell it because of space.

FYI, I received an email with some WC info:

Great info, Jim! I agree, it does seem like attendee reg will open shortly!

Even if it wasn't in Anaheim Bert you could go every year for the rest of your life. You just might have to fly or drive a bit. ;)

I would fly to San Fran if I was sure I wouldn't get air sick. I forget how fast planes go on the runway

Does anyone know if Pros going to WonderCon will be able to have one free guest - like Comic-con? It did not say anything specific on that in the email that was just sent out - just that Pros should not buy a regular Attendee badge. Would like to know before WonderCon badge sales start if it is going to held before Pro reg.

WonderCon really is SDCC Lite. There will be so much to remind you of SDCC, without the massive crowds. In a way, it always makes me 'homesick' for SDCC too.
-
Got my Wondercon badge. No need for a hotel though, it's less than 20 miles from my house to the convention center.
-
Got my son's badge for WC! Waiting to see if they send me the info on a press pass. I checked the tab for press and it shows verification materials not due (but not sure if that is only for Comic Con). Either way I'm buying a badge if not a press one! Yes the badge process for WC is a lot less stressful!
-
Thanks for the heads up on Wondercon badge sales. Just got mine.
I agree about WonderCon being SDCC lite. It's like SDCC from around 15 years ago. I read somewhere here that there are more halls available to WonderCon this year.
Love hearing this.

Last year's WonderCon was my very first Con and it was great, thankfully people there gave me the heads up not to expect the same thing at ComicCon. But even being told that did not prepare me for the reality of ComicCon. Made me very glad I had gone to WonderCon first :)

I think it's awesome that you found out about this site while at WonderCon! Now this year you can be one of the 'elite' sporting your very own FoCCI lanyard!
-
My first convention was a Wizard's World before I first went to SDCC. I was in no way prepared for the scale and craziness of SDCC. Most other conventions you can experience almost everything in a day but with SDCC you can be there the entire time and not experience a third of the things to do. Wondercon is a nice medium because you aren't overwhelmed but you aren't bored either.
-
2 WonderCons before I took the plunge to go to SDCC ... technically 3 because after WC #2 I decided and went to buy badges for SDCC but WC #3 happens before SDCC. Make sense? So I owe and am eternally indebted (cursed?) to WonderCon to start me on this whole Comic Con adventure (addiction?). Most recently I traveled across country (CA to NY) to attend NYCC!!

Strange but I didn't get my email till about 1510 but yet it started getting posted here before 1030. Thankfully, not one of those events that sell out the first day.

Got the E-mail notice at 1pm PST, but didn't check my E-mail until 4pm PST. I bought my badge on my iPhone, something I would not do for a Comic-Con badge!

I read about the badges being on sale here first. So I went to the website and signed up before I received an email.

Woot! Woot! Just got my tickets! Has anyone checked the Anaheim CC website to see what else might be going on during that weekend? We all remember the insane parking situation caused by the volleyball tournament and cheerleader competition that was held simultaneously as WC in 2012. Last year was much better - hopefully, parking will be smooth this year....
-
We all remember the insane parking situation caused by the volleyball tournament and cheerleader competition that was held simultaneously as WC in 2012.
Wasn't it also raining in Anaheim in 2012?
Either WonderCon or the volleyball/cheerleading competition should have rescheduled their events so that neither would overlap. It was dumb that both were held on the same weekend when parking would be scarce.
-
It rained cats and dogs all weekend in 2012. Last year it was bright and sunny, and there were no other events at the same time.
-
Hi guys! We just realized we are going to Disneyland the weekend of wondercon and thought maybe we'd go one day since it's across the street! If we can only pick one day to go to WC, which day should we choose?
-
Hi guys! We just realized we are going to Disneyland the weekend of wondercon and thought maybe we'd go one day since it's across the street! If we can only pick one day to go to WC, which day should we choose?
First of all, wait to buy your park tickets! CCI will send out a private link to discounted tickets for convention-goers a week or two before the Con. This will be cheaper than any agency.
Secondly, it's not easy to pick a day to 'do' WonderCon. We do Disney while attending the Con, but our method is to do some of both every day. We are at Disney for rope drop and get in a bunch of rides before 11 am. Then we head down to the convention center to whatever panels interest us. In the evening, if there's nothing going on at the Con in which we are interested, then we head back to Disneyland. I find this is a much more balanced approach. It also has the added advantage of avoiding most of the Easter weekend crowds at Disneyland (which are substantial) as these crowds don't really start to build until 11 am (right about the time we are leaving the parks for the Con).
As far as programming goes, Saturday is traditionally the 'powerhouse' day, but the last year or two they have been having more and more 'big' panels on Friday and Sunday. You will likely find something to interest you every day. However as a comparison, last year Friday and Saturday sold out, while Sunday did not. But this may have been because it was Easter Sunday (as it is this year).
-
I remember Sunday was the "Evil Dead" panel. Bruce Campbell put on quite a performance then!

WonderCon Anaheim 2012, the rain walk refreshed you, but Sunday became bright and Sunny (my travel back day). Bought a Twilight Disney e-ticket for Saturday night and as, TJ mentioned, about the private link, it's a cool convention perk.
more info in the spoiler, but do recommend having the discounted Disney e-ticket option open.

So how many of us are going to be rope-dropping at Disneyland? ;)
-
I have an annual pass this year and I'm staying at the Hilton again, so no magic hours/mornings for me...my strategy is to arrive a day early and leave a day late and do the parks then. I may a squeeze a few hours during WC too. ;)
-
I remember Sunday was the "Evil Dead" panel. Bruce Campbell put on quite a performance then!
Bruce Campbell is always entertaining! I remember for a Burn Notice panel a fan asked him why he isn't in more episode and he proceeded to give that fan $20 because the producers were watching. The same guy then runs into the back of the line and asks Bruce again, why doesn't he have more love scenes with hot girls? Bruce says that is worth at least $20 but when he realizes it's the same guy, he doubles over laughing and gives him another $20. B20 was rolling with laughter. He really plays the crowd.
-
Does anyone remember how much those Disney tickets were. It sounds like a great way to see Disney after WC but with me & two tweens and wanting to have $$$ for SDCC I'm on a budget.
Although, I will say hotels are SO much more reasonable in Anaheim for WC

IIRC, they were about $20-$25 cheaper than the discount tickets you can buy online. This was for 3 day park hoppers.

It's pretty close to the con itself, like a week or two before. The good news is that it's okay to wait that long, because the tickets are just online printouts with a barcode.

Might play in a Magic tournament

One thing I love about WonderCon is how the games are right there in the middle of the Exhibit Floor. At SDCC they're tucked away in the mezzanine and most people never see them! I know that a lot of the time I never get up there, because I'm so busy doing everything else!
-
Well, in the early days it used to be on the SDCC floor. I remember seeing them play .. they just use the space for exhibition now. If Wondercon gets bigger, they may get moved again too.
-
The convention tickets are good through the 14 day period, even on Easter. We used ours last year all through Easter/WonderCon weekend.
Even with the new Disney prices, which rose this Sunday, those discounted tickets will be even more of a bargain!

I believe it was only the Disneyworld tickets which increased today, not the Disneyland tickets.
Regardless, the WonderCon convention discount on Disneyland tickets is pretty good, and worth waiting for.

On the Feb 15th newsletter (anyone can sign up) I read something of interest to Steampunk fans going to WCA and SDCC:
On February 22, The Disney Gallery at Disneyland will unveil a new exhibit titled Mechanical Kingdoms ~ Steam-Driven Visions of a Victorian Future. Steampunk, a subgenre of science fiction loosely built around retro-futuristic visions of a steam-powered society, has been gaining a following over the past several years. The movement, which is expressed culturally and stylistically in everything from technology and design to music and fashion, was dubbed steampunk in the late 1980s.
Though certainly not part of the steampunk “wave”, Walt Disney Imagineers have been creating their own visions and versions of retro-futuristic technologies since well before that time, incorporating them into Disney Parks and attractions around the world. Mechanical Kingdoms ~ Steam-Driven Visions of a Victorian Future features conceptual designs and ideas for an array of inventive vehicles, machines and gadgets. The collection also shares some of the same inspirations as steampunk — most prominently a fascination with the extravagantly inventive visions of tomorrow expressed by such Victorian futurists as Jules Verne and H.G. Wells.

RFID wristbands!
Don't laugh! People have been saying the same thing regarding SDCC. If we all had non-removable RFID wristbands, then we couldn't 'share' badges, and our pictures would come up with a simple scan, as well as our names, and it would be more difficult to 'scam' the system. You never know, it could happen.

If we all had non-removable RFID wristbands, then we couldn't 'share' badges, and our pictures would come up with a simple scan, as well as our names, and it would be more difficult to 'scam' the system. You never know, it could happen.
Would be a way better system. My husband has coworkers who have created fake badges and didn't get caught for 3 days. >:(

At least it sounds like they did, eventually, get caught.

ugh. Yeah. But 3 days later. Not much of a big deal if they don't get caught until late Saturday or early Sunday lol.
Imagine if we could get all the people that cheat the system (sharing badges, making fake badges, etc)...and just eliminate it.
I'd be ok with the RFID wristbands for that reason. I haven't attended Coachella since they started using it, but it's one example of a big event that uses it.

I got no problem wearing a wristband! If It's at WCA be nice to a Disney discount. At SDCC, I'd like it for PN to see booth wait times.

I am all for RFIDs! Wristbands, badges, hell I'd be fine with a RFID mask, especially if looks like a Cylon.

I have wondered about this often and I have a feeling it probably happens a lot. I've never had my badge scrutinized or even kinda closely looked at.....they pretty much just glance that you are wearing one. I'm actually shocked your husband's co-workers were caught.

Online volunteer registration for WCA 2014 will be open beginning on Monday, March 3, 2014 at 9:00 am, Pacific Time,

Well, not to me, but then I'm a huge Tron fan. It's okay, very psychedelic and trippy. But I suppose anything is better than the go-go dancers they used to have!

It happened to my friend and I at SDCC. I guess our badges looked different enough that they stood out but they moved us aside and waved the blacklight over it and let us pass through.

Much better then before, and like transmute said it always changes so you won't get the same places back to back.

Same with us! We had to go about 13 times to get everything. To this day we've only seen the Yoda segment in the middle once, and we've been maybe 40 times. And my husband was the rebel spy once too! I keep trying every time, but it's never me. I guess I don't look like a spy.
Speaking of Star Tours, this video still gets me excited for Disneyland...

Look's like they've moved the show floor to Halls B and C. This means the show floor will be larger than last year (due to the fact there is no massive Arena queuing area to take up space. Just comparing it to last year's floorplan it looks like there are more vendors. How exciting!!!

It's really not news, but if you're going to be in town for WC you might want to check out Frank and Sons Show (http://www.frankandsonshow.net). It's an indoor swap meet for comics and collectables. It's the type of vendors you find at SDCC or WC away from the big names. Depending on traffic it's a 15-30 minute drive from Anaheim. It's free admission and parking (you have to make sure you read the signs where you can park). They are only open on Wednesday from 3:00 pm - 9:00pm and Saturday 09:00 am - 5:00 pm.

Strange. Warner Bros TV and Animation get panels, so doesn't make sense to repeat those. At least show the last Godzilla video clip presentation from SDCC? That's just a few minutes though.

Given that they did a Pacific Rim panel at WonderCon with just Guillermo Del Toro/no cast members, a Godzilla panel doesn't seem out the question.

What are the lines like for wondercon panels?
Occasionally some of the non-arena rooms can fill up (like last year they had Geek & Sundry in an upstairs room and it filled) but your'e usually okay being in there for the panel beforehand. I don't think the arena ever filled up last year.
One thing about the arena... if you walk in there and it's filled with people and they make you go up and up and up to the nosebleed seats, don't be disappointed. The view is fantastic! We ended up there last year during the Pacific Rim panel and we saw everything so clearly! Made me wish they had an arena at Hall H.
-
Worst line is the Starbucks line
Stay golden Ponyboy.

The lines are not that bad, esp. compared to Comic Con.

The lines for autographs still get bad, but not SDCC bad. I think the longest line last year was for The Jim Lee signing.

Ah, I tend to skip autographs for panels and shopping/browsing. The lines for signings do get crazy.

It's at 1100 so I would say at the minimum 9:30-10:00. From the sounds of it, a lot of people want the poster.
Stay golden Ponyboy.
Actually, according to the link it says at 1030, don't want anyone to be late. wait, maybe I do cause I think that you are right and this will have a line.
Director Gareth Edwards and the following Godzilla poster will be available during an autograph signing at 10:30am.

I'd say if you want to get into that signing, be at the Legendary booth the minute showfloor doors open. I'm going to guess they will distribute tickets. Just to be sure, I'd ask them at the Legendary booth on Friday how they do their autographs and get the skinny. I REALLY wish I could go on Saturday for this. *sigh*
-
It seems unlikely that they will sell badges on-site, regardless of being sold out or not, because this is mentioned on the WonderCon badge info page: http://www.comic-con.org/wca/2014/badge-sale
"Please note: this year, badges for WonderCon Anaheim will be available for purchase ONLINE ONLY! No badges will be sold at the Anaheim Convention Center.
To save people from traveling to the Convention Center only to discover the convention is sold out, we will sell badges online only. By buying a badge online, you will be guaranteed entrance into one of the most popular comics conventions on the calendar."
The only reason I ask is because I'm trying to get one of my friends in the OC to stop by. The only reason there was no onsite sale last year was because tix sold out before the last week
-

Just asking, but wouldn't they be able to purchase the tickets even that morning online (as long as they're not sold out) and then go to the convention center and get their badge?

Just got an email from Lion Forge Comics. During their panel on Saturday at 11:00 am in room 210a, Rampage Jackson and Mr Belding (principle for saved by the bell) will be making an appearance during the panel.

I was thinking that they gave it to you as he signed it. Yeah, I'm with you, I just want the poster and I'd like to go to the panel.
We should team up, whoever gets there first saves a spot and the other brings the Starbucks ;)

Has anyone heard if they will be handing out wristbands for it.? I got the link but didn't download it yet. Is it any good?

If you are talking about the Godzilla poster I'm going to do what cracksback suggested and go to the Legendary booth on Friday and ask them what the procedure will be to get the poster on Saturday.
-
Random trivia: did you know that the words in Japanese on the Godzilla poster roughly translates to "(The) King Comes Back?" Or, if you want to transliterate a little bit better, it means "(The) King Returns." (I put "the" in parentheses because they don't really use articles in the Japanese language--it's supposed to be implied, depending on the context of the words, phrases, and situation.)
Just thought I'd pass on the info. Ha ha.

I'm leaving tomorrow at 5am but oh man, I only got 3 hours of sleep last night. I dunno if I should do something and go back to sleep or rest at 8pm tonight. I'm gonna see my doctor today since I'll be at WC on the weekend
-
Arriving up tonight around 9 PM. If anyone wants to meet for a drink let me know!
-
Looks like Katella is still down to one lane going from the 5 to the convention center. If you can do the carpool lane, go to Gene Autry exit then take Anaheim blvd up to Katella to miss part of the construction.

Studios stuff. I'm really curious to see what I find tomorrow. I will try to meet you guys at the food trucks. I plan to be there around 9am to hopefully score parking, then just get in line for badge pickup. I don't have a FOCCI lanyard b/c I didn't order it until late last week.

"Singer had been scheduled to do two hours of one-on-one interviews during the convention on Saturday, April 19, as well as a press line and press conference, according to an email sent by Fox’s digital PR team. But Singer will no longer fulfill those obligations; instead, producer-screenwriter Simon Kinberg will take over Singer’s interviews, Kinberg’s rep confirmed."

You got to be kidding me?? Why is there even 1 person in line at this time? Unless I'm missing something but what panel, exclusive or whatever is there to be there that early? Geez. I'd still be sleeping but my stinkin nephew who's room I'm taking over this weekend while I'm staying at my sister's house had an alarm going off at like 6 am and I couldn't go back to sleep and now I read this? Maybe he could email you his permission and a copy of his ID? I know people have been able to pick up badges at SDCC for friends in the past with their IDs and written letters giving their permission.
All of these new announcements coming out these past few days after the refunded badges sold out again...

I'm with a ya. I live in San Diego and got here around 11:45. Traffic wasn't too bad but downtown traffic was heavy. Parked in a Con Center by lot and had to drive around for 15-20 min. to find a spot.
Right now I'm sitting in Teen Titans Go pane and I'll probably hand here until Regular Show is over.
Besides "waiting" to find a spot, there has been zero waiting. Badge pickup was super easy and there are PLENTY of open seats in 300AB right now

The disabled services entrance to the convention floor was a joke this morning. People were told that they would be let in about 5 minutes earlier than the regular line instead a convention center employee held the line about 10-15 minutes after they started letting other people in, so even artist alley was packed by the time I got to push my brother onto the convention floor. Amazed at the number of people that felt the need to jump in front of a wheelchair as if it had airbrakes. I was also shocked at the number of one adult and 3-5 children groups, really contributed to the congestion. And to top off my day a woman rammed her stroller straight into the side of my leg and buckled my knee.
Overall one of the worst days that I have ever had at a convention and most of it was caused by people that little to no awareness or concern for other people.
-
Sorry to hear that. I know at SDCC ADA had their own entrance. Ya last year staff pro was going to open the ADA entrance after everyone else......ya that changed after everyone was ready to lynch the guy.

Worst part of that is we later heard one of the convention center supervisors laughing about it with another convention center employee later in the day. I had heard some bad things about the Anaheim Convention Center employees before but hadn't experienced it until today. I just don't understand anyone thinking that messing with disabled people is funny. It's a shame that people not even associated with CCI can create such a bad image for one of their events.

Sorry to hear about this. That's a bummer. My dad now requires some "disabled services" and while not a wheel chair right now that is on the horizon so it's disappointing to hear this. Now I have to confess I'm guilty of "zoning" and I brought my 8 year old daughter and 9 year old nephew today and I know we jumped in front of people be it disabled ones but we certainly try to be aware so take my apology for all those who did this unintentionally. Hope your leg and knee is OK too!

I had a great day and time today at WonderCon! Overall it's just so much less stressful than SDCC and in some ways not having any real desirable must have exclusives for me actually made for a much more relaxing time. Don't get me wrong, still picked up a few exclusives ... 24, Transformer, and Batman comics ... but beyond that, my "lucky" 8 year old daughter and my 9 year old nephew who I brought out ended up pulling winning tickets for the Revolution signing!! ;D Me and my best friend ... the 2 adults ... nothing! So yes we did "steal" their tickets and go to go the signing and the executive producer and Elizabeth Mitchell (Rachel - Lead Actress) and Stephen Collins (Rachel's dad/Dr. Gene Porter - Supporting Actor) were there and so cool, gracious, nice and warm. They talked to everyone, shook hands, etc. We were like the 4th to the last of this huge group and they were just as cool and engaged with us. I watch the show with my wife, it's not my number 1 must see TV, but it's a weekly record on my DVR but I'm bigger fan now. So let me make a plea to everyone to go watch the show as it's on the bubble to be renewed.
I also "won" the signing to the new upcoming show "Salem." I believe it premiers on Sunday. However, that was simply first come first serve ;) as there wasn't a big enough line to do a drawing so they just started handing them out! It was a fun experience but I had no idea who the actors/actresses were and anything about the show minus what I read up on while I was in line waiting on my iPhone! :P
We also checked out the Frozen Story Board panel. Remember I had my 8 year old daughter! ;) It was a huge crowd so we got there about 30 minutes early but they literally capped the line about 10 from us. However we just hung out for a bit and within a couple of minutes a few people left so they let us in. Now we weren't able to sit with each other but we did get 3 seats within eye distance from each other so I could easily watch the kids. My buddy was way on the other side though. It was an interesting panel but just as much about story boarding as about Frozen so my daughter enjoyed the visuals but was a little bored when they actually talked about the story board process.
From there we did a fairly thorough walk through of the convention floor, got luck and happened to be walking by the Fox booth when they were handing out some cool full size official movie posters of How to Train Your Dragon 2. (So if you are a fan, let me know/PM me, I should have an extra one I'm happy to give you. Just pay postage and handling). By this time, the kids and actually me and my buddy were getting hungry and tired so we called it a day and headed out.
I have a 3 day badge so I'm supposed to go tomorrow but I'm tired. Maybe I'll feel more up for it when I wake up.
-
I was not lucky on the drawing for the group autographs from the cast of "Revolution." :(

Were they Anaheim Convention Center employees or were they CSC Event Staff Security? They're the ones with the yellow shirts. They also do security at San Diego Comic-Con.

No, it was definitely a convention center employee, all of the sercurity people we encountered were very polite this year.

I had a great time! The day flew by so quick. I thought there would be traffic from SD but there wasn't. So I was there about 90 minutes early for badge pickup, but just did some internet on my phone while I waited.
Badge pickup was smooth and fast and I had an hour to spare so I went into Hilton food court and got a burrito bowl at Baja Fresh and found a table with an outlet under it so sat there and charged my phone back up while I ate.
Noon I went back to CC. They opened doors about 8 minutes late, but there were already a ton of people in there. I wanted to get a shirt and get that over with, there was a pretty long line. I got in it and spent my first 45 minutes doing that. Bad idea. Only a couple hours later I see it never had a line like that again and by 5pm no line at all.
I then went as and got the Bravest Warriors and Lumberjanes exclusive covers, then headed to get the Blue Lantern Flash Funko exclusive. They were out of the metallic variation for the day, but I didn't want that one anyway. They were gouging on these things. The regular was $17, the metallic was $35......I'm sorry, but not paying $35 for a Pop.
Then I took my stuff to my car because I had great close parking. Headed back into Strong Women and their Creators panel with James Robinson moderating and guests Kelly Sue DeConnick, Cliff Chiang, Gail Simone and another artist who I can't recall right now. It was awesome. Gail and Kelly Sue tore it up. Kelly Sue was droppinf F bombs left and right until she noticed kids in the room. Great panel.
Headed back down to show floor to browse until 5 pm Gail Simone signing. I've had bad luck with her SD signing being capped in the past so was determined to get there early. Well, being solo I got stuck at a booth that lost internet trying to run my CC in some trades. Nightmare, so I arrive only 15 min early for Gail....it's been capped. FML. I only stayed that long for this. This ended up in a funny Twitter back and forth between Gail's husband and I and then Gail trying to get my book signed. I'm confident we will connect at SDCC.
I then decided I was meeting someone so headed to Artist Alley and met El Maestro himself, Sergio Aragones! What a kind man. Signed a copy of Funnies for me complete with a doodle of himself. Wonderful experience.
It is 630 by now so I decide to get in line for Geek & Sundry panel. First panel with a line that I saw...Regular Show had filled before it.
This was such a fun panel. Wil and Felicia have great chemistry. Lots of laughs. This was a 90 min panel and for the last 30 Wil left and Felicia brought out the cast of Spooked, her new G&S show for a quick 30 min. This had previously been slated for the whole panel but changed last minute....I have to wonder if it had anything to do with the Bryan Singer scandal since he is the EP of Spooked. Anyway, leaving the panel we all got "I <3 TableTop" buttons! My only WC swag of the day other than a bunch of DC posters they had been handing out like hotcakes.
It was now 830 and time to drive back to SD. So sad I will not be there today!

Oh, forgot to mention that when the Spooked cast came out one of the actors yelled, "Hello San Diego!!!" LOL. Felicia tried to smooth it over and ignore it, but he realized it and later corrected it. Was pretty funny

Guys...I'm beat lol. Yesterday was great. We mostly walked the floor and bought too many comics and tradebacks. We ended up getting the blue flash (both). Though my husband will most likely keep the regular and resale the metallic at a later date or use it in one of his trades.
Checked out Marjorie Liu. Interesting panel since half the people there were fans of her romance novel. Such a weird dynamic with the other half being NYX and X23 fans lol. ... Checked out IDW's panel today as well as Kelly Sue. She always cracks me up.
Managed to also pull a ticket for Once Upon A Time. So that was nice. But they were insane strict with photos. And it was in a private room so you couldnt get away with it. The poster is lovely though and the actors were cordial.
I spent even more money today lol. Prints. Trading cards. More comics and tradebacks. Gah lol
Way more cosplayers today. Especially the really good costumes since tonight is the masquerade.
Love that WC is still more mellow than SDCC though it is getting a bit crowded
-
How did autographs at WC work? There was nothing I knew of that I wanted, but was curious if they do it like SDCC with the drawings in an autograph area? I'm curious if anyone got into the Godzilla signing and if Cranston signed.....*sigh* what I wouldn't have given for that moment!

Love that WC is still more mellow than SDCC though it is getting a bit crowded

I had a great time! The day flew by so quick. I thought there would be traffic from SD but there wasn't.
Same for me; I was shocked at how little traffic/car congestion there was for me driving from San Diego. I got there in around an hour and ten minutes (would've gotten there earlier if silly people didn't decide to only go 5-10 miles over the speed limit :P ).
Got parking in the garage right by the arena, and was in line around 8:30am for the arena. The line to get in moved really quick and efficient, my son and I got great seats, and we were ready to go. The WB panel was fun, with Bill Paxton delivering the "Game over man: game over" line from ALIENS (twice) with zero prompting from fans. He also gave a "Hail HYDRA." He knows how to give the fans what we want.
The GODZILLA footage was really awesome. I'm not a huge Godzilla fan (REALLY like the original GOJIRA, but not into any of the sequels or other remakes), but I'm really excited for this film. The footage screened (basically Godzilla's reveal in Hawaii, intro of another creature, and Godzilla about to open up a whoop azz can on other creature) only made me more excited for the film.
Next up was Fox. The DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES stuff was great! When the last one came out I wasn't hyped about CGI apes but they looked awesome for that. This time around the CGI is even better, and the motion capture stuff is mind blowing. Andy Serkis was of course asked to deliver a line in Gollum's voice and he of course obliged.
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON was next, and my son was super hyped for that. The animation looks really nice, and afterwards we scored VIP passes to a screening of 60 min. of footage. The good was the footage: awesome spectacle & world building. Takes place 5 years after the original with all the same talent returning. Can't stress how great this film looks, with animation that looks very photo realistic at times, and wildly inventive as far as dragon stuff. I love how the man character's dragon really acts like a domesticated house pet! The bad was the footage cut off right before a major fight sequence, leaving us all annoyed we have to wait 8 weeks to see the end. But overall a great experience
After being caught in an ugly sexual harassment lawsuit DAYS OF FUTURE PAST director Bryan Singer skipped Wonder Con. The footage shown was the opening battle in the future that is featured a bit in the trailers. I wasn't enthusiastic about this film a week or two ago, but the last trailer + the footage I saw today changed my mind a bit. I'm cautiously optimistic that this will be entertaining, with seemingly well-staged and inventive action set-pieces (at least the opening one).
For me things went REALLY smoothly the last two days: traffic and parking were as good or better than expected and I don't have any complaints. That all being said, I still can't imagine this location working for the epic size and scope of SDCC. The exhibit hall seemed to have more booths this year, and the arena is literally the perfect event for huge panels. Otherwise traffic, parking, and logistics would feel worse with SDCC than San Diego does IMO. WonderCon is the perfect size for this venue, and I hope it Anaheim continues to host WonderCon (sorry San Fran fans - in a perfect world there is WonderCon 'north' and 'south'). It really seems like CCI has tweaked things form past years to greatly improve logistics and for that I give them huge props!
We probably won't go back tomorrow, as I feel like we saw everything we wanted the last few days. I think the panels were much better this year than last year, and other than Marvel having more of a presence I wouldn't change a thing (except for the troubling experience mentioned previously about disabled services - that's inexcusable and hopefully more a reflection of a few bad ding dongs than the overall staff/policy).

Some were first come first serve and others you needed to get wristbands in the morning. On Friday I got a wristband for tomorrow's Dark Horse Serenity signing. Friday's Jim Lee's signing need a wristband, but he flew thru the wristbands so everyone got to go thru the line. People went thru the line twice.
Stay golden Ponyboy.

I was at both the "Lucy" and the "Deliver Us From Evil" panels at the Arena. During the Q&A there was at least one person in both panels who got a little too personal with the questions, causing the mike monitor to cut the mike. Someone at the "Lucy" panel said to Luc Besson "you used to make good movies ... " (cut), a male fan told Olivia Munn at "Deliver Us From Evil," "I love you so much ... " (cut) and a third fan at the same panel who seemed drunk dropped an F bomb (cut).
Other than that, I enjoyed both panels. Going back to "Deliver Us From Evil," at the start someone in the audience yelled "Olivia I love you!" in which she replied "how big is it?", eliciting gasps from the audience. She later saw instructions on the table informing the panelists to keep in mind some people are under 18 in which she apologized for the "how big" remark.

I came up from San Diego Thursday afternoon with my wife and son. Traffic was terrible, but we got here with a little time to spare to get tickets (around 6:45). Then we checked into the Marriott and went to DCA for dinner and a few rides.
Friday we forgot it didn't open until noon and got up pretty early, but we were glad to get a little extra relaxation time in the room. We split up for panels, with my wife going to writing-oriented panels and my son and I hitting the Jim Lee panels and Teen Titans Go. We all met up for some shopping on the floor and the Cosmos screening, which had no Q&A at all, just "here's an episode". We still enjoyed it, though, and then went up to Knotts for chicken dinner.
Saturday I met up with Jim Watari for a breakfast burrito while every one slept, then I did the panel thing with my family again: Cartoon Voices (fun), Star Wars Rebels (great), creating comics for creative kids (great), Adventure Time (shut out, only long line wait of the Con for us) and then dinner from a couple of the food trucks and the Masquerade. It was our first WonderCon masquerade, and there were plusses and minuses compared to the SDCC version, but in all we had a great time.
Sunday we're either doing Disneyland together or splitting up so some can do a little more at the Con. It's definitely been a good weekend. While it's grown over the last couple of years, it's still a very manageable experience compared to SDCC, which is something I expected to lose this year.

If there is anyone going to WC today that is planning on some serious dollar bin diving today, please message me. I have a favor to ask, but only if it will not put a person out of their normal con activities. Thanks.

Autographs are similar to SDCC. Separate line for ticket lottery for exclusives. Some you have to go to the company booth. Some in the designated signature area. Etc etc
For OUAT they had us in a private room on the second floor. When they said "no photos" there was no way around it...unlike at SDCC where you can take pics from the line at least. The Spartacus cast was on the exhibit floor and they were cool and taking pics with ppl
I did not like the line set up at the end of the day. It was too easy for people to jump lines and cut. A guy in front of us walked away with 3 wristbands b/c he was jumping lines and noone stopped him. Same with a girl behind us. This was part due to having all lines next to each other, and they started at different times. ... SDCC isnt perfect in the setup...but by having them all set up in one line and you pull from obe canister then go to the back of the line...prevents ppl from line jumping way more than this experience. We could've easily done the same thing considering where we were in line. But we're not like that

I hate it when they don't know how to handle a line. Friday morning when I was in line to buy a shirt, the people they put in charge of it had NO IDEA how the line worked and it turned into a fiasco and those of us in line having to tell them how the damn line worked.....they kept sending new people in front of everyone who'd been in line for ages. SDCC really, really sucks in the morning letting people in the CC when the doors open.....I learned my lesson the hard way. Wait in the line they have put off in the grass after the line break, and you lose bigtime b/c they just let all the people walking up in before you.

Maybe it was a lottery? Ohhhhhh ... Snap. ;)

I'm fine with a lottery. You don't have to wait in line for it. As long as they pick one or the other, fine by me. I just need to know how to manage my time and the people they hire need to understand how things work

I hear you man. Controlling a line isn't rocket science. Shame you and others got screwed.
-
There has to be something said about the line management for D23. Like them or not, Disney had line management down to a science. If you think about it. It's not rocket science. Guess that says a lot about the quality of the person hired by staff pro or CSC.

Sadly, it seems they just need a body. Now, if that body only had a mind.

W'rein the middle of nowhere right now on I-5 driving home but we had a great time. It was exhausting, hopping back and forth between Disneyland and the con, but we did it, multiple times a day on some days! We really enjoy the opportunity to mix it up in tat way at WonderCon Anaheim.
Friday we watched the screenings and Revolution panel in the arena, and my husband saw the cosmos panel/screening while I met up briefly with some FoCCI people. Saturday we went to the 100 panel and then were able to get into the arena in the very back corner in time for How to Train Your Dragon and the Fox panel. Totally coincidentally. Rando spotted me coming up the stairs... In the dark... and managed to say hi as we sat 3 rows behind him! Saturday night my husband and daughter saw the biotech panel and had a great time. Then today my daughter and I went to see Kiera Cass and my husband caught the BSG panel.
Glad to see everyone had such a great time!
-
Had a great time, made even better because I shared it with my daughter who is 15 and not always interested in the same things as mom anymore.
She was there for Fri and Sat but I promised her all 3 days next year along with some time spent at DLand :)
It was awesome and we had a blast. Now I am just waiting for son to get home from work so he can check out his loot from WonderCon including a set of 12 dragon magnets I picked up from fellow forum member Theresamather, who is a very talented artist.
See you all in 92 days.
-
I loved Wondercon. Without all the movie studios there was so much more room for independent artwork and media. Did anyone else think Artist Alley was bigger than it is at SDCC?
I too spent a lot of time going back and forth between WC and Disneyland. It was awesome and I think maybe this trip will become a yearly tradition. WC reminded me a lot of Phoenix comic con. Low key, room to walk and incredible talent in the booths.
-
I'm to the point now where I like Wonder Con at least as much as SDCC. There's enough big stuff there to keep things interesting, but not to the point where the little guy can't get in there. It's much less stress getting passes, proximity to Disneyland makes hotels easy, it costs less, and as a whole reminds me of comic con when it wasn't a mad house. This year's show was a lot of fun.
That being said, it's more and more crowded each year, it makes me wonder how long before they add a 3rd (and eventually a 4th) hall for vendors, and then how much longer after that before it turns into SDCC v2.
-
Artist alley is definitely bigger ar WC and has some pretty big name artists that don't even think about doing a booth at SDCC. It was really nice!

Wondercon Friday Random Observations (some good, some bad):
I got in the badge line once it died down at 11:45 and they timed the badge system perfectly where I strolled onto the floor right at noon.
My cell phone went from 75% battery to 5% battery without me even touching it when everyone started to show up at 11 am.
They need to take a cue from San Diego and crank the air conditioning to account for all the body heat when everyone shows up. Normally, it is just me that is overheated, but a lot of people were complaining about it.
It was next to impossible to explore parts of the floor in any efficient way because of walkway artery clogging. Two things going on here: There appears to be a standard width for secondary show walkways which is too narrow. Second, people need to be aware that they are blocking traffic--this is an etiquette thing that I might start another thread on.
More comic book booths. There were considerably less than when the show moved to Anaheim 3 years ago.
Farmer-tan Bane coplay made me giggle.
Overall, I had a good full day and got a lot of comics. The above are more just observations than anything else.

I had to turn of Blue Tooth and WiFi because they were draining my battery, that's probably what happen to your phone. When the signal is bad or weak your phone keeps searching for a connection. If you have AT&T it was probably trying to connect with the AT&T WiFi hotspot location at both the convention center and the Hilton hotel

I was fighting not to fall asleep during work today. I'm a teacher...so good thing I walk around most of the time helping students. But during my prep hour, I just wanted to nap. Now that I'm home, I'm gonna catch up on last Friday's Hannibal episode and pass out for a few hours :D

You're not alone. Everyone is tired today.

I would like to add that for this year's WonderCon, I figured out how to use the bus system with O.C. Transit (thanks Zero!). This is the first time I took the bus since relocating to Orange County four years ago. It certainly beat paying the expensive $12 fee for parking and of course dealing with the possibility the lot/garage may be filled up and you have to look elsewhere (possibly a more expensive parking option).

I hear ya. I was so tired yesterday, but it made me happy knowing I had requested the Monday following ComicCon off and that I had booked Sunday night in San Diego so I wouldn't be driving home tired.
Even though I had a nice quiet room and a nice comfy bed I was still waking up at 0530 because I was excited for WonderCon, I don't even get up that early for work. Go figure.

I was delightfully surprised by how many people brought their SDCC 2013 swag bags to Wonder Con.

But then you can get more bags at We Love Fine

Well it's Thursday and I'm still hung over or I think I just miss it! I did have to leave WC early Saturday after the Fox panel and catch a flight out of Long Beach since I promised my little daughter, who came with me, we'd be back home to celebrate Easter with mom and siblings so maybe I'm just really sad and bummed I didn't get to go Sunday too! The good news is, I work in Education and on a Year Round Calendar so I have this week off so I can slowly recover and get my fix on here.
-
This year's WC was Kind of like a STD.....was all happy and giddy during the con....been sick with a head cold/sore throat since Tuesday. I only made out with one Walker, but she looked clean.

WonderCon Anaheim 2014 Masquerade Photo Gallery posted:

'Twas fun, but Ashley seemed way out of her depth as MC - flubbing names of people and costumes left and right - past MC Phil Foglio (and Robert Englund back in the day at SDCC) = greatly missed by this attendee ;)
