Last year, my friend and I were outside of the hotel past midnight after being out and about since 5am. We were exhausted and just going to smoke a cigarette (yeah, yeah, I know) before bed. There was this woman also smoking and she seemed sad, so my friend started talking to her. Turned out she wasn't sad, just tired like us, and she worked for BBC Worldwide (or maybe BBC America?). Anyway, she was working herself up to go to the Nerd HQ VIP party. They had ordered a car to take her there (we were at the Hilton Gaslamp), but she didn't want to go. She then spent the 15 minutes before the car arrived trying to convince my friend and I to use her passes and go in her place. It seemed like she was expected to "make an appearance" and she wanted it to seem like her passes were used. She even offered to let us take the car that was coming when we said it was really far away. My friend and I, at that point, were so tired and grubby from the day that we said no. If only we had known beforehand! We would have been showered and refreshed and ready! Ah well. Still a funny story to look back on. Only at Comic Con would you fall backwards into a VIP party invite.

That was really nice of her to offer. They probably wouldn't have let you in, but who knows. But, if you were able to get in, you would have been surrounded by a gazillion actors, writers, producers, etc. We were invited and it was so much fun!! Matt Smith was a blast!!! He grabbed us onto the dance floor and then later he got Kass a drink because he was taking forever at the bar. Hobnobbed with peeps from TWD, Agents of Shield, as well as Stephen Amell, Nathan Fillion, some guy from Teen Wolf Paris was howling over, Seth Green and naturally our friends bestie, Zac. We were chatting with a guy that was on my friends show and his boyfriend was just standing there so I started chatting with him. Super nice guy, talking about random stuff and then he said he's going to go to Hall H tomorrow (which would have been Saturday). I laughed and said "Not if you aren't in that line right now!" He said he's going to be escorted in. "Oh you have connections?" He said "Oh, I'm ON the panel." Say what? "I'm on a TV show called Orphan Black." I've never seen the show at that time and figured he was someone that was on a few episodes and gets killed or something. Surprise!! It's actually a main character. So Jordan Gavaris is our new pal, who plays Felix.

We didn't take any photos except one, Paris took one with Zac....but that didn't really count because he's Zac and loves his photo taken. haha

My friends sneak into the Hard Rock party upstairs every year.

On Sunday, there's an annual party with comic artists, writers, some actors, etc. It was so weird to see Q from Impractical Jokers walk in and hug and kiss the people throwing the party. Come to find out, he used to work for them! That's the night Kass turned 18 at midnight, Q said "let's go to a strip joint!" I said Paris is too young. "Ahh, she's cute, they will let her in without carding her." ha After midnight, he said he's too tired and needs to go to sleep. But, we get to go to their show when they come back out!

One of my favorite Comic-Con events was the Dethklok concert/party on the USS Midway.  There was limited (free) admission and I got a couple of passes because I was happened to see an update ASAP about info, jumped on it, and got passes.  There was a semi-open bar (IIRC we got two or three free drinks, and then it was a cash bar?), fun [adult swim] Metalocalypse-related stuff, and an incredible concert: great metal music, TONS of comedy via video and an extended cameo by Rockso.  After that an awesome DJ spun a set at an after-party.  Really incredible night, and very fun.

A few years in a row I got into the LA Times party.  It was on the roof of a hotel.  One year, the summer of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, it was sponsored by Marvel, so there were TONS of marvel comic people there, as well as studio people.  There was a 100% open bar, free food, and some cool swag (I remember one was an iPhone case that looked like the GotG Awesme Mix vol 1 tape).  Michael Rooker stopped by later in the evening and chatted with fans and was very cool.
That was another event where I saw the notifications ASAP and jumped on it: on Twitter.

I'm a HS music teacher, so my summers are fairly laid back and I have time to waste on the computer.  I haven't gone to any big parties in a few years, mostly because my now-teenage son goes with me to just about everything.  A lot of the parties are adult-only.

Really jealous of these stories, folks! The best we did was go to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund party last year. We lucked out because we were staying at the same hotel and we had a babysitter, so we were able to leave our sleeping toddler for the night and go upstairs! Sadly, not much went on and we called it an early night.  :(

The year I was hanging out with Rooker at the LA Times party, we were talking babies (he had his baby sleeping in the hotel, and my wife was due to have our 2nd baby any moment).  That LA Times a few years back was the last 'big' party I went to since I've had the baby (my wife didn't go into labor until the week after Comic-Con, and had the baby just before midnight of GotG's opening Friday - we had the baby around 11:20ish Thursday night & my older son + I say GotG in theaters Friday am before heading back to the hospital)

The SlamCon party thrown by Todd Stashwick, Brea Grant, Dennis Calero, and Deric Hughes(writer/producer of Arrow, BATB & Warehouse 13) is pretty cool. Open to the public. They haven't announced anything yet but they've had them the past six years on Saturday night (locations vary). There are occasional celeb sightings (other than the hosts); I've seen Chris Hardwick, Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles & Misha Collins there (Jared, Jensen & Misha took pics with fans). I met TWD composer Bear McCreary there once.  I heard Jamie Bamber was there one year, but I didn't see him.

This year I'm on the look out for a party to get my dance and drink on.
Somewhere that plays good music and the dancefloor is busy, not just a posers location.

Any recommendations for ones to shake my ass at? 😁

I wish so much to have any of these stories and experiences. Unfortunately not only am I not that lucky to be invited in but being the type of person who is horribly shy and keeps to self (in fact almost every vacation is just me) so getting connections to anything is rare as well.

I can relate since I have really bad social anxiety. I would feel so out of place at one of these parties.  :-\

Honestly, I think the reason I was let into the Geek & Sundry party last year after they weren't letting people in is that I looked harmless.

They don't really want to let people into VIP parties who are going to bother the VIP's.  Shy is good.
