I think a bunch of us will be at the PN breakfast. We can also exchange numbers to meet up during the con.

Oh yeah! And looking forward to meeting people at SDCC. I'll have a few things to give out, maybe at PN breakfast? It looks like everyone from last year has renewed which is awesome.

[member=5785]Legend_of_Melda[/member] had also asked earlier, and I've got your name down. If there's enough demand we can run 2 leagues and maybe bring in the end date a bit to have a grand championship. If anyone else is interested please post in this thread or send me a note.

For sure. Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Also, who was first and who was last this past year? There are garage sales every weekend, so I can start looking for their prizes :)

For everyone who participated in FoCC FF 2015, please let me and/or ComicConDad know if you are attending the PM breakfast? We are currently putting together the prizes. We had 12 teams. 1 auto team. 1 person who isn't part of FoCC. Can someone let me know who is missing?

The Gronk team was a non FoCCI member. I had asked him at the last second when it looked like we were going to be one short. In retrospect, I wish I had left things alone. If you have a first place prize you would like me to deliver to him, I can do that. He's a geek like us, but he doesn't attend SDCC. I will be at the breakfast on Wednesday.

I appreciate you having him join, iirc, we were one short of having an even number so it was great he joined. Then we had a late signup that made us odd again and had to add a fake team but we didn't know that would happen.

We'll give you the prize at the breakfast, of course whether or not you give it to your friend is all up to you :)

I am in for 2016, but can't make it to either of the meetups unfortunately.  I only drive into SD on Wed and on Sunday I'm usually in the Talkback panel and gone after.  I'd love to connect with anyone from the forum though and have my trusty phone at my side.  I'll PM my number to the commish in case anyone wants to meet up and lament the addition of Mickey's friend (no one more so than me!). Curse you Gronkowski!  I'll get you next year and your little Brady too!

I need to go back through the old thread, a few people have asked and I want to go in order. It's looking like we'll just have a single spot open, but if there's enough interest maybe we could have 2 leagues?

There is a 2nd place prize with your name on it, it may even by useful for the drive back home! (It's not a new car.) Looking forward to meeting as much of the league as possible, it's just so much easier to trash-talk people once you've met them.

I was looking at our fantasy football setup and I wanna say something. I'm gonna put it out there; if you like it, you can take it, if you don't, send it right back :)

- We give 0.25 per completion, should we also give something per reception? Maybe 0.50?
- Since teams don't run as often, instead of 2 RB, what if we went with 1 RB 3WR 1TE 1Flex or 1 RB 2WR 1TE 2 Flex?
- Maybe we could include defensive players this year? Either just one player any position or 1DL, 1DB, 1LB? (Or we could go insane and choose 1 for each defensive position lol.)

Title: Re: FoCC Fantasy Football league 2016
Post by: MickeyJack on August 03, 2016, 12:45:44 PM
Just my two cents: I'd say let's wait on individual defensive players. I think that the per rush and per reception should be worth the same amount.

I'm in an IDP league and it's a lot of fun, but does get too complicated for most people.

I'm all for a PPR setup.
Title: Re: FoCC Fantasy Football league 2016
Post by: Car_Low on August 04, 2016, 12:31:58 AM
I'm up for whatever. IDP sounds fun i think we had that a couple years ago for the forum league before this one was made. Did we set a draft date yet?
Title: Re: FoCC Fantasy Football league 2016
Post by: Mario Wario on August 04, 2016, 10:22:01 AM
If I was all of you, do PPR (0.5). It makes things so much better, just keep it at 0.5.

(I know you are full but if you ever get a free spot, let me know.)
Title: Re: FoCC Fantasy Football league 2016
Post by: retired on August 04, 2016, 11:10:12 AM
I just don't want a big emphasis on any one position. too many points and you only have a few running backs that receive the ball vs just running it, and it makes it unfair to those few teams who get lucky and can draft those few RB's. though I guess the same arguments can be made for the few amazing tight ends, vs the mediocre. I'm also not a fan of changing from the normal team makeup (qb,wr,wr,rb,rb,te,def,k) but that's just my preference. I don't want to have to come up with a whole different draft sheet or strategy just for this league, when I have several others to prepare for.

All this coming from the guy who got last... lol. :'(
Title: Re: FoCC Fantasy Football league 2016
Post by: mark on August 04, 2016, 11:51:18 AM
I need to go through the older thread and PM the people that had expressed an interest. Hopefully we can fill up 2 leagues, then we can put some of these things to a vote and schedule the draft. Anyone else that would like to participate, please let me know!

The settings we have now usually average out to a QB = 2 (RB or WR), the 0.25 per completion helps with that,  and an RB roughly the same as a WR, but with a higher floor for the RB and less variance.  The reason I like the RB,RB,WR,WR,FLEX setup is that it lets you have a bit more control week by week how aggressive or conservative you want to be.

I'm fine with PPR, though I agree with jopari about the potential to make a few players even more OP. (This coming from the second-to-last person :) )

I'm less in favor of IDP, though like others I am in an IDP league. I really prefer having just the DST spot.

Is there an ability to mak Flex include TE too?
Title: Re: FoCC Fantasy Football league 2016
Post by: dcuodust on August 04, 2016, 04:30:30 PM
I am good with whatever. I was just throwing some ideas out there. This is the only fantasy football I take part in. Comiccondad having explained the rationale for 0.25 per completion, I take back the PPR recommendation - it would make Brown and Jones OP and dink and dunk receivers who aren't actually all that effective would become much more valuable.

There is, you can have an RB/WR/TE flex. In leagues I've been in that had one, was rare to see anyone use a TE there, but there were times when it was a nice safety valve when you had a lot of injuries or players on bye.

Yes, during the depths of bye weeks having that Greg Olsen/ Antonio Gates option in my dynasty league saved my butt more than once (said the third lowest team in this league).

Done!

Also, I would like to welcome [member=5427]jclemy[/member] to the league, replacing the robo-team we used last year, the one that beat me and jopari.

I have also PM'd 5 good people who had expressed an interest to see if we can get a 2nd league going. My son will play too if needed, (you don't want to go up against my daughter.) So we need more people, please let me know if you are interested.

Yep! I think it probably made a team for me automatically when I created it but I can deal with that later, will most likely transfer it to my son. Depending how how many people we get we can discuss if anyone wants to move if we need to do 10 and 10 or if we do multiple teams, etc.

Let's go with the 3rd for now. Please let me know if there are times that work best or if the 3rd is out of the question for anyone. We can probably make the same time work for both leagues.

Also [member=2170]larry999[/member] , I thought you had renewed in the league but now yahoo is showing you haven't.

We need more folks in the Otter league. Beg, steal, spam, etc. :) If you've never done FF before this is a great place to start. Knowledge of football is not a prerequisite, a squirrel with some D&D dice could have beaten me last year.

The draft is like an hour. But you can rank your players anytime and set it to auto-draft. Also, you can leave the draft at anytime and it will auto-draft the rest of the way based on your rankings.

Of course! I have been in many a league where a first time player won. One of the most time consuming parts is actually the draft, though you can always autodraft. You can limit the time to something like 15 minutes a week if you really want to, or you can spend hours and hours. Basically you need to fix your lineups before the games, make sure nobody is injured or on a bye, and then occasionally try to pick up new players as the season goes on.

Fantasy is more fun when everyone enjoys themselves. You'll find yourself cheering and watching teams you used to only have a passing interest in.

Sep. 3rd might not work, since I have a Coldplay concert at Levi's Stadium, thus traveling that day and Sunday to get back home. Monday be best since it is Labor Day (in the United States if any international folks are playing), or maybe late Sunday PST could work.

(I'm in the Otter League.)

FANTASY FOOTBALL 2016 KICKOFF POST!!!1!

Finally wrapped up a big project with work, so now I can focus on really important things, like Fantasy Football! Family too I guess, they're probably around here somewhere ... anyhoo

Jason was the first winner of the FoCC Fantasy Football Booster Gold Award, for showing skill best explained by an advanced knowledge of the sport, and perhaps time travel. Jason was not at SDCC but his friend [member=2125]mickeyjack3[/member] was, and here's his picture with the 2015 prize pack, (that light in the photo doesn't mean I took a crappy picture, it's mickeyjack3 basking in his friend's reflected glow)

Jason's team name was Gronk ♥ Puny Brady, so he gets a Gronk Pop and a Lego Brady to have and to hold forever. He also gets our official traveling prize, a Funko Iron Throne that will next go to 2016's overall winner, presumably after being modified in some manner by Jason.

Congratulations to Jason! And we hope your got your prizes, for all we know mickeyjack3 has the Iron Throne holding his beer and is using Gronk as a garden gnome.

[member=2988]shavri[/member] gets our 2nd place prize, a brand new NFL Country CD! I was supposed to think of a clever comic book name for 2nd place, but I never got around to it. (Seriously, I am looking at a post-it note right now that says, "Think of a clever comic book name for 2nd place.")

Congratulations to shavri as well! We look forward to her article on the relative musical merits of Terry Bradshaw versus Troy Aikman.

Skipping down the line to 12th place, congratulations to [member=1233]jopari[/member] , the first winner of the FoCC FF Bizarro Award! jopari received a custom homage to the Lombardi trophy, lovingly handcrafted by [member=3906]dcuodust[/member] and, as required by Canadian export law, festooned in Justin Bieber stickers.

jopari, (obviously overcome by emotion in that last pic,)  also gets a special comic to keep, an Earth Shattering Disasters DC Special, and special loan of our traveling last place prize, the book "How To Change Your Name." This book will go to 2016's overall last place finisher, again after being modified in some way by jopari, perhaps some kind words of encouragement? Inspirational haikus?

Thanks to everyone that participated, and to dcuodust for the cool giveaways. We still need either 2 or 4 more people to sign up for this year!

couple of newbie questions.....

i need to pick a team name.....?  ??? yikes

how many players does each ff team draft?  I see 14 slots but i thought teams had 44 or so.  what happens if someone gets hurt?

Is there really a thing called auto-draft?  If so how can i do that?

If anyone has ever considered trying FF, now is the time.  If folks are willing to accept me & answer my newbie questions ... folks can be assured it will be a friendly league all tho, i've heard there might be some trash talking  >:D
Title: Re: FoCC Fantasy Football league 2016
Post by: jclemy on August 28, 2016, 05:54:10 PM
You'll only be picking players that will be playing that week and you can trade throughout the week (before the games start).

Sometimes your players will get hurt but typically you have some players on the bench (where you can put someone valuable you think will heal).

Auto draft is just pre setting your ranking for the players you think will be best. You can go on and rank but you have to go pretty deep with the rankings to choose in late rounds.

Hope that helps!

What to expect? (For FFnewbs  :)  and for anyone out there who is thinking about joining )

First off, FF is really popular, last year an estimated 57 million people played FF. If that was a country it would be close to Italy in population. I have a family league where this year the ages will range between 11 and 60+. The person who won last year hardly knows anything about football and the person with actual coaching experience came in 2nd to last. So, while there's a little bit to learn, don't be intimidated, you can make it work and have fun without spending a lot of time or going overboard with analysis.

The basics:

Your team will have a quarterback, 2 running backs, 2 wide receivers, a tight end, a kicker and a "player" that represents the defense/special teams for an NFL team. There is also a "Flex" position where you can use an RB, WR or TE. Plus you get a bench where you can have 6 extra players.

Players score points for you by gaining yards, making touchdowns, kicking field goals, etc. They can lose you points by fumbling, throwing interceptions, losing yards, and so forth. The Defense/Special teams works a bit differently, they start off with 10 points and then lose some the more the team they are playing against scores. They can make points with things like sacks, interceptions, touchdowns, ...

You make your initial team during the draft. If you do not log on for the draft then yahoo will autopick for you. You can also enable autopick during the draft. The draft can take a while, depending how fast people do their picks. You can make your own rankings if you want, yahoo will provide default rankings.

To play, you just set your line up before the games. There are many sites out there that will give advice.

Otherwise the main strategic element is picking up new players during the season. Once a game starts, any players in that game that aren't already on someone's team will go on "waivers." If you decide you want to try for one of these players you put in a claim, indicating which of your current players you want to drop. (Other people will be doing the same thing but you won't know who is going for what.) Late Tuesday night, these waiver claims will be processed in order of people's waiver priority. This priority starts off as the reverse of your draft order, and when you use it you go back to the end of the line. After the waiver claims are handled, any players still not on teams become free agents, and you can pick those up whenever, without changing your waiver priority.

Players you drop from your team also go into waivers, basically this gives other people a chance to try and pick them up if they want. You can also offer to trade players with someone else in the league, everyone sees these and has a chance to weigh in.

So if you want to keep time minimal, you're looking at a few minutes before games start to check your lineup, a little time Tuesday to see if you want to try and pick up new players. And maybe some other checks throughout the week for news and to see if anyone else dropped a player you might like. (A search for fantasy football waiver, sleepers, rankings, etc. will give you tons of advice. Just make certain you look for recent results.)

FF advice for [member=1]alyssa[/member]:

1) I have never won a fantasy football pool. I played a lot from the late-90s to mid-00s. Not only have I never won, I don't believe I have actually come close to winning.

2) Choose a good team name. Right now your team name is alyssa's Team. That is poop.

3) It's a snake draft. The order reverses every round. So the person with the 1st pick, chooses 1st in odd numbered rounds and last in even numbered round. In a 12-team draft I like picking 6th or 7th since there are only 12 picks between your turns. If I can't have 6 or 7, I prefer being 1st or 12th because I get to select two players at the same time, i.e. 1st picks 1, 24, 25, 48, 49, etc. and 12th picks 12, 13, 36, 37, etc. The problem with picking on the ends is that if there is a run on a position, say everyone starts taking QBs, you have to wait 22 picks.

4) You won't win or lose the draft in the first couple of rounds. For example, last year I took Antonio Brown with the 3rd overall pick. He was the top receiver. I finished in the losers bracket.

5) If you autodraft, Yahoo preranks the players for you. If you want to change the rankings, go to Draft, then Pre-Draft Rankings, and select Edit My Pre-Draft Player Rankings.

6) Accept all trades that I propose to you.

7) Understand our league's scoring system. We don't give points for receptions, we give 0.25 points for every pass completion, and we give 3 points if your player reaches 100 yards rushing or receiving or 300 yards passing. For example, Cam Newton is not the runaway best QB in our league. He still scored the most points of any QB, but because he doesn't pass as much as Brady or Brees, he scores lower for completions and he doesn't hit 300 yards. That allows them to close the distance. Generally, the 3 points make our league a bit more top heavy. For example, the top receivers are extra valuable in our league because they are consistently getting those 3 extra points for hitting 100 yards in addition to getting the most yards and TDs. If you go to Players, then Player List, you can see how the players performed last year and what the projections are for this year.

8. The easiest draft strategy for new players is keeping it simple and taking the best player available regardless of position.

9) Remember to set your lineup every week. It takes 5-10 minutes.

We still need 2 more folks, I know you're out there! If need be I can have my daughter make a team, but that won't be fair to, well, to any of us. Please give the rest of us a chance.

Some changes this year:

1. Decreasing the draft pick time to 60 seconds. If anyone feels strongly about this let me know. Though if Maindrian Pace can steal a car in that time, you can pick a running back. (Apologies to any Memphis Raines fans, but it's old school time.)

2. I posted this in yahoo already, but ending the season at week 16 to avoid the week 17 weirdness.

3. For the recaps this year, going to do something different.  I'll pick someone each week, (not saying how in advance but the reasons will be good ones,) and they will get to choose the style, genre, etc. that the recap is to be written in. This is purely self-serving. It can be difficult sometimes to motivate for the recaps, especially when I just got my butt handed to me, but if you tell me to write the recap like a Star Trek captain's log, or like an Agatha Christie detective who is also drunk, well then, instant inspiration! Just nothing too overly Oulipo. (And if anyone wants to guest-write a recap, just holler.)

Who didn't return this year leaving us with an odd number? Come on people!!! It's worth it for the recaps alone!

You may draft in the manner of your choosing, wearing any socks whatsoever. Though if you are lucky enough to nab one of the top 3 WRs, I think some amount of genuflection to the Fantasy gods would be appropriate.

Still need [member=2170]larry999[/member] to renew. If need be I'll take his team over and have it autodraft, he did say he was going to participate again this year.

I hear you, have 5 drafts all in the next 2 days. Kind of a thin year at WR and RB and already so much drama at QB, will be interesting.

Still 2 more spots in the Otter League, grab them now ! :)

Maybe change from 12 teams to 10? Or can we no longer do that?

Mel has a friend who is going to be the 12th in one league. That basically leaves us 1 short for the other (otter.) I'll make an autodraft team if I need to and hopefully larry999 will come back and take it over, or someone else.

We have our 12 for today's draft! I've finalized the teams and draft positions should be up by 4:30 Pacific. (From yahoo, "Order of selection will be randomly determined approximately 30 minutes before the start of the draft.")

Still room in the league drafting tomorrow for 1 or 2 more people! A chance at prizes! The admiration of your peers! The opportunity to crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, etc. etc. ...

After ranking the top-6 players, I have no clue who I am taking lol. And this year, there are guys who I don't want because I don't trust them, but the value they provide at a particular spot would make it difficult to pass on them.

I've got A.J. Green at number 7, but that's all I'm telling you ;) I'm in a draft right now, and someone picked Derrick Henry at #10. THen they picked up Romo for QB, so maybe they are employing the hit-teh-sauce-early strategy.

Green is solid. He's safe to get close to 1300 and 10. (Though 7 may be a tad high for me.) A guy like Allen Robinson is difficult to figure out.

I hate 11th. I'd rather have 12th. Every time bloody time I'll have to decide between two players, and Mark will take the other one. And in the first round I'll have a dilemma between 3-players, and Mark will take the two I didn't take.

Draft Summary:
1) Mel got the first pick and selected Antonio Brown.
2) Mark had the last pick and selected Dan Bailey. (He wanted to select a RB but there were none left because he had already selected all of them.)
3) According to Yahoo, Mel had the best draft.
4) I was happy with my first two picks, Miller at 11 and Green at 14.
5) I had four sleepers: Gordon, Henry, Abdullah, and Torrey Smith. The first two were everyone's sleepers, so I guess they don't count. I missed on Abdullah, but I got Smith. (I figure he's the best deep threat on a bad team that will be playing from behind.)
6) Mark kept selecting the RBs I wanted in the later rounds of the draft. (He got back-to-back picks on the turn after and then before me. The obvious question is: "Well if he kept drafting RBs, why didn't you realize that and select them?" The obvious response is: "Because I didn't think he'd keep drafting RBs!")
7) Best picks: Mel getting Ingram and Cooks at 24 & 25, Mark getting Langford, Abdullah, Ware in the 7th, 10th, 12th rounds, Crane getting Dez in the 3rd round, Funko getting Charles in the 4th round, Bells getting Hyde in the 4th round round, and NERD taking a chance on Gordon and Brady in the middle-rounds, the former could and the latter most likely will finish in the top-5 for FP/game at their positions.
8. Worst picks (mine): Taking Cobb in the 4th over Charles and Hyde (I got nervous about their injuries, am bullish on Cobb, and figured I was getting Henry and/or Abdullah as a sleepers later) and taking a K & DEF in the 5th & 6th rounds.
9) Four of my starters have a week 9 bye and 2 of my 3 RBs have a week 4 bye.
10) Best team name: It's Enrico Palazzo! Runner-up: Green Eggs and Cam.
11) In addition to all the RBs, Mark drafted half of the Jaguars roster so during their bye week he will not be fielding a team.

How funny, I was stuck near the border during draft and had to turn my phone off due to roaming. I got first pick and wasn't even there to do it.
Title: Re: FoCC Fantasy Football league 2016
Post by: mark on September 05, 2016, 09:36:20 AM
What happened with me was the QBs and TEs I had an eye on went way sooner than I would have taken them, so every time it was my turn there were these wonderful RBs and WRs just sitting there at the top of my rankings, I couldn't help it. (The description of my RB greed is true through a little misleading, I took just one fewer WR :) )

Some trading might be in order, since I don't have a backup QB or TE and the ones I have both have a week 5 bye.

Still time for 1 or 2 more people to get in on the action, just let me know before 3:30 Pacific time today or sign up at

Phew! busy day. Both drafts went well, as well as they ever do.) Glad to have so many new people on board this season and I can already tell that it will be GLORIOUS. I just don't know for whom.

If you auto-drafted and things went wrong, or if you self-drafted and you went wrong, undrafted players should be now be free agents so you can make adjustments. The first game is Thursday, Carolina versus the Broncos. That's a bit under 66 hours from now, so we have a nice relaxing stretch before everything goes wrong.

This won't always be announced in advance, but the style of the Week 1 recaps will be determined by the team who has the highest scoring kicker.

And for anyone who still wants to play, we have 2 teams that can be taken over. (Two pretty strong teams as it turns out, was a pretty good year for autodraft.) Just let me know.

When you look at your team, you'll see the times that the players have their games. Once that time hits you can't add or remove those players from your lineup. (You can change players whose games are in the future.) This week your only Thursday player is your kicker, so you have until Sunday to do the rest of your lineup.
Title: Re: FoCC Fantasy Football league 2016
Post by: mark on September 06, 2016, 07:38:29 AM
If you want to change your line up, go to your team page and there will be blue buttons at the left for each player. If you click on one, (or elsewhere on the row,) you will see other rows become highlighted. Clicking on one of these rows will do a swap. The little boxes to the left of the player names will be yellow or orange if there is news about the player, you'll will also see if they are questionable to play this week, suspended, etc.

If you are using the mobile app there's a similar interface.

Looking at your lineup, I would probably keep it as is for week 1. (There is no shortage of advice and weekly rankings on the webs if you want a 2nd, 3rd, ..., 100th opinion :) )

Jay's team

I helped my son draft yesterday.  I gave him 3-4 choices when his time came up and since we were first and had the back to back picks it typically worked out pretty well. But we had a good time drafting and I was happy he was asking a ton of questions.

Kudos for the 2 leagues Mark!

Not even a game into the season and I've had 3 team names already for my Otter League squad.   From "12% of a plan" to "I Am Gronk" to "Golden Tate Warriors".

Every season I tell myself to play in less leagues the next year but yet again, I find myself playing in 4.   2 of them drafted yesterday so I feel like I may need to create a spreadsheet to keep track of all the rosters.   Very relieved that none of them have Eddie Lacy so he can no longer curse my teams.

I'm hoping for a rebound year from him. In one league I picked Lacy and Jamaal Charles with handcuff Spencer Ware. So actually i'm hoping for 2 rebound years! Oh and Josh Gordon too. LoL

I don't doubt Lacy's talent BUT the concussions and the in/out of the lineup the past two seasons have killed me as I spent high picks on him.   Plus no matter what, GB with Rodgers is never going to be run-centric but even when they do run in the red zone, Lacy doesn't get those carries.

Josh Gordon really burned me 2 years ago as I held onto him all season long in hopes that he could help spur a playoff run.   That never happened and I was a bit weak at WR.

I do hope Jamaal Charles has a lot left in the tank as I got him in an auction league along with Leveon Bell.

First game is tonight! So check your lineups if you have any Carolina or Denver players on your roster.

For the recaps, it occured to me that I had better change the timing if I am to get them done in a timely fashion, so best kicker will get to choose week 2's theme. This week's choice goes to [member=2226]Mel[/member] for having the only A+ draft according to yahoo. Some may say that's just because she had the first spot and was afk so yahoo picked for her, and you'd be absolutely correct.

But Mel still gets to choose the manner in which the Week 1 recaps will be written, all I'll say is "Don't waste my time."  >:D

(Btw, I don't care much about team names, up to the person, but this one should be changed; "Anton Yelchin's Jeep" is not cool. -_- )

Agreed. There was a bit of a mix up, an invite was sent to a player's friend, but there was a phone mixup and somebody else ended up getting the team. I've taken it over and reverted the name and roster changes. I'll resend the invite to the original intended recipient after I can confirm.

(Meanwhile Kelvin Benjamin off to a great start ... on my bench.)

some basic questions for next week

the only players who are 'playing' are the top 7 ? the ones highlight? If so then i can swap out any of the lower players for someone i dislike?  same position etc
If i don't like anyone I have on my roster then i can look to see if someone is a free agent? or trade?  but then i'd have to drop a player?

do i have it right?

Yeah the top 7 and the K and DST are your starters and you can swap out based on position. If you want to acquire a player from free agency, after you click the green plus (+), you will be asked to drop a player.

Ton of close games in week 1, and some surprises.

If you didn't see the Rams-49ers game last night, and it was on pretty late, you may have missed this

I would call it the play of the week if not for the Raiders gutsy 2 pt conversion to beat the Saints at home.

[member=2226]Mel[/member] had the high score of the week, just squeaking by @dcuodust and yours truly. If you had a bad week don't get discouraged! If you had a good one, that's great kid, don't get cocky!

Get those waiver wire claims in if you want, and please stop sending me trade requests that try to give me even more RBs :)

Dragnet themed recap forthcoming ... bummm ba BUM bumm

I typically don't watch Monday night football, but I caught the end of the Steelers-Washington and I watched the entirety of the Rams-49ers in bed on my tablet. What an awful football game the latter was. The Rams are horrible.

Your team is rather impressive. You have three Number 1 WRs who all play with elite QBs for passing teams and one of the most consistent RBs.

I fell asleep during that SF/LA game and mind you, I'm a Lambs fan.    Wouldn't mind sending them back to St. Louis honestly...only Alex Smith would love that 5 yard offense and Fisher should've been gone years ago.   Tavon Austin should not be a full time player on offense at all...it's gonna be a really long season...

It'll be a long season in the Otter League for me if Gronk doesn't start playing soon.

General recap note. I think the Jaynestown Mudders and Woodbury Walkers are forum members but I'm not sure who. Let me know :) I think one of them is [member=412]tk415650[/member] ? Also, I haven't met everyone, and at some point I'll probably get a gender mixed up or make some other mistake. Just let me know if I do.

Also, I don't want to hog all of the fun, so if anyone wants to do a recap let me know!

DRAGNET - THE DOCUMENTED DRAMA OF AN ACUTAL CRIME, INVESTIGATED AND SOLVED BY THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO UNRELENTINGLY STAND WATCH ON THE SECURITY OF YOUR HOME, YOUR FAMILY, AND YOUR LIFE.

FOR THE NEXT FEW MINUTES, IN COOPERATION WITH THE LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT, YOU WILL TRAVEL STEP BY STEP ON THE SIDE OF THE LAW THROUGH AN ACTUAL CASE FROM OFFICIAL POLICE FILES. FROM BEGINNING TO END. DRAGNET IS THE STORY OF YOUR POLICE FORCE IN ACTION!

***********************************************

It was Tuesday, September 13th. It was overcast in Los Angeles. I was working the day watch out of robbery. My partner's [member=1233]jopari[/member]. The boss is [member=2143]Mel.I.Am[/member], Chief of Detectives. My name's Palazzo.

It was 10:45 AM when I got to room 27A. Robbery detail. I was late. The Chief was waiting by my desk, angrier than usual. He was with a lady I didn't know.

   - Palazzo! Where've you been?

   - Sorry Chief. Had a blowout on the way to the station.

   - Big blowout?

   - Pretty big. Took out a whole patch of Bellsprouts.

   - Anybody hurt?

   - No. But there's a few gates that don't look so good.

   - Don't let it happen again. Have you heard about Jopari yet?

   - Can't say that I have. What's he up to?

   - He's in the hospital. Was helping Detective Jason with a missing person case, Jason lights up one of those Deangelo cigars and starts a fire right there in the car. Jason's fine but Jopari got burnt pretty bad.

   - That's tough Chief. What about the missing person?

   - Fellow named Barnidge. Had some kind of big event on Sunday and didn't show up. But that's not your concern. This is the fourth officer I've lost to smoking this month. There's gonna be some new rules around here. From now on, only candy cigarettes. There's a case of Hellions on your desk.

   - That's not so bad.

   - And another thing, until Jopari's back on his feet you'll be working with [member=2226]Mel[/member] here. Just transferred from New Orleans.

   - Hello Mel. I'm Palazzo. Anything come in yet this morning?

   - Strangest thing. Guy comes in, tells the desk sergeant that a con man robbed him last night. Desk sergeant starts taking a statement but then the man bolts, makes a straightline right for the door. Nobody's seen him since.

   - We get a name and description?

   - Got it written down here. Isaac Lime. Seven feet tall, big white mustache, otherwise green from head to toe. I guess a person like that shouldn't be too hard to find?

   - Think so? You are new to Los Angeles. Let's get lunch.

It was 11:53 when we got to [member=2988]shavri[/member] 's diner. The weather was clearing up. Downtown traffic was bad as usual.

   - The Chief always that upset?

   - Sometimes. Not like today. Lost big at the races on Sunday. Bet on a lock named Beckham, didn't even make it on the board. Long shot named [member=2125]mickeyjack3[/member] won instead. Folks say they never saw a horse run that fast, much less a maiden. How's that Big Ben Burger? As good as they make in New Orleans?

   - It's ok. Bit heavy. And no, no, Shavri just can't beat the New Orleans cooks.

At 1:03 we headed to the statistician's office.

   - Hello [member=13]Carlo[/member], this is Mel, she's new in town.

   - Nice to meet you, Mel. What can I do for you?

   - Here's a name. Can you get on the IBM, come up with a list of possible associates?

   - You got it. This new IBM is swell, I even used it to finally beat that Crane fellow at Camasta.

   - Don't you mean Canasta?

   - Isn't that what I said? Sorry, I just get so excited. here's the list you wanted.

   - Let's see. Gavin Conscience, [member=5544]Deathbyjackal[/member] , [member=819]brand4d2[/member] , Emily Problems, Jay Melson, @alyssa ... That's a bad bunch. Reads like a Folsom Prison dance card. At least we know where to find them.

   - Good luck Palazzo, Mel. I better get back to my Canasta program.

   - Thanks Carlo, you take it easy. If you're talking about Crane from the bunco squad, remember they call him the [member=414]karatekid[/member] .

We stopped by my desk for a fresh pack of Hellions and headed back downtown. The sun had come out. It was 3:27 when we got to our next stop.

   - Your first day in Los Angeles and you get to go to the roughest place in town.

   - The Otter Club?

   - Don't let the name fool you. The only thing cute in there will be the answers they give us. Let's go in. That's Alyssa at the bar, she runs the place.

   - What do you two want?

   - We'd like to talk to you a minute.

   - Talk. We don't sell that here. You want a drink?

   - No thanks, I said we wanted to talk. Just a few questions.

   - What is this? What's all this routine? I'm no hood you 2-bit cops. Coming in here and disrupting an honest business.

   - We're looking for Isaac Lime. Tall, green colored fellow.

   - Never heard of him. And I'm color blind.

   - Is that right, maybe we should ask around?

   - Go ahead, they're color blind too. You square jaws, stinking up my place with your cheap cigarettes. I've got allergies you know, I oughta call the papers, tell them about you coming in here just to make me suffer.

   - Hey now, easy, these are candy cigarettes.

   - Candy cigarettes?

   - Yeah. Why don't you settle down and try one?

   - Wow, that's pretty good! Won't sell here though. This is a [member=2389]Mario Wario[/member] crowd.

   - We were asking about Isaac Lime?

   - Sure I know him. New in town. Comes in sometimes to play cards.

   - He lose a lot recently? Get upset about it?

   - Who knows? People come in here all the time. Half of them win, half of them lose. Deathbyjackal over there just walked all over Woodbury. Gavin Conscience had a run of luck aginst Brand4d2. Emily Problems got gored by Jay Melson. Heck, even Jaynestown here just iced me, him and his stupid hat. Nobody makes a fuss about it. You just play again. Though come to think of it, that Lime fellow did run out in a hurry.

   - Fair enough. You know anything about a con man?

   - Con man? You mean [member=846]rando[/member] . Over at that booth, sleeping one off.

We took Rando to the station. Once we got some coffee in him he started talking. It was 5:28 PM.

   - So you're a con man?

   - That's right. Have a card. I've got plenty.

It was a business card. "Con Man Incorporated, 39 Woodhead Lane."

   - Since when do you criminals have business cards? You're going to make our job too easy.

   - No, no. Not that kind of con man. It's a new kind of business! People will come from all over. There'll be famous actors and you can sit in rooms and talk about movies and radio programs! You can even dress up like people in comic books, like the Spirit, or Wonder Woman, or even the Ringo Kid!

   - Uh-huh. That's the craziest thing I ever heard. Let's go through it again.

After 5 hours of interrogation he stuck to his story. We weren't getting anywhere.

   - So how about Isaac Lime, he in on this scheme too?

   - Lime? I don't think so. I barely know him.

   - When did you last see him?

   - Monday night I guess. We were playing cards pretty late, looked like he was going to win, then I had a lucky break at the end. He ran off after that. Seemed upset.

   - Any idea where to find him?

   - Works at Gurley's I think.

We left Rando at the station. Maybe the Chief could get a straight story out of him. We headed to Gurley's Lounge. It was 11:03 PM. Traffic was a little better.

   - Look, Mel. There at the piano.

   - Tall. Green. White mustache. Looks like our guy.

He wasn't going anywhere. We waited for the set to finish and then sat with him at a table. Gave him a candy cigarette.

   - I didn't know that last song you played, you write it?

   - Me? No, no. It's called "I Dropped the Ball," by Kirk Cousins and the Interceptors.

   - You always play such sad music?

   - Lately I guess. I suppose this is about the police station?

   - That's it. Why'd you do it?

   - Things were rough in St. Louis, losing all the time, so I moved here, to Los Angeles. Things were finally going my way, got a line on an easy game, and I was sure I'd get a win. When the game took such a bad turn, I went crazy I suppose. Next thing I know I'm at the station. I guess you know the rest.

We left Mr. Lime at the lounge and headed back.

   - So we're not going to charge him with anything? Wasting all our time like that?

   - No, not this time. He's suffered enough. Besides, if bad luck and a tough story was a crime, we'd have to lock up half of Los Angeles.

THE END

***********************************************

If you enjoyed this week's production of the Fantasy Football RECAP, tune in next week! And see whatever the heck Deathbyjackal has me do.

That looks like way too much effort lol. Good job on the recap. Yeah (low)barnaige was a flop.

Hopefully devontee Freeman steps it up, kinda relying on my RB'S to all do great so I can trade for better WR's and a reciever later in the season.

With how this week started, I think I'll need the distraction. Not a good week to be up against Matt Forte. But the recap was really quite fun, especially after spending most of the week writing technical documentation and commenting code, ugh.

All the old radio broadcasts of Dragnet are at https://archive.org/details/OTRR_Dragnet_Singles (https://archive.org/details/OTRR_Dragnet_Singles) and I will never regret spending a few long commutes listening to some. The hardest part is not mimicking them, there's such a strong and consistent style. You can find the TV episodes online as well. Some of them still play well today.

[member=5544]Deathbyjackal[/member] has helped choose next week's style. There's a Ghostbusters Gozer joke in there but it's 16  @!#?@! weeks so I'm saving it. Let's just say the next recap will go where no recap has gone before!

Had the Saints-Giants game on the tablet while doing stuff. Caught the promo for the new Lethal Weapon show on Fox. During the climax of the promo, Mutaugh's wife says to Riggs something along the lines of "Just promise one thing: he returns home to me every night." Riggs responds "Yes ma'am." I laughed and laughed and laughed. What drivel. With so much great TV now on HBO, AMC, et al. this is the s**t that Fox is putting out.

Found both this and Lethal Weapon confusing choices for remakes/adaptations. I heard an interview last week with the writers of the new "TV the Book" book where they make a case for the top 100 American TV series. The Battlestar Galactica remake came up a few times and one of the authors made an interesting observation, that if you remake a good show it's really risky since there's not much room to go up and a lot of room to go down, but if you find a show that had a great idea but wasn't well done in the first place, then it might work out.

Think I'm betting low on MacGyver, they even stuck it on Friday night.

Was getting nervous. Matthews didn't start the game and wasn't having much success. 2 TD's even though he only gained 40 yards, similar to Mike Wallace. My defenses (DEN & CAR), Wallace (I have him in both leagues), Mathews (FoCC team), and my kicker (Tucker in the Otter) saved me this week. My top-4 picks in both leagues underperformed, some big time - Green, Cobb, Ingram.

Random week 2 stuff:
- 600 yards passing in the CIN-PIT game, yet neither Green nor Brown hit 40 receiving.
- Henry was a popular sleeper this year. The thought was he would be Tennessee's lead back. Two games in Murrary has over 200 total yards and 2 TDs.
- Cleveland is bad.
- St. Louis' offense is miserable. They have no one who can get open deep.
- I was reading that Seattle's problem is that they have ignored their offensive line over the years.

Despite being projected to lose in all 4 of my leagues, I actually went 3-1!

It's still early in the season but yet again like last season, it looks like 1st rd RB's may be a disaster, namely Peterson and Gurley...

Which segues into my response to dcuodust's comments about the Lambs offense...it's funny because the local marketing here in Los Angeles has posters of Tavon Austin everywhere across town.    All this for a supposedly "explosive playmaker" who provides that only once or twice a season????   I would've preferred that they not trade up for the 1st pick in the last draft and used their original pick instead on a Corey Coleman or Will Fuller or any of this year's rookie crop of WR's for that matter.   They sure would be helping the team a lot more than a #1 pick QB that's just sitting on the bench.    :(

Several members of the Enterprise crew have begun to exhibit atypical behavior, communicating with each other using words that are mostly familiar, but that make little sense overall. I first noticed this when Ensign Gavin delivered this morning's duty roster. I enquired as to his well-being and he replied, "Chill sir, Jay beat me like a drum this week but I get my bell back in two and then I'll ride the QB garbage time express all the way to bracket-town!"

At first I passed off this incomprehensible exchange to the enthusiasm of youth, but soon after I heard [member=5427]jclemy[/member] and Bellsprout arguing, she claiming luck on his side but he countering that luck had nothing to do with it and if that is what a golden tate is like then he would hate to see a silver one.

My concern grew when I encountered Ensign [member=2226]Mel[/member] admonishing Lieutenant [member=2125]mickeyjack3[/member] , a superior officer no less! Saying that he would need "a bigger bench to hold all of those points", but that he "should be able to afford it since he didn't bother to buy handcuffs."

I recalled a similar problem that had recently happened on Deep Space 9, involving replicators I believe, but when I asked Commander Sisko for more information, he replied with a stream of expletives so profoundly obscene that I am loathe to record them in this official archive.

I have therefore asked Data to investigate the matter, enlisting the services of Dr. Crusher and Lieutenant Commander Troi as needed.

Space.

The final frontier.

These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission, to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilisations, to boldly go where no recap has gone before!

*****************

Enter!

Greetings Captain, I have some preliminary findings regarding the verbal eccentricities recently observed in some of the crew.

Proceed.

Thank you sir. I appears that all those afflicted have been playing a game that had been left on board by the Ferengi Berik. It is called "Fantasy Football," and is based on an obscure sport once popular on Earth. While participants do not play "football" themselves, they virtually align themselves with chosen football players, and receive a score based on how those players perform. Each week, a participant is in competition with another, often another Enterprise crew member but possibly an individual elsewhere in the quadrant.

Football!

Indeed sir, though the primary item in the game was not strictly a ball, nor were feet the dominant means of interaction. It is better described as a prolate spheroid that is typically thrown or carried, but occasionally kicked in certain ritual circumstances. It seems that playing the game renders an individual incapable of speaking about anything else.

I see. It appears similar to our experience with the Tamarians.

Partially, in that much of their speech involves specific characters and their accomplishments, however these are not derived from stories significant to any culture, and have only temporary importance. When the next game is played they will all be replaced with new ones. Still, it does dominate conversation and perplex outsiders. Doctor Crusher examined several participants and, while the game does not appear to be harmful in any way, she did observe anomalous behavior. When Jaynestown was handed a medicinal tribble in an attempt to relax him, he threw it across the sick bay to [member=819]brand4d2[/member] calling out "Go long and prosper!" Upon catching the tribble, brand4d2 threw it forcefully to the floor and performed an unusual dance, apparently called a "twerk." They have been confined to quarters pending psychological evaluation.

Tea. Earl Grey. Hot! (I have a feeling I'll need a lot of it.) So is this game one of chance or of strategy?

Both sir. While there are strategic elements, random events often dominate the outcome. I have multiple examples. Sometimes a match does go as expected, such as Jason's defeat of [member=2143]Mel.I.Am[/member] . But a match predicted to be close may diverge from expectations, as when Emily won over [member=2835]straightline3[/member] despite a nonexistent contribution from something termed a "flex." Despite this uncertainty, victory can embolden the winner. This appears to be the cause of many of the unusual conversations we have observed, known as "trash talk." Consider the instance of a match where [member=13]Carlo[/member] was projected to win, but [member=2988]shavri[/member] was the victor. Hypothetically, if Carlo had expressed prior confidence in a victory, shavri might tell Carlo that he had failed to account for the heteroskedasticity in elements contributing to the score and had in essence enumerated his clutch of domesticated fowls before embryonic viability had been established.

What did Troi have to say?

She has been counseling several participants who were confident in winning their match but who instead lost. For example, [member=1233]jopari[/member] appeared to be winning a match against [member=3906]dcuodust[/member] but lost in the final part of the game. There may be an emotional component that needs to be considered in addition to the linguistic affects. The phrase "Just start your studs" appears to be particularly comforting though it is unclear if it refers to a decorative item, a structural support, or a male horse used primarily for ...

Bridge to Captain Picard! We have a fleet of Klingon starships approaching rapidly!

Acknowledged. Go to yellow alert. I am on my way.

*****************

Captain, we are being hailed by the Klingons.

On screen.

CAPTAIN PICARD! I am [member=5544]Deathbyjackal[/member]  captain of the DzBrYnt! These are my commanders [member=846]rando[/member], Woodbury and markGzRghh, we demand the immediate surrender of [member=1]alyssa[/member] , [member=414]karatekid[/member] , dc2odust and [member=2389]Mario Wario[/member] !

On what grounds!

They were our fantasy football opponents this week and somehow bested us, obviously by cheating.

Klingons playing Fantasy Football? Don't be absurd.

Hah! Fantasy Football is a Klingon sport of long tradition and we will not be humiliated by these newcomers. Surrender them immediately or be destroyed! You have 5 minutes to comply!

The Klingons have broken communication sir, and are preparing for attack. If I may, I had calculated a 68.4% probability of this encounter taking place and preemptively consulted the relevant crew members in order to formulate an appropriate response for you to read.

Hmmmm, you're certain you want this read? And why do I need to read it?

Quite certain sir. We all agreed that everything sounds more impressive when you say it.

Quite so. Hail the Klingons, onscreen!

Captain Picard! It's about time. Are you ready to surrender your crew?

My reply is this: An Antedean picnic has stronger defenses than you played this week, so instead of whining, you had better spend the time before our week 13 rematch playing the waiver wire like a tIngDagh or you'll have to rename your ship the IKR Qa'Hom!

HA! Well said! Perhaps there is a small amount of hope for some of your pathetic crew. We will leave you for now ... but this isn't over.

Captain, the Klingons are departing.

Data, how much longer can we expect this madness to go on?

There appears to be no way to end the game once started sir, but once its 16 week span is ended the crew should recover immediately. In the meantime, they will be able to perform their duties, albeit with an estimated 14.8% drop in productivity.

Fine. And where is Commander Riker? He's not involved in this is he?

No sir. Though he was using the replicators to make something called a "pom-pom" and activated a holodeck simulation I am not familiar with. Involving something called "cheerleaders." I can bring the holodeck session onscreen if you like. Computer ...

NO! I mean, no, no thank you Data. I'm just going to go back to my tea.

Thanks to Deathbyjackal for choosing the theme, and congratulations to the week 2 winners! Good luck in week 3!

Blount had a massive game last night. I only caught the tail end of the game but it was crazy, I don't think anybody except Belichick expected it to go the way it did. C'est LeGarrette.

Choice of the week 3 recappage goes to [member=2143]Mel.I.Am[/member] for demonstrating patience and loyalty by keeping 2 suspended players on his roster. (There's another such person but I flipped a coin.)

NERD MACHINE 4 Life is beating me 138.92. - 47.00. Ryan Mathews put up a magnificent -0.50 points for me this week. Fear not: as long as Drew Brees completes 87 passes for 811 yards and 11 TDs, I can eke out a 139.78 - 138.92 victory...

No Rams rant from me this week because they actually played a quality game on both sides of the ball.

This encapsulates how crazy a game fantasy football is - in Otter League, I'm very bad at 1-2.   Even worse in a league I run with an 0-3 record.   However, I also have two other teams that are 3-0 and one of them gets Leveon Bell back next week.   All 4 teams have Tevin Coleman and 1 has Devonta Freeman so it's interesting how their huge games last night helped me in 2 leagues but were not enough to overcome huge deficits in the other 2.

Lot of waiver wire action! Watch your line ups, bye weeks have started, Packers and Eagles this week. There's also the first London game, Colts versus the Jaguars, at 6:30 AM Pacific, 9:30 Eastern. How do our British friends get up so early?

Now for some general words of inspiration  :-\

Week 3 Recap!  Pokémon GO !!!

**************************************************

Research Office Z, Northern Clefairnia

Field Report #A312

Submitted this 29th of Voltorber, 46 AP

***************

In our continuing efforts to uncover the history of the early Niantic era, we are pleased to announce the discovery of archival material describing an event long thought to be fiction, The Battle of the Three Gyms. While a final report will require months of further investigation and verification, the cultural importance of this event and its significance in the teachings of the Church of Pikachu have led us to file these preliminary details, albeit in cursory form.

Although most records from this time were lost in the utter devastation of the Jiggypuff wars, it has been established that in the brief period of time between the introduction of Pokémon GO and the complete reorganization of society around Pokémon principles, governments made a number of ineffectual attempts to halt this progress. The most famous being the introduction of laws requiring PokéGyms to be a specified distance away from the cornerstones of these primitive cultures: schools, churches and establishments serving alcohol. We have uncovered evidence of an instance where 3 different 8-level gyms were moved to the same location, resulting in an extreme violation of Pokéli's exclusion principle. Since each gym was controlled by one of the 3 original PokéTeams, it was decided to allow a grand battle between all 3 teams and have the winners establish the 4th ever PokéTeam, Team Fantasy.

We have been able to identify the participants in the Battle of the Three Gyms, many of whom you will recognize from legendary events such as the Moving of the Snorlax and the Magikarp Accords.

Team Instinct   -   [member=414]karatekid[/member] [member=819]brand4d2[/member] mark [member=846]rando[/member] [member=2226]Mel[/member] @alyss [member=3906]dcuodust[/member] @straightline3

Team Mystic   -   [member=2389]Mario Wario[/member] Bellsprouts [member=5544]Deathbyjackal[/member]  jay dcuodustier [member=2226]Mel[/member].I.Am [member=5427]jclemy[/member] [member=13]Carlo[/member]

Team Valor   -   emily, jaynestown, [member=2988]shavri[/member] woodbury jason gavino [member=1233]jopari[/member] [member=2125]mickeyjack3[/member]

The first round went quickly and as expected, with the repeated rock smashes of emily's Demarcate making short work of Mario Wario's underpowered Bortlebee. However, Bellsprout's Hydebear was able to withstand the poison stings of karatekid's Fleernerino for a surprise victory. This was followed by an extremely close match where Jaynestown narrowly defeated Deathbyjackal, Manningdude's rock throws slightly outdone by the strong grass damage attack of the Minnesaurtos

In round 4, Jay used his Colemankey with great effect against brand4d2's fiery Dragonaaron. Round 5 was especially notable as shavri made effective use of the smallest Pokémon of all, the tiny yet powerful Sprolderdash, but mark survived thanks to a high CP McCoytle.

Woodbury's Simister was no match for the wing attacks of rando's Fullnelson. Jason also deployed a Fullnelson, but with a lower powered aerial ace attack that could not overpower the Baldwinder of Mel.

Rounds 8 and 9 both featured a Bigbreesy with its signature hyperbeam attacks. This was enough to deal with alyssa's impressive Blountortle but did not allow dcuodust a chance against Mel's Kansassassin. straightline used a similarly powered Kansassassin, rendering the psychic powers of gavino's Mr. Marvin ineffective.

In the penultimate round jopari's unexpectedly effective Butterfreeman produced an easy victory over jclemy's Psyluck. (As you will recall these warriors as the heroes of the Battle of Porygon, it should be noted that this battle took place prior to their hatching of the 100km eggs that gave them the legendary Victrebell and Gronkowskar that they became famous for.) Finally mickeyjack3 used a rare Christinelett for an upset win over the normally unbeatable Camonite of Carlo.

Please accept these preliminary findings, along with my sincere hope that you catch them all, &c.

Enrico Palazzo, Order of Ash

I kind of thought someone might object, but I was certain it would be a Valor :) It was mostly random, except I did make certain I got Instinct, we might be the only two!

Thanks to [member=2143]Mel.I.Am[/member] for the suggestion, I've sent a note to Jason, last year's winner, for this week's theme.  Also thankful that I am not against A.J. Oh, I would love nothing more than to end your undefeated season lol. Thankfully for you I am the Matt Millen of fantasy football. I need bloody Miller to have a big game and get some TDs! I didn't watch the game last night, but kept checking ESPN.com. Was happy to see Green break out of his two game funk. So far with my two teams, RB2 Mathews is injured (FoCC), Flex Abdullah is injured (Otter), WR2 Cobb (both leagues) is poop, and suspended WR2 Gordon is entering rehab (Otter). Brees and my Ds and Ks are the reason I am 2-1 in both leagues lol.

FYI OTTER LEAGUE: I have Brady. He's returning next week. I am willing to trade him or Brees for a WR1.

In Otter, not because I am in the league, giving you a friendly tip, no need to keep Abdullah on your roster; Gordon is done thus droppable. Neither is coming back to help you. I want Brady, btw. Who do you want from my team? No to JJ. You do need some help at RB. Need to get deeper. I got plenty of that. ;) So send over an offer and I will look at it.

WEEK 4 RECAP!!1!

I had emailed our last year's champ for a theme but didn't hear back. So it's Dr. Seuss this week. (Well Seuss-lite in any case.)  Dedicated to all my coworkers who saw me writing this during lunch and thought, "wow what a dedicated employee Mark is!"

He went outside for a walk and met [member=819]brand4d2[/member] and [member=2226]Mel[/member].

They both looked so happy, grinning like ocelots.
They said "mickeyjack3, it's yards you need, lots!"

"Can I have some of yours Mel?" "Oh no, not this week.
If I gave you any [member=3906]dcuodust[/member] could end my streak."

"There's dcuodust, did I just hear him cackle?"
"Probably so," whispered Mel, "he still had more yards than [member=5544]Deathbyjackal[/member]."

"Me too," said brand4d2, "you can't have any of mine,
I only have a few more yards than @straightline."

"It's a tough week for some, and no one feels this keener
than [member=1]alyssa[/member], who lost to [member=846]rando[/member] by less than one Fleener."

"Come with us," they both said, "we'll start at the park.
We'll find you'll more yards than your neighbor mark!"

"Finding yards might be hard, (we should have started sooner.)
First let's go see our friend Odell Beckham Jr."

"[member=2143]Mel.I.Am[/member] took my yards," said Odell, "I'm so sorry.
But they weren't enough for him to have more than [member=1233]jopari[/member]."

Next stop was the garden, did Bellsprout have yards to spare?
"Yards are scarce around here, I don't know why you all care."

"Yards aren't useful like turtles, you can't stack them up high.
Although if you did, [member=2988]shavri[/member]'s would reach to the sky."

We went to [member=13]Carlo[/member]'s for lunch but nobody was there.
There was only a sign, "Closed because of Uncomfortable Chairs."

Then we wandered through Jaynestown, to borrow some of Jay's
Good luck finding Jay, people said, he's lost in the big Crabtree maze.

We hurried through Woodbury, where there were few yards to find
(We'd heard rumors that Governor Emily might not be too kind.)

At last we found Julio Jones, in the town of Falcon Beaks.
The word was he'd been saving his yards up for weeks.

"Yards? I've got yards! In fact I've got 300.
I had them were right here, where are they?" he wondered.

He found the right basket and opened the lid
but there was only a note from [member=5427]jclemy[/member] and [member=414]karatekid[/member].

"We borrowed your yards, but we'll pay back what we owe,
though we're still behind Gavin and [member=2389]Mario Wario[/member] ."

"I tell you what," said Julio, You can have my friend Matt's
Why he has more yards than Bartholomew Cubbins has hats!"

Now mickeyjack3 had the yards, but did they bring him joy?
He had more than mark's Bortles, more than mark's LeSean McCoy.

The truth is, it worked! mickeyjack3 felt more alive.
That's the good news, but there's bad news ... It's time for week five!

Promises, promises :)

This week is the return of Brady. Also the week Tajae Sharpe finally has a massive day. One of those statements is certain, one wishful thinking. I will be at a child's birthday party surreptitiously checking my phone. And missing A.P.E. And watching the NYCC feeds. sigh.

Since I picked on [member=2125]mickeyjack3[/member] last week he gets to choose this week's theme.  Make it dramatic!

WEEK 5 RECAP - POP EDITION!!!

To the tune of "Blank Space" (More or less.)

***********************************************

It's week 5, how'd it go?
I misplaced [member=2125]mickeyjack3[/member]'s theme
Asked my daughter, should have known
That she'd say something like
Ok dad, cut the scifi crap
Use Taylor Swift for the next recap
This song will be stuck in my head, for days

Half a point, isn't much
Less than that one miss by Gano
Derek Carr, in the clutch
That match was oh so close
[member=1233]jopari[/member] , job well done!
[member=2226]Mel[/member] is now 4 and 1
Only 5 weeks down, anyone can win
(Just forget all the points Hoyer had last weekend)

[member=2143]Mel.I.Am[/member] beat [member=5427]jclemy[/member]
Brady's comeback was insane
You saw how Jason crushed me
With Cameron Artis-Payne
[member=13]Carlo[/member]'s Amari Cooper
He outplayed A.J. Green
I won't mention [member=3906]dcuodust[/member] 's TE
That would be mean!

Jordan Howard was on fire
Ezekiel Elliott had more TDs
That was how Bellsprouts team
could handle mickeyjack3's
[member=2988]shavri[/member] had Vinatieri
The best kicker we've ever seen
With more points than anyone
On [member=414]karatekid[/member] 's team

Highest points, Otter League
That honor is Jaynestown's
Hey Hey It's My Team
Really needed Bennett's 3 touchdowns
Sammy Coates, he did so well
Why did Gavin bench Le'Veon Bell?
I guess Woodbury didn't mind, oh no

T.Y. Hilton, @straightline 's guy
Aaron Rodgers he let Jay down
Russel Wilson he's on bye
[member=819]brand4d2[/member] didn't frown
[member=2389]Mario Wario[/member]
What the heck happened to Julio?
Just have to take it week by week
(But at least you didn't draft Odell Beckham Jr)

Even though [member=5544]Deathbyjackal[/member]
Had this week's best RB
[member=846]rando[/member] had Roethlisberger
That gave him the victory
And there's [member=1]alyssa[/member] 's lineup
It says one thing to me
She must have had a fun time
At NYCC!

***********************************************

Minnesota and Tampa Bay on bye this week, Broncos vs Chargers tonight, Good luck everyone!

(Have ideas for recap themes? Let me know. Nothing political please, but anything else is fair game :) )

that was epic. Battle of the Kickers... Ive never won by so little before.
Hopefully i can learn how to sit my "studs" for bad matchups, and put in players with better upside. I hate seeing players with 20+ points sitting on my bench.

The obvious dramatic choice is Shakespeare, but in honor of NYCC, I'll give the option to choose between Will or Broadway Musical. West Side Story could be fun. Sent 10/9 at 10:14AM

You have successfully driven the Taylor Swift song out of my head, for which I am extremely grateful.

Spent some time last night yelling at the tv, Melvin Gordon just needed 6 more yards for the bonus!

I got two wins. Up to .500 in the FoCC league after three straight losses. (I beat our dear league commissioner.) Miller had a massive game and Cobb finally got a TD. Sitting at 4-2 in the Otter League, and I have a pretty good QB situation going forward, choosing between Brady and Brees, and McCoy has been worth the 13th pick that I spent on him. (Ingram, though, has not lived up to being the 12th pick.) And I am still leaving points on the bench. This week it was Smith and White.

What a horrible week. This is how bad it was, Dontari Poe the 346 lb DT for the chiefs, scored that trick play touchdown, and my opponent in an IDP league just happens to have him.

Now I'm at 10th place, but with the 3rd highest points scored, and what's up with that points against number? So now I am in a bit of a hole, but that's ok and even necessary for the dramatic arc of my FF season.

GG game Mel! As long as one of the Mels wins all is still right in the world.

I gotta admit, outside of my work League this is a pretty well informed group.  Almost every time I want to make a move someone beats me to the punch, well done folks.

Looking forward to that next win/loss story series Mr. Mark!

It is! I was surprised how quickly someone in both leagues moved on Don Jackson. That makes this week's crisis even worse for me, do I start Ty Montgomery or Cameron Meredith? Suppose I'll go with CM and his lyrical double dactyl of a name.  Which brings me to the next thing, no recap this week. I know what you're thinking, Jim Beam workers go on strike and suddenly I don't have a recap ready, are you supposed to believe that's a coincidence? Well I can neither denirm nor confy.

But: there will be one next week, it will be the bard, and it will likely be a tragedy :)

Packers versus Bears in a few hours, should be a good game. My prediction? Ripkowski gets 2 TDs and wins the title of the player with the coolest name that nobody has on their team. Good luck everyone!

Title: Re: FoCC Fantasy Football league 2016
Post by: Mario Wario on October 21, 2016, 02:35:42 PM
Yeah, that game was bad -- as in a bad football game to watch and for FF, it wasn't good too, unless you had Rodgers, Cobb, and/or Adams. I, too, debated on starting Ty as my flex, but seeing how the Packers been off lately before last night -- seeing Don (who got hurt, btw) and Adam starting -- I wanted to see how the offense would go. Play it safe.

So I went with Meredith as my flex and then Alshon for my second WR, after doing my homework. (Analyzing the numbers, the rankings, etc.) I felt it was the correct choice, but as the game started, I had a bad feeling that this game would be bad...it was. Once I saw Hoyer go down I knew CM and AJ were doomed. Never liked Thursday night games for FF purposes. Too many weird things happen, and I feel bad for Hoyer, because it's another Thursday night game injury for him.

Oh well, still have my big guns left and my opponent has players with harder matchups; however, it won't be easy. Won before like this in the past in other leagues, and at least both didn't put up a 0, lol. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But no wonder I took a year off from FF after winning the ESPN money league I was in. This year has been crazy due to injuries, and hoping for good luck, rather than, skill/knowledge helping out. Though FF always been about luck. Yeah, I might retire again after this year; played FF for 15 years before doing it again. I think I'm good and I have nothing else to prove due to winning leagues in the past. That said I will still do my best for this year.

Good luck this week all! May the force be with us. (Or at least our teams be free from the injury bug.)

My strategy didn't work out at all. Even before Hoyer went down I was surprised how well Green Bay defended with their top corners out. I did start Ty Montgomery in a PPR league with work and he did pretty good there. He's an interesting player.

Well said! And since I'm down, you're down, Mel's down ...  and since I didn't do the last recap, It's story time!

And don't worry, I won't repeat the fart story from last year. (Although, in this divisive age, stories that show how connected we all are are important.) This story could also be filed under "Questionable moments in parenting."

A while back, when our children were much younger, we got invited to a kid's birthday party at a putt-putt place. I took our kids, but when we got to the place we got a message from the host family that they were running late and wouldn't get there for another 40-50 minutes. The other parents that were there were just planning to drop their children off, but not me, I mean it's putt-putt then pizza right? I'm not going anywhere. So I say I'll take care of all the kids while we wait and the other parents say OK and leave.

This is all in this indoor mall that is just a long hall with shops and stuff. At one end there is a place that has really good pastries so I load up on those and I tell the kids we are going to go to the other end where there is an outside area where they can run around or eat. We're halfway there when one of the kids informs me she has to go to the bathroom. Of course the bathroom is by the end we were just at so I tell the other kids to sit here on this bench and wait and don't go anywhere. I walk back with the one kid, wait for her, then we go back to the bench. In the meantime the other kids had gotten into the pastries and were making a mess, crumbs, jam, chocolate sprinkles all over.

What I didn't realize was that the bench faced the big front window of a fitness center, and that there was a spin class going on. So right inside the window are rows of women having to look right at a bench full of little kids shoving chocolate covered croissants and jam puffs and what not into their mouths while they're working out. When I do notice them, they all turn to me and glare.

Left White on the bench. Touchdown. Left Wallace on the bench. 120 yards. Left Enunwa on the bench. Touchdown. Started Jackson. 3.5 fantasy points. West put up an even more impressive 1 fantasy point. McCoy - 1.1. Bennett - 0.5. West I can't do anything about. I always start him. White I had in, and then I read that McCoy would get 25-30 snaps, maybe more. So right before the deadline I inserted McCoy into the starting lineup. Brees outscoring Brady I can live because Brady was considered the better play this weekend. How about that Miami RB?!

WEEK 7 RECAP!!!!

***********************

I almost missed this again! I try to give my self some time Thursday morning to do this and well, this week you almost got the story of the junior developer who decided to change a whole bunch of mark's C++ code last night without ensuring thread safety. And nobody wants to hear that story.

But instead, I am happy to deliver a small section of a newly discovered play by Wm. Shakespeare. (Thanks to [member=2125]mickeyjack3[/member] for the theme!)

***********************

MICKEYJACK III

Act IV: Scene 3

A forest

[Enter a Messenger and William, a Soldier]

William.      Well met, honest man! Whither goest thou?

Messenger.   I bring news to the King.

William.      What news?

Messenger.   A tempered sort that I must decline and tell
Where [member=1]alyssa[/member] drove [member=819]brand4d2[/member] from the field
Where [member=5427]jclemy[/member] pummeled [member=2226]Mel[/member] 's forces til they did yield
   Where [member=414]karatekid[/member] ...

William.      Fie! Such morsels are not fit for kingly crib
Richer food must break a monarch fast.
Say alyssa blounted brand4d2 'pon a Bengal hill,
That jclemy minstrels are ajaying oer Mel's hoyer'd fate,
That Jason could not drive karatekid from forted camp
(Yet still he kept his seat.)

Messenger.   I would you could speak for me,
I have not your treasury of words

William.      In this you err.
   Words are fantastic things
Not bank'd but newly minted barely the charge is due.
Come, I'll teach you the way of it.
Our paths lie together, we'll make company,
I'll your Marlowe if not your Aaron be.

[Exeunt]

Act IV: Scene 5

The palace.

[Enter King Mickeyjack III, Collinsworth, Michaels, and other lords]

King Mickeyjack III   'Sblood I thirst for tales of broils and battle.
Tis a fortnight since we heard aught.

[Enter a Messenger]

Messenger.   May't please your grace, I bring thee news.

King Mickeyjack III   Welcome you are. Let's the abridgement hear.

Messenger.   Defeat for Gavin, a Palamedes throw
Changing [member=5544]Deathbyjackal[/member] for a fumbled stroke.

[member=2835]straightline3[/member] with a bootless footman enlisted cousins' aid
That [member=2389]Mario Wario[/member] 's smith may need a week to mend

[member=3906]dcuodust[/member] as an otter drew arms in both land and sea
   With green-clad knights convinced bellsprouts
And Emily's forces most passing strange.

King Mickeyjack III   Alas, is it such misadventured book?

Messenger.   Fortune's smile for young Jay
With Woodbury a palmer lost in th'woods
And [member=846]rando[/member] on mighty charger drove
   Through Jaynestown's uncharged gates.

King Mickeyjack III   More divers indeed, yet not a collection made. Keep on.

Messenger.   Palazzo hungry for victory like a giant for roasted ram
   Rang [member=1233]jopari[/member] 's bell

   [member=2143]Mel.I.Am[/member] , ovial on eagle's back
Ringed [member=13]Carlo[/member] till he a bombarded cooper fell

The balance settled in final quarter of the contest fine
Sir Flash a disponged victory over [member=2988]shavri[/member]

King Mickeyjack III   We are relieved, gramercy, though the war goes still.

We'll neither bemoan nor bray out our septimanal fate
A Wassail hour to have ere we start week eight!

***********************

Good luck everyone! Jaguars versus Titans tonight, and one of the bigger bye weeks with Baltimore, Los Angeles, Miami, NY Giants, Pittsburgh, San Francisco out.

Also another London game early Sunday with Washington versus the Bengals, tally-ho!

Dez Bryant is back so I'm more encouraged. I dumped all my dead weight and picked up at least some serviceable playing non-injured players! Hey, I've always been a second half home stretch kind of guy!

So this game tonight is lovely.......
Btw, DeMarco Murray is hurt. Calling it leg so I doubt he comes back due to the big lead.

Edit: Never mind, he came back.

Were you the one that offered me a trade in Otter? If so, due to the Thursday night game, going to wait until the game is over before I do anything with it if you don't mind. :)

Thank goodness for garbage time, might have saved my week. I almost cried when I saw the half-time stats for Bortles.

Just noticed that my daughter's team in the Otter has 4 QBs! I'll see if I can get her to trade one or two.

We have a board game called Galaxy Truckers which reminds me a lot of FF. It pays to have a strategy, but there is still a huge luck element to the game where everything can go wrong depending how the dice land.

Still holding on to that #1 waiver priority, I've never had it before, and now I can't bring myself to use it.

Wow, today has been rather frustrating for a lot of folks -- players getting hurt, benched (looking at you Ingram) or expected to play but won't. Good grief.

Indeed.

And Booker is hurt. Those FF dreams of having a #1 RB might be over already? At least for today? Tips guys: just use your bench for handcuffs. Absolutely crazy.

Edit: Booker is back for now.

Chiefs RBs in a similar situation. Rough week. 3 hurt players and Ty Montgomery was a late scratch with all of my other options in earlier games.

I started Cobb. He didn't play. got 0 points in both leagues from him. I was still able to win in Otter, but fell in FoCC by 0.24.

I hear you. I lost to a team that started Chris Ivory................Chris........Ivory folks. Look on the bright side, both he and Cobb scored more than Ingram.

Nobody's out of it yet. As for me, like the mighty banana slug that I saw on my walk this morning, I start my slow determined march to victory.

WEEK 9 RECAP !!¡!¡

Better late than never ... unless it's zombies.

Thanks to [member=2389]Mario Wario[/member] for suggesting this week's Walking Dead theme!

A few things first. My first go at this was much different, with more of what you might expect from a zombie recap. But with the season premiere still fresh in our heads (see? normally that would be a fine thing to write, "Fresh in our heads," but now it's weird, #thanksneegan) I had to change it. So now we are all mostly happy, those few of us that are zombies are useful ones. And instead of battle this and battle that, if you won you have a nice job and if you lost you're probably working for the person you lost to or are otherwise disadvantaged. But rest assured that many of us had horrible things happen to us in an earlier draft.

What I wanted to have a bit of fun with was the notion that certain skills might be surprisingly useful in a zombie world. Walking Dead touched on this a bit with pizza delivery man Glenn and now with Ezekiel's theater experience. And there's Columbus in Zombieland of course.

As always, everyone gets a mention, there are a few bad puns, and it was done in a hurry :)

********************************************************

Survivor's Diary, Palazzo. Date unknown.

It has been a week since I last made an entry. We, those of us that are left, achieved our goal of reaching the Coronado naval base but with mixed results. The base did provide us with food and water, some much needed clothing, but would only allow us a single night's stay. They did tell us about a community that has formed in the San Diego convention center that might take us in, it is from this (so far) safe place that I am writing.

Compared to other survivors we have encountered after our escape from the Tijuana party bus, this "Friends of Comic Con" (or FoCC, this being how they refer to themselves) are notable for both the sophistication and eccentricity of the techniques they have developed for survival. Their current leaders are [member=5427]jclemy[/member] and second in command [member=3906]dcuodust[/member] . Apparently, leadership does go through frequent changes, and these have recently deposed a [member=2125]mickeyjack3[/member] and Gavin in circumstances that people are hesitant to discuss.

Day Zero happened during the large comic convention that used to be held here. (This being of course my reason for being in Tijuana, to avoid the crowds.) After the initial horror and confusion, the surviving attendees found themselves well-situated for the future, all of them possessing expertise in undead lore. The novelist Max Brooks was on hand to write down page after page of ideas, until he finally escaped. Additionally, there are large quantities of educational resources at hand. The chief librarian, [member=13]Carlo[/member] and assistant [member=2226]Mel[/member] are engaged in cataloging these materials in what they call "Project Longbox."

Our introduction to the group was unorthodox from the beginning. The military encampments we have encountered have invariably submitted us to prolonged interrogation and medical exams. By contrast, immediately after reaching one of the FoCC checkpoints we were directed to [member=2988]shavri[/member] , a tarot card reader, and an ominously named but jovial palm reader, [member=5544]Deathbyjackal[/member] . Both were already talking to other arrivals, shavri to a person named Jason, squirming noticeably in his chair. Deathbyjackal to a person named [member=819]brand4d2[/member] . Both the interviewees seemed harmless enough but were denied entry and sent on their way with no reason given. The looks they gave as they left made me think that we may not have seen the last of these two.

While not admitting or denying belief in psychic powers the FoCC claim that such interviewers are unparalleled in reading people and assessing their candidacy. Fortunately (hah) we passed this initial test and were allowed past the barrier. We were provided with a guide, an appropriately named [member=2835]straightline3[/member] who was accompanied by a subordinate, Woodbury. (We have found these pairings of master and trainee to be common. Upon being shown the kitchen area we were delighted to see the famed organic chef Bellsprouts but found out she is subordinate to [member=1233]jopari[/member] , a former taco truck cook whose experience and cooking style are better suited to the needs of this new world.)

On our walk to the convention center we were shocked to see an immense number of the undead immobile, seemingly oblivious to our presence and standing in well-formed lines. Our guide explained that many con attendees that had been affected by the plague simply reverted to this behavior and have been standing in a "Hall H" line ever since, waiting for a panel that will never happen. On rare occasions a group will detach and become aggressive when an undead celebrity emerges from one of the mysterious hidden passageways in the convention center that are yet to be explored.

We had the misfortune of such an event happening even as we walked past, a zombie Tom Hiddleston shambling through the broken doorway and rousing the largest group that had been observed to date. I was ready to run, but straightline3 calmly lit a flare and told us not to panic, that he had been in worse situations before. I asked him if this was in the military, he shook his head and quietly whispered, "Kindergarten teacher."

After the flare reached its height, mariachi music was heard from various places. In addition to confusing the walkers, we were told these musicians, the well known group Emily and the [member=846]rando[/member] rebels, provided both entertainment and the main method of communicating at a distance.

We immediately saw pedicabs approaching quickly and silently, each carrying several peculiarly attired passengers. I assumed they would convey us to safety, but instead the passengers disembarked and the pedicabs, now with lights turned on and pop music playing loudly, went off in various directions, drawing a portion of the walkers in slow pursuit. Later discussion with the pedicab drivers, Jay and trainee [member=1]alyssa[/member] , revealed that this was in fact their original job, and navigating mobs of the undead was much easier than driving through a typical comic-con crowd.

I was now able to ascertain the curious costumes of our rescuers, a combination of football gear, Star Wars stormtrooper outfits, and medieval armor. This protection, combined with a particular set of moves, proved  effective in clearing a path through our attackers and allowing us to reach the safety of the convention center's upper levels. One such hero, a former bouncer named [member=2389]Mario Wario[/member] told me of months spent training with the great running back coach Jaynestown, the combination of quick cuts and stiff arms ideal for dealing with the undead.

Still hearing the pedicabs blare out Bruno Mars, I expressed surprise at the flagrant use of batteries, such a scarce and precious resource these days. We were then shown to what they jokingly called the "recharge room." Treadmills from nearby hotels had been cleverly rigged by engineers [member=2143]Mel.I.Am[/member] and [member=414]karatekid[/member] so that a small amount of electrical output could be harnessed. Even so the equipment needed to be in constant use for enough batteries to be charged. To accomplish this they relied on walkers that had perished under peaceful circumstances, leaving locomotion and certain fundamental instincts intact. One named [member=4270]mark[/member] had been found under a pile of bottles in the Hilton bar, another called Hellions perished from an outdated Cobb salad. It was discovered that they could be guided onto the equipment by simply placing a beer bottle in front of them. As long as the beer bottle remains in sight they will walk unceasingly, groaning sadly.

I am losing the light and must stop for now. Obviously there is much to learn here, and I will continue to document as I am able.

********************************************************

Week 9 already underway! With Matt Ryan, Julio Jones and Mike Evans giving someone a good start to the week. Another big bye week: Arizona, Chicago, Cincinnati, Houston, New England, Washington.

Good luck everyone!

You don't have to be! I just said people didn't want to talk about it. It could have been an awkward social situation, or a game of Catan that got out of hand? Maybe the former leaders are really on a secret mission ...

But you are in first place right now with a great points total. Ditto for [member=3906]dcuodust[/member] in the Otter.

That's why you're not on the treadmill!  You're right, I didn't catch that. There was also a 0.2 delta in the Otter league in week 7. In general there have been a surprising number of really close matches this year.

Hey, I worked in my college library, so I am suited for my role in the apocalypse!

It's maybe a sad thing that when I brainstormed an apocalypse, one of my first thoughts was "Finally there will be time to read." Originally you were caught up in the stampede after the Funko employees abandoned their post and Carlo yelled "FREE FUNKOS EVERYONE!" I had this silly idea of zombie attendees wandering the exhibit hall floor forever clutching to Funko exclusives.

Ahh, thanks! I can see it now, my 10 step plan.

1. Solicit topic
2. Procrastinate
3. Brainstorm during commute. Record thoughts in little notebook
4. Go Home. Forget notebook at work
5. Guinness
6. Write
7. Guinness
8. Go to proofread but end up rewriting everything instead
9. Publish
10. Think of better idea than what you just wrote. Wonder where all the Guinness went

The election really threw me for a loop, so I've taken a few days hiatus from the internet, the news, etc. It's especially hard to get back to things that are fun, or silly. This is one of the most fun things I do and certainly the most silly, but we're going to keep going  :)

So without further ado, the world has need of you and your abilities and there is much to be done. TO ME MY X-MEN!

WEEK 9 RECAP!

with special guest narrator, Professor Charles Xavier!!!

**************************************

Hello students, Scott is at the optometrist's so I will be leading today's discussion. We will get to the day's training in a minute, but first let me compliment you all on your contributions in repelling the Ciegrimite invasion, the latest of the all too frequent alien attacks here at the mansion.  Logan and Doop inform me that the various liquids the Ciegrimites left behind still pose considerable danger, so you will continue your sparring practice out here on the football fields until they have disposed of all of the hazardous material.

Yes, yes. I know it isn't the danger room but you can all use the fresh air and after all it is here, out in the world, where you will have your battles. With proper discipline and training, you will find that all of your various talents can be effective. Recall when [member=3906]dcuodust[/member] faced mark some time back and everyone thought dcuodust's power over really tiny particles of dirt would be no match for mark's ability to produce copous amounts of hot air? Well just as dcuodust easily defeated mark then, he has managed to defeat both [member=2988]shavri[/member] and [member=819]brand4d2[/member] this time, confusing shavri's mimicry ability and clogging up brand4d2's cybernetic enhancements to the point where he could hardly move a yard.  This gives dcuodust the the lead in our little contest for now. But nobody is out of the running yet!

[member=2226]Mel[/member] , your combination of Valkyrie training and feline powers is quite formidable, and you would likely have defeated mark had you not turned completely into an ocelot and then vanished into the bushes after a mouse. Perhaps some extra time on partial transformations? Another session with Rahne on Skippy? Eh? Oh yes I meant "Skype," of course.

A commendable last minute effort by Bellsprouts, a golden example for us all, yet not quite enough to measure up to [member=2143]Mel.I.Am[/member] 's surprisingly effective cowboy skills.

An entertaining contest as always between our two martial artists, [member=414]karatekid[/member] and [member=1233]jopari[/member] , but with karatekid just a bit stronger in all aspects. Practice, practice, practice, everyone! Excellent defense and kicking. Which brings us to Woodbury's bout with [member=2389]Mario Wario[/member] . Woodbury, those powerful kicks are formidable, but only if you don't miss. Excellent use of the Kaepernick maneuver by Mario Wario, you caught us all by surprise, but I also hope you settle on a code name soon instead of changing it every week. The Future Foundation comes for dinner in a few days and Toad is tired of redoing the name cards.

Speaking of code names ... Emily, your supersonic belches* were impressive as always, completely shattering Jaynestown's ice attack. I am afraid however that the names you have submitted for approval so far are unacceptable, I think you know why.

[member=2125]mickeyjack3[/member] , excellent throwing, you'll be another Remy I predict, but you have to diversify if you want to counter Jason's psychic powers of discomfort.

Both students with luck-based powers had a difficult time. [member=5427]jclemy[/member] 's good luck powers helped [member=13]Carlo[/member] instead, and Gavin's bad luck powers affected only himself, allowing [member=846]rando[/member] to run all over him. Maybe we can ask Domino and Ms. Hardy to consult? Ah, good point. I'll have Wade ask them, it's the least he can do after that scene he made at the dance.

[member=5544]Deathbyjackal[/member] , an excellent performance, our best overall excepting karatekid. And it is nice to finally have another canine power set on the team. I think I speak for all us us though that the "weighing of the souls" trick gets old fast. Jay, have Josh take a look at that foot please? You don't want it to get worse.

[member=1]alyssa[/member] , outstanding work. I told you your time compression powers could be used for things other than keeping up with all of those tv shows you enjoy. You did remember to record Blunt Talk? Much appreciated. [member=2835]straightline3[/member] , our Lemurian guest, a bit of an off day for you but as I told the previous 2 straightlines, you have to learn how to turn. Have a chat with Sam will you?

That's all we have time for now, I know everyone is anxious to get to Kitty's lecture on solid state physics. Good luck to everyone in the next round! And remember, any dream worth having is a dream worth fighting for.

**************************************

Thanks to jclemy for the theme! I hope everyone is doing ok.

*Emily is my daughter and can burp magnificently, apocalyptically even, just like her mom. If you meet either of them, please don't tell them I wrote this.

I have two answers.

1. Generally, RBs give you more consistent points, with a higher floor and WRs are more boom-or-bust with more variability. Many WRs get their points from big plays, for example a 50 yard catch for a TD would get them 11 points in our league, plus an extra 3 if that gets them to 100 receiving yards total. This can get lost when you look at the stats, a WR may have had a low point total in a past week but dropped a big catch or had a TD called back due to a penalty. WRs can also be affected by a really good cornerback on the team they're playing (e.g., the days of Revis Island) and sometimes a WR and QB just seems to get into a groove in a particular game.

2. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And then there's Alshon :(

I guess that's kind of what makes Fantasy Football so addictive. On any given week any team can beat any other team. Superstar Antonio Brown can put up monster numbers with Big Ben and then come back down to Earth against a perfectly mediocre team, while a relatively unknown guy (Rishard Matthews) can come out of the woodwork and put up good numbers with his 2nd year QB.

Great Job Mark!

Hi everyone! Haven't posted in a while due to traveling and some personal stuff.  Took a big internet break as well, to the point where I forgot to put in any waiver claims in all of my leagues. On the plus side, it's done wonders for my blood pressure :)

Have missed a couple of recaps but alyssa did supply a lovely theme, and I hope to use it for this week. In the mean time, there is just 1 more week before finals start! Here's where we are.

In one league, Jason (last year's winner) and [member=414]karatekid[/member] are the only two guaranteed to be in the top bracket at 8-3. Just 0.11 points total between them which is really close. Then there are 2 at 7-5 and 5 teams(!) at 6-6. [member=2226]Mel[/member] has the highest overall point total and I have the highest points-against.

In the Otter, there are already 4 teams that will be in the top bracket, [member=2143]Mel.I.Am[/member] 's son Jay at 9-3, [member=5544]Deathbyjackal[/member] [member=3906]dcuodust[/member] and my daughter Emily at 8-4. Looks like there are 3 teams, [member=846]rando[/member] [member=2835]straightline3[/member] and [member=1]alyssa[/member] that have a shot at the last 2 spots. Deathbyjackal has the highest points total and [member=2389]Mario Wario[/member] the highest points-against.

My son is not doing as well in the Otter league and I raised the possibility that he might get the last place prize, the "How to Change Your Name" book. His reply, "I'll just tell people it was the best advice my dad ever gave me." Well done, but still ... ouch.

My only solace is that I have the highest point total in the league. My luck on matchups has sucked!

Hope all is well Mark. Everyone I know if having a hard time finding joy right now, so understood that one of your grand recaps might not have been a top priority.

sooooo,  odd question

what do folks think of starting 2 WR & a TE from one team?  my rational is if the team wins as predicted... yeah i know garbage in garbage out... chances are one or more of teh WR's or TE will do well.

on a side note, [member=5544]Deathbyjackal[/member] 's opinion doesn't count since i'm up against him this week

If those are your best players on your roster then by all means. But it's a little risky because game flow can dictate if they just throw to the WR or just hand off to the running back all day.

I think starting the 2 WRs in your case is likely fine, statistically it limits your upside a bit but gives you more stability. Less sure about the TE given who it is.

Starting to think having 3 WRs (or 2 WRs and Flex) be better than having the TE spot. I also recommend PPR for next year. Both leagues should add the PPR scoring to help out how poorly WRs can be. At least you can get something if your player doesn't do well in other areas. However, it should be 0.5, not 1 point for that. We, too, should start thinking on moving to ESPN (the Yahoo system is rather meh) and do auction for waiver pickups. Have a $100 budget. (If you are new to this, it's fake $100, not real money.)

Btw, Gronk is having back surgery tomorrow and could miss 8 wks.

I hear ya and I do get why the typical system for waivers is fine, but the auction system does give every team a chance at that player that could help them long term. You can do $0 pickups if anyone is afraid of not having money. Also, by adding in this feature, a team can get money back (again, fake money) to make it worth wild being the highest scorer of any week. $5 I recommend be best for this part. Those fake trophies on Yahoo (or elsewhere) do nothing.

Overall, it is up to the commish. I am just saying things that could work. I do like how folks in each league are talking about what to do next. Always a plus in my book.

One of the things I enjoy about our league is that we have a nice variety of folks who have experience with ffl mixed with folks who are new. It's the Con experience in a microcosm. Grizzled veterans enjoy sharing their knowledge with "Newbs." I think we should always look for ways to improve our ffl experience, but introduce it at a pace that we can all grow with together. "Small steps, Sparks."

We can put these to a vote when it's closer to next season, another change that I had meant to suggest but forgot about was to add return yards for DSTs. Moving to ESPN is a good idea IMHO with the issues yahoo has been having recently. With the waiver settings, we could have one league that just uses priority and another that uses budget. We want the scoring to be the same between the two but I don't think waiver logic has to be the same. I would not like using budgets during the draft since we tend to have a significant number of people that autodraft.

For PPR I'll run some numbers after the season is over, we discussed it before this season but a concern was how dominant the top-3 WRs were expected to be. They have had some huge games but haven't been as consistent as I thought they would be. I definitely think any PPR should be < 1 point, maybe even lower than 0.5

Must win week for me against [member=414]karatekid[/member] but didn't get off to a good start last night :/
Title: Re: FoCC Fantasy Football league 2016
Post by: Mario Wario on December 02, 2016, 12:10:43 PM
Return yards for DSTs would be fine with me. Had it in one league I was part of and it worked. I also agree that the draft should stay as is. I have done auction drafts before and it does make things interesting, no doubt, but this area doesn't need fixing for next year. Yeah, the WRs this year haven't been all that and I think adding the PPR scoring would be fine. Even if a WR went off, if the other team has decent WRs, RBs, or that awesome player that can carry a team, can offset that. Scoring: I also agree. Still say 0.5 would work but yeah, 1 point doesn't work, in my opinion.

And finally, ESPN does it better. It's not perfect but their system is just way better than what Yahoo uses.

(Good luck this week, Mark!)

can i just say, & I know I'm the newbe to FF ... WR's suck. WT* is up with them?
jumping in a bit late but my WRs have allowed me to win 7 straight games and go from worst to first (tied). Dez Bryant single handily won a match up for me with like 25 points on a Monday night game to beat a 95% prediction loss. They have been my bread and butter all season. RBs suck for me ... 2 years running.

I like our league and draft. It's competitive and fun but not hardcore so someone like me who plays but can't invest too much time on it can play and have fun. (Yes I autodraft😉)

Raising a toast to [member=2389]Mario Wario[/member] who, just like me, started Kaepernick this week. Was still a sliver of hope if I had huge games from my Colt WRs tonight, checked at halftime and saw Luck already had 3 TDs ... all to Dwayne Allen.

Playoffs start tonight, (if you have Raiders or Chiefs players.) Good luck to all!

Congratulations to everyone who made the championship bracket, but we know the real action is in consolation.

[member=414]karatekid[/member] , Jason, Jay and [member=5544]Deathbyjackal[/member] have the top 2 spots in their leagues and get a bye.

The rest of the upper brackets are [member=2125]mickeyjack3[/member] versus [member=2226]Mel[/member] , [member=1233]jopari[/member] versus [member=2143]Mel.I.Am[/member] , @straightline3 versus @dcuodust , and [member=846]rando[/member] versus Emily.

Jason has a shot at a repeat championship, but jopari will have to give up last years traveling prize for last place. Sorry, bud.

Not yet! Sorry, I didn't list out the consolation bracket status. Since you, (like me,) just missed out on the upper bracket at 7th place, you have a bye this week and will play next week against the winner between [member=819]brand4d2[/member] and [member=2389]Mario Wario[/member] . [member=5427]jclemy[/member] has a bye as well. Gavin plays Woodbury (can't remember who that is), also Mel's friend the Bellsprouts against [member=13]Carlo[/member] and [member=2988]shavri[/member] versus dcuodust.

Yep, that's my daughter. Roethlisberger and Gordon together was painful, same thing happened to me in a different league. At least you didn't have Dez Bryant as well, had 0.5 a point for him in that league and that was only because it's IDP and he had a tackle.

Overall, I think this was the lowest scoring week in the season in both leagues.

I ended up losing. That performance from Bell gave me false hope lol. I hate that I put so much faith in Seahawks defense/special teams. Not anymore though , next year they are on my avoid list, and I won't be afraid to start players going against them.

This was a fun season, lots of injuries, but that kept us playing the waiver wire. I'm glad most of you were active on the waivers too. Kept things challenging

Everyone plays this week! Rams against the Seahawks Thursday night, I feel sorry for the Rams.

8 teams are still vying for the top overall spot, (I don't know if I mentioned it but I figured grand prize goes to the league winner with the highest score in finals week.) We'll need a few extra prizes this year but I have plenty of time to hit the thrift shops and yard sales.

In one league we have [member=414]karatekid[/member] versus [member=2143]Mel.I.Am[/member] as well as [member=2125]mickeyjack3[/member] versus last year's champ Jason.

In the Otter there's [member=2835]straightline3[/member] against [member=5544]Deathbyjackal[/member] as well as 2 of the next generation showing us how it's all done, Jay against Emily.

Good luck everyone!

Our season ended yesterday, this was once again a very competitive group and thanks to everyone who participated. Here are the results!

The league winners were Jason and [member=2835]straightline3[/member] , straightline3 scored higher in the finals and I am proud to award him this year's FoCC FF Booster Gold award in honor of heroism, the demonstration of advanced football knowledge and possible access to time travel technology.

It just occurred to me that I've only been announcing things in the forums so Jason (last year's winner) might not know there is a whole other league vying for the grand prize. I'll let mickeyjack3 break the news.  Rest assured, there will be very special prizes for the top 2 finishers in each league

At the other end of things, [member=13]Carlo[/member] and Woodbury Walkers (who I think is a forum member but I can't figure out who) came in 12th place in their leagues, but Carlo scored lower in the last game and I am proud to award him this year's FoCC FF Bizarro Best Prize!

I loved that series so much.

We won't do anything with prizes until the summer, so jopari still has plenty of time to add inspirational notes to the book, perhaps a favorite Moscow Mule recipe?

Here are the standings in each league. In one league:

I'll post another note about the recaps, and their recent absence, but thanks again to everyone. We'll have at least 3 open spots for next year, let me know if anyone wants to participate.   :)

We won't do anything with prizes until the summer, so jopari still has plenty of time to add inspirational notes to the book, perhaps a favorite Moscow Mule recipe?

Here are the standings in each league. In one league:

  • [member=414]karatekid[/member]
  • [member=2143]Mel.I.Am[/member]

And in the otter:

I'll post another note about the recaps, and their recent absence, but thanks again to everyone. We'll have at least 3 open spots for next year, let me know if anyone wants to participate.   :)
I play in several ffl leagues, but this one is easily the most fun! Thanks to Mark for the awesome job as commissioner, especially the amazing updates! I've been keeping Jason in the loop on both leagues. Dang, I came close to beating him in the semifinals, but no such luck. I'll hope to see you all in July pending the registration process.

Writing this partly to take my mind off of the Raiders game, but want to say a few things before I forget them completely. First off, thanks again to everyone who helped with my little recap experiment. Naturally, the idea came to me when I was a bit in my cups, but any inspiration from the Pantheon is to be acknowledged and who am I to dismiss Dionysius? It's a very silly thing of course, but something I wanted to do since it was challenging and would take me out of my comfort zone at times. With this league and the others I commish there were themes ranging from Shakespeare to Limericks, and from My Little Pony to Game of Thrones. My favorites were some of the first ones from FoCC, Dragnet and TNG. There was also a Sherlock one from another league that I was quite happy with. The har ... erm ... the most difficult ones were a Viagra theme ("Do you need more fantasy in your life?") and the Pokemon Go one.

For Dragnet it was so much fun listening to the old radio broadcasts. Some of the stories were really quite good but there was also all the little things, words nobody uses anymore, how the characters start smoking once the show got some cigarette sponsors, or how Friday questions a suspect by softly repeating the same question until the tough-acting suspect suddenly breaks for no apparent reason. So much of what makes the show work is rhythym, not realism. By way of happy coincidence, I was working my way through Deep Space Nine at the same time and came across the great episode where they go back in time to the tribbles episode from the original series. There are a number of Dragnet references with the episode's temporal detectives that I otherwise would have missed entirely.

Speaking of Star Trek, it's such a rich universe that the recap pretty much wrote itself. I think I spent more time making certain the stardate made sense, that people had the correct rank, etc. FF can be a bit like gambling so of course the Ferengi would be involved, the Klingons would naturally claim football as part of their culture, etc. It also gave me a chance to reference Darmok, one of my favorite TNG episodes, and combine it with the way people who play FF tend to start having weird conversations that must be incomprehensible to others. I also quite like the notion of (presumably sterilized) therapy tribbles.

I set some very strict time constraints on the recaps, which I mostly obeyed but became problematic when work got busy. I think that if I do them again I would only do them for this league and maybe cheat a bit to give myself some more time. With the Taylor Swift one for example, while I was delighted how neatly names like Odell Beckham Jr. and Cameron Artis-Payne fit into the lyrics, it wasn't 5 minutes after I posted it that I realized I had missed the most obvious thing. The song was Dance Card, and the bye weeks had just started, so that should have been the schtick. "I've got a bye week ______ and I'll write your name." (Hopefully that song will be out of my head before the next season.)

Then that election thing happened, and I found myself needing to withdraw a bit, away from the internet for a while, but also retreating into technical things instead of anything creative. With something creative I always find myself in this progression, starting with "how the heck am I going to do this?" to "Hahahaha this is going to be awesome!" but then "This is horrible, I can't let anyone see it!" Even in a supportive environment, (and you won't find a more supportive group than this one,) I just had to avoid that last stage for a while.

Which brings me to what would have been the final recap, based on a suggestion from alyssa to use movies like Arrival and Independence Day. What alyssa didn't know was that I've been fascinated by the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis for a long time and how much I loved Arrival. It was a perfect suggestion and I regret not doing it, so instead I'll just summarize my chickenscratch notes before they get lost.

The title would have been "The Arrival of the Last Independence Day Starfighters," (or some variation thereon,) and would have dealt with someone becoming obsessed with hidden signals in the player stat forecasts yahoo publishes. After all, what better place to hide a message than in numbers that everyone dismisses? Some mathematical concepts with wonderful names would have made an appearance, like jerk equations and derangements. As more of the code is figured out, things start to seem different in small ways, (shades of Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius.) You know when you learn a new word then hear it on the radio later that day, is that just a mental quirk or did reality change in some small way? Ultimately of course, the signals are from the resistance, and those who figure it out are invited to the cause.  ;)

Hopefully everyone trying for SDCC tickets got what they wanted.

I have some of the prizes already, I thought I had the prize for [member=2835]straightline3[/member] but I found something better/worse. There will also be stuff for [member=2125]mickeyjack3[/member] 's friend, [member=414]karatekid[/member] , [member=412]tk415650[/member] and [member=13]Carlo[/member]

There's also something for [member=2226]Mel[/member] , not a prize per se but promises are promises.

If any of you won't be at SDCC let me know and we will figure something out. Hopefully I'll see you, and everyone else in the league, in San Diego. I'll likely be at the forum meetups and I'm not that hard to find otherwise, I tend to spend a lot of time wandering the convention floor.

Again, thanks for your awesome commish work Mark! I have been in several leagues foe several years, and you are by far the best commissioner ever! I will be back for the full Con and look forward to connecting with you and other fellow league members. I also would like to see a special commendation for bravery go to Alyssa for stepping so far out if her comfort zone to try something new.

I know it's way too early to talk about it, but would definitely be interested in taking one of those open spots in the fall!

Note to the commish: Jason is going to leave us this year. His hands were not cold and dead, but I did have to pry the Iron Thrown from them. I will deliver the traveling trophy at next year's Con (pending my getting a badge of course).
