Unique Situation with Badge Name
« on: May 28, 2017, 12:47:49 PM »
I have a friend that got an SDCC badge for the first time. He's super excited.  However, now that the day is approaching he's sort of discovered an issue with the badge name.  My friend is trans and hasn't been able to get his name legally changed yet.  He really doesn't want to have to deal with having his dead name slung around his neck for five days. It's going to be super uncomfortable.  Does he have any options at all?

My first thought is he can just print out his name on a piece of paper and slip it over his dead name.  If asked for ID, he could remove it to show for comparison, but at least he'd have his real name showing for most of the con.  But maybe there's a better more official solution.  Surely my friend isn't the first to encounter this situation?  Do we have a good contact that can advise us on what he should do?

First, you can try to contact CCI and have them change the information on the Member ID. But it might be too late for that now, since badges have started shipping.

FWIW, I never like my name showing on my badge. Since I cosplay and strangers are taking pictures of me, I don't want them to be able to zoom in on the photos and see who I am and try to 'find me' online, KWIM? So I always place a piece of paper over my name on the badge so that it is not visible. WIth the old paper badges I used a paper clip, but last year with the RFID badge I used a sticky note. I placed the 'sticky' part over the name and cut it to fit. Not going to fly off and easy to remove if security needs to check the name.

This is super helpful and sort of what I was already thinking for him.  I'll pass this along.

Which email address would be best for contacting just in case?

If a solution doesn't work and it makes your friend feel better, I am usually in such sensory overload while at the show that never notice anyone's badge name.

Yeah same here. But I think it's just having to have that name so visible that's bothering him.

While I imagine that CCI would be accommodating (and I'll say that the contact form TJ linked is generally responded to quite quickly. The only problem is the answers can go to junk fairly easily.) But unfortunately, I think it's too late to change the ID on the badges now before shipping, as I said I imagine CCI would be accommodating. But then you run into the problem you generally addressed before.

If CCI changed his name on the badge it wouldn't match up to his ID as he's not been able to legally change his name yet. Like others have mentioned, I've never paid attention to names, but I imagine security are more likely to be looking for names and possibly ask for an ID. So I think, for now, your suggestion for printing his name to attach it over the badge ID name, be able to remove it, then explain to anyone who may ask for ID etc.

:-\ Not ideal unfortunately if he has to do the above, but I hope it works out well and even if he has to keep his current badge name he'll love the convention and no one gives him any issues or worries.

I have a friend who uses her porn name on her badge and not her real name.  It's completely understandable why she does this.  With being pro she never had a problem picking them up.  I have wondered what would happen if they ID her but I'm sure she has sites she could show them.

How did it work out for your friend? Im glad you brought this topic up because I had the same concern about having a name on the badges for this reason and also for general safety especially if names are on kids badges which I hope are not.
