Anything that is not above 500 dollars a night? Wow I might have to sell my five kidneys and my fur ball collection to get a room.

LOL, the Hilton Bayfront and MMM are charging $1,000 per night, so $500 sounds pretty cheap in comparison!

Looking for some advice ... this is my fifth Comic Con over the last 9 years. First time I bought a hotel early (Pacific Inn) a couple of miles out. Second time I went with a friend who splurged for Marriott Gaslamp. Last two times I went the early bird route and stayed at Doubletree Mission Valley.

But this time I am committing to the lottery. I'm taking my kids as usual but they are older teens and pretty independent.

What's a solid strategy for hopefully getting a downtown hotel but just staying somewhere decent if that fails? Are you guaranteed a hotel on the shuttle line if you go through the lottery or can you get shut out completely?  And how long after the lottery are there decent options for housing?

It seems that nowadays getting a downtown hotel through the lottery is all about how fast you get in to fill out the form.  If you get in within a minute or so, chances are there will be downtown hotels available.
They may not be adjacent, but close.  One strategy would be to adjust your hotel selection based on when you get in to give you more opportunities to get a downtown hotel.
Also, there is no guarantee that you will get any hotel, but as history has shown, there are almost always non-downtown rooms available after the lottery.
You can look through some of the previous hotel discussion threads to see what the trends were.

And don't forget that there may also be a few hotel rooms offered up here on this sight after the lottery that people just don't need.

So even if you don't get what you want, you should be able to get something.
Good luck.

I am seriously considering putting my chances in with a buying group  that is here on FOCCI. Which thread would that be on? 😊

I don't think that there are separate buying groups set up for hotel rooms.
If you are currently a member of a badge buying group, I would check there first.

As Steve said, there aren't buying groups. We generally have a separate board that opens up for hotel lottery related posts. Just keep an eye out as time draws nearer. There will be plenty of notice that plans are ramping up as we get dates from CCI.

Are we expecting for downtown hotel rates to go up this year?

For the most part, the rates for 2016 and 2017 we're about the same so I'm hoping that continues for this year.

CCI is really great about negotiating to keep hotels affordable! I don't remember is this is the second year of a two year contract.... but it might be. If so then costs shouldn't go up a lot. <<<--- pure speculation on my part!
