Hi, this is my first time attending comic con. My question is why do people book backup hotels? If, I have one prepaid right now, what's the concern?

Good question. There will be an official hotel "lottery" later on, which is where the bulk of the hotel rooms are booked, especially for the downtown hotels. Some people will book a backup hotel with a cancelable reservation outside of the official system in case they don't get something they want in the lottery.

Are the lottery hotels usually cheaper than those outside the lottery?

Depends where the hotels are.  For downtown hotels, there are not many rooms available outside the lottery block for reasonable rates.

And it will all shortly begin once again.....let us pray to the comic con gods to allow us forum members to be blessed with all our choice picks for downtown hotels. Let us offer up a Conan pop to be burnt in praise of the comic con gods to once again offer us their blessing. I guess that's my way of saying good luck in the coming months, my hopes are everyone gets their picks and have another fantastic con.

Yes. Here is the link for last year's hotel prices: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

This is our first time attending SDCC, and I was able to get all 5 days for my sister and i.
We went to NYCC2017 (first time too), and we got the Sheraton Lincoln Harbor Hotel just by booking it on their website.
Easy-Peasy.

This Hotelpocalypse thing has me more freaked out than the Open Reg did. :D
I really want to stay downtown, and I've picked 11 hotels so far by reading the reviews here.
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for providing so much info.
Fingers crossed.

Good luck! And yeah, the hotel sale is one of the most stressful things for a lot of people. It used to be even worse, since up until a few years ago it mattered how quickly you filled out the form. Now that's not an issue and there is a lot more luck involved, but it's still pretty stressful.

I hope so!!! Even just knowing when it would happen, even if that's still months away, would be an improvement...

Although of course what I really want is just for it to happen as soon as possible so we can get it over with.

Here's a generic question. We're in a different situation than previous year, my son and I will do the whole con but my wife and daughter may only do the weekend, or not at all. The tricky thing is that we probably won't know what they are going to do until late June/early July.

If I reserve a room through the lottery for 4 people, will they be cool with it if only 2 end up staying there? Or if we have 2 people there for some of the stay and 4 for the other days?

I would just pay attention to the room capacity listings for the hotels, and get one that allows up to 4. I would reserve for 2, but maybe check with the hotel on their policy for adding more guests.

As long as the room officially sleeps at least 4, the hotel won't care if you have less people there some of the days. I would think the problem would lie more in convincing the hotel not to charge you the 4-person rate for the nights where you only have two people.
