You can't polish a turd. You can try but it will still be a turd.

I think I may be the only person here who never had to read this book.  Went to public school in the 90's and early 2000's, too.  *shrug*

Seems like I dodged a bullet.

I'm fairly neutral about the book. I didn't mind doing it in school, and I quite like the ending but in retrospect there are just so many more interesting books that you could do in a classroom. The aforementioned Pincher Martin for example, which has an even better ending.

As for the new film, I hope it's good, we could use more good things. And maybe the people making it have a story they want to share and this is the best way to do it. I'm not overly optimistic, but sometimes we get surprised. I couldn't have imagined that the Fargo tv series would be anything but a mess, never more happy to be wrong :)

If I had just read it on my own, I would have still hated it, but the endless classroom torture of pink mountain motifs and the end of innocence... And Piggy's glasses scattering the end of intellectualism... And Sam'nEric chasing after everyone...  Ugh!  This book was of particular pain for me.  I think I'm scarred for life.

To Kill a Mocking Bird I got and loved, but not the Lord of the Flies.  I think I need to watch something completely vapid to erase this from my brain...  Fate of the Furious it is!  :)

Can anyone please post anything here?  I would like to continue ranting about how much I hate this book.  :)

To Kill a Mocking Bird I got and loved, but not the Lord of the Flies.

I went to a public school in Honolulu during the second half of my freshman year and we got to both read and see the movie version of "Mocking Bird."  I liked "Mocking Bird" more because it was American whereas LOTF was more British-oriented.

Afterwards I went to summer school in Honolulu and had to read LOTF a second time.  I thought the local instructor's interpretation of LOTF was pretty funny though.  She called Jack "macho," lol.

I went back and read all the mid school/high school books in my 20's and loved Mockingbird.  Wait, Mockingbird, Little finger?...

My summer school in Honolulu was at Punahou School, the private high school that Obama graduated from in 1979.  I just missed him by a month.

Sorry, should have explained.  It's basically the Simpsons version of Lord of the Flies. And a cautionary tale about the dangers of grapefruit :)

Also, To the Ends of the Earth is on Netflix. It's based on some of Wm Golding's later books. These kind of explore some of the same themes but much better IMHO. Plus Sam Neill and some young Benedict Cumberbatch.

Whether or not its an all-girls cast doesn't bother me as much as having to read that book in grade school lol.

Rereading my previous post I realize that if I am recommending a mini-series I should probably lead with "young Benedict Cumberbatch."  (I guess he wasn't that young, pre-movie career in any case.)

I've been surprised at how strongly people feel about the book so I went back and read it again this past weekend. I still wouldn't put it on my list of favorites but I don't think it's a bad book at all. I'm curious as to what it is that people don't like, aside from having to read it in school of course :)

In my case, a lot of my hatred comes from having to read it twice. Like, I didn't like it the first time, and then when I had to read it again, it just amplified my dislike. (I read it in 6th grade and 10th grade. Enough time between that I had to reread it to pass tests.) But for me, I didn't like it because everyone annoyed me and then they killed the one character I actually liked.
