Already have a backup in place. Most likely won't go through the hotel lottery next year, after my maiden experience this year was...less than satisfactory.

Edit: Red Roof Inn Downtown and Motel 6 downtown currently have rooms available for the Wednesday to Sunday of next year.
Just in case.

Also the MGH can be booked right now, just obviously not at the con rate.

MGH can be but you have to pay for the full stay now and it's nonrefundable. I would wait. Btw, their rate has gone up.

Mine doesn't open up completely until Wednesday (maybe Tuesday night). I was so involved in this year's con,at that point, that I forgot. I am going to set a reminder next time!
Not super worried about it, at this point.

Out of curiosity, I looked up the Pendry and it already shows "unavailable".  That hotel was nothing but TV networks, it seems.

I went by the Pendry and asked at the concierge during the con. He said that they had been 'selective' about whom they let stay there during the con. It sounded to me like they got some sweet studio deals and were never part of the CCI room block at all. Maybe he appeased CCI by letting some of the 'invited guests' stay there?

John Rogers (president of CCI) was staying at the MMM. We ran into him there realllly early in the morning.

Booked the Red Roof Inn Downtown from EscoBlades' post. My group agreed that we wouldn't mind staying further out, and could definitely just walk it or shuttle in closer.

Of note, it looks like Hotel Z (my usual back-up since they opened) are now requiring a minimum stay (as far as I can tell it's it's 5 nights min.) to stay through all of the convention nights. Additionally, it's $999/night. It was the same when I checked Thursday night. That's for only one bed per room ^^;

Of course, MGH, Westin Downtown (and maybe a few others) are available, but for crazy prices. Apparently one of the girls my friend stays with, always books a suite with MGH for next year when they check-out from the convention, and then just lets them come along. They have no idea how she affords the regular price, but I guess that works for them lol. Honestly I'd probably consider it if I was at least working at the moment, ugh.

Stayed at the Motel 6 this year, and it was good for what i payed and needed it to do (pretty much a place to rest my head)

So went ahead and booked that again for next year. Unless something cheaper comes through downtown via Loyalty programmes I'm a part of, i'm all set :)

Thanks for the report-that was also my backup. At least now I know if I had remembered, it would have been too much for a backup. What a shame that they gave in to the gouging. When we stayed there, it was only $245 per night. It was more the next year (we didn't stay, but they were my backup). I understand a price increase, but sheesh!

Yeah, it's been mine for two years now. Last year, it was about $350/night, which was generally in-line (ish) with Gaslamp hotels through SDCC. I just booked it quite late, I think in October or November of 2015. For the back-up for SDCC 2017, I booked it literally a day or two post SDCC 2016, and it was about $550/night for convention nights, but it was a King Suite to fit 4 people. The regular rooms were about $100 less but it was only a single bed. Ridiculous, but we were generally willing to pay it, if the lottery didn't pan out, to be 3-4 blocks away because there were four of us.

I'm going to keep an eye on it to see if it'll change, because I'm wondering if it's just a place-holder amount. It's also possible they reached a block deal with CCI for next year and that's why it's a ridiculous price per night, like the other official CCI hotels have for rooms that aren't in that block. I know they generally have specific years that they're renegotiating contracts, but there is also probably exceptions like new hotels etc.
