Con Diary: Boston Comic Con – Day 2 Saturday

By: Alyssa

While yesterday belonged to comics and Frank Miller, today is Celebrity appearances and Cosplay.  With the focus on Cosplay today there are a lot of panels devoted to the topic ranging from introduction to cosplay, casting & molding, makeup, and cosplay celebs.

First thing though… DON’T spill the coffee on the Art I’ve brought to be signed.

I had the opportunity to attend the Shatner VIP panel. Shatner came on stage and spoke for 15 mins about sports.  Riffing on Tom Brady & the LA Rams team that moved and is coming back etc all.  image

The mayor of Boston Marty Welsh came on stage and proclaimed it Shatner day.

At which point everyone left the stage. Suffice to say, everyone who bought the VIP package for $350 is very very upset as they had been expecting a full panel with Q&A.

I was able to get a minute with the manager of the room, Eric Korpi, who essentially said there was a miss-communication, Shatner thought the panel was over when he received the award. Eric  was very understanding and helpful in explaining but essentially unable to do anything. I have to think BCC will do its best to address the issue with the Shatner VIP’s. The entire incident tipped the balance and I decided to not do a photo opp or get a signature with Bill Shatner.

BCC is introducing a new space on the floor called– CosSpace.  From the Boston Comic Con web site:

CosSpace is a self-contained area and event feature dedicated to cosplay, costume design and cosplayers.  Featuring:

  • More than 40 cosplay-focused vendors from prop makers, costume designers, wigs and mask makers
  • A special Cosplay Repair Station
  • A photo area, sponsored by Nerd Caliber, to take your best cosplay shots
  • Special appearances by our cosplay guests
  • Registration and information desks for the Annual Costume Contest and the Kids Cosplay Contest.

Here are pictures of the area on a Saturday.

Timagehere were a lot of table devoted to supplying elements for cosplaying, contacts, ears & wigs.  There were also full costumes and even a professional photographer who took a series of photos of a cosplayer. I didn’t attend any of the panels but they were about cosplaying 101, make up, molding and a few spotlights on Cos-players.image

The weather has been comparable to SDCC 2016, not quite as hot but certainly as humid- the Convention center doesn’t do a well with the cooling either …. I started wearing glasses just before Con. I had forgotten  how hot & sweaty plastic frames can be.  Behind me is a huge line of folks waiting to get into the con at 11 am.

I spent the rest of the day on the floor, collecting signatures from comic creators & buying art & books. The most notable was Sam Kieth’s amazing art.  Kieth’s credits include Mage, Fish Police, The Maxx, & The Sandman to name a few. Click for more info

I also was able to get a sketch from David Lloyd.  He chose to do his iconic character from V for Vendetta with Alan Moore.  I have been working on getting comic creators signatures on my BCC poster.  I posted a picture of the early poster yesterday but here’s a before and after. The later is obviously the poster at the end of the day today.

Brian Azzarello

Marv Wolfman

John Cassady

Howard Chaykin

Art Adams

Berni Wrightson

Sam Kieth

Last task of the day was picking up the massive Artist Edition book of Batman The Dark Knight Returns. The thing probably weights 10 pounds and it’s signed by Frank Miller. Thankfully the vendor was happy to take my money earlier in the day and hold the book till closing. In general that is the type of con BCC is, happy to be dealing with folks who understand how con’s work & willing to deal within limits.                         image

I do notice that this post begins and ends with drinks-  coffee for the morning and martini’s for the evening.

One last day at con on Sunday. On the schedule in no particular order is  the CupOTea Hangout at 10 am PT, 1 pm ET, getting Scott Snyders signature on my poster, go to the Ben McKenzie panel and decide on a couple of pieces of art by Nick Bradshaw/Sam Kieth and a few other smaller items. I may also look at some silver age comics…. and stay for the cosplay contest.

Alyssa bought her first comic at age 7 and was hooked. She has collected comics most of her life. Recently, she has branched out to comic art and books and the occasional Lego set. She goes to as many cons as she can and enjoys the 'long form' storytelling of the television medium. She is also a foodie and is always up for trying new and different food.
