Next Week in TV: 3/29 Legion, Bones, and Grimm

By Alyssa & DRWHO42

Last week provided us with an interesting variety of shows. Into the Badlands’ return was marked with great martial arts as well as a few surprises. Based on what we saw on Sunday Season 2 should not disappoint. The Flash/Supergirl crossover was a little bit of a departure from the heroic serial and it was special treat for many of us. Arrow was insightful and delved deeper into the emotion motivation of Oliver Queen to wearing his ‘hood’.

The week is light in the realm of new entries but there are a few notable entries. Jenna Elfman’s Imaginary Mary on ABC is one of the standouts with checking out. On Netflix Five Came Back: A Story Of Hollywood And The Second World War that is getting a lot of positive buzz. The series focuses on five iconic directors who became ‘cameras for hire’ to create newsreels for the US Military as part of the war effort. In an ingenious casting move, the creators have enlisted some of the top directors to provide commentary about their icons of the past cinematic generation. Guillermo Del Toro provides commentary and insight on Frank Capra, Paul Greengrass on John Ford, Francis Ford Coppola on John Huston, Lawrence Kasdan on George Stevens, and Steven Spielberg on William Wyler. The series is based on Mark Harris’ 2014 book Five Came Back: A Story Of Hollywood And The Second World War and is narrated by actress Meryl Streep. This should appeal to cinema buffs and as well as those interested in WWII. We highly recommend giving this a try.

This week marks the series finales for Grimm and Bones. Both had impressive and successful runs with Bones pulling in 12 seasons while Grimm hunted for 6 seasons. David Boreanaz fans may not have to wait too long to see him onscreen again because he signed on to an untitled Navy Seal pilot for CBS this week.

Lastly, this week also marks the first season finale for Legion. This mind-bending series is, by far, one of the most creative this season. Fans of this series will be happy to know that it will be back for a second season.

NETFLIX Five Came Back: Complete First Season [Series Premiere]

Journalist and author Mark Harris’ “Five Came Back: A Story of Hollywood and the Second World War,” a 500-page examination of five filmmakers — Frank Capra, John Ford, John Huston, George Stevens and William Wyler — and their documentary exploits during World War II, was born out of a personal connection and a professional curiosity.

“My father had been a World War II veteran — he died when I was young,” Harris recalls. “As I got older, I realized I had ignored his war stories. And I came to realize World War II and World War II movies were my weak spot, my big gap in American history.”

His first instincts were as a film historian, peeling back the layers of five men changed by global conflict, who created vital work on the front lines and then came back to America to produce the deepest, most profound work of their careers. But he also couldn’t help but see the potential for a documentary handling of the material.

On March 31, three years after the book’s publication, Netflix will premiere a three-part adaptation of the tome, directed by Laurent Bouzereau. Five modern filmmakers serve as proxy guides for the classic quintet: Guillermo Del Toro (Capra), Paul Greengrass (Ford), Francis Ford Coppola (Huston), Lawrence Kasdan (Stevens) and Steven Spielberg (Wyler). The series is narrated by actress Meryl Streep. To read more   To watch trailer
