This year one SDCC offsite has opened early and is giving locals or those making the trip to SDCC early a chance for sneak peak inside before the crowds are sure to make this one another line wait. I had a chance to check out The Laika Experience on its opening night, July 14th in San Diego. It was well worth the trip downtown to enjoy this exhibit, without the influx of SDCC crowds, and be able to take my time for photos and ask some questions.

The exhibit has 4 “rooms” with the actual puppets used in each of Laika’s 4 feature films: Coraline, Paranorman, BoxTrolls, and Kubo and the Two Strings. It is really something to see the originals from these beautiful and amazing films. A guide brings you through each one of the rooms and explains each film and how the studio evolved from each film to the next. You learn how the puppets work and I even got the rare opportunity to touch one and see inside the head for a peek at how the eyes work!

There is a small merchandise area in the front with some near SD exclusives featuring the characters standing under an iconic Gaslamp lamp with SDCC banners. They will also have very limited edition Mondo posters that will not be sold at the Mondo booth on the SDCC show floor.

If you love Laika, you will love this. Even if you haven’t seen the films, you will enjoy it. I took a friend who had seen none of the films and she had a great time and is now very interested in seeing them. This offsite is a special opportunity to get a glimpse behind the scenes of these magical films.

Here are some pictures from the offsite:
