The Tick Premiere Event and Review

By Boukenred

In a world where danger lurks around every corner, there are Superheroes to protect you from the danger and deliver Justice throughout our daily lives. Amazon Prime Video brings to you a satirical superhero, The Tick; based on the comic book created by Ben Edlund and the hit cartoon series from the 90’s. This will be The Tick’s second incarnation as a live action series, but this time around the it will have a darker tone. The series stars Peter Serafinowicz as The Tick, Griffin Newman as Arthur Everest, Valorie Curry, Jackie Earle Haley, Yara Martinez, Brendan Hines, Scott Speiser, and Michael Cerveris.

Arthur Everest (Griffin Newman) lives an ordinary life as an accountant in the city; until one day, he encounters a superhero named The Tick (Peter Serafinowicz). The Tick then sees a great potential in Arthur to be the next Superhero; however, Arthur thinks otherwise and is afraid of the idea of being a Superhero. The Tick tells Arthur he needs to pick up the call from destiny and answer her by embracing the role he was born to be. He then leaves Arthur with a suitcase; containing inside is a crime fighting uniform that fits Arthur perfectly.

At the Amazon Prime Member premiere, audiences were given a preview of episodes two and three. Audiences were not shown the first episode, since the pilot has been available to viewers since last year.

Episode 2 and 3 focus on Arthur to either embrace his role of Superhero as The Tick suggests, or to continue to live his ordinary civilian life. We also learn why The Tick needs Arthur as his partner, despite Arthur’s attempts to try to get rid of him. The villains of the series will also raise the threat levels in the city, and it will be up to The Tick and Arthur to save the city together.

This time around the series is more grounded with a mature tone, but it still keeps the humor that the series is known for. It may take a while to get used to the tone of the series but once we got accustomed to the balance between ‘being serious’ and ‘light-hearted’, it actually feels natural combining the two elements.

Peter Serafinowicz as The Tick has a great tone of voice with a mix of heroic and comedy elements. It  helps the viewer to establish him as The Tick immediately. With Peter’s performances, we see a great personality of light-and-day contrasting with a dark tones of the surrounding environment. Griffin Newman’s as Arthur will probably be the character that viewers can relate to the most; with his character established as the every-man, his role throughout the series is focused on him as the central character. Together, both actors prove to be a great dynamic duo as they play off each other, as both utilize a great comedic formula of straight-man and funny-man, while still delivering a great action-packed performance.

Whether you’re a fan of The Tick comics, the cartoon series, or the previous live action series, you will enjoy this series. While the series may have a different approach than its previous incantation, this series will be a hit on its own. We enjoyed the exciting, comedic adventure the series offered, while still delivering a great comedy. So be sure to answer the call of Justice; The Tick will premiere on August 25th, exclusively for Amazon Prime Video.
