Next Week in TV 3/4: The Oscars & Jessica Jones

By Alyssa, Mario Wario, and DRWHO42

Tonight we celebrate the past year in movies with Jimmy Kimmel hosting the 90th Academy Awards ceremony. While we are sure the Academy will be promoting diversity and gender equality, we hope the positive reactions to Black Panther and the #MeToo movement will ensure that Hollywood aggressively continues to take the high road. We expect numerous statements from the guests throughout the evening.

Later in the week, we are treated to the second season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones on Netflix. Unlike its debut in 2015, as a society, we can also see the series through the lens of the #MeToo movement. For instance, do we see Jessica Jones as the beacon of the #MeToo movement, or a damaged superhero? As of yet Marvel Studios has not fully embraced the strong female lead roles. Yes, we are still waiting for a Black Widow movie. Unfortunately, we do not think Jessica Jones will be that beacon, simply a superhero with PTSD dealing with her issues. Regardless, the early reviews have been positive, so we suggest putting this on the short list for viewing.

Speaking of a beacon for the #MeToo movement, a recently debuted series on NBC, Good Girls is riveting. Staring Christina Hendricks [Firefly, Mad Men], Retta [Parks and Recreation] and Mae Whitman [Arrested Development, The DUFF]. It follows three women encountering and solving life problems by using uncommon solutions. It remains to be seen if the writing can maintain the believability and Thelma & Louise/Breaking Bad vibe. However the cast certainly delivers in a big way.

Another new series premiering on Hulu is a bit more somber, Hard Sun. Basically, the plot involves two cops one good, one corrupt. They must learn to work together but what is the point when the world will end in 5 years? It’s an interesting, gritty, rough look on how society maintains a system when a catastrophe is about to strike. The first season, comprising of 6 episodes, will be available on Wednesday.

Netflix, continues to support the anime genre with releasing the first season of A.I.C.O. Incarnation. We are also treated to the second seasons of Trolls on Netflix and Sneaky Pete on Amazon Prime. Sneaky Pete is on our & critics shortlist of series to catch up on. ABC’s Agents of Shield is celebrating a huge milestone of its 100th episode. Sadly, we must say goodbye to Falling Water as it wraps up its second season.

However, the most tearful goodbye is reserved for the series finale of Star Wars Rebels. On March 5th, we get the last two episodes to conclude the series. It’s sad to say goodbye to such an amazing series that provided so many new things to the Star Wars universe. That being said, we can’t wait to see how it all ends and to see how these two episodes connect to the movies and books. It should be noted, thanks to Rogue One and one Forces of Destiny short, we know who survives, but as for everyone else…who knows. So, sit back and relax and enjoy the series for one final time. Dave Filoni probably saved the best for last.

NBC Champions [Series Premiere]

“Champions” is a half-hour, single-camera comedy that centers on Vince (Anders Holm, “The Mindy Project,” “Workaholics”), a washed-up high school baseball star who reluctantly gave up his dreams to take over the family gym in Brooklyn.
Vince lives with his sweet, naive younger brother, Matthew (Andy Favreau, “Aquarius,” “The Mick”), and is on the verge of secretly selling the gym and moving to Florida when his high school fling, Priya (recurring guest star Kaling), unexpectedly drops off their 15-year-old son, Michael (J.J. Totah, “Other People,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming”), on his doorstep.
After raising Michael by herself for 15 years, Priya decided to move her talented and ambitious theater-kid son away from his sheltered life in Cleveland so he could attend a prestigious performing arts school in New York. While she loves her son deeply, she’s delighted at the chance to let Vince and Matthew do the parenting while Michael pursues his dreams. In addition to adjusting to his new home life in the Big Apple, Michael is now a small fish in a big pond and has a lot to overcome before he can make friends and win the EGOT that is his destiny.
Rigid and old-school, Vince has virtually nothing in common with his son, and in addition to balancing unruly employees and his sensitive brother’s smothering love, he must now learn to become a dad. Meanwhile, Matthew has always longed for a more complete home life, so when Michael shows up, it fills the nephew-sized hole in his heart and frees him to become the homemaker he was always meant to be.
