On May 10, 2018, Syfy cancelled the critically acclaimed and fan loved series The Expanse halfway through its third season. This created a firestorm of activity by the fans around the world to save the series. Clearly, Syfy did not realize they had awakened a sleeping giant.
The fans started their battle to save the series by taking to all social media platforms with the hashtag “#SaveTheExpanse.” In addition to the Twitter and Facebook campaign, fans also launched a petition on Change.org, which as the writing of this article had more than 82,000 signatures. One of the most innovative efforts by the fans was the creation of a GoFundMe campaign which raised over $3200. With these funds they hired a plane, which flew over the Amazon Studio headquarters in Los Angeles on May 15, 2018 with a banner that said “#Save The Expanse.” The fans have also created a website, https://savetheexpanse.org/, for all things related to saving The Expanse.
For the next episode of The Expanse on May, 16, 2018, the fans are planning a live tweet storm about the episode. The stars, crew, and fans from the US and Canada will be involved. The organizers of the Save The Expanse campaign have asked the fans to help save The Expanse by watching live. Here are the guidelines they provided.
- Watch live on cable, Hulu TV, YouTube TV, DirectTVNow, PSVue, etc. Even if you are not home, leave your TV on Syfy.
- DVR it! Watch it in the first 3 days after the broadcast in order to have impact. (I watch it live, DVR it to watch the next day, and I watch again with friends on Saturday night.)
- Watch the next day on the paid services like Amazon Prime and iTunes, etc.
- Keep your voice heard on social media. Keep showing your love and appreciation of The Expanse by continuously tweeting and posting about it on social media. Please use the hashtag, #SaveTheExpanse and/or #CantStopTheExpanse to assure that the Twitter algorithm counts the hits.
