Unfortunately, it is not clear that these changes to the inhabitants are for the best. But, first, let’s recap what happened in this episode.

One of the major events of the episode is when Lem reveals that he asked Kai to turn him human. From his psychic connection, Lem has gleaned the idea that Olivia wants children. Unfortunately for Lem, he did not discuss his decision with Olivia first. There is a very specific dynamic between the two of them, which Lem becoming human has altered. Although it is obvious that Lem made this major sacrifice out of love for Olivia, nothing is simple in Midnight.

This change opens a rift between Lem and Olivia but his joy at being human begins to override her misgivings, as well his true love for her. Lem’s change raises one of the quintessential questions in any relationship: what is a person willing to sacrifice for their loved one? The cost, for Lem, is substantial, since he chose to be a vampire for a reason. He wanted to gain power over his life. He gave up all of his power to become human so that he and Olivia could have a family. The loss of his vampire powers becomes relevant when Olivia learns that Madonna has been working for her father, Philip Charity (Michael J. Harney). Of course, when Olivia learns about her father spying on her, she has to confront him.

At Philip’s home, Olivia finds a scene from her childhood being played out. Philip has used dark magic to create a memory of a happy Christmas when the entire family was together. It really is startling to see how far her father has descended into a form of madness, to want to live in a fantasy world that has to be replenished with his and Olivia’s blood! Lem is unable to save Olivia from this macabre scenario without his vampire powers but he is able to contact Fiji for help before he is captured by Philip. Here is an immediate consequence of the decision he made, since he is helpless to save Olivia. Fortunately, for all of them, Fiji is able to save them but at a cost.

Fiji discovers a website for witches that she hoped would help her lift the curse. This website blocks her but in banishing Fiji from the website, a dark witch, Celeste Manfred, is alerted. Celeste is one of those campy characters that actors love to portray because there is no such thing as “chewing the scenery.” She is a dark witch who revels in the power and fringe benefits that this status bestows upon her. In fact, Celeste, who is dressed to the nines in haute couture fashion, voices the title of this episode. More importantly, she tells Fiji how to lift the curse: Fiji must embrace her dark side.

While she is hesitant, Fiji listens to Celeste, since Celeste is able to lift the curse for 48 hours while Fiji considers her proposal. Poor Fiji is so desperate that she actually considers the offer. However, can she trust a dark witch? What will it mean for her relationship with Bobo if she makes such a great sacrifice? From the Star Wars saga, we know that going to the dark side does not end well for anyone. However, before Fiji makes a decision, she is called to save Lem and Olivia from the clutches of Olivia’s father.

At Philip’s home, Fiji attempts to use light magic to stop Philip’s spell but her magic is too weak. She resorts to dark magic and it works. But there is an unforeseen side effect when Fiji uses dark magic: it seduces and excites her. She tells Bobo that she wants to take Celeste up on her offer. Bobo knows that this is a bad choice, but Fiji is willing to make the sacrifice. The problem is that she does not know the full cost of this decision. Meanwhile, Manfred is trying to solve a murder.

One of Kai’s assistants, Sequoia (Claire Bryett Andrew), is murdered in an apparent suicide by an invisible assailant. Eventually, the murderer is revealed to be the other assistant, Lyric (Chelsea Edmundson). Kai has been keeping a major secret, which both Lyric and Sequoia discover. They realize that Kai has kept all of the essences, which he withdrew from the sick and supernatural, in containers. Lyric used this supernatural essence to become invisible and murder her colleague.

This is a major shocker for Manfred, who is still carrying on his illicit affair with Patience. It is phenomenally stupid to give a person with such power a reason to hate you but Manfred seems oblivious to the risk. The other question is, what is Kai planning to do with these essences he has hidden? Are they somehow related to the supernatural head concealed behind the picture in his office?

In this episode, many truths were revealed. Olivia finally realized that the past is over and Lem is truly her family. Fiji discovered the true dark history of her family. However, in order to save her new family (Bobo), she believes that she has to embrace her dark side. Bobo, who truly loves her, does not want her to make this level of sacrifice for him but the dark side has already seduced Fiji. She should have remembered that old saying, “the road to hell is paved with good intentions.” And Kai is the enigma wrapped in a mystery. What happens to Manfred when Kai discovers the illicit love affair between him and Patience? What about the demon hunter and Joe? All of these storylines are converging for a devastating finale. Carmelo and Snyder are really delivering this season.
