Next Week in TV 6/16: Das Boot & Wigs or U-Boats, Drag Queens & Drunk History

By Alyssa, DRWHO42, & Mario Wario

Summer will officially start this week and television reflects on our busy seasonal convention schedules, with restrained offerings of course. There are a few hidden gems and a treasure trove of streaming series to dig into.

Paid streaming services offer a variety of events this week. Netflix’s Mr. Iglesias puts a stand-up comedian, Gabe Iglesias, in front of a classroom of smart misfits. Hulu responds with Das Boot, an 8-episode series set in 1942 set inside a Germain submarine. Wig on HBO promises drag queens and glitter. The show centers on New York’s Wigstock festival, which is the largest drag performance event ever staged. Drunk History returns for its 6th season premiere Tuesday night.

Finally, in the over-the-air world (OTA), ABC premiers two shows this week. The first is a lightweight, but action-packed summer popcorn series called Reef Break, which promises scantly clad pretty people, urgent intrigues and crazy scandals. The second ABC show called Grand Hotel is set in Miami, and it centers around the last family-run Grand Hotel in that area. Complete with the spoiled adult children, wealthy guests, upstairs/downstairs intrigue and, of course, mounting debt, this series promises to be interesting to watch. The plotlines for this ongoing series looks tasty.

While we have taken a step back from sports in recent weeks, the U.S. women’s national soccer team is in the World Cup. Of course, we are all in supporting the defending champs. The expectations are high for a good run, especially after the first game resulted in a 13-0 win over Thailand. It was the biggest defeat for any team in World Cup history. The U.S. women’s national team will now face Chile, and many can watch this game on TV at noon Eastern Time today (Sunday) on Fox. The team will also face Sweden on Thursday at 3 p.m ET on Fox.

If any new television show leaves you feeling a little underwhelmed, there’s plenty of good recently released streaming shows to check out. For example, Chernobyl, Handmaids Tale, Jessica Jones, Good Omens, and Catch-22 are all on our shortlists.

The week ahead looks great, but the TV conversation does not end there. Click here to join the chat that’s on the FoCC forum. Happy Father’s Day to all the good dads out there!

This would soon become an annual drag bacchanal, which lasted until 2001. Alyssa bought her first comic at age 7 and was hooked. She has collected comics most of her life. Recently, she has branched out to comic art and books and the occasional Lego set. She goes to as many cons as she can and enjoys the 'long form' storytelling of the television medium. She is also a foodie and is always up for trying new and different food.
