Next Week in TV 9/22: A tidal wave of great television awaits us to explore

By DRWHO42, Mario Wario, & Alyssa

The fall TV season kicks off this week, with a literal tsunami of new series and season premieres. The week starts off stars, fashion, and statues with the 71st annual Primetime Emmy Awards. The nominees are all very deserving of recognition, however, Bodyguard, Chernobyl, Russian Doll, Fleabag, Veep, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Killing Eve, Better Call Saul, Killing Eve; Game of Thrones, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Bill Hader, Jodie Comer, and Sandra Oh, are on our wish list to take home a Emmy.

9-1-1 kicks offs its third season this Monday with another action-packed hour, which will find our team of first responders dealing with the aftermath of a tsunami. Later that evening the new criminal psychology-themed series titled Prodigal Son, featuring Tom Payne (The Walking Dead) and Michael Sheen (Good Omens). This series looks very interesting and we are going to give it a shot, due to the cast as well as its premise.

For those interest in legal dramas, All Rise on CBS and Bluff City Law on NBC are very interesting options to add to your watch list. All Rise centers on the lives of people who work in a courthouse. Bluff City Law features the return of Jimmy Smits to the court room as a part of a father and daughter legal team.

Tuesday features the return of the popular drama This is Us, along with New Amsterdam on NBC. CBS will reopen the doors of FBI as it returns for its second season. ABC will unveil its comedy lineup with The Conners, new series Mixed-ish, and Black-ish. Later Tuesday evening, Emergence makes its debut on ABC and based on the trailers and sneak peeks we are placing this high on recommendation list this week. The series, which is billed as a thriller, centers on a mysterious girl and the person who finds herself in the position of protecting her. The series also features Donald Faison (Scrubs), however, since the tone of the series is different, it will allow viewers to experience something different. DRWHO42 watched the pilot episode and enjoyed it. Stay tuned for his upcoming article on the series.

NBC’s slate of Chicago-based series all return this Wednesday. If you are looking for some humor to get you over the ‘hump day,’ The Goldbergs, Modern Family, South Park, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia would be great options to add to your viewing list.

Cobie Smulders returns to network television as a private investigator in Stumptown. This new series may seem like a change of pace for Smulders compared to How I Met Your Mother, however, from what we have seen, Stumptown looks quite interesting thanks to its premise. Lastly, the long-running legal series, Suits, comes to an end this Wednesday evening.

Thursday night will feature the return of Young Sheldon, The Good Place, Superstore, How to Get Away with Murder, Law and Order: SVU, and Grey’s Anatomy. If you subscribe to Shudder and love horror, Creepshow should be right up your alley. An added bonus to the Thursday night lineup is the premiere of Evil. This series, which stars Mike Colter (Luke Cage) and Michael Emerson (Lost, Person of Interest), is a physiological mystery series that touches on the supernatural. The trailer for Evil gave us goosebumps and are placing this series high on our recommendation list for this week.

Friday is a time to celebrate the end of the workweek and the return of Hawaii Five-0, for its tenth season, and Magnum P.I. presents a nice way to unwind with action mixed with the allure of Hawaii.  Also returning that night are Blue Bloods, Fresh off the Boat, and Van Helsing.

Saturday caps off the week with college football, relaxation, and the season premiere of Saturday Night Live. Woody Harrelson kicks off the season as the host, while the lineup of hosts this season features a number of familiar faces, including Eddie Murphy.
