FoCC Gaming News – New PlayStation 5 Information

At long last, gamers have finally learned more about Sony’s next-gen console, the PlayStation 5. The information was revealed on the PlayStation Blog, with PS5 lead system architect Mark Cerny giving gamers a taste of things to come and what to expect from Sony’s new console.

First, here are the full specs of the PlayStation 5 via the PlayStation Blog:

  • CPU: CPU: x86-64-AMD Ryzen “Zen 2”
  • CPU: 8 Cores / 16 Threads; Variable frequency, up to 3.5 GHz
  • GPU: AMD Radeon RDNA 2-based graphics engine; Ray Tracing Acceleration; Variable frequency, up to 2.23 GHz (10.3 TFLOPS)
  • System Memory: GDDR6 16 GB, 448GB/s Bandwidth
  • SSD: 825GB; 5.5GB/s Read Bandwidth
  • PS5 Game Disc: Ultra HD Blu-ray, up to 100GB/disc
  • Video Out: 4K 120Hz, TVs, 8K TVs, VRR (specified by HDMI ver.2.1)
  • Audio: “Tempest” 3D AudioTech

Cerny stated that Sony listened to the developers, making sure that the PS5’s tech allowed for a quicker turnaround during the learning period, unlike what was seen with the PS4 (supposedly, under a month for the PS5; PS4 was 1-2 months). The solid state drive (SSD) was the most-requested feature that developers wanted, for better performance, and Cerny sees this technology as a game changer. For example, the PS4 uses a HDD and its bandwidth is 50-100 MB/s, while the (target) speed of the PS5 is 5GB/s (at least); the seek time is 2-50 milliseconds on the PS4, but is “instantaneous” on the brand-new console. The PS5’s load times are 0.27 seconds for 2GB content. The new SSD also uses a ‘custom flash controller’ feature, which is 825 GB, to further help the PS5’s performances; memory is expandable on the new console, too, with external HDD. Overall, according to Cerny, using a SSD is all about having “ultra fast boot, no load screens, ultra high-speed streaming, de-duplicate game date” and “no long patch installs,” too.

There will be backward compatibility!! It was confirmed today that PS4’s top 100 games ranked by playtime will be playable, with nearly all supported at system launch, although PS3, PS2, and PS1 games were not mentioned. I am guessing that issue will be announced later? Hopefully, all previous PlayStation games will be compatible, but we shall see.

It was also revealed that the geometry engine and ray tracing will be major features on the PS5, while making sure gamers will have great audio with 3D audio (Tempest). As for the GPU, with any new console, it will be something much more powerful compared to the previous PS4 console (going by the specs above). No other information was shared, including the PS5’s price point (I’m guessing it will be $499) and what the console itself will look like. We already know that the PS5 is still scheduled for a late 2020 release, and apparently that has not changed. (If you want to watch the entire presentation, the video is available below.)

 

In general, March 18th’s 52-minute reveal event was really about the specs, such as the SSD, more than anything else.
