Next Week in TV 5/17: Snowpiercer, The 100, and Stargirl Supercharges the Lineup

DRWHO42, Scott, & Alyssa

The lineup this week may be dominated by season finales, but there are a few new premieres that will offer something new and exciting for your viewing pleasure. We also say so long this week to Batwoman, Supergirl, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Call the Midwife, S.W.A.T, and Motherland: Fort Salem.

Yet as we enter this point of the year, each year the networks create a lot of buzz for their new series announcements and fall TV schedule news. For instance, we learned from The CW that we will have to wait a few extra months for the return of the Arrowverse, as well as a few others including Riverdale. These series are scheduled to return in January 2021, and while we are a little surprised with the delay, we do understand the reasons behind it.

Then there are three premieres airing this week, and all three should be added to your viewing list. First up is TNT’s Snowpiercer, which arrives on TNT this Sunday evening. The series, created for television by Graeme Manson (Orphan Black), delves into the lives of people who live on a perpetually moving 1,000 car train in an icy post-apocalyptic world. The cast list for this series is stellar and it stars Jennifer Connelly, Deveed Diggs, and Steven Ogg. Do note that it has taken some time for this series to make its debut, thus we are excited to see how this first season unfolds, as well as how well it compares to the movie version from 2013.

Stargirl is premiering on The CW this Monday night. Do note that the character was briefly teased in Crisis on Infinite Earths; it looks like the series wants to offer something new and lighter compared to its sister DC series. Stargirl centers on a high school student named Courtney Whitmore (played by Brec Bassinger), who comes across a magical staff that gives her superpowers. She then joins the ’Justice Society of America’ in their fight against the ’Injustice Society’. There are a few familiar names in the cast, such as Luke Wilson, Joel McHale, and Henry Thomas.

The 100 kicks off its seventh and final season on Wednesday. This series has set itself apart as a rugged tale of survival where the choices the characters make do come with significant costs, which can carry substantial emotional weight later. Lastly, we are waiting on word from The CW on whether the prequel spinoff series will receive a green light by the network, eventually.

The annual fundraising event to combat child poverty called Red Nose Day is this Thursday. The format will be different from past years, due to current circumstances, although this is a very worthy cause and we encourage you to tune in, and if you can make a donation as well.

That’s all for this week. Until next time, stay safe and enjoy this upcoming week on TV!
