Next Week in TV 8/9: The Final Mission for Agents of SHIELD

By DRWHO42 & Scott C.

All good things must eventually come to an end. 2020 has witnessed a few notable television departures such as Arrow, The Good Place, VikingsStrike Back, Blindspot, The Rain, and in 2021, we will see Lost In Space complete its journey to set off into the sunset. This week sees Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD ending its remarkable seven-season run. This run helped establish the Marvel TV empire and created a business case for production and television executives to greenlit the ever-growing slate of heroic and sci-fi series on networks and many streaming platforms.

Agents of SHIELD also charted out its course and identity with the occasional references to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Let’s not forget about the cameos, which included Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury or Jaime Alexander’s Lady Sif. The blog will miss this special series dearly, but we have a two-hour series finale to look forward to this week (Wednesday, August 12th, at 9 p.m. ET on ABC), before we say our final goodbyes to team SHIELD.

Discovery, meanwhile, kicks off its annual shark-filled week of programming this Sunday, to inform viewers on various topics surrounding this marine species, mixed in with a little entertainment. The line up looks exciting (click here for more details), and to make it more interesting, Mike Tyson, Will Smith, and Shaquille O’Neal will be joining in on the fun. While we are on the topic, NatGeo has already kicked off their shark-themed programming recently, and it set to continue for the next few weeks. By the end of the month, the number of hours dedicated to sharks will be an impressive 100 hours!

Looking back to last week, Britannia made its debut on EPIX and brought an impressively intimidating David Morrisey to our screens once again as a Roman General. While this first episode served to establish the premise of the series from what we have seen so far, it has a great blend of Celtic mysticism with visuals reminiscent of the film 300. The series’ beautiful scenery stands out; some of us here on the blog are already thinking about visiting the many locations shown in the show as possible vacation destinations, once the pandemic is over, of course.

This week sees both Stargirl, and The Alienist concluding their current seasons. The second season run for The Alienist may feel short but is in part to the compressed airing schedule. If you have missed anything, you can catch up on the TNT app or going to HBO Max.

In other TV news, Sirens, the Freeform mermaid series, was canceled along with Hulu’s High Fidelity. The trailer for Ridley Scott’s Raised by Wolves will be set in a future where a group of children survivors is raised and taught by a caretaker who is guarding a secret. Also of interest is the trailer for Ratched, which stars Sarah Paulson as a nurse in a psychiatric hospital. Both series look interesting. Lastly, Michelle Gomez (Doctor Who, Chilling Tales of Sabrina) is joining the cast of Kaley Cuoco’s (Big Bang Theory) The Flight Attendant

BBC America recently announced this week that a new original series is in the works, which means we are adding it to our radar now, and that series is called The Watch. This series, which is as a fantasy show with comedic undertones, centers on an unlikely group of misfits who band together to thwart a scheme to resurrect a great dragon and to save the world in the process. The series will not debut until 2021, but we are excited by the premise, so the blog cannot wait to see it as soon as possible.

That is all for this week. Happy Shark Week, everyone!
