Next Week in TV 12/13: Alfred Pennyworth is Back, and The Mandalorian’s Season Two Finale

By DRWHO42 & Scott C.

So, do you need a break from holiday shopping and festivities? If the answer is yes, the week ahead in TV has several options to help you out, including the second season of Pennyworth and the return of The Expanse!

Starting early Sunday morning, AMC’s The Walking Dead returns to action with a little bit of a twist: a holiday special?!?! Yes, this special edition of Talking Dead on AMC+ will feature interviews with the cast and producers of the series, as they reflect on the show and how everyone celebrates the holidays. Later into the day, Epix’s Pennyworth, starring Jack Bannon, returns for a second season at 9 p.m. ET. The trailer for the second season looks good, which means we are definitely looking forward to seeing what happens next in the show after watching last season’s cliffhanger. This second season does have a baby on the way for Martha Kane (Emma Paetz) and Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge). Overall, we will let you guess who the baby will become later in its adulthood.

Early Wednesday morning sees Amazon’s The Expanse return for a fifth season. We also have Micpea’s non-spoiler review of the season premiere, and we recommend that you check that out as soon as possible, and be on the lookout for a follow-up of that article coming out soon that has interviews from the cast. Lastly, take note that next season (season six) will be the show’s last one.

Early Thursday morning will also feature the series premiere of The Stand on CBS All Access and the season one finale of Kalel Cuoco’s The Flight Attendant on HBO Max. The limited-run edition of The Stand, based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name, features many notables, including Whoopi Goldberg, Alexander Skarsgard, and James Marsden.

The abbreviated fall television season is continuing its recent trend of winding down for the holiday season. This week the list of fall finales includes NCIS: Los AngelesNCIS: New OrleansNeighborhoodAll RiseBullBig SkySeal Team, S.W.A.T.Station 19, and Grey’s Anatomy.

Then we have the Disney+ Star Wars streaming television series sensation, The Mandalorian, which concludes its second season this week (Friday; 3 a.m. ET). Do note that the long wait of season three will be a full year; the third season debuts Christmas 2021.

In entertainment news, The CW released new pictures for their new series Superman and Lois, which stars Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch. This series takes flight on February 23, 2021.

Game of Thrones fans anxiously waiting for the HBO prequel series, House of the Dragon, were treated with some casting news this past Friday: Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, and Olivia Cook are joining the show’s cast list. Then we had Smith saying on GalaxyCon recently that his character, Daemon Targaryen, might be riding a few dragons in the new show. Overall, sign us all up for that dragon ride!

Disney, meanwhile, dropped the proverbial microphone with a four-hour investor presentation this past week, which had the look and feel of San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H.

Here is a shortlist of the highlights:

– The Star War TV universe expands a bit more with Rangers of the New RepublicAndor, The Bad Batch, Star Wars: Visions, Lando, Acolyte, A Droid Story, and Ahsoka all coming soon. The Obi-Wan Kenobi series begins production in March 2021, with Hayden Christensen returning as Darth Vader.

– Handmaiden’s Tale got renewed for a fifth season, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia was renewed for an additional four seasons, as well.

– A series based on the Alien movie franchise was announced for FX.

– She-Hulk, starring Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), is finally confirmed after months of speculation.

– Director Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) will direct the next Star Wars feature film, Rogue Squadron. Director Taika Waititi is working on his new untitled Star Wars film.

– Jaime Alexander’s Lady Sif will return to the big screen in Thor: Love and Thunder, while Rachel McAdams returns for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

– A new Fantastic Four film based in the MCU is officially happening, and the release date for Captain Marvel 2 is November 11, 2022.

Overall, Disney demonstrated they are investing heavily in their entertainment ecosystem and are signaling their intention to be the leader in the entertainment industry.
