Next Week in TV 2/14: The Pursuit of Fame and Fortunes!

By DRWHO42 & Scott C.

The past week on TV was a (good) wild ride. For instance, CBS left its mark on the week, which saw a lopsided Super Bowl LV win for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers over the Kansas City Chiefs…sorry Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. Anyway, The Equalizer and Clarice both made impressionable debuts; CBS is doing its best for that number one spot in the drama field this season versus the other main networks.

Looking at the week ahead, Eva Green returns to the small screen in a period series called The Luminaries. The series, which is based on the book of the same name, is about gold prospectors traveling to New Zealand in the 1860s, in pursuit of fortunes. Of course, expect challenges along the way. The series itself airs at 9:30 p.m. ET on STARZ tonight (Sunday).

Later in the week, we will see NBC add two new comedy series to the lineup, which will feature a few familiar faces. The first, Young Rock, focuses on the life of a young Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Following that is the series Kenan. It centers on a widowed father juggling family life, his job, and his personal life. Kenan will be Kenan Thompson’s first series starring as a lead character, which will also feature Don Johnson (Watchmen, Miami Vice) and Chris Redd (Saturday Night Live). Of course, after looking at the previews for both series, we highly recommend adding them to your viewing list this week. You can find the times and date of each premiere in the listing below.

As for space exploration, the Mars landing of the Perseverance Rover is this Thursday afternoon. As such, it will be a celebratory event for the science and astronomy community. The landing will be live-streamed on NASA TV, with coverage scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. ET, with the landing estimated to occur at 3:43 p.m. You can check out the events and information sessions by clicking here

Netflix’s post-apocalyptic Tribes of Europa looks very interesting this Friday morning, so we are adding this German import to our viewing list.

There was also a lot of exciting television news this week, along with a few sad ones, though. But we begin with some good news first. The world found out that Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, WW84) and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones, His Dark Materials) are joining the series adaptation of the popular video game series The Last of Us. Both news brought a lot of positive buzz on social media. We also found out that Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin will be the writer and executive producer, with Neil Druckmann, the writer and creative director for The Last of Us video game series.

If you did not know, we are currently in pilot season, which means that this is where we see studios and networks begin to make decisions on future projects. Friday night news broke about the long-awaited series adaption of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The series, which will stream on Amazon Prime, will star Donald Glover (Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag). We learned that an animated series based on the popular board game, Clue, is under development. Melissa Benoist (Supergirl) has launched her own production company and has signed a deal with Warner Bros.

Sadly, we learned that The CW has decided to pass on Wonder Girl, which had Queen of the South’s executive producer/co-showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez. If the series was going to happen, it would have been the first series to feature a Latinx hero. So, hopefully, this project is picked up somewhere else eventually (ahem…HBO Max or Netflix).

NBC announced Brooklyn Nine-Nine is ending after eight seasons, yet Search Party will be back for a 5th season.

Lastly, G4 has begun to lay the groundwork for the re-launch of the network, scheduled for the Summer of 2021. This week they announced their first slate of hosts, and there are a few familiar faces that will make many fans of the network jump for joy. Adam Sessler (X-Play) and Kevin Pereria (Attack of the Show!) are returning with Ovilee May and Indiana “Froskurinn” Black to cover the eSports. The network also announced Austin Creed (aka Xavier Woods) this past November, and we anticipate there will be more programming and host announcements in the weeks and months ahead. For more on the network and their beta programming called “B4G4”, click here

That’s all for this week. As always, please let us know what you will be watching when visiting the FoCC forum. You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
