Next Week in TV 2/28: Awards, Out-of-this-World Debris, The Walking Dead, and The Return of a King!

By DRWHO42 & Scott C.

The upcoming week in television is stacked to the brim with delightful options, including zombies, extraterrestrial phenomenon, heroes, and awards.

The week begins with the 78th Golden Globe Awards airing at 8 p.m. ET (Sunday) on NBC. The awards show will be hosted by the dynamic duo of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. We will be rooting for shows like The Mandalorian, Lovecraft Country, Ratched, The Crown, The Queen’s Gambit, Hamilton, Soul, and The Flight Attendant. For actors, we are cheering for Gillian Anderson (The Crown), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit & Emma), Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Olivia Coleman (The Crown), Kaley Cuoco (The Flight Attendant); Mark Ruffalo (I Know This Much is True), Hugh Grant (The Undoing), and Nicole Kidman (The Undoing). Lastly, top honors will go to Jane Fonda with the Cecil B. DeMille Award and Norman Lear awarded with the Carol Burnett Award.

Now, it has been a while since we have last seen the gang from The Walking Dead, but the long wait is over this Sunday evening (9 p.m. ET) over on AMC. The series, which got an extended episode order earlier last year for season ten, is back for six new episodes before concluding its 10th season. Fans of the series will be excited to see Lauren Cohan’s Maggie Rhee return; there will be some emotions coming to the surface as the character reconnects with everyone. There will, of course, be friction between her and Negan. We are also very curious about her new masked companion. Overall, there will be plenty to look forward to these next six weeks and beyond, with Fear The Walking Dead returning on April 11th, too.

Monday night will be a night many are looking forward to with the series premiere of Debris. This new series focuses on a mysterious event after an interstellar object crashes on Earth. It will spark a race to uncover the mystery and take control of the situation before any materials fall into the wrong hands. Do know that NBC has been friendly with the science fiction genre lately, and the timing of this premiere may be advantageous with viewers looking for new content while waiting for Manifest to return on April 1st. We are hopeful Debris has some staying power and the ratings to support a renewal (preferably an early one).

The scarlet speedster, The Flash, returns for its 7th season and is a nice pairing with Superman & Lois. Speaking of Superman, the series premiered with very high ratings and we are excited about that because it will show the executives at The CW they investment in the series is worthwhile and open the door to other series down the road.

Paramount+, formerly CBS All Access, debuts this week. During the recent launch presentation, there were several big announcements like the news that the platform will have movies such as Mission: Impossible 7 and Top Gun: Maverick available to viewers 45 days after their theatrical releases. Trek fans were also excited with the news of the on-going plans for the Star Trek TV franchise, like the new series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds currently in production. The brand-new series is before Star Trek: The Original Series, with Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Adams Mount), and the crew of the USS Enterprise, returning to the small screen after guest-starring in Star Trek: Discovery‘s second season.

We do have some sad news for fans of the new Twilight Zone, as the series is not returning for a third season. Now, this news may not be the end for the franchise given the number of reboots and re-investment of previously canceled shows.

Friday is the day to clear your plans, grab your popcorn, and get ready to laugh because Coming 2 America arrives on Amazon Prime. The cast for this long-awaited sequel to the 1988 film includes many of the original cast, such as Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Shari Headley, James Earl Jones, John Amos, Louis Anderson, Garcelle Beauvais, Paul Bates, and Kiki Layne. There are a few notables for this sequel, though, like Wesley Snipes and Leslie Jones. From what we have seen in the trailers, the ‘makeup magic’ will be back to help Eddie Murphy, and Arsenio Hall transform into other hilarious characters. We are hopeful that the ‘magic’ will be back along with the laughs.

Netflix, meanwhile, is picking up the mantle in the fight against Kaijus with the animated Pacific Rim: The Black premiering on Friday. The series will take place after the events of the two theatrical films (which we are still hopeful that a third film will happen) and it centers on two siblings who are looking for their parents while coming across an abandoned Jaeger.

In television and media news, Netflix released an impressive trailer for the upcoming fantasy series Shadow and Bone ahead of the panel for IGNFest. The series, which is scheduled to be released on April 23rd, is based on Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse novels. It tells the tale of a young girl developing extraordinary powers, that could help her war-town. We have added this series to our list for April and will recommend that you consider adding it to your watch list.

Fans of The Handmaids Tale received a gift this week with the announcement of the season four release date – April 28th – along with a trailer for the upcoming season. The series, which films around Toronto, had to make many adjustments while shooting the fourth season because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The show’s producers did hint, though, at a slightly different look and feel for this highly anticipated upcoming fourth season, as June (Elizabeth Moss) is on a mission to retrieve her daughter, Hannah, and disrupt Gilead. We expect this season will be a game-changer and we are especially happy that the series has already been renewed for a 5th season.

Lastly, WandaVision wraps up its first season this Friday on Disney+. The series has been an immediate favorite with Marvel fans everywhere, so we are hopeful that there will be a second season later, or an expansion of the story being told.

That is it for this week! Until next time, please let us know what you will be watching when visiting the FoCC forum. You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
