Next Week in TV 6/20: Delving into the Supernatural with Evil and Farewell Conan

By DRWHO42 & Scott C.

The week ahead is filled with great viewing options for viewers who like comedy, drama, or sports that provides us a way to escape the unpleasant summer heat.

First up is the return of Evil for its second season on Paramount+. Evil was a hidden gem within the 2019-2020 CBS lineup with stars Katja Herbers (Westworld), Mike Colter (Luke Cage), and Assif Mandvi (Blue Bloods) as a team of investigators who look into miracles, possessions, and the occult. Michael Emerson (Person of Interest, Lost) also stars in this series as a mysterious manipulator who we think may be working for ‘The Devil’, or some unseen dark force. Now, if you have not had the opportunity to watch the series, we strongly recommend adding it to your watch list (as the first season is currently on Netflix). There is much more than meets the eye in each episode, and the series writers do a great job teasing viewers with just enough supernatural elements to keep you guessing on what may happen next, just like what The X-Files did long ago.

While on the subject of Paramount+, the second season trailer for Picard saw a release last week, we got a first glimpse at what is in store for Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), plus the addition to seeing the highly anticipated return of Q. The poster for the series hints that there may be a trip in time to present-day Los Angeles, but we will have to wait until 2022 to find out if that will be the case. We doubt a pair of whales need saving again, though.

AMC kicks off its summer programming with the dark comedy Kevin Can F**k Himself, which stars Annie Murphy (Schitt’s Creek). This series takes a different approach which switches between multiple camera sitcom viewpoints for some scenes (with a laugh track) and a traditional single-camera setting. Reviews from television critics have been positive, so we recommend adding the show to your watch list.

Are you a Kaiju fan? If so, mark this Thursday (June 24th) into your calendars for the premiere of Godzilla Singular Point on Netflix. Viewers and Godzilla fans alike should appreciate the eye-popping anime style adopted for this series. Overall, you can never go wrong with watching Godzilla content. Who does not like watching a giant lizard destroying cities or fighting other monsters? The blog likes it!

As for Clarice, the series wraps up its first season this Thursday; however, we are still waiting for word on a renewal. As of this writing, the series was not picked up by the CBS network, and negotiations with Paramount+ have stalled. So far, this series has been a standout with Rebecca Breeds’ brilliant portrayal of Clarice Starling, the show’s multi-dimensional characters, and perfectly woven mystery that we cannot get enough in watching. We are hopeful we will see a renewal announcement soon.

Conan O’Brien will take a final bow late Thursday evening on TBS. San Diego Comic-Con fans will be a little heartbroken since his show, a must-go-to off-site due to having a great guest lists, Conan and his crew providing fans with good shows, and giving out free special edition Conan-themed Funko Pops!, will probably not be returning next year. We do remain hopeful that the variety show Conan is developing with HBO Max will allow for an excursion to Comic-Con in some way that makes it one of the best off-sites to try in July.

The competition for spots on the U.S. Olympic team continues this week, with trials for Track, Gymnastics, and Swimming occurring throughout the week. While the focus of the U.S. broadcasts is on the team representing the country, we recommend checking the streaming platforms, such as Amazon Prime, for trials that may be available from other countries for their respective teams.

In television news, fans of The Blacklist were shocked to find out that Megan Boone is stepping away from the series as a regular after eight seasons. While Boone has not spoken publicly about her departure, multiple news reports state that she is working on other projects and wants to do just that for now. Regardless, we hope there is a chance we see Boone again in the upcoming ninth season. For now, we have the season finale this Wednesday night to look forward to this week, and it may be one of the last times we see our beloved Elizabeth Keen.

Manifest has been getting a lot of buzz lately thanks to the recent cliffhanger season finale and the unfortunate news of the NBC network cancellation of the series. Thus, fans kicked off a #SaveManifest Twitter campaign afterward and Tweet-a-longs with series creator Jeff Rake, plus stars Josh Dallas, Mellissa Roxburgh, J.R. Martinez, Daryl Edwards, Luna Blaise, and Parveen Kaur joining in. Fans are hopeful Netflix will pick up the series, and there is a good case to justify the pick-up with the series itself being in the #1 spot on Netflix since its premiere on the streaming platform last week.

That is all for this week. Do not forget to look at the new listing below to know the times, dates, and where to watch shows (or movies) that were mentioned earlier or not. Also, we wish all the good fathers and fatherly figures a Happy Father’s Day.
