Next Week in TV 7/4: Black Widow Arrives!

By DRWHO42 & Scott C.

This week the United States celebrates its 245th birthday. The nation will be celebrating Independence Day with fireworks, BBQs, time with families, and relaxation.

This week in television will be a good catch-up week on your DVR stack to discover new and exciting series or take in a movie or more. While we are on the topic of films, Fear Street (Netflix) is premiering this week if you are a fan of the horror genre. The second installment of the trilogy of movies will be released this Friday (July 9th).

The highlight of the week is, of course, Black Widow. The long-awaited solo film for Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) kicks off the latest phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film will be released simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ on July 9th (at an additional fee of $30). The trailers so far looked great for this film that showed that we should expect plenty of action and, hopefully, learn a little more about the backstory of Natasha. The cast also includes Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Rachael Weisz.

The German bio-chemistry series, Biohackers, returns for its second season this Friday on Netflix. This suspenseful series, which focuses on a young woman investigating a mysterious event surrounding her birth, picks up a few months after the events of the first season finale.

Leverage is getting the “re-boot” treatment in a way this week (July 9th) as it launches on IMDB TV. There will be familiar faces such as Gina Bellman and new faces including Noah Wiley. The series is about “A new generation of New York private school teens being introduced to social surveillance nine years after the original blogger’s website went dark.”

As for everything else not mentioned, the listing below is going to be your guide to know what else is airing soon.

In television news, Netflix decided to release the trailer for the highly anticipated Masters of the Universe: Revelation. We were impressed, not only by the trailer (which is viewable by clicking here) but also with the cast assembled for the series. It has Mark Hamill (Skeletor), Lena Headey (Evil-Lyn), Chris Wood (Prince Adam / He-Man), Sarah Michelle Gellar (Teela), Liam Cunningham (Man-At-Arms), Henry Rollins (Tri-Klops), Alan Oppenheimer [original Skeletor] (Moss Man), Alicia Silverstone (Queen Marlena); Justin Long (Roboto), Jason Mewes (Stinkor), Tony Todd (Scare Glow), and Kevin Conroy (Mer-Man). Of course, we will be marking our calendars and clearing up our plans once Netflix announces the release date for the upcoming series.

Amazon Prime announced this week that the highly anticipated series, The Wheel of Time, will premiere in 2021. Nico Parker (Dumbo) was announced this week as an addition to the cast of HBO’s The Last of Us.

The folks at WB and The CW have been busy lately. For instance, this week marked the completion of filming for the first season of Superman & Lois. We think that this series has been a standout since the premiere, thanks to the perfect blend of character building, awesome crime-fighting fun, along with a few surprises we have enjoyed thus far. There is also good news for Sofia Hasmik, who plays Chrissy Beppo, as she will be upped to a series regular for season two. Team Flash, meanwhile, is staying strong into season eight with Candice Patton, Jesse L. Martin, and Danielle Panabaker signing new deals. No word yet if season eight will be it for The Flash series.

Lastly, the cancellation button has been working in overdrive these recent weeks, with Lovecraft County now being the latest victim. As such, fans were saddened by the news that this critically acclaimed series wasn’t getting a second season.

That is it for now. We hope everyone has a happy and safe 4th of July. Please let us know what you will be watching when visiting the FoCC forum. You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
