Next Week in TV 7/18: Masters of the Universe: Revelation and The Pursuit of Olympic Glory!

By DRWHO42 & Scott C.

The week many of us have been waiting for is finally here.

The Tokyo Olympic Games kick off this week after a year-long delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There will be a lot of excitement for the traditional events such as gymnastics, swimming, water polo, diving, beach volleyball, fencing, soccer, and track and field. There are also a few new and exciting events to keep your eye on, including surfing, skateboarding, BMX, sport climbing. To watch, NBC will be airing the games on their channels and their Peacock streaming platform. You can check out their website for the United States (U.S.)-based coverage and schedule, and to see other countries duke it out, simply by clicking here. The listing below will also have a few Olympic U.S. games listed for your convenience. Of course, we wish all of the athletes a great Olympic experience.

Keeping with the sports theme, the Concacaf Gold Cup match between the U.S. and Canada takes place late Sunday afternoon (5 p.m. ET) on Fox. The U.S. men’s national team looks to wrap up group play by beating Canada. Staying with the sports theme, the popular Jason Sudeikis soccer … ahem … football series, Ted Lasso, returns for its second season on Apple TV+ this Friday, July 23rd.

The next chapter in the Trollhunters saga continues this week. A new animated movie on Netflix titled Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans releases this week (Wednesday, July 21st). The gang is back, and this movie sets to complete the Trollhunters storyline established for the series long ago.

Besides the Olympics, the other highlight of the week for the blog is the series debut of The Masters of the Universe: Revelation. Debuting on Netflix this Friday, July 23rd, the Kevin Smith reboot of the beloved 80s cartoon series includes voice actors Mark Hamill (Skeletor), Lena Headey (Evil-Lyn), Chris Wood (Prince Adam / He-Man), Sarah Michelle Gellar (Teela), Liam Cunningham (Man-At-Arms), Henry Rollins (Tri-Klops), Alan Oppenheimer [original Skeletor] (Moss Man), Alicia Silverstone (Queen Marlena); Justin Long (Roboto), Jason Mewes (Stinkor), Tony Todd (Scare Glow), and Kevin Conroy (Mer-Man). You can view the trailer for the series by clicking here.

Several finales are airing this week, including the seventh season finale of The Flash, the first season finale of Kung Fu, Charmed, and All AmericanKung Fu was a stand-out series this year that sets up an overarching treasure hunt story while keeping the acting grounded with family and character-driven subplots. If you have not had the opportunity to check out the series, add it to your on-demand watch list. Sadly, NBC’s Good Girls will end its run this week (Thursday, July 22nd).

San Diego [email protected] kicks off later this week (July 23rd), and AMC+ will feature tons of panels for their upcoming series on their platform starting this Friday.

In television news, Marvel made it official last week by announcing that Loki is getting a second season. To preserve the Sacred Timeline we like to call spoilers, we will not say much here, yet we will save it for the upcoming first season recap and review by the blog’s very own Mario Wario.

Manifest fans have not given up quite yet. They have been very vocal since the news broke about the series cancellation. Thus, fans have been recruiting new blood to experience the series over on Netflix. The series has been raking in the first and second most-watched positions for weeks now, so we hope the network executives at NBC or Netflix decide to give the series one more (or two) tries to complete the story of the passengers of Flight 828. Keep crossing those fingers, everyone.

NBC has announced the fall season premiere dates for several series, with the Chicago-based series kicking off Wednesday, September 22nd, followed by Law & Order: SVU and Organized Crime kicking off their seasons on Thursday, September 23rd. The Blacklist moves to Thursdays when the series premieres on October 21st. We will have our eyes set on September 28th for the premiere of La Brea, which is the network’s latest venture in the sci-fi realm that is about a group of people falling through a sinkhole to find themselves in a primeval world under the Earth’s surface.

CBS was also busy building up their fall schedule by locking up each Tuesday night. FBI, FBI: Most Wanted, and the new FBI: International will premiere on September 21st with a three-series crossover event. S.W.A.T., Magnum P.I., and BlueBloods will kick off their seasons on October 1st, with CSI: Las Vegas making a return on October 6th. Young Sheldon returns on October 7th and will also begin airing repeats of past seasons in syndication. Lastly, The Equalizer will return for its second season on October 10th along with NCIS: Los Angeles and SEAL Team.

Lastly, the nominations for the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards got announced last week. The fandom community for the nominated shows had a lot to celebrate with nominations for The Boys, Lovecraft Country, The Mandalorian, Cobra Kai, Wandavision, Bridgerton, The Queen’s Gambit, The Falcon, and the Winter Soldier, and The Handmaid’s Tale. We will have to wait until September 19th to know who will get those wins. But based on these nominations, there could be a solid case to network and streaming executives that this type of programming can yield positive results for their platforms or networks. As such, it does open the door to additional content for this genre in the coming years. This type of programming could also lead a marketing drive and programming at future WonderCons and San Diego Comic-Cons.

That is all for now and it is time for us to great ready for two weeks of Olympic action. Of course, please let us know what you will be watching when visiting the FoCC forum. You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
