Ladies, gentlemen, and fellow Whovians, we officially know the identity of the actor who will assume the role of our long-living traveling Time Lord. BBC announced today, and ahead of the British Academy Television Awards (BAFTA), that Ncuti Gatwa will follow Jodie Whittaker’s 13th incarnation and be the 14th Doctor. Gatwa may be familiar to many through his role as Eric Effiong in the coming-of-age series Sex Education (Netflix) and recently joined the cast of the upcoming Barbie, alongside Margot Robbie and Emma Mackey (Sex Education).
Speculation on who will assume the role has been a hot topic for fans since news of Whittaker’s departure from the series several months ago. The rumor mill went into overdrive as a wide range of actors and actresses were anointed as the next Doctor by a few in the media, the radars of Whovians everywhere were on as such. But to make the speculation more interesting, there were also rumors of David Tennant returning to the series for another season (or more) as The Doctor.
I had hoped Jo Martin would be announced as the lead for the series, or rather given the opportunity to play again as the Fugitive Doctor on TV instead of the random “drop in appearances.”
The BBC has done a great job keeping the casting news under wraps, and the selection of Gatwa was a little bit of a surprise which I first thought was a false report until the official announcement made it real. Gatwa stated in a press interview shortly after that the decision was made in February, and he was relieved because he can now speak about the role and how excited he is about it.
While we may not yet know what the approach will be for Gatwa’s portrayal of The Doctor’s persona for this 14th incarnation, I feel that his range and energy as a actor will shine brightly like his predecessors, which includes Tennant and Smith. I recommend watching Sex Education to understand why I like Gatwa as an actor.
Change is, at times, inevitable, and the infusion of regeneration into the series breathes a fresh sense of life into the series every few years. While I am still a little sad about Whittaker’s departure, I am excited for the future of the series and I look forward to seeing Gatwa as The Doctor!
