San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2022 took place at the San Diego Convention Center on July 20-24, allowing fans like myself to celebrate all things associated with pop culture. This year also marked the in-person return of SDCC, since the last one was 2019, due to the COVID-19 Pandemic shutting down major events in 2020 and somewhat in 2021. Yet SDCC wasn’t the only event returning in-person: The Her Universe Fashion Show returned to action after its cancellation in 2020 (thanks to COVID-19), and going virtual last year.
With this year’s event being my second Her Universe Fashion Show, my first was 2019, I was eager to find out how 2022’s show was going to go by Ashley Eckstein (the voice of Ahsoka Tano from Star Wars and founder of Her Universe in 2010) and Her Universe. So, how was it?
Located inside the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel’s Harbor Ballroom, on the evening of July 21st, presented by Her Universe and Hot Topic, with sponsors Lug and Glam Goth, 2,000 fans were welcomed with a opening theme called “Coming Home,” since it has been a long time that the Her Universe community was able to come together in-person. Of course, to also support geek couture through the power of fashion. (By the way, this event is always free to the public via a wristband.)
The co-hosts this year were Eckstein and drag icon Nina West, and I must say, the chemistry between the two was great! For instance, fans got many enjoyable funny moments from the two, such as a Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion bit (pictured below). So, I hope we get this duo again next year.
Like in 2019, there were 26 designers vying to win 2 spots (winners listed below), and the “Coming Home” theme used Wizard of Oz, which saw Ashley in a “Deconstructed couture Dorothy look designed by 2014 Her Universe Fashion Show Winner Andrew MacLaine.” Nina was Glinda and was in a “Custom bubbly pink gown by Johnny Wujek and John Thomas.” (Both fabulous looks are pictured in the slideshow below.)
The event also had a ”Special dedication for former contestant Miranda Starr Tuttle, who passed away exactly three years prior, lighting a star lantern above the runway to shine the way for all of the 2022 designers.” I found this moment very touching, which shows how great the Her Universe community is: that you are forever loved and remembered within this family.
Of course, this presentation was about the 26 designers and their designs; and goodness, job well done by everyone competing! I loved what I saw, which made it really hard to pick a designer once voting began for the audience. Speaking of which, here were the two winners:
Judges winner: Cindy Guillermo Heselton for the Caged look inspired by Turning Red’s Mei.
Audience winner: Michael Burson for the Doctor Strange Hellfire Gala look inspired by Doctor Strange. (Each person had to vote for one designer only via a paper ballot.)
2022’s judges were 2021-winning designers Teighlor Johnson, Skyler Barrett, and Vivien Lee. Also, fashion industry professionals Elena Vrska and Mallory Leveille. But it was awesome seeing the 2021 virtual winners finally walk the runway before the main event began. The 2022 winners, meanwhile, will be busy designing a fashion collection with Her Universe for Hot Topic, for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s The Marvels movie. To further support the Marvel brand, the co-hosts donned Captain Marvel-themed evening wear to end the night (as seen in the featured image).
The official voice of Mickey Mouse, Bret Iwan, was also in attendance, which meant fans got a taste of hearing the Mouse. As expected, the audience loved it and so did I as a Disney fan. Also, everyone got small gift bags provided by Lug as a thank you for coming, and got to see new items from Her Universe. So, if you want to see footage of the fashion show itself, you can do so by clicking here.
Overall, this year’s Her Universe Fashion Show was superb. This event (again) gave fans an easy way to experience a lovely fashion show, with all of the designers showcasing their best designs through fashion. As you can tell, I highly recommend seeing this show (or keep seeing it) when you are at SDCC, especially if you love being a geek as well as fashion. As for 2022’s show, here are several more photos from the night below, so enjoy!
