Next Week in TV 8/28: A Spectacular Return to Middle-Earth Awaits

Television is entering an exciting phase if you are a fan of fantasy-based franchises. Last week’s premiere of The House of the Dragon reinvigorated our interest in the Game of Thrones saga; re-established our faith in HBO’s ability to build upon the magical dominance the original series once had. Thus, viewers cast a solid vote of confidence, with over 20 million viewers tuning into the premiere and streaming viewers crashing HBO Max. In response, it was announced by HBO on Friday that the series is getting a second season.
Looking ahead to this week, Amazon has an epic adventure in store for you Thursday with the highly anticipated series premiere of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Set in a distant time before the story of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Trailers for the series were quite compelling, with beautiful imagery while giving us a glimpse at some of the characters featured thus far. The SDCC panel for the series also generated a lot of buzzes (click here for a recap of the panel). Amazon will release two episodes of the eight-episode first season, then move to a weekly release model. Amazon has already confirmed a second season of the series, and there are reports of a five-season commitment with the Tolkien estate, so there is plenty of fun ahead for fans!
Also, this week is the third season premiere of Star Girl and the fourth season finale of Wellington Paranormal Wednesday on The CW.
Lastly, a few summer hits pop up on streaming platforms for the Labor Day holiday weekend. Thor: Thunder and Love and Top Gun: Maverick are recent additions over the past couple of weeks on Disney+ and Paramount+, respectively. And this week, Jurassic World: Domination joins the lineup on Peacock.
