Next Week in TV 10/23: Whittaker’s Finale as The Doctor and Guillermo del Toro’s Fright-filled Cabinet of Curiosities

By DRWHO42 & Scott C.

If there were one word to describe the week ahead on television, it would be bittersweet. There will be a mixture of excitement and sadness as we mark the departure of Jodie Whittaker in the titular role of The Doctor in Doctor Who and the upcoming first season finale of the anti-Brady Bunch series, House of Dragons

Sunday will certainly be the day to clear your plans so you can watch Doctor Who and House of Dragons live (or close to it) while avoiding spoilers from friends, social media, and news outlets that are jockeying to post their reactions. First up is the last appearance of Jodie Whitakers’ 13th Doctor (for now, I’m sure) in the episode titled The Power of The Doctor. Aside from Mandip Gil (Yaz) and John Bishop (Dan). There are a few familiar faces from the Whovian past joining The Doctor in her “last” battle, with Sophie Aldred (Ace from the 7th Doctor’s era) and Jane Fielding (Tegan from the 5th Doctor’s era) joining in the battle with Daleks, Cybermen, and The Master (Sacha Dhawan). This episode, which is part of the 100-year milestone celebration of The BBC, will be 90 minutes long. Since this episode will conclude with a regeneration, we will be curious to see how it may play out with Ncuti Gatwa set to take the TARDIS keys as the 14th Doctor.

House of Dragon has been on a slow-paced, time-jumping, actor-changing journey over its first season. Viewers have been brought a long way throughout the season and got to see a lot of families “baggage”, all in the quest for the Iron Throne with affairs, schemes, strategic marriages, and a sprinkle of character redemption (courtesy of Daemon’s defense of his step-children). We have a suspicion that the season finale will be more of a setup for season two, rather than providing any sort of conclusion to several events we have seen this far. Although, it will still be fun to see how things play out.

Halloween is around the corner, and Netflix is kicking it into overdrive this week with the visionary magic of Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. The series, premiering on Tuesday, October 25th, will be comprised of eight suspenseful and terror-filled stories released over four nights. The cast for this series is stellar, with Rupert Grint (Harry Potter), Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead), Geena Davis (Beetlejuice), F. Murray Abrham (Moon KnightAmadeus), DJ Qualls (Road TripSupernatural), Ben Barnes (Shadow & Bone), Ismael Cruz Cordova (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power), Crispin Glover (Back to the FutureCharlie’s Angels), Peter Weller (Robocop), and Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding). The fantastic trailer gives us a Twilight Zone feel, and we are clearing our plans to watch it each night this week.

If you are a Doctor Who fan, you will not be mistaken if you say that this week is teeming with former Doctors. Peter Capaldi returns to our screens in The Devil’s Hour, premiering Friday on Prime. The series stars Jessica Raine (Call the Midwife) as a woman who mysteriously wakes up each night at 3:33 AM and gets involved in a murder investigation. But this is no ordinary insomnia-induced murder mystery, and it becomes apparent that there is something else going on, which is potentially supernatural or time-bending and the central suspect, Gideon (Capadi), seems to be the source of the clues which will lead to the answer.

For those looking for a suspenseful true-life story of the serial killer Charles Cullen, add The Good Nurse to your list. The Netflix movie stars Academy Award winners Jessica Chastain (Amy) and Eddie Redmayne (Charles Cullen aka Charlie). It tells the story of a New Jersey nurse, Amy (Chastain), who learns that her colleague and good friend, Charlie (Redmayne), is killing patients.

Lastly, the Star Trek animated adventures will have a proverbial change of guard with the season finale of Star Trek: Lower Decks and the season premiere of Star Trek: Prodigy
