Next Week in TV 5/7: Finales, More Finales, and The Writers’ Strike

May is here! But this time of the year usually marks the wave of the season and series finales.
This week fans will bid the gritty hero series, Titans, goodbye as it wraps up its fourth and final season. Other notable season finales include Call the Midwife, Fantasy Island, Night Court, Ghosts, Family Guy, and Walker.
Fans of procedural series will find Class of ’09 and City on Fire worth adding to the list. The FBI-set Class of ’09, starring Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta, Bullet Train) and Kate Mara (The Martian), is the standout recommendation due to its approach to storytelling, which follows the characters over three distinct periods and how their lives change since they graduate from training.
AMC+ subscribers will have early access to the eighth and final season of the premiere of Fear the Walking Dead. AMC+ also has a special from WonderCon to supplement the season premiere.
The entertainment industry, however, has come to a crossroads with the Writers’ Strike, and many productions are either halting or making strategic decisions to forge ahead (with no writers). All late-night shows, though, as well as Saturday Night Live have paused production, as well as several series, including Evil, Stranger Things, and more. Series such as Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and The House of the Dragon are proceeding with production based on the latest reports. The MTV Movie Awards will shift from its previously planned live ceremony and will instead proceed with a pre-taped format.
In television news, there were quite a few notable cancellations this week, like SWAT, Call Me Kat, and 9-1-1. For fans of 9-1-1, the cancellation news was a shocker, since the series was highly rated and popular on Fox. Thankfully, there was instant relief because the series was picked up by ABC.
Paramount+ confirmed what fans of Yellowstone long suspected that series will end after its fifth season; however, there are plans for a sequel series. Netflix’s Sweet Tooth has been renewed for a third and final season.
In casting news, there was plenty of excitement for Whovians over the past few months with production in full swing, and the latest announcement from the BBC has (certainly) generated a lot of excitement. Jonathan Groff (Knock at the Cabin, Glee, Hamilton) will join a future episode of Doctor Who as a guest in what is dubbed a “mysterious” role. Amazon announced Jonathon Robert Patrick, fresh off his role in The Night Agent, is joining Reacher season two as a replacement for Rory Cochrane, who had to bow out due to a scheduling conflict.
On a final note, we at the blog understand the objectives of the Writers’ Strike and have friends and acquaintances who are on strike. We are hopeful an amicable solution is found very soon.
