Next Week in TV 8/6: A Wonder Spy Fights Hackers And The Strange New Worlds Season Finale Tops The Week

The typical quiet time for television in August is upon us, with our main focus on summer vacations and BBQ gatherings. Thus, the TV lineup for the week ahead in television is relatively light with a few new additions; however, there are a couple of gems to be on the lookout for, and this can be the week to dive into a streamer library to find something new and interesting, that may have slipped past your radar such as Twisted Metal or Warrior Nun.
Looking back at the past week, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds pulled off a first in the franchise’s history, a musical episode. Some fans may have been skeptical and apprehensive about such a concept, but after viewing “Subspace Rhapsody”, we felt the story with the Rodgers & Hammerstein and Dubstep musical numbers worked. But there was a little payoff at the end that should remind long-time Trek fans of the Original Series. Of course, if you have not watched it, we recommend giving it a watch.
Looking ahead to this week, the interesting and engaging Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez, Only Murders In The Building, returns for its third season this Tuesday on Hulu. There will be a few familiar faces to guest star this season, and we are looking forward to that because of that.
On Wednesday, Hulu brings a new superpower-themed series from Korea to our shores for enjoyment. Adapted from a webtoon, Moving centers on a group of teenagers with superpowers, and their parents struggle to keep a low profile while contending with familial issues.
There are a few season finales this week that fans are both looking forward to or would prefer their series not end their seasons so quickly. The second season finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is one series that fans cannot get enough of, and the series will cap off its epic second season of voyages with an encounter with … The Gorn. The other season finale is the inspiring basketball series, Swagger. Outlander will stage its midseason finale this week, to the disappointment of fans, as they will have to wait until sometime in 2024 for the remaining episodes to air.
Lastly, Netflix continues to deliver on star power with its latest, Heart of Stone, starring Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan. The action movie, debuting Friday, centers on an accomplished intelligence operative who must stop a hacker from stealing a weapon, called The Heart. This film can be compared to a female Bond meets Mission Impossible mashup, so we are getting our popcorn ready for a fun action movie to cap off our week.
Entertainment news is sparse with the strikes; however, there was a pleasant surprise from Gal Gadot this week when she confirmed that discussions are taking place for a third Wonder Woman film. This news was met with mixed emotions, with fans vested in and hoping for a return of Henry Cavill’s Superman and Ben Affleck’s Batman.
