Next Week in TV 1/21: Taking Flight With Masters of the Air and Beyond

By DRWHO42 and Scott C.

Jack Frost is certainly making his presence felt throughout the US, and this is the time we say to stay inside and watch some (warm) televised delights from the comfort of your couch.

The week ahead will feature some heroism in the air and across our universe, plus a few new shows involving the criminal underworld theme. The spotlight of the week, however, for us is the Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg-produced Masters of the Air. The two with successes with Band of Brothers and The Pacific have teamed up again for a historical trip to the air above Europe during World War II. This mini-series, starring Austin Butler (Elvis, Dune II) centers on a group of men flying a B-17 Flying Fortress over World War II Germany; the missions were not safe, and the series will show how these heroes worked together and dealt with the challenges they faced both in the air and on the ground.

Kevin Smith’s version of He-man is returning to Netflix in a new adventure titled Masters of the Universe: Revolution. Chris Wood returns to voice He-man alongside Melissa Benoist, Mark Hamill, and William Shatner.

The NFL playoffs are well underway, and this week’s matchup will set up who will head to the Super Bowl in Las Vegas. Off the field, we will head to Amazon Prime for The Underdoggs, starring Snoop Dogg and Mike Epps. The movie centers on a former professional football player sentenced to coach a children’s football team. Based on what we saw in a recent trailer, this movie is bound to deliver some laughs as Snoop’s character works to transform a dysfunctional team into a winning one.

If you are looking for a trip into the criminal underworld, the week ahead has it with the premieres of Griselda, starring Sofia Vergara (Modern Family), in the story of Griselda Blanco’s climb to the top of the Miami drug empire. Paramount+ will transport you across the pond for Sexy Beast, starring Stephen Moyer (True Blood) as a crime boss who recruits two thieves for a bank heist.

Last week on television, Reacher concluded its second season with a happy ending for the heroes and victims while revenge was exacted in the most fitting of ways. The villains certainly learned not to mess with The Special Instigators. We are happy to report that filming for the third season is underway, with Alan Ritchson providing a few pictures on his Instagram account. We are unsure which book will be used for the third season and who may be dropping in, but we are excited to see the third season when it is released on Prime at a date not yet announced.

In entertainment news, the announcement of nominees for the Academy will be held this week, with Jack Quaid and Zazie Beetz selected to conduct the honors. The Marvel television universe is reshaping with word from Tatiana Maslany that She-Hulk may not be returning for a second season as some may have hoped. There is good news for fans of Daredevil with the confirmation Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll will reprise their roles for Daredevil: Born Again

Lastly, Variety reported that there will be a change coming to the TARDIS crew with Varada Sethu (Strike Back, Andor) joining Ncuti Gatwa and replacing Millie Brown as The Doctor’s traveling companion in the upcoming 15th season, which is currently filming. Tenures for companions in Doctor Who can be short, so this does not come as too much of a surprise. But it also creates some excitement with the new potential backstories to delve into, and the opportunity to see the new pairing develop their bond through their adventures in Time and Space.

Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all. Click here for more information.
