Gatchaman Comic Book Series to Debut

by Transmute Jun

The classic Japanese anime Gatchaman (released by Tatsunoko Productions) had a massive impact on both animation and the concept of the super sentai/superhero team when it debuted in 1972. The series was translated for American audiences as Battle of the Planets (1970s), G-Force (1980s) and Eagle Riders (1990s). The originating anime is still beloved around the world, with viewers both old and new. The story of Gatchaman revolves around the titualar bird-themed superhero team of five teenagers who fight against Galactor, a terrorist organization that schemes to steal the world’s energy resources and take over the planet. The Gatchaman team are trained as science ninjas: literally using advanced science/technical knowledge and ninja-like fighting skills to defeat their enemy.

Gatchaman fans were excited to hear about the upcoming comic book series to be released by Mad Cave Studios. The first books will be officially released in June, but a preview comic can be picked up by fans on Free Comic Book Day (May 4) at their local comic book store.

This new series will expand upon the story of the original anime, rather than repeating the same plots. In the first issue, a mechanical terror descends upon numerous cities and the world’s greatest scientists are disappearing. The Science Ninja Team Gatchaman must battle these machinations from the international terrorist organization known as Galactor. The team’s strength, willpower, and even vehicles are pushed to the absolute limit.

Future miniseries are scheduled focusing around Ken, the leader of the Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, and third officer Jun, as well as another focusing on Galactor itself.

Mad Cave Studios has been successful in the past with modern adaptations of Dick Tracy and Battlecats, among others. Fans are hoping to see a big presence from Mad Cave at San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) in July.
