Four reasons why my home is the WORST place to buy a badge.
« on: March 19, 2014, 09:43:48 AM »
1.) Day before prereg on February 7, my Internet connection went down.

2.) My hard drive died on March 9.

3.) and 4.) The week of March 5 and again on March 16, we had a power outage that lasted an hour both times, although both incidents occurred in the evening.

Open badge registration was on March 15.

I'll never rely on my home computer for badge registration again.  From now on, I use an Internet gamers' cafe.

I am glad that despite all of this, you got a badge this year, Andrew. But that is a horrible string of bad luck!

Hopefully next year it will be better. And I agree, it's good to have a backup!

Wow, you were doomed from just about every angle. I hope you were able to recover the hard drive. That's a terrible feeling :(

It's great you did get a badge still. Divine nerdom smiled upon you :D

Number one could have been avoided if I did not switch from AT&T U-verse to Time Warner just one week earlier.

I lost all my E-mails going back four years and all my iCal calendar appointments going back seven years.  In addition, I lost all my bookmarks on my Firefox web browser.  I also lost Apple's iLife, which included iPhoto, iDVD and iMovie.  I was able to recover Adobe Photoshop (which includes Bridge), Microsoft Office for Mac '11 and my movie editing software Avid Media Composer.  I still have hard copies of Final Cut Pro which I haven't reinstalled yet.  So far it cost me a little over $100 for a new portable hard drive.  I was also able to recover a few important things from my dying hard drive before it breathed it's last breath.

I did save two copies of my bar code E-mail on two web-based E-mail servers and I printed two copies out as soon as I received it though.

Sam Turtledove was able to get to the front of the line before I did during prereg to buy me a four-day badge w/preview night.  I was at an Internet gamers' cafe and was successful to purchase for mdla and his party of three four-day badges w/out preview night (preview night was already gone when it was my turn).

Cool. Are there any 24 hour cafes in LA?

The only one I know is Internet Gamerz, they are located in Fullerton in Orange County.  They also used to be in Anaheim and Huntington Beach, but both of them have since closed down.

mdla recommended Internet Gamerz to me over Kinko's.  They have faster and reliable Internet connection.
