Wow! I guess I'd better pre-register right now. This process is crazy but I'm willing to go through it again for SDCC 2018.

Was there any indication given at the Talkback panel as to why Returning Registration - and General Registration for that matter - took place so late in the convention calendar? Is a February/March badge sale the now agreed process for CCI to undertake?

Yes. They said that they had wanted to institute a new system, but it wasn't working and they had to eventually go back to the old system.

so this year's SDCC was the last year my son is free since he is 13. So i was wondering, can he participate in pre-reg or do i have to wait till open registration to get him a badge? the back of the child badge has no information about this.

When they make an announcement about returning registration happening 'soon', they will also announce that if your child attended on a free cild badge last year but needs a junior badge this year, then you should contact them. They will set your child up to be eligible for returning registration. If your child is already 13, make a member !D account for them now as it will save time later on. If they are not yet 13, you canmake a member ID account on the first day of the month AFTER they turn 13. So for example, if your child's birthday is in July, you can make a member ID account for them as of August 1.

Comic-Con 2018 Returning Registration is open to all Comic-Con 2017 paid attendees. First-time attendees, professionals, guest of professionals, trade professionals, exhibitors (and exhibitor-purchased attendee badges), volunteers, staff, complimentary passes, and press are not eligible to participate in Returning Registration.

Returning Registration for Comic-Con 2018

You will not need to validate your Comic-Con 2017 badge number to participate. You may purchase badges for up to three people-yourself included-during Returning Registration. Each person must have their own valid and confirmed Comic-Con Member ID, and must be eligible to participate in Returning Registration. You may not purchase badges for others using your own Member ID.

If you did not purchase an attendee badge for Comic-Con 2017, you may participate in Open Registration

To participate in Open Registration, you must have a valid and confirmed Comic-Con Member ID. The Member ID system will close-without notice-in advance of Open Registration. Make sure you and anyone you wish to purchase a badge for has their own confirmed Member ID well ahead of Open Registration, or you may be left at the edge of the galaxy with Emperor Zurg! Not all badges are sold during Returning Registration-there will be badges available during Open Registration.

Children who attended Comic-Con 2017 with a paid adult attendee that were age 13 or older by September 30, 2017 are eligible to participate in Comic-Con 2018 Returning Registration! To register for eligibility, click here and complete the child-to junior process by September 20, 2017. You will need the physical Comic-Con 2017 child badge to complete the validation process. But you can forget about The Claw, Pizza Planet, and the mystic portal!

Whew..on one hand I was annoyed at the lateness of the sale last year (mostly because of flights) but on the other I was sort of hoping, this year in particular because of work stuff, that it would be January or later.  But, it is what it is and I just know to always be prepared for registration at any minute anyway haha

Since the deadline for child verification is 9/20, the earliest pre-registration can be is 9/23. Usually it's held fairly soon after a deadline. They also might hold it on 9/30 just because they set that as the cut-off point for age.
