I have been going for the past few years and it has grown from 30k to 100k in that time.   I really enjoy it,  I have never been to the AZ one so I can't compare them.   The panels are usually a variety of individual actors some old, some current.   I love panels so I always do the VIP so I can get into the main room,  which is always cleared for every panel.   You can walk into most.  Exceptions in the past was Bruce Campbell, wierd science and Scott Wilson.

The floor is packed with the usual things at cons.   No big toy vendors with exclusive just for DCC though.

Does that help?

Yes,  that is all very helpful information.  I too love the panels and our kids are now getting into cosplay which I'm sure there is a lot of. Looks like I will be investing in the VIP passes

Let me know if people want to do a meet up and I'll step up and arrange it.   I'm born and raised so I should be able to find us somewhere decent in the area.

dear fellow denver residents i need your help. and you have to be over 21. a local brewery in denver is putting out a Snape beer for denver comic con. they are holding a release party and handing out pint glasses for it on May 20. Only the first 200 people will get one. If anybody here can help me get the beer(I'm gonna assume that will be impossible, probably will be in kegs) or a pint glass i will make it worth your while. My fiancé said if i can get either or both she will watch all the horror movies and goto wrestling events that she would usually say no too. brewery is Breckenridge Brewery and the link is here http://www.breckbrew.com/events-1/denver-comic-con-beer-release

please contact me if you can help. and i usually attend dcon and nycc so if you need help there i can return it. but serious will make it worth your while thank you.

[member=436]stonecutterjeff[/member]  I get lasik that day so I can't go to the event :(  Watch for promotions though sometimes they will also have them for one day at rock bottom or another local bar if you order the beer.  If they do that let me know and I will try to make it to one of those.

Just booked my flight! :) Found a great deal from SFO roundtrip for only $150.

Does anyone know if there are sites/message boards where you can find rooms with extra spaces? The hotels are too expensive right now (and mostly sold out anyway). Otherwise I may look into Airbnb.

My family and I may be switching things up next year and decide that Denver Comic Con is for us.  I've heard nothing but good things and SDCC is just insane - fun, but too much for us.

[member=354]hikanteki[/member] welcome aboard!    I don't know of a site but I'll be on the look out.  I'm condo sitting that weekend and they live 2 blocks away so I'm very excited not to have to commute in everyday.

[member=1731]Pyramid[/member] from what I have heard DCC is similar to the one in Phoenix (though I've never been to the Phoenix one).  If you have any questions while you're deciding feel free to ask me.   It is a lot calmer than SDCC, but it also doesn't have Hollywood pumping money into it and there is zero swag.

Good to know, man!  I am one of the few who has next to zero interest in swag unless it's MtG cards or free comics, original art, Mondo posters, etc.  ;)

Just booked an Airbnb. Good on flights, lodging, and badge...which means I’m all set!  :D

As an aside, are the hotel prices in the DCC block pretty standard for Denver or do they seem expensive this year? I haven’t gone in previous years so I can’t compare, but I thought they seemed a little too high...the absolute cheapest one (Sheraton) was $129/night and the reviews on that one are pretty questionable. Most of them are in the $139-$179 range, with two above. For a city in the price range of Denver (above average pricing compared to the midwest/interior west but still not as high as the coasts), this doesn’t seem like a special event price at all.

Compare this to Phoenix Comicon, where all hotels are $104-$131 double/$141 quad. The Denver block average is also significantly higher than the Emerald City Comicon average, and even slightly higher than most of the WonderCon DTLA hotels were this year. Is DCC becoming so big they can justify higher prices? Or is it just a more expensive time of year? Or did they just not go a great job negotiating with the hotels? Or all of the above, or something else?
Title: Re: 2016 Denver Comic Con
Post by: NCDS on May 16, 2016, 07:26:52 PM
That has been the standard price of hotels in the area for the past 3 years, they haven't gone up much.  Denver has been deemed un-affordable to live in which I think has led to high hotel rates.  They were discussing on the news this morning that revenue for Denver hotels is down 6%

I think it comes down to they aren't doing a good job at negotiating a good price.

Asian food in Denver is not common but I'll look.  There are plenty in suburbs.   Just in case I current have a reservation at the Stout Street June 18th at 7pm for 8 people

http://places.singleplatform.com/stout-street-social/menu?ref=google

It looked like it had a menu that everyone could find something.   I went there for a happy hour and enjoyed the food.  More important it is really close, so walking distance.  Is it too pricey though?  I don't eat out much so I always think things are too pricey :)

Update: Found Asian close by but it is really pricey http://places.singleplatform.com/cholon-modern-asian-bistro/menu?ref=google

This one is about 20-30 mins away but we can take the free mall shuttle most of the way

oh good :)

is 7pm a good time?  I think that is the usual times of meet-ups at other cons and usually the last panel is around 5pm.  Last meet-up I set up was a movie during WC, much easier know the right time for that one.  I figure if there is a later panel changing the time 30 mins will be easy.

That's unfortunate.   Sorry to hear you can't make it.  I can try to see if someone would take the badges from you but I'm not sure they would get here in time for them to use them :(

So at the last minute, my husband has decided to join us.  If you still have one 3-day pass that's an e-ticket we would love to purchase it from you.  PM me if you still have it.

DCC Mini-Review:

This was my first time at Denver Comic Con, and I went as an exhibitor. Denver CC had been on my interest list and I thought this would be a good opportunity as I?d get to go for free (besides putting in my time) and see what it was like. Their guest list has been getting better each year, and this year it looked great!

I was surprised at how big the convention center was. It?s not as big as San Diego, but it was pretty close. Felt bigger than Anaheim. The convention was huge, and they didn?t even use the entire space. Although it was crowded, it never felt horribly so. Estimated official attendance this year was 114,000 and there is room to grow.

Despite the numbers, it seemed very laid back and friendly, much more so than any of the other conventions I?ve been to. It could be because it?s fairly new and doesn?t have as many exclusives or panels or big names that cause people to get cutthroat, but it could also be that perhaps the location...almost all shows I?ve been to are on the West Coast whereas this one was in Denver so it had more of a friendly relaxed midwestern/mountain region vibe.

Programming was fantastic and I wish that I would have been able to go to more panels. I was not expecting much (other than celebrity guest panels) since there really is not very much information at all about any of the panels on their website. The schedule went up but it only lists the title, not the description. However, once I got there and got a program book, I was pretty floored at some of the descriptions -- i.e. they had a panel Dinosaurs of MST3K which had the show?s producer and a panel of paleontologists. There was also a panel that featured members of the Denver Symphony Orchestra, comparing the origins of superheroes to classical music. While I unfortunately missed these (as my shift was going on then), these are EXACTLY the types of panels I love to see -- coming at things from different angles, including behind the scenes guests (that weren?t really advertised beforehand.) These are a bigger draw for me than celebs and I think they really need to be advertised beforehand...they may have actually enticed me to buy a ticket! :O

The panels I did see... Jim Shooter talking about the animation of Captain America comics, 2 Indie Short Films with Q&A, Karate Kid Reunion, and Stan Lee. All fantastic, especially Stan Lee! I also liked that they had a panel room dedicated to Indie Films...the one I went to I knew nothing about the films or people behind them, but it was cool to hear them talk about the thought process that goes on in putting them together.

The exhibitor hall (which included the ?Merchant Mesa? and ?Artist Valley?) was massive. A lot of different vendors than I usually see, probably due to the location. Oh they had a beer tent too which served the official con beer, Snape-ricot apricot ale! There weren?t a lot of big name vendors, and it leaned a little more generic commercial than indie but it was still fun to walk around and see. I got all the exclusives I was interested in within the first hour (signed Snape-ricot print, Uh-Oh Felipe Pink Colorway Vinyl from Juan Munoz, metallic Wonder Woman small figure from UCC distributing, and a couple various things from their merch booth like pins and the Snape-ricot pint glass). This would never be possible at SDCC. Comic vendors were kind of sparse (though there were a few), and it was lacking in big or even mid-sized publishers. Valiant and Skybound were there, but no Dark Horse, IDW, etc...though they did give away plenty of big Dark Horse swag bags. No big name vendors except UCC (if that counts?) and Kidrobot, which was actually cool to see (they are based in Boulder) but they did not have any exclusives.

They had a music stage where they had bands playing most of the time. Some were better than others, but still a nice idea.

I do want to go back, and preferably as an attendee to check out more of the panels. I think I liked it better than ECCC this year. I see more thought and creativity put into the panel descriptions at DCC. (i.e. I felt like ECCC?s panels skew too much towards ?here?s a guest, now ask questions? rather than having actually topics or discussions, and don?t have as much of a focus on multiple aspects as I?d wished.) Also, I was impressed by the balance of independent spirit and mainstream appeal at DCC. This is one thing I had appreciated in the past about ECCC, except somehow ReedPop managed to fudge up both independent spirit (which was, sadly, expected) and mainstream appeal (this was, on the other hand, completely mind-boggling) during their first full year of acquisition. I?m hoping RP can recover ECCC next year otherwise DCC may replace ECCC for me next year...or maybe I?ll go to both!

Updated info about Denver Comic Con, including dates for next year (30 June - 02 July, 2017), which puts it just weeks before CCI in San Diego.

Denver Comic Con reveals record attendance, sets 2017 dates
Downtown’s pop-culture confab is one of the largest in the nation

By   JOHN WENZEL | [email protected]
PUBLISHED: July 28, 2016 at 10:11 am | UPDATED: July 28, 2016 at 4:46 pm

The record size of this year’s Denver Comic Con led to some interesting scenes inside the Colorado Convention Center in last month - like when a pregnant woman waiting for an autograph from Marvel Comics icon Stan Lee went into labor.

“After her water broke, Stan Lee asked for her to come to the front of the line so she could get her autograph before she went to the hospital,” said Sam Fuqua, executive director of Pop Culture Classroom, which programs the event.

Denver Comic Con’s fifth anniversary attracted more than 114,900 people in 2016, making it one of the biggest pop-culture gatherings in the nation.

“We use total attendance, which is different than ticket sales, and what we’re finding is that other cons have different ways of accounting for that,” Fuqua said.

Regardless, the June 17-19 event at the Colorado Convention Center was the largest consumer convention in Colorado, and one of the largest in the Rocky Mountain region. Only Salt Lake City and Phoenix have similarly themed events to rival Denver’s.

Adding to the bustle is the fact that Denver Comic Con took place on the same weekend as Denver PrideFest, a festival that the Con partnered with beforehand. After the Con opened with a record crowd, it featured more than 300 hours of panels with artists, celebrities and industry voices, as well as a number of panels devoted to LGBT issues.

“We had a group wedding to conclude the con on Sunday afternoon that featured 10 different couples with a variety of relationships, including same gender couples and a trans couple,” Fuqua said. “That was new this year, and we hope to to continue to celebrate the diverse communities that all come under this comic-con umbrella.”

Guests in 2016 included the aforementioned Lee (following his 2013 no-show) in what was billed as his second-to-last comic book convention appearance, “Game of Thrones” star Lena Headey and “Karate Kid” star Ralph Macchio, among dozens of others.

As the largest programming event for the nonprofit Pop Culture Classroom, Denver Comic Con devoted the biggest chunk of its show floor - or more than 9,000 square feet - to youth programming and education. And despite occupying a total of 500,000 square feet at the Convention Center, the Comic Con literally had to work around another convention.

“Because of the high demand at the Convention Center it’s been challenging year-to-year to get the same dates and spaces,” Fuqua said. “They’re really good about trying to work with us, but this year there was a bill collectors convention right in the middle of all our programming. I kept walking by the big Mile High Ballroom in there and seeing signs for it. It was kind of weird.”

Fuqua said he and other organizers are working to balance new and familiar programming for the 2017 event, which will return to the Convention Center June 30-July 2, with tickets on sale this fall.

“It went well this year and we got positive feedback from attendees, so we’re just trying to learn from that to provide a better fan experience. It’ll be very difficult to top Stan Lee, though. An icon like that doesn’t come around very often.”
