AMD Ryzen versus Intel Processor
« on: March 09, 2022, 08:08:49 PM »
I am going to build a new computer.  I want it to be a bit more than I need, I find when I do that they last me longer.

I have two people helping me build but one is Pro AMD Ryzen and the other is Pro Intel (i9 to be specific).

Do we have some computer guru's out there that could chime in and tell me which one they prefer and why?

I built a system recently and decided on a 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11700K @ 3.60GHz   3.60 GHz
I think it was $300 ish

I wanted modern architecture especially due to upgrading the os to win 11

Win 11 is a lot of the reason I decided to do this now.  They don't support my current processor and overall the computer is getting slower.  She was built in 2014!

I recently rebuilt a mid-range pc, nothing too crazy. Ryzen 5 and 24gb ram. For streaming, and gaming and stuff AMD is really the best way to go. Esp. for multi-tasking.

as expected the bench marks on the two are within 1% of each other ;)

If you are going for Intel, go for alder lake.  The 12th gen marks Intel getting back in the game.  It's going to cost though.  Being the latest tech, it won't be cheap.  The new MBs aren't cheap and to get the most out of it you'll need DDR5.  But it is one of those generational leaps like sandy bridge was so it should last you a few years.

If you are going to get a GPU, it might be cheaper to get a pre-built.  Individual GPU prices are still high.  Although not as high as they were a year ago.  The entire computer I'm typing on cost as much as just the GPU would have cost purchased separately.

My build recently...top-end AMD and an RTX 3090, luckily got all the parts for MSRP.  But here's the entire build.

Thank you You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login for sharing your build I was looking at a lower processor but that is the one everyone is recommending to me.  I am torn because after I pick a new motherboard for it, I end up spending double.

The challenge w/building anything is that sooner or later (sometimes more soon) the build becomes 'obsolete'.  Note that *that* is totally subjective.

For example: while I do gaming on my rig, 4K wouldn't really do much for me at all, hence the monitors that support 1440p.  I played the long game and was able to snag a RTX 3090 from Best Buy for MSRP, and this build lets me record videos and learning things for my blog, as well as help me w/the streaming I do for work, along with all the conference calls/engagements that I run everyday/all day.

I knew going in that the next gen AMD would be based on a different socket set so I accepted that the upgrade path from here would cost a bit more.  But this build should last me more than at least 4 years.

And I went w/AMD cause it was better for the primary workload (work) where gaming/personal was second. I thought briefly for grabbing a Threadripper, but that would be just silly.  Some say the 5950X is silly, but I was ok w/that level of silliness :D

5950X is probably the best move without going to Threadripper, especially with 7K series on route.

That's exactly why I did it.  For gaming, the most taxing game I've played on this was MS Flight Simulator.  Work has pretty much a ton of MS stuff running. And nary a hiccup :)

Only 4 years?  I was hoping for another 8, though my needs are low so I maybe that will help it stay alive longer.

Only game I really might play at this point is that Evil Dead Game.
