1:00-2:00 Spotlight on Richard and Pat Lupoff- Two of the pioneers of comics fandom are at Comic-Con as special guests to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the birth of comics fandom. Richard and Pat Lupoff appeared as Captain Marvel and Mary Marvel at a WorldCon science fiction convention in Pittsburgh in 1960 and jump-started comics fandom. Articles about comics ("All in Color for a Dime") that appeared in their sf fanzines Xero inspired publication of comics-oriented zines and led to meeting fans around the country, helping form the basis of fandom. The Lupoffs will talk with friend and fellow fandom founder Maggie Thompson about their lives in and out of comics. Room 4

 1:00-2:00 Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated Screening and Q&A- The gang from Crystal Cove is packing up its best traps and bringing them to San Diego, and it's no mystery as to why fans have embraced this most recent take on Scooby-Doo from Warner Bros. Animation. Supervising producers Spike Brandt and Tony Cervone (both veterans of Duck Dodgers) and producer Mitch Watson (Ben 10: Race Against Time) present a special screening of the first-season finale and a lively panel discussion on the adventures that await Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, and Velma in season two. Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated airs Tuesdays at 7:30 E & P/6:30 C on Cartoon Network and the original movie Scooby-Doo! Legend of the Phantosaur will be released on DVD September 13. Room 6A

1:00-2:30 Comic-Con How-To: Establishing Shots: Environments in Visual Storytelling with Professor Elvin Hernandez- This lecture focuses on environments and layout in visual storytelling to enhance the overall experience of animation, comics, film, or gaming. Professor Elvin Hernandez will view and study environments as characters within the storytelling structure and how they relate to the action being played throughout the scene. Elements of perspective, line weight, and texture will be touched upon as well. Elvin Hernandez is a faculty member of the Animation Department within the Art Institute of Washington, DC. He is a freelance comic book artist and illustrator, mostly working with Kaiser Studio Productions, and is working on a book for Focal Press, which concentrates on background and layout design.  1:30-2:30 Comics Arts Conference Session #15: The Comic Book Project: Creativity, Comics, and Academic Success in the Imperial Valley- Over the past three years, students in grades K-12 from Imperial County, California, have been creating comics in their social studies, science, English, and math classrooms as part of a U.S. Department of Education grant. They are using the Comic Book Project to boost academic skills, test scores, and individual success. This presentation features the work of participating students alongside demos from students, teachers, and coordinators. Lori Campos (Imperial County Office of Education), Anthony Arevalo (Imperial County Office of Education), Imperial County student Hallie Campos, and Shaila Mulholland (San Diego State University) will introduce the process and products of this unique educational model and provide tools and strategies for replication in any other school. Michael Bitz (Center for Educational Pathways), founder of the Comic Book Project, will be present to introduce the program and describe the successes and challenges of comics in school classrooms.
