Joshua Loya is a martial artist, public speaker, and professional adventurer who has taken it upon himself to help others craft compelling stories. In his youth, combat sports and athletics were not generally available to him because he was at very high risk for losing his eyesight. Joshua found solace in comics and genre fiction, despite eventually losing his eyesight and pursuing martial arts full-time. Scott Brick is an American actor, writer, and award-winning narrator of over 600 audiobooks. He has narrated books for a number of high-profile authors, including Michael Crichton, Frank Herbert, and Isaac Asimov.

Comics Arts Conference special guest Eric Shanower is the award-winning cartoonist of the graphic novel series Age of Bronze, a retelling of the story of the Trojan War. With cartoonist Skottie Young, he adapted six of L. Frank Baum's Oz books to a series of New York Times bestselling graphic novels. He wrote the Eisner Award-winning comics series Little Nemo: Return to Slumberland with art by Gabriel Rodriguez. Shanower will elucidate the historical research and creative choices involved in crafting his comics. Moderated by Randy Duncan (Henderson State University).

Illustrator and comic book historian Arlen Schumer (The Silver Age of Comic Book Art) marks the centennial of Kirby's birth with a multimedia retrospective about how an uneducated, first-generation son of European Jewish immigrants growing up in the Lower East Side of New York City named Ya'akov Kurtzberg became acknowledged by both professionals and fans alike as the single greatest artist and storyteller in the history of comic books, Jack "King" Kirby.

After talent, the most important thing an up-and-coming writer needs is information on how to break into the writing profession as an art and a craft. Having written nearly 400 produced television episodes (with roughly half of that as producer), several hundred comics for DC, Marvel, and Image, and five big-budget movies that have grossed over a billion dollars around the world, J. Michael Straczynski (JMS) once again shares his knowledge with new writers to help them break in and improve their work. Note: This is not a lecture but rather uses a Q&A format, so come equipped with good questions.

You will realize that you do not need any fancy equipment to draw your heart out after seeing Kim Jung Gi' s outrageous live drawing! You will get a chance to see an empty canvas transform into a completed scene with human anatomy and perspective in just 90 minutes. Kim Jung Gi is an established artist from South Korea who has the ability to visualize drawing before making his marks. He has taught manwha (comic book) art at universities and private schools, published numerous sketchbooks, and worked on the TLT, Tiger the Long Tail webtoon.

The CAC's poster session gives attendees the opportunity to interact directly with presenters. Come talk one-on-one with these scholars about their projects! Plashka Webster, Victoria Sanchez, Grace Toyonaga, Tiana Mamaghani, Ashley Jabro, Zachary Brown, and Timothy Stiven present the student-designed graphic novel Windy and the Spirit Skies and share the process the students and faculty went through to create this project. Danielle Kohfeldt, Maricela Correa-Chavez, and Julia Stern examine how people occupying subordinated social identities experience and co-create fan culture in comic fandoms. Derek Heid traces a high school comics studies course from its inception to its present-day status as a class awaiting approval, including the obstacles its creators have experienced along the way. John A. Walsh presents the results of a study conducted with Shawn Martin and Jennifer St. Germain of the key features of fan mail published in The Amazing Spider-Man from 1963 until the present.
