From the program guide. Returns to San Jose but moves to the fall:

I actually like that 2020 date. I think it’s better than having it in April or in August—not so many cons to worry about.
-
I like the new dates too. It puts SVCC pretty solidly at the end of Con season.
-
I am curious to see how this new date works out next year.
-
I’m not fond of them changing dates / months every year. I really don’t care when it is (except for July), as long as it’s consistent.
-
I’d also like it to be the same season, but I don’t think they had much of a choice this year. I suspect they moved it even further out next year to avoid running into the same possible conflicts in the spring and summer (late summer turned out to be extremely saturated on the west coast.) I think them securing dates over a year in advance is a good sign, so fingers crossed that they’ll be prepared enough to put in a top tier show next year...since this year wasn’t.
-
I agree with Hikanteki. I suspect that they're trying to find their own space apart from WonderCon in the spring and SDCC in the summer. I'm okay with this move as long as it stays consistent in timing for the next couple of years.
-
One of the exhibitors said that the con sent them an email saying they are rebranding, and will announce the name in a few weeks.
I do notice that the page that shows next year's dates has the logo, but not the name.
-
Interesting. From the start there has been a little bit of an identity issue in my opinion.
-
Hmm, now it's possible it might conflict with LA Comic Con. Although it is usually Halloween weekend, this year's LA Comic Con is Oct 11-14.
-
That is a conflict I can live with
-
There is still no booking at the San Jose convention center for SVCC in October or any other month for that matter. Oct 16-18 is still open so it's not booked under a new name so ?????

LA Comic Con is surprisingly early this year, Sept 25-27, so there is no conflict.
-
They haven't even updated any of their social media since November 1st. I hope the show is actually continuing this year...
-
I've been wondering this too... they still have last year's dates on their sites. No announcements, no nothing. I'm wondering if the're going through a change in management behind the scenes.
-
SVCC is usually late on updating. It was either last year or the year before, their website had the prior year's stuff for months after the event.
-

After last years SVCC, someone posted, I think @hikanteki (https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=354), that a vendor said they were told by SVCC that there was new management and they were going to be re-branding.
Maybe that's the delay.
-
SVCC is now SiliCon, and Adam Savage is taking over as creative director.

-
Silicon? Did Gavin Belson come up with the new name?
Overall, I'm 50/50 about the new name, also curious about the con’s future.
-
Ugh... that name is ripe for insults... but I could live with it. Is Woz no longer involved?

Say's he's still involved, but not much in the way of details.
-
The name could probably be better, but I care more about what they do with the con itself. Especially after how it went last year...Adam Savage has his work cut out for him.
Also, from the rebranded website at https://siliconsj.com/:
"And fear not Woz fans! Woz is still a part of the show and will continue to contribute his energy and expertise to the event, just in a more behind the scenes capacity."
-
Adam Savage's name is now on the logo, so it looks like he will have significant creative control.

Also, badges (including VIP) are on sale now!

Who is going?
-
Who is going?
I'll go at least one day. Hopefully more.
-
I’m waiting until the schedule gets released to see if it’s worth getting tickets.
-
I'm also waiting for the schedule. I was disappointed last year so I want to see what direction it's going before I commit.
-
Good advice

I’ll probably still go since the con is only 10min away from where I live, but I was also rather disappointed with last year’s offering. Instead of growing, it seemed to have shrunk in scale. Now I don’t want it to be as big as SDCC or anything, but I feel like the Bay Area could use a con as big as Wondercon.
-
Which used to be in the Bay Area :(
-
... I feel like the Bay Area could use a con as big as Wondercon.
Wondercon was the Bay Area con. But it couldn't be held at Moscone one year and went south. It stayed south.

Yeah, I was so sad about that.
Fun fact, Wondercon used to be at the Marriott in downtown Oakland. It was where I got my first Jim Lee sketch.
-
There was fault on both sides in that. Moscone wouldn't give WonderCon any dates less than 6 months out, and Anaheim was very welcoming. And I'm sure it was easier for CCI to plan the whole thing closer to home base.
-
It's interesting that their previously unfortunate delayed timing may help this year's convention be more popular if we're able to control the virus outbreak by the fall. I can see more guests wanting to book with the con due to the cancellations of numerous cons during the spring/summer.

To add to that — had it still been in March, it would have gotten cancelled. Santa Clara county officially cancelled all gatherings of over 1000 people:

Saw that Cinequest is moving the part of its schedule to August, though their website is a bit of a mess.

From an email this morning (Jul 6th)
Hi SiliCon Nation!
You may have heard that Adam will be giving an update later today about SiliCon's exciting future plans with Adam Savage. Initially, it was going to be a Facebook live event, but due to a change in Adam's schedule, he won't be able to make it. So, Adam will be posting a video later today to share all of our plans and will reschedule the Facebook live event in the coming weeks.
Make sure to visit the website often to watch the video and get all of the updates.

SiliCon has officially been cancelled.
https://www.friendsofcc.com/2020/07/07/silicon-2020-canceled/
If you purchased badges already, you will be given the choice of a refund or rolling over to next year's con.
-
I get that they were trying to stay upbeat, and I don't think anyone expected any show this year not to get canceled. But selling the cancelation announcement as "Adam Savage wants to give you something to look forward to, so mark your calendars for Monday, July 6th for a BIG announcement!" just seems kind of...desperate.
-
Also, it feels a little "desperate" to end the announcement by plugging the online store to buy merchandise for Silicon when there's yet to be the first Silicon.
-
Adam Savage is selling 2 minute video interactions for $100 a pop. Whee...
Not expecting much from this 'virtual version'.
-
WOW! I got the email and didn't even click on the make a reservation link because I thought it was pretty cheesy. But $100 for a two minute conversation?
I'm actually at a loss for words to express my feelings about this.
-
While (in my opinion) indeed exorbitant, that's also nearly the same price as most 2-3 minute conversations sold by ReedPop's Metaverse... (except for Misha Collins, his was like $362 ::) )
-
20 more reservations for the two minute call were just added due to the "overwhelming response".

They said more were added because the first batch sold out. So I guess that means that there’s some sort of demand for $100 2-minute Zoom calls with Adam Savage, even if it’s not us.
-
Hey, if Adam Savage can make more money, more power to him.
-
I think I'm at the point where I would rather pay money not to have another zoom call ...
