Title: ECCC 2018: March 1-4, 2018
Post by: Transmute Jun on March 06, 2017, 09:02:18 AM
Yep, now that ECCC 2017 is over, it's time to start planning for 2018! Who intends to go next year? I know I'll be there!

As of now, unless something comes up, I too will be planning on coming back.

Can I get a calendar link for this one? [member=283]Devorah[/member] or [member=317]Zero[/member]? Thanks!

I really wish I could go, but it's this one or Gallifrey One. Although-that new Funko experience at their HQ would be a nice incentive to check this one out at least once.

While I would love to see you at ECCC, I should point out that Mario's tour of the Funko HQ was because he won a 'golden ticket' at last year's SDCC Fundays. It's not available to the general public. However there are Funko exclusives and a Fugitive Toys party at ECCC. I know Mario and Karatekid went to the party. Maybe they can give a review?

Sorry if I was unclear. I am aware that Mario's tour was unique (so jealous!!). However, Funko recently announced that they had signed a lease for a 90,000 sq ft building that would include a flagship store (I couldn't think of a way to word it-I should have looked it up first. "Funko Experience" was my terminology).
They also talked about it in the panel. They said, in the panel, that they won't really do HQ tours anymore (too much secret information that could get leaked), so I didn't mention that. I was talking about visiting the store, which will be part of their new headquarters.
They mentioned an opening time frame of June, but some on the panel snickered at that. I would think it might be open by next ECCC.

https://funko.com/blogs/press-releases/funko-announces-headquarters-expansion

From the link above (emphasis mine):
Quote
The Company signed a long-term lease for the iconic Port Gardner Building which was most recently home to Trinity Lutheran College and will remodel the 90,000 square foot space, transforming the downtown Everett building into a space that will reflect the personality of the Funko brand.  The space will ultimately accommodate approximately 300 employees in its expanding art, marketing, sales, finance, information technology, human resources, operations and legal departments and will feature a 6,000 square foot flagship store for visitors to shop the expansive collection of licensed products, including Funko Pop! Vinyls, Dorbz, Plush and more. The flagship store will be an interactive opportunity for visitors to dive in and experience the heart of Funko’s fandom.

That same post also mentions:
Quote
The new Funko headquarters will also serve to showcase the unique phenomenon that has garnered the impressively loyal following the Company has today. The Company intends to create a pop-culture hub in Everett for Funko fans, hosting events to celebrate in conjunction with major pop culture events in the area.

I would guess that they would probably have some sort of event in the ECCC time frame, which would be very fun.

Apparently the flagship store is going to be separated into different theme areas like Marvel, Disney, Star Wars and so on and besides the retail items there will be things like the pop and dorbz statues that you see at the con booths. Very nice idea for people that want to take photos of that sort of thing.

Yeah, I wasn't allowed to take any photos of certain areas at all. They didn't mind us watching the work get done, but I can't say anything about what I saw that is a secret. And yep, let the jealousy flow through you.  >:D

Yes, very exciting!

For those who qualify as press or pros, applications will open up next week. If you submit before September 29, they will give you a decision by October 6, which is BEFORE the general attendee sale. I am super-impressed at this level of organization and can only hope that CCI might follow their example... ;)

So, if I buy passes for ECCC and then it turns out I can't go-are you allowed to sell them at cost? I still haven't fully committed to going because it is so close to Gallifrey One, but I don't want to miss out on passes in case I can.

It's like other ReedPop cons. Officially you are not allowed to resell/transfer badges. Realistically, if you can't go and you sell your badge to a friend at cost, ReedPop isn't going to care. At the con, scalpers stand right outside the convention center doors selling badges.

If you decide to participate in the sale, send me a PM.

I am going to try I think for the 4 day ticket. We don't know yet if Alexi will be stationed stateside or overseas, if she stateside I'll be visiting her but if she is overseas I'll be able to afford to go to ECCC since I won't be traveling to see her.

Good luck everyone with tickets. This one is not in the cards for me this year. I may try in 2019, and skip Gallifrey (it hurts to even type that).

Maybe I will try out Wondercon this year...

Sorry to hear that, Ang!

Honestly, since you're into Doctor Who, I'd say that Gallifrey is a better con. ECC is a fun con, but it's not as detailed or intimate as Gallifrey. You'll have a broader appeal, and a lot of high quality smaller panels, but the main stage is just single actors with Q&A. No studio panels.

WonderCon is worth making an effort to attend, if only because it's 'Comic Con Lite' and there are studio panels and a chance to see some good content from a Hollywood perspective.

I tried in my meeting but got an error saying tickets went on sale September 27, 2017 and finally got into the waiting room. I couldn't get back to the laptop and thankfully my wife got logged in and got 2 4 days and Grand Hyatt. We spoke about it last night but she had Dr appointment this morning and wasn't sure if she'd be home in time.

After a few nice write up, reviews and endorsements of ECCC from TJ in particular, I took the plunge and went last year and had a great time! It's a big con that still feels small. It's a big con in the sense it has the large variety of pop culture areas like a NYCC and SDCC but on a much smaller scale thus the small con feel. To me it's very comparable to WonderCon IMO but less Hollywood presence.

I highly recommend it. My biggest endorsement would be to say it was a good enough Con where I'm going again this year! Ticket, flight, room and rental car secured!

It's a big con. Attendance was 91,000 last year (I believe that's badges sold, not people per day). I'd say it's about as large as WonderCon. There is a lot to offer, especially in the way of comics, Artists' Alley, cosplay, gaming and writing/books. The exhibit floor is quite large and goes through multiple areas, but there aren't really any 'big' booths with massive lines... save for the ECCC merchandise booths and the Funko booth (although that went to a lottery last year). There are entertainment guests, who generally appear on the main stage, but this is where ECCC falls behind its size. There are no 'studio' panels and the panels with the entertainment guests are much closer to a Wizard World type audience Q&A than the type of panel you would see at WonderCon or SDCC. IMHO, this is the only thing that's holding ECCC back from being a major national con.

There is a lot to see on the exhibit floor, but it depends how long you like to spend at booths. If you're just walking through and looking, you can easily do it in a day. If you want to go to Artists' Alley and chat with artists, it can be a lot longer. If you want to dig through bins of comics or discuss unique merchandise with the creators, that can take more time too. If you're a book fan, then meeting authors and getting your books signed will take a big chunk of time.

If you're interested in Funko, Fugitive Toys usually hosts a party during one night of the con, so that would be a good event as well. If you're interested in attending, keep an eye on the Funko Funatics board.

Hope this answers your question!

And Seattle is not that far. A 2-3 hour flight North? Pretty minimal. A good con to make your first travel con.

I've been every year since 2012 but will most likely skip 2018. It just seems like a good time to take a break.

I had hoped to see an upward trajectory for this con (especially after the ReedPop buyout) but that hasn't been the case. They've had plenty of time to move in that direction if they wanted to, but now I'm just not sure that they care -- their guest lineup and management isn't really any better than it was in 2012-2013. Areas in which I have actually seem improvement are anime presence (which is nice, but I generally go to anime cons rather than ECCC for that) and exclusives (which has overall slowly gotten more interesting.)

ECCC was originally my replacement for WonderCon, but now we have SVCC which is at least as good as ECCC/WonderCon, and the emerging SFCC which looks like it has the same kind of setup as ECCC, just a notch down (for now).

Add to that hotels getting more and more expensive. The first few years, it was easy to get a credible hotel for under $100/night or close to it -- now not so much. (The Quality Inn for $105 this year has pretty nasty reviews. The cheapest decent looking one is $145.)

ECCC still a good con -- just not an every year con for me anymore. But who knows, maybe in a few months I'll decide I miss it and go up for Thursday and/or Friday like I did in 2015... :P

Your reviews and endorsements was also another reason for my plunge to go last year so bummed to hear you're not planning to go. There's still time though!

It's the wrong thread but pathetically I've yet to do SVCC despite being down the street. That time of year is just busy but if you're comparing it to ECCC and WonderCon than I'll prioritize and go for sure in 2018. You and my fellow Bay Area peeps please keep me on target for it!

Yeah that is pricey and between flight, rental car, food, etc make this a bit too expensive for my budget BUT I did airbnb and found really good prices and value. An alternative option for anyone looking to save $$$.

[member=2335]LibertyRoxx[/member]  Glad to help! As you could see during the buying process, if you're on the ball you can get 4-Day badges, but it doesn't pay to lollygag, even for a couple of minutes. ;)

[member=4801]BenEatsRice[/member]  Love it! Glad your wife is onboard! You can still attend in 2018 if you would like, but you would have to buy individual day badges rather than a 4-Day badge. And I'd recommend jumping on it, because individual Saturdays sold out within 2-3 days of going on sale last year.

[member=354]hikanteki[/member]  I know you have been unhappy with the entertainment guests for the past few years. I agree they are hit or miss. But I also enjoy this con for other elements (gaming, literary guests/panels/etc.) and it's an easy one to get to, so I'll keep going for a while longer. ;)

[member=414]karatekid[/member]  SVCC is definitely worth attending. I'd say it's better than WonderCon. I had just as much fun as I did at ECCC, although there is a bit of a different vibe. More 'techhy' and less 'offbeat', if that makes any sense. I think it's the difference between the feel of 'Pacific Northwest' and 'Silicon Valley'. The spirit of the area really does infiltrate these cons.

Saturday badges sold out this morning. It took an entire week, which is a bit longer than last year.

I have to wonder what would happen if they sold as many 4 day badges as they had spaces available, instead of single days. Would 4-day still sell out right away? Or is the 4-day sellout because of the significant price difference?

Is that right? I thought last year it took a week and a day (8 days). So it actually took one day less this year. Either way it seems that's relatively similar so if that's the case, Sunday should go next about 6 weeks before the Con. Then Friday about a week before the Con. I guess we'll see.

Yup, 8 days for last year is correct. (On sale 10/19/16 and Saturday sold out 10/27/16). So far this year...the time it took 4 day tickets to sell out compared to last year was pretty much a wash, and Saturday was only slightly faster.

Last year, IIRC it took longer for Friday and Sunday tickets to sell out than the year before, and Thursday did not sell out.

I'm actually tempted to do a mid-week excursion. ;) Go up Wednesday, attend Thursday and Friday, and head back Saturday afternoon. It looks like I only have to go about a mile out (which I don't mind) to find reasonably-priced hotels off the block.

Christopher Lloyd and Tom Wilson from BTTF will be at ECCC!

We saw Tom Wilson at SVCC last spring and he is really entertaining. Well worth seeing! We saw Christopher Lloyd at the BTTF panel the year before. He's less 'entertaining' but it's still interesting to hear his stories.

Cool that those two are going there this time. I met Lloyd in 2016 SVCC during his photo-op. The main camera wasn’t working at first, so I had extra time talking to him while we were waiting. He’s pretty nice, so go meet him. Likewise, with Wilson.

So, my hotel is set - at the Hyatt again. Only thing left is the flight. :) Looking at other airports, but most likely will do my local one.

Saturday can be your tour Seattle day! Space Needle, Pike's Place, even Funko HQ if you're a fan. Maybe even a drive up to Canada!

Wonder if Funko HQ will have any LE or Exclusives?   Not a bad idea...

Still holding out for a Saturday badge however.   Fingers crossed.

According to Google maps, Seattle is a 2 hour 44 minute drive from Vancouver.

No guarantees of course, but Funko has had ECCC exclusives for the past 2 years.

There won't be any on the ECCC site. You would have to buy a badge from someone who already has it, or win a contest. ECCC is holding a lot of contests on their Twitter site.

Mel, just so you know, ECCC isn't a 'hang out' sort of con. There's not a lot going on outside of the convention center.

That being said, tickets for all days but Saturday are still available.

If you find the right spot it can be. I was at Old Stove brewery down near the market and met a couple locals and a woman passing through from GB and asked about the con a little bit. I'm a beer geek so I always find some strange place to go but I do venture out kind of far from the convention center. The furthest we've gone was SafeCo field for a game 2 years ago. Nice pub about 1/2 way with a good ruben.

Not a designated meeting place but plenty of places to meet up with people and all within walking distance of the con.

Emerald City Comicon is introducing MUSIC ALLEY this year! This is excellent news. The artist/band Kirby Krackle is the artist most synonymous with ECCC in my opinion. Last year he said ReedPop wouldn't offer him a space in Artist Alley. They let him buy a small press booth, but he turned it down since he didn't like the idea of ReedPop not considering musicians artists. But having a special section to showcase musicians sounds win/win for everyone. There is a pretty big nerd-rock scene in the PNW. Kirby Krackle will be back, and so far the PDX Broadsides and Rock Paper Cynic have also been announced as part of Music Alley, with possibly more to come.

Additionally, Kracklefest (Kirby Krackle's annual concert at the Hard Rock Cafe held during ECCC) in its eighth year is finally an official ECCC-sponsored event!

Only so many cons i can go to in a year lol. im lucky i go to ones close by and maybe others in future if all goes right. so far the biggest one for me is SDCC, and the rest are more low key kinda cause not as many days and as much publicity or traffic i guess. but i am happy i find ways to save to go and still enjoy the event at time.

Since it’s Hallmark’s first year at ECCC we don’t know for certain whether or not there will be exclusives, or if they will just be repeating exclusives from other cons. Regardless, I would expect them to be difficult to obtain, but not SDCC-level difficult.

ECCC mentioned on FB (in response to comments about how lackluster this year’s guest lineup is) that there are a couple more guests in the works. Looking at the schedule, there are still spaces in the main room Friday at 2:30 and 5, and Saturday at 4:30...and before noon. Thursday is pretty much wide open too, but not likely that they’ll stack that day.

I can only guess how they budget for cons, as to paying for any celeb, famous people, or other to attend the con at time. then gotta check who can attend and when to plan out the scheduling and all. but guess most traffic is on weekend compared to during week so they try have anyone be at con as many days possible.

They had the same thing last year, where the main stage schedule had a lot of holes, and then they filled it in with some good stuff. I sat in the Main Stage room all day Saturday, and there was only one panel that did not interest me.

Last year was great. So good that it makes 2018 feel somewhat ‘meh’, if you don’t include the comic book arena. I’m going for another reason, but a select group of people do go to cons to meet those big time actors/actresses. For example, 2017 had Evangeline Lilly and her lines were really long. Likewise, for Vincent D'Onofrio. Heck, even the two from Outlander had a big crowd. Now, having David Tennant is cool and he is popular in the world we follow on this forum, but he is not a big time name that everyone around the world will know. There are folks out there that don’t know who David Tennant is or know his works. So as of now, I do agree that the list is somewhat disappointing. However, I’m not surprised. It’s hard to have a great guest list every year. Just is...

Anyway, I am thinking on doing the David Tennant Th. night photo-op (although, his asking price is stopping me from doing it right away).

Im guessing in general it not easy for every con to get every star or celeb to come to a con, cause sometime they cant always be at every con do to stuff they gotta do outside of cons at time. i had checked who was gonna be at SDCC and some i knew and some i didnt but still got some autographs by chance at time. i dont get mad if cant get what i want cause i be happy what i do get at time. i mean u gotta be gratefull when u able to attend any con now days due to how many try try to go to any and how who cant go for any reason. so i say be happy when u can go and who u can meet cause u never know when u gonna have a chance to see or meet them again at any future event.

I'd consider Tennant a really big name...the second this year after Christopher Lloyd (of a different generation, but still an icon.) Tennant's announcement on ECCC's FB page has 3k+ likes so far, and photo-ops are already sold out. As a comparison, the next to most recent celeb announcement, Felicia Day, has 935 likes, and that BB-8 Puppeteer has 218.

Re: not having a great guest list every year -- I've kind of just accepted that this is the direction ReedPop has decided to take ECCC in. It is disappointing, because when I first started going to this con (2012 and 2013...and even the year before I went, 2011) the lineup was pretty solid. 2014 was a small blip and 2015 was great again. It was really exciting to see how things progressed each year, and that's why it's harder for me to justify it by thinking that "they can't have a great lineup every year" -- because for awhile, it really DID seem like it was becoming the type of show where you could just buy tickets as soon as they went on sale and then trust them to put together something really amazing every year. But ReedPop tanked all that in 2016 (that year wasn't just a blip, it was a complete tank). 2017 was more or less a return to form, which was promising, but here we are back in 2018.

And, while I go for other things as well...IMO a good convention should have a couple really solid draws to anchor it. Although, I will say I've seen improvements in other areas, such as an improved anime studio presence and bigger name vendors. I also see a Titmouse Animation Studio Panel on the schedule for Sunday -- I won't be there that day unfortunately, but that is the type of panel that I've wished would show up, so hopefully we'll get more of those in the future. As I've mentioned in an earlier post I'm still not done with it yet, but I don't consider it a "must go" every year anymore.

I, too, consider David Tennant a big name, just other people who aren’t familiar with him won’t. My test is always my friends that don’t follow the geek culture that well, and when I showed a few his photo, they didn’t know who he was.  And finally, I agree about the guest lineup situation.

Anyway, his autograph sessions will go on sale tomorrow morning. Hopefully his asking price for this is better. I couldn’t pull the trigger for his photo-op, because it was $100 + tax and a service fee. If I didn’t have to worry about buying an airline ticket, then sure. Extra money to use. But nope! Ugh!

I can see when u have to fly to a con that is no close by then it is alot to consider when u try save to go to a con and plan what u wanna do most and what u really can afford to do at time. for some that like go to SDCC it is like their vacation so if they get a badge then easier for them to plan flights, place to stay and whatever else. im thankfull i have been able to go to like 2 close by since was like a small con and other is SDCC since learn can volunteer as way to go and live close so save a bundle and save and get needs for days i can go since only gotta volunteer for a day to have chance to go in and then offistes are free for everyone who wanna check stuff and see what they can outside the con.

David Tennant's autograph presale is live:
http://www.emeraldcitycomiccon.com/Tickets/Autographing-Presale-2018/?campaignid=61948859&iusercampaignid=99272644 (http://www.emeraldcitycomiccon.com/Tickets/Autographing-Presale-2018/?campaignid=61948859&iusercampaignid=99272644)

The price is $100 for standard or $130 for Deluxe. Must pay .75 service fee, too.

So, I decided to pull the trigger for his autograph session on Th. afternoon after his panel. A little bit cheaper by doing standard than his photo-op. Sorry, but I couldn't $100 plus tax and a $10 service fee for the photo. Even more if doing the extra copy and digital print. Anyway, I have Billie Pepper's signature already, so this will be a very nice add to my autograph collection.  :)

It looks like the $100 is for one of his 8x10s provided at his table or to have him sign the photo op at the con, $130 is for everything else.

I guess until they do cons on their own time kinda thing, it gonna cost alot to meet and greet with pics and all. guess service fee is like paying the crew for getting him there and setup for day compared to celebs hang out at own booth and have 1 assist o2 for setup their booth and then they charge for a pic predone and signature then if u do pic with celeb that i think should be free. cause u already pay for signed pic of them and whatever else then it can add up fast lol.

Thought about it the last few days and considering we probably won't see David or Christopher again I think we're in for both even for the $ and crowd. Curious what the provided photos would be and they usually have a good assortment. Depends on how they sign it too with some people changing it up for the event, year or the item.

Still one of our favorite cons and cities to enjoy our time in.

That is high because the solos with each would be $160 plus tax. But I think I heard Tenant’s solo ops already sold out, it would give you a chance to get your photo with him still if you missed out on solos.

Is it just me or is the guest line-up kind of weak? Brian Michael Bendis was recently announced, which is a big deal in the comic world (and I'll be sure to have my books ready to be signed), but as far as Entertainment guests, it leaves a bit to be desired. The last time I went to ECCC was a few years ago and the two big stars from Supergirl, Chyler Leigh and Melissa Benoist were slated to appear, but they both cancelled at the last possible minute. I hope they make up for it by attending this year. There's usually a Superhero guest or two (from Flash, Arrow, Gotham, etc.), but I didn't see any on the list. With the show about 5 weeks out, I hope there are some surprises in store!

Is he bringing Jim Parsons with him?  :P

In prior years (not counting last year) there were always really good guests, but this year... Meh. I never attend these shows for the guests, but it's like the icing on the cake.

*rolls dice* C'mon Supergirl!

Extremely weak, but 2016 was worse.
They've never had mind-blowing last minute surprises before...not expecting that to change this year. I think Tennant/Piper is going to end up being this year's last biggest announcement.

When you go to the guests page, the first Spotlight guest is a cosplayer for crying out loud. There's got to be more guests forthcoming. At least give me a WWE wrestler or two.

I guess any con tries to attract any traffic to their event with any guest possible. i have read how some cons do ok and some just fail for one reason or another. gotta just wait and see who the brag about being a guest over time and if u dont gotta grab a badge ahead of time and can get at the door then do what u can if u still wanna go later.

We thought they had to announce more in 2016 as well. But nope. At the very last minute, they finally announced...two football players, who were invited because...they play video games.

One year, I think it was 2016, they had Richard Sherman of the Seahawks on the guest list. Talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel... and dude was charging like $200 for a photo-op (or some really ridiculous amount). It was more than any other celebrity on the list! I found that almost offensive. I realize that some of the guest choices at these conventions are rather vacuous, but geez.

Not sure how they choose who to be a guest at anytime. i guess whoever they call that the guest want so much pay or want the con to cover some expenses but the guest will still charge a price for stuff but yea i guess some expect fans to pay a s**t load for just a pic with star or guest whoever it might be. some charge a decent fee but guess some charge too much, they should be happy fans or anyone still remember them at anytime or they be at booth for long time and no traffic while other guest get the traffic cause understand fans dont always got alot to buy stuff sometimes so guest are happy they are noticed still and charge a small fee for a sign pic and pic with fans. some fans are even happy they get any decent items signed by stars or other at time.

What that means is that you have to register the badge on their site. Last year this meant that you had to enter the number on the back of the badge on their site and your email. That was it. There was no RFID at the con itself.

I  dont know how many cons use rfid, but if it cause people try sell their badge to profit then cons may go that way if they discover that anyone tries to sell it at anytime after they get one at the con or by mail any i guess.

Wondering why they want us to "activate" the badge, when there is really no reason too. (assuming there is no RFID and scanning of the badges).

At NYCC we had to register and activate the badge so that it would scan through the scanners. Think it's just a ruse to trick people who may consider making illegal badges?

I'm trying to find it on their site, but have not found anything.  If memory serves me right, NYCC was very specific about the new system of scanning the badges in and out etc...

I can tell if some cons if not all are starting to use tech to either keep track how many actually go into con and check things out and who try to buy and resale for profit but dont know cause dont check if the cons have a crew who do know where to look to see who try to sale a badge any by chance. it was never liked that when i first went to a con, but saw how easy it was to just pass off a badge hand made and let anyone just walk in and act as if paid for it but never did. so i guess soon all cons will use scanners at any con if they notice or hear about resalers try profit of a badge they got at anytime.

OK, i gotta say- and i mean this in the nicest of ways, since i am certainly *not good* with the grammar, [member=6880]cabler30[/member] ,

your comments are wicked confusing. I really, really have a hard time following what you're trying to say. Believe me, i say this as a person who 'gets' the difficulty in communicating! I *suck* at writing- ask anyone on the blog. But i've learned to try and separate thoughts/ideas into chunks & space them out with breaks. That seems to help get my ideas across and as a result folks respond to the comments more.

again, this is not an 'adminy' thing and is just from a fellow forum member because i think you've got a lot to share with us- it's just that we can't figure it out most of the time

Yes, but they want to make sure of that before you put your name in the lottery. You will have to have your badge number (or at least the confirmation number on your badge barcode email) to enter. That's how they did it last year. It makes sense, because otherwise people could enter multiple times with multiple email addresses.

What day are you going? I couldn't figure it out at first, but when I went to print the ticket, I realized that it said Sunday on it.
Saturday.

When you go to the guests page, the first Spotlight guest is a cosplayer for crying out loud. There's got to be more guests forthcoming. At least give me a WWE wrestler or two.

Looks like you got your wish...  :P

This is nice, but I'd be more stoked if I hadn't met her already at a small, local show. I'd die if they announced Trish Stratus, who never does comic convention appearances.

They've also added former original Power Rangers, David Yost and Walter Jones to the guest list.

Got my badges in the mail on Monday, so I only need to book the shuttle from the airport.

Even though it’s early to rely on any forecast and it’s Seattle after all, but that forecast...not that dandy right now.

Um.... yeah. It's SEATTLE. In early March. It's never going to be good.

To be fair, back when they held this con at the end of March, you could count on at least one reasonable day and slightly warmer temperatures. But generally the weather is pretty bad.

I won the Funko raffle!!! WHOO HOOO!!! Now, if I only collected Funko Pops...  :P

Regarding the weather, the last time I attended ECCC was in 2016 and it was absolutely BEAUTIFUL for 4 straight days. I mean, not a cloud in the sky during the show. The air was cool and crisp and perfect if you're a cosplayer in armor or leather. The day I arrived, a storm had just passed and the day I departed a storm was coming in. lol

Has to be that...I’m also guessing the HQ being nearby probably didn’t help, as that brings in more people to the area to try ECCC while doing the HQ.

Again, only if you are trolling can you score a ticket to an event these days.  Does anyone with a day job ever get a chance to buy tickets?

For Fugitive Toys, twitter notifications are your friend. They don't post too often, so you don't get a ton of notifications.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (February 28, 2018) — PopMinded by Hallmark will generate its brand of pop-culture excitement next week in Seattle, Wash., with a first-ever appearance at the region’s premier fan event.

PopMinded, which debuted nationally in 2016, is Hallmark’s way of celebrating fandom with gifts and collectibles created and chosen with all fans in mind. PopMinded continues and expands on Hallmark’s decade-long tradition of providing event attendees access to Hallmark’s ever-popular products through its event pop-up store.

Look for PopMinded’s pop-up shop at Emerald City Comic Con, scheduled March 1-4 at Washington State Convention Center in Seattle. For this show, PopMinded will introduce an expanded line of PXL8® collectible enamel pins featuring stylized 8-bit renditions of favorite characters-including one pin that is exclusive to the show.

Marvel Comics hero Black Panther is the inspiration for a PXL8 pin available exclusively to Emerald City Comic Con attendees. A trio of two-pack PXL8 pins also will be available at the show: Ant-Man and the Wasp of Marvel Comics, Aquaman and Mera of DC Comics, and Boushh and Han Solo in Carbonite of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.

The three two-packs listed above also will be available at PopMinded’s pop-up store planned for Comic-Con®, scheduled July 19-22 in San Diego, Calif., and New York Comic Con, scheduled Oct. 4-7 in New York City.

Additional details including prices for each product will be announced at the events.

Look for a complete 2018 convention schedule for PopMinded including details of this year’s event-exclusive products to be announced this spring.

I might be wrong but guessing how there are like so many like comic cons around these days that some are becoming more popular then others now. it might because of the day u go or some just dont got the funds to go eveytime as times change. but maybe alot other reasons as well. so if u was able to do more then usual then i see it as a good and bad sign as able get more done i guess.

Really? I found Thursday and Sunday to be the same as last year. Friday busier. I will admit I felt Saturday was less crowded than last year but that's a relative statement since Saturday was very very busy!

Thursday was noticeably less crowded, but that's not surprising since they didn't sell out that day, and a good chunk of the people who were there were watching the Doctor Who panel and then over getting autographs and photo ops.

There was definitely a wider variety of offerings this year, and as usual I found myself bouncing between writing, gaming, cosplay and entertainment guest panels. I love that I am able to do this at ECCC and that everything is such low stress!

Of course, I wasn't trying for Funkos... ;)

Really? I found Thursday and Sunday to be the same as last year. Friday busier. I will admit I felt Saturday was less crowded than last year but that's a relative statement since Saturday was very very busy!

saturday was almost like sdcc.  almost meaning not really but still too crowded.  thursday was a walk in the park.  friday was a walk in a slightly busier park but still a park.

anyway.  my first eccc.  had a good time.  seattle you are cold !!!  but a cool city nonetheless.

Back from ECCC. I went Thursday and Friday and agree that these days were a walk in the park. I also felt special being able to have fun while most everyone else downtown was at work. Then I got to go back home Saturday and have the weekend to myself.  8)

This year felt different...more slick and professional, than previous years. I think this year is the turning point--we're seeing slight signs that ECCC is turning into the "NYCC West" that I'd hoped it'll be (rather than that bungled generic-location NYCC-Lite of 2016) -- still not that many signs, but at least this year it was noticeable. Also, this is the first year that the original founder (Jim Demonakos) was not involved. Not sure if this had anything to do with it, but it's worth mentioning. It did feel like there was a little less local flavor, though at least this time we actually saw the resources promised by the ReedPop buyout begin to materialize.

The Exhibit Hall is the area where we saw the biggest difference. This was the first year at ECCC for Hallmark/Popminded and Tokidoki (though Tokidoki's placement was odd, all the way against the back wall), and Warner Bros. WB had the same booth that they had at Silicon Valley Comic Con, meaning a tiny booth with a wheel that you could spin and get a prize. We also got FYE, Bluefin/Tamashii, Penguin/Random House/Del Rey, Boom and Dark Horse as usual, a pretty respectable Nintendo display on the 4th floor, and of course Funko in a BIG way. I got lucky and scored a 10 AM Thursday Funko lottery spot...and got everything on my list. :)

But one part that was sacrificed for this was IMO the bigger independent creators and artists that can't quite compete with the major vendors, but are too big and not 2D enough to be part of the Artists Alley. ReedPop made a huge deal out of ECCC Homegrown this year, but it seemed pretty anemic...it took me like 10 minutes total to walk through and I felt the location (off in the back corner of the exhibit hall) made it seem like a back-burner idea. Also, my favorite vendor that I most associate with ECCC (ZOMs) and is local to Seattle wasn't there.

Despite the bigger names in the Exhibit Hall...it actually overall seemed smaller this year. I haven't counted the exact # or sq. feet of vendors but it felt like there was more space to walk around and bigger gaps between booths. Also, a legitimate reason for this could have been that they expanded and moved the ECCC Live stage to the main Exhibit Hall. Last year, it was up on the 6th floor with Artists' Alley...but this year, in its previous place, was the new Music Alley -- IMO creating this was an epic move. They had a critical mass--I think 7 or 8--of geek rock bands, with their tables set up around a stage where they had live performances on Friday and Saturday. I caught GeekRockCynic on Friday which I enjoyed. I'd love to see this come back every year.

Artist Alley looked as awesome as last year but didn't have time to explore in depth. Writer's Block looked smaller and more crowded. Last year moving Autographs/Photo-Ops to the Sheraton was an epic move. Keeping them there this year was also epic. The line at the official merch booths was much smaller and more manageable this year. Perhaps because they've pushed ordering online, perhaps because they didn't have any mega-hot collector's items i.e. Funko Pops at the merch booth. They also did better at filling up the convention center/convention areas. I noticed a big gaming section on the 3rd floor...I didn't stop by but I don't remember seeing anything that looked like that in previous years (I know they've always had gaming, but it wasn't noticeable to me before) and it seemed very prominent and inviting.

They added Thursday in 2016. In 2016 and 17, Thursday was a half day and even then, it was pointless because they couldn't even fill up that half day. So I was a little worried about them expanding it to a full day...but they actually did a good job with the scheduling on Thursday this year. Panels were good but did not improve as much as the exhibit hall did. The biggest thing worth mentioning IMO is that they finally brought in an official DreamWorks-Netflix Voltron studio panel on Thursday, and it was everything a studio panel should be. As far as I know, this was the first one since 2012's Falling Skies. We need more of these. Some of the mid-sized panels (i.e. Phil LaMarr spotlight, Cyanide and Happiness) were pretty awesome. But the only main stage panel I attended (other than Voltron), David Tennant/Billie Piper, was a 5 minute introduction followed by 55 min of Q&A. Weak. Guest List improved significantly by the end but IMO still ended up on par with ~2014 (their second weakest year since I've started going.) I'd be ok exchanging the collective notoriety of the guests for a better selection of studio panels...but whether or not that happens remains to be seen.

Another area which saw improvement was offsite activity. While walking about in downtown & Cap. Hill, I did notice more businesses with signage that referenced ECCC i.e. a party on Friday night at Redhook Brewlab sponsored by MoPop (Museum of Pop Culture/formerly Experience Music Project.) It also seemed like there were more cosplayers on the streets, although this could just be because it was clear and sunny (albeit cold) most of the time. Also, after 8 years they finally made Kirby Krackle's Kracklefest an official con event. I didn't go though I watched it live on Facebook from my hotel, which was cool.

Funko also held a podcast meetup at their HQ in Everett on Wednesday night -- good to see some pre-con activity. It was fun though a lot less structured than I'd expected...they did not really have a podcast. It was just people socializing and buying stuff from the HQ (with the option of getting the HQ exclusives) and a few games set up and hosted by members of the podcast that you could play for prizes. But I noticed there were already plenty of people camped out to be first in line to buy the HQ exclusives the next morning... :X

Anyway, as mentioned previously I almost didn't go, but I was glad to be able to go up after all...seventh year in a row. :) I do like most of the changes that I saw this year and am satisfied now with the direction it's going in. Two days this year was fine to be able to stay in the loop but next year it's going back on my must-attend list for the entire weekend.

Oh, one thing I've been meaning to post -- It appears that all their signage, logos, etc now say "Emerald City Comic Con" rather than "Emerald City Comicon." Did anyone else notice this?

The quirks of the venue also made it difficult for ReedPOP to implement some of the technology innovations it is rolling out at other shows.  A representative of Showclix, the ticketing platform serving ReedPOP and the show, explained that access control at the WSCC was so problematic that attempts to use RFID chips or other kinds of electronic badge features would have just created bottlenecks and inconvenience for attendees.  [Disclosure: I have a business relationship with Showclix].  Instead, WSCC staffers checked badges at the entry points, waving people through or redirecting them to other areas if escalators or elevators were out of service.

A major convention center expansion is in the works that will up the venue’s capacity to 160,000 by 2021, at least in theory.  That will be a game-changer, assuming interest in events like ECCC, PAX West and Sakura Con remains high.  In the meantime, Armstrong says ECCC is looking to expand content programming to the Hyatt and other nearby venues to keep the event fresh in coming years.

That was an interesting article. The point about RFID is well-taken. There are so many weird entrances and exits to the con, with rooms and stairways all over the place. It would be difficult to monitor entrance and exit for everyone.

My friend and I were initially wondering why we had to activate our badges when there were no RFID terminals. It makes more sense not to have the terminals as it would have caused bottlenecking issues. It would have made sense, however, to have consolidated 4 separate badges into one 4-day badge similar to what SDCC does.

The guest list was extremely weak this year, so I didn't get any photo-ops, but I had fun networking and meeting cosplayers and taking photos and video. I should be done with the editing process for the video in about a week. I'll post it here when it's completed. If anyone saw me in cosplay, I was Nick Fury on Friday, Men in Black (with Frank the Pug and Agent K) on Saturday and Morpheus on Sunday. Cosplaying always makes these shows extra fun for me.

Overall, I had a great time at the show. I'm glad I didn't spend too much time screwing around with Funko. Even though it sprinkled a couple of times, the weather was gorgeous for the most part. We walked over to the Space Needle on a brisk, bright sunshiny morning, but it's currently under construction. You can go up, but only 1/4 of the observation platform is available to the public. We stayed at the Motif, which was a perfect, centralized location for exploring the city on foot. It was a 5-20 minute walk for wherever we wanted to go... except for Sizzler. We had to catch an Uber for that.

Here’s my cosplay video from ECCC 2018. I will be sharing the video on my Facebook cosplay page www.facebook.com/westcoastmorpheus/ and the link on Instagram @westcoastmorpheus. I took several photos with my DSLR and my Smartphone, which I will be posting onto FB. For those that may have seen me, I was Nick Fury on Friday, Men in Black (with Frank the Pug and Agent K) on Saturday and Morpheus on Sunday.
