When asked to compare his graphic novels to the prose work of Jewish-American novelist Saul Bellow, Will Eisner replied, “Bellow is doing nothing more than I'm doing . . . I've been selling the same pretzel on the same corner." Having innovated comics in the 1940s with his legendary The Spirit, Eisner burst back onto the scene with his pioneering 1978 graphic novel A Contract with God. He devoted the rest of his career to telling stories of Jewish life in 20th-century America. In Contract’s wake, new generations of Jewish graphic novelists followed in Eisner’s footsteps. Trina Robbins (A Minyn Yidn Un Andere Zakhn), Ken Krimstein (When I Grow Up: The Lost Autobiographies of Six Yiddish Teenagers), and Karen Green (Columbia University) discuss how the Jewish graphic novel developed in the years after Eisner’s groundbreaking publications. Our connections with fictional and media characters have power over us that we don’t always realize. These parasocial relationships are often as powerful as real-life relationships. During the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, many college students, staff, and faculty leaned on these relationships. Moderator Alfred Day (UC Berkeley) will share his doctoral research on the power of parasocial relationships on college campuses and will join psychologist Dr. Brent Crandal (UC San Diego) and student Karlinna Sanchez (UCLA) to discuss the ways in which parasocial relationships have impacted community and learning on campuses.

In most first-year composition courses at public universities, writing instructors teach students about different argumentation styles, academic writing situations, rhetoric, classic appeals in both textual and visual settings, and how to integrate a deeper awareness of these elements into their reading and writing habits. Kristin Tamayo (California Polytechnic State University. Pomona) uses Derrick Jensen and Stephanie McMillan’s graphic novel As the World Burns: 50 Simple Things You Can Do to Stay in Denial in her classroom to give her students a way to study classic rhetorical appeals while also deepening their visual rhetorical awareness. Here, Tamayo discusses her analysis of student writers’ responses to this book to determine their understanding of the classical rhetorical appeals it uses to inform and persuade its audience to care about the effects of ecocide. Her students Courtney M. Murdoch, Yoselin I. Castro, and Hannah Gruidl share their reactions to reading the graphic novel in the classroom.

A first peek at select readings from the play Bill Finger: Rise of the Bat, debuting in the fall in limited runs in New York City, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania. The script takes a deep dive into the life of Bill Finger, the co-creator of Batman (with Bob Kane) who never received due credit until 2015. Journey with Bill from the inception of Batman to his passing away nearly penniless in 1974, to finally receiving his posthumous co-creator credit in 2015. The play weaves together a story by Athena Finger (Bill's granddaughter), Alethia Mariotta, and Lenny Schwartz (writer/director of the film The Haunted and the Hunted) with a playscript and direction by Schwartz. Athena Finger, Lenny Schwartz, and performers Rick Stafford (The True Aquaman) and Paul Rose Jr. (Comic Book Junkies) will be on hand, culminating with a Q&A about the script and a reading of a few scenes (for the first time ever!). Moderated by Tyler McPhail (The Grand Geek Gathering).
